Riding on that Midnight Train

- Better late than never! In previous years, I filmed all the train songs well ahead of time. This year, I procrastinated, and the only one I filmed in advance was The City of New Orleans. We were down to the wire with this last one. Matt and I were planning to do it a few days earlier, but several things came up, and we didn't try filming until today around 3:30. Add to that the fact that my internet is down to an absolute crawl, and you get an upload that just barely made it. On the bright side, we had great luck throughout the series when it came to getting good takes on the very first try, including this one. Doing this song with Matt was super fun! We hadn't picked or sung with him in quite a few years, but everything seemed to fall into place fairly well. I apologize that the vocals are kind of hard to hear. We both should have sung louder, but with 5 instruments playing in one kitchen, it was probably a given that the vocals might be a bit smothered. This song has more of a bluegrass feel than any song we've done in the series so far, except for Bringing in the Georgia Mail or The Wreck of O'le 97. Since the vocals are a bit hard to hear, I pasted the lyrics below. Thanks for watching!
No matter what I say or do,
You’re never satisfied.
I’ve tried and I’ve tried so many times...
I’m leaving you now. Goodbye.
I’m riding on that midnight train.
My head is hanging low.
These awful blues will follow me
Wherever I may go.
You broke a heart that trusted you.
Why wasn't it made of stone?
You made my world as black as night,
And yet I must travel on.
Repeat Chorus
Why on earth was I ever born?
I’ll never understand.
Just to fall in love with a woman like you
Who's in love with another man?
Repeat Chorus - Hudba
The first time I heard this song was years ago, and the Stanley Brothers were singing it .
Y'all did a great job .
Bray's favorite! We love it!!! Thank ya'll with lot's of love!
God's Speed Only.
Rural internet is all part of the process. Great job!😊🇨🇦
Thanks, Gary. We are hoping to be connected to broadband before Christmas, but we'll see. :-)
Bray still absolutely has a fit when this comes on and Sand Mountain, but of course, we love them all! If any other music pops up on tv , Bray gets really upset. A 3 year with Autism, it simply amazes me the way only your music calms him right down. Thank yall so much!!
Have a Blessed Christmas to all!!
God's Speed Only!
I love listening to you guys. It is truly wonderful to see God given talent at work.
Bray's absolute favorite, I think. Yall are a terrific Blessing to us!! Thank you all for playing so GREAT!!
God's Speed Only!
Loving this while getting ready for church this morning. Fantastic music. Love the harmony.
This was excellent I love this song and the way yuns played it, Katie did hit some cool notes , thanks for sharing such great music! 💯❤️
Naomi, thanks for always watching and commenting!
Well...
that room is a jam
packed
sweet as a jar;
and the song
fills my ear,
but the room
fills my belly;
and my taste buds
are ear buds,
and the music is jelly.
When the song
comes to it's end
the spoon scrapes the jar
like waves at the beach
lap at the shore
Then I scrape at the screen
lookin' for more.
HNY!
Wonderful girls!! You are making sweet music for your family and friends. Love the clogging too. I know your parents are so proud of you both. Your Uncle Paul is proud too. He has got to be because the two of you harmonize so well together.
I enjoyed it so much that I played it twice in a row! 🎼💚❣️
Great job you guys and girls I enjoyed song very much.Thank you and God Bless you all.
been playing music all my life, and am retired after 29 yrs teaching music in public schools. This is a classic in so many ways (to me). Watching y'all interacting and witnessing the daddy/daughters connection. And got to be a proud dad. . .I watched and scrolled back a few times . . and done all in one take . . Please do more
Thanks, Alan. We're so glad you liked it. We'll try to do more when we can. Katie is my niece. Her sister, Corie, and her mom, Tipper (my sister) are playing guitar and bass respectively. They're just out of frame. Katie and Corie's dad (Matt Pressley) is indeed a proud dad. If you look really closely, you can see his reflection in the painting that's hanging on the wall. He's walking in a semi-circle in front of us, filming with his phone held up high. :-)
My little 3 year Grandson, Bray, actually squeals when the train whistle blows and Granny speaks. We just enjoy your music and talent so much!!
Ill never be able to thank you enough for the peace and joy that i get from your awesome music & my favorite type of music!! Ive just become partial to yall!! It's the best!!
The new one yall did today 10/21, oh my goodness, im addicted already!! I love it!
I love all of you like family. I just wonder if any of my people knew any of your family/people or Matt's over in Canton. Maybe we can check that out one day. My folks were Capps & Baileys.
Yall have a nice Autumn weekend!
God's Speed Only.
With lots of love & thanks for sharing beautiful Appalachia with me daily.
Oh the leaves are so pretty this year. I wush i could see them in person. It's all the magic from the Lord! So pretty!!
Thank you Lisa!! So glad you and Bray enjoy the videos 😀
@@BlindPigAndTheAcorn thank yall!! We truly enjoy All that you share.
You have no idea how much we listen to yall play your beautiful music. Im just so grateful that I stumbled across Tipper, & that was all she wrote.
Paul,
That was really well done. Matt has a nice voice and can play that mandolin really well. I would have loved to join in on the canter that probably went on before and after the take. I am sorry the train songs are over but hopefully you will do some Christmas songs for the month of December.
Debbie
Ps I have watched Matt's 10:4 outdoors several months or more ago I really enjoyed the videos I have watched
Thanks, Debbie! I'll be sure to tell Matt that he picked up a CZcams fan. :-) Corie's husband, Austin, is a big hunter, so maybe we can get him to appear on 10-4 Outdoors. 🙂
Great song.
I've heard Doc Watsondo this song 🎵 you did it very well for not knowing it. Thanks for the share.
Thanks, Harry! I found the studio version of Doc doing it on CZcams. To me, it didn't seem near as good as the live version I saw on PBS back in the day, but not bad at all!
Aw! What sad lyrics! Love the performance, though! Such a hoot!
Now that’s worth something right there. 👍🏻
Katie I just love that fiddle ... It just stood out sweet girl just made me want to dance.
I so enjoy your family and friends !! Loved♥️ it so very much..Going back to look at it a second time Katie your facial expressions crack me up girl and when you sit up tall and play your beauty just shines
Katie does make some interesting faces! Her first one on the chorus seems to be displeasure with my tenor singing! 😂My favorite is when she mouths some of the lyrics to herself.
Oh yeah! Love this old number too! This was a good one for the Stanley Brothers and pretty huge for Ralph solo later on! Carter Stanley wrote this one and I’ve heard many versions of it but never Doc Watsons! I will be sure to try to look up Doc doing it! Y’all sounded real nice and the harmony was killer.. Katie did a great job too!👍
Thanks, Banjo Outlaw! I was thinking that it was a Stanley tune, but I didn't want to say because I wasn't sure. Thanks for confirming!
That was some great pickin', singin' and fiddlin! It must be so fun to get play and sing with family and good friends!
Thanks so much, Leigh. Yes, we have a lot of good times making music together. We are very blessed to have music to share with each other.
Thourghly enjoyed the music and the singing! Thank you for sharing as you do with us.
Faith & Family, that's what it's all about! So cool to know that it had that affect! Thanks! :-)
That was wonderful!! I listened 2X & will more, as I will be SINGING WITH you next time!! Haha. Loved those notes/licks Katie. When I first listened, I called them “sideways” notes (to my ear); but second time, I realized your intent - to sound like a train !!!! Great job!!!💙
Lovely
Thanks, Beverly!
Sounded so good for a new one
Thanks, D.G. n. We kind of surprised ourselves making it through it in one try. :-)
Wonderful job with this one, Paul et al! Mandolin is one of my favorite instruments, so having Matt along was a real treat. Perhaps we can talk Corie into dusting-off her mando once in a while. I would love that. Thanks for making this series; I really enjoyed it!
Thanks, Roland. So glad you liked it. Matt played a break for the song a few times to himself, but I didn't succeed in convincing him to play it in the take. Maybe next time. :-)
Beautiful instrumental and singing. Enjoyed the video!
Gene, so glad you liked it! Thanks!
Mighty fine singing and playing!!! God Bless. Jean
Thanks, Jean, and God Bless you too!
That sounded great. I'm going back now to watch the rest of the train series. thanks for all the awesome music.
"For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?"

Thanks, Nurse Libby! We appreciate you as a subscriber and viewer!
Excellent, guys! Excellent! THAT'S how it's done!
I'd heard Tipper speak of Blind Pig and the Acorn. Now I know! Duh!😃 Great Job on this song and I'll try to catch up on several of these video's!🙋♂️
Thanks, Dip Stick! This channel has been around a while, so there are a lot of videos you might like. BTW, I like your username! :-)

Enjoyed the before and after chat, but really enjoyed the song.
Thanks, Sue. I started to cut out all the talking, but several viewers have commented that they like it, so I left it. Glad you liked the song!

What a great song. This is the first video I've seen with Matt (not Tipper's husband) and he sang the song so well!
Thanks, Kenneth. Yes, indeed he did!
Enjoyed the video. My first time watching this channel.

Awesome song. Matt is an awesome singer and musician. I just subscribed to his channel.
Sweet! Matt picked up two viewers! Thanks, Somwrt Lftur!
Great job.

Awesome job everyone! I was riding down the road while listening to this one and y’all done had me speeding lol 😂 Thanks for sharing this. Going over to check out Matt’s channel now sounds like my kind of stuff. 👍🏻👍🏻🦌🦌 GOD BLESS YOU ALL. 😇🙏🏻😇🙏🏻😇🙏🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
Thanks, Pastor Lon! This is a peppy one, so I could see how it could enhance driving a bit. :-)
@@BlindPigAndTheAcorn you’re welcome! Yes it sure did. lol 😂🙌🏻👍🏻
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏 well done, I loved it!
Wow! Thanks, Steve!
@@BlindPigAndTheAcorn thanks for the treat playing such music
Awesome
Thanks, Tom. Glad you liked it!
Katie is the spitting image of her daddy, same mannerisms and everything.
Thanks, Stormy Weather. She would take that as a compliment, and rightfully so.
CLAPPING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! REALLY enjoyed that, would've loved another verse or two!!!! Sounded pretty tight to me! ENCORE AND BRAVO!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks, Melrose795! Matt knew the original two verses (from the Stanley version, I believe). I happened to know the "extra" one from Doc's version, so I threw it in. :-)
@@BlindPigAndTheAcorn :-)
Kitchen bluegrass is the best!
Yes it is. With front porch bluegrass being a close second!
Thanks, K.Y. It's our favorite too! :-)
@@marilynpeppers1356 That's true!
💕
Comfort Creek Ranch, Thanks for watching and commenting!
LOVE TRAINS
Thanks, Ben! We'll try to do the series again next November!
Did you guys know Sherman Mathews, Floyd Collins, or Bill Darnaby? Sherman Mathews was my father, he was friends with Doc Watson, Mack (Mac) Butler, they played music together every time they saw each other. My dad played lead guitar and lead vocals with a band called the Missourians and also with a band called Ramblin' Rovers. Later in years my brothers and I, along with my sister-in-law formed a band called Little Outlaws and my dad played music with us as well. My dad went on to be with the Lord April the 2, 2005. I just thought maybe you had heard of him.
We're not familiar with the names. I bet they made some great music 😀
Nice!
Thank you, Robert!
♥️🎵🥰‼️
Thanks for the nice emojis, Sue! :-)
Nice.
Thank you, LS719!
Enjoyed this song, enjoyed see Matt Cook. Dennis Morgan
Thanks, Dennis. Glad you liked the video!
Matt has a good voice however the mike was not picking it up! However Katie really stepped up! Love ya’lls music!
Thanks, Jonathan. That's true. Maybe if we do another one, we can get him a little closer to the mic.
Makes me want to learn how to play the guitar. Well, if I were coordinated enough.
Thanks, Charles! Now is a good time to learn: cheap guitars are better made and there's free access to tons of lessons on CZcams...
After three or four times I still think it is awesome but would love to hear Korie doing a little high part harmony.
Thanks, Tom. :-)
Who was that singing on this video?
Hi, Billy. His name is Matt Cook. He's a family friend of ours.
Is it just me
or
are the instruments sizes
becoming
inversely proportional to the
size of the band members?
Thanks, Phillip. Maybe so... :-)
Paul, check out John Prine, Morning train
Thanks, John1 I sure will.
Don't start the video until you're ready to do the song. Short spoken intro is ok, but y'all eat up nearly three minutes before there's any music.
Thanks for the feedback Thomas. A lot of our regular subscribers request the little back and forth that happens when making music so that's why we leave it in. Have a great evening!
@@BlindPigAndTheAcorn Thanks for responding. It's just possible that I'm grumpy +} but I watch a good bit of this kind of thing and personally prefer the music to take center stage...
@@tommygoldsmith You're not grumpy 😀everyone has their own tastes and that's how it should be 😀
@@BlindPigAndTheAcorn Sure. And I applaud y'all's group music making. Everyone who can ought to do it. I'm 69 and just started another band with old friends. As Tom T. Hall noticed, "There ain't no money in it and it'll lead to an early grave," but you can't let that stop you....+)
I have an ornament I made I’d like to send your family but I need your address.
Thank you Donna! You can send it to: Tipper Pressley PO Box 83 Brasstown, NC 28902. We appreciate your generosity!!
