- The songs on this tape aren't quite as practiced as the ones I found on reel-to-reel, and they're a bit more melancholy. I generally think of Pap always singing old songs, Granny too for that matter, so I was surprised when researching these songs to learn that several of the songs were only a few years old at the time Pap and Granny recorded them on cassette tape. I assume that Pap learned some of these songs at singings he attended. Look closely at this picture, taken in their house, newly built by Pap, and you can spot the case of the Dove sitting on the couch to the left, causing me to think this picture may have been taken just before or after a church singing. As with the last upload of Pap and Granny, you can hear little me in the background and the bass strings of the Dove thundering throughout this recording. Pap told me that by the time I started playing, the top string didn't sound with as much authority because he forgot the guitar in a hot car, and by the time he remembered it, the bridge had pulled up from the heat. He glued it back down with Elmer's Wood Glue but accidentally spilled glue in the peg hole for the top string, deadening it slightly. It may not sound as good today but still sounds good. "Forgive Me, Lord" is partly missing at the beginning, and I was unable to recover the missing part. Pap would have learned this song from The Webster Brothers (who you can hear on CZcams), probably on the Cas Walker Show or Mid-Day Merry Go 'Round, but I don't know the writer. This upload features "I Looked All Over Heaven." For comparison, you can find a video of me and Granny singing the same song on this channel. This upload also features "I've Got Jesus," which I sang with Pap 11 years ago (also available to view on this channel). This upload includes a Louvin song. Pap and his brother Ray sang this song from time to time in concerts, and I always noticed the audience fall extra quiet. I believe they were struck by the song's sincerity. When Pap sang it (with Ray or Granny), he sang "to erase these awful things that I've done." Ira wrote the line as "to escape these awful things that I do." That present tense reveals the tragic figure that Ira was, showing that he was still grappling with alcoholism. Pap and Ray sang the song in D or E flat. The Louvins (who normally san everything as high as possible) recorded the song 2-3 frets lower in C. That key wasn't even possible for Pap and Ray because neither of them could hit notes as low as Charlie. Back when I understood less about singing, I wondered why the Louvins sang it there. I thought maybe they recorded the song before they fully learned it, and just didn't realize how low the key was. Eventually, I noticed that they doubled the octave on the last line of the chorus, something Pap never did with Ray or Granny. Then it made sense to me: the Louvins had to pitch the song very low in order to make that last line possible. They were fond of making their singing dynamic and liked to show many different ways they could approach the harmony in one song, switching parts around and going progressively higher. Their recording of "I Love the Silver in Your Hair" is another Good example of this. Perhaps a more similar example to "Oh Lord, My God" is "Nobody's Darlin' But Mine." In it, they switch octaves and parts without changing keys (as in Oh Lord, My God). Anyway, I could write an essay on that one song. Back to Pap and Granny: This upload ends with two original songs from Pap. It's easy to tell that these songs were still being developed at the time he and Granny sang them. To hear the way the songs finally wound up, you can find me singing them as solos (recorded in a studio) at this link: / @paulwilson6260
In the Coen Brothers film "Inside Llewyn Davis," the main musician character says that you should never let anyone hear your practice stuff. I tend to agree, but viewers on this channel seem to love hearing Granny & Pap so much, I figured I would let this rougher stuff see the light of day. Also, several people, such as Debbie Nixon, let me know how much they loved Pap's prayer in "I'm Not the Servant I Should Be," so I figured I would show those listeners where I pulled the audio from for the studio recording. The Bright Shinning Light is one of the most difficult songs to sing, even though it has just four basic chords. I like Granny's harmony in this recording. She hit a couple of strange harmony notes that I've only heard in one or two other songs. In case anyone was wondering, Granny sang the harmony on all of the songs in this upload. As always, I hope you enjoyed some these songs.

Just in case anyone might be offended by one of the verses Pap sang in The Great Judgement Morning, I want to point out that he did not compose that verse. It is one of the original verses. Pap believed drinking alcohol for intoxication is a sin, but he did not believe that anyone who drank or was involved in the business of providing alcohol was automatically going to hell. If you check out the full, original lyrics on hymnary.org, you will see that two subsequent verses most likely indicate that the composer did not think that either. In those verses, both the "moral man" and the "great man" were condemned, not because of their sins but because of their failure to accept Christ. Throughout his married life, Pap never took a drink. I never heard him include that verse when he sang the song with his brother Ray. The Louvins also omitted that verse. Interestingly, Hank Williams, Sr. and George Jones (both known to have battled alcoholism throughout their lives) both included that verse in their recordings of the song. I think that means they understood what the writer was actually saying in the song. Also makes me wonder if they might have born some mild resentment toward purveyors of alcohol. Ira Louvin, as mentioned in the description for this video, also battled alcoholism. Though he didn't include that verse in the recording of him and Charlie singing The Great Judgement Morning, he had another song called "The Drunkard's Doom," and the narrative song featured imagery showing two different gulfs in hell, one for drunks and one for purveyors of drink. Anyway, I guess this is a trigger warning of sorts, but I wanted provide some broader info to go along with that verse. Thanks!
My family made liquor, for years, both sides, God bless you Tipper, I'm listening now , Hallelujah
How nice Tipper!
My father believed in much as your father did about alcohol. He told me that the only time he ever consumed it was the beer he was given on a troop train heading to join the war in the South Pacific. He had to ride from Fort Bragg all the way to to the west coast and they had no water on the train.
The sad part of my story is that many years after he died one of my sisters-in-law started a rumor that he had been a drunk. She claimed that the trips he and his crew took across Fontana Lake and back into the Park to tend to the roads and bridges leading to the gravesites that were left unattended for most of the year where just an excuse to escape their wives and go on a drunken binge for a week. At least one other of the twisted sisters and sisters-in-laws spread the rumor around. Needless to say I no longer associate with any of them.
Daddy was a devout Christian and an upstanding man in the Church and in the community. He was always calm and levelheaded. He was the one people would go to when they had exhausted all their resources. He gave sound advice based on his knowledge of the Bible. He was unwavering in his faith and unpersuaded by upstart religious fads.
I'm sure you would feel the same way I do were someone to say something like that about your Dad. I can't forgive them for what they have done to my father's legacy. If they could go to him and ask to be forgiven, then go to God for his forgiveness, I would forgive them too but that can't happen. I cannot ever forgive someone who is unrepentant.
This is just one example of the harm done to the innocents by alcohol!
No worries from me. The Great Judgement Morning is one my old favorites. My sister and I used to sing that one at the piano. ❤
Gosh I wish y'all didn't receive any such (in my view) hair-splitting criticisms. Too many are inclined to find ways to be offended. Thank you for this beautiful music you share.
Singing about Jesus gives life and hope, thank you so much for these beautiful songs. God bless all of you

Sounds a lot like Paul and Katie’s voice ❤
I agree Josephine. Some songs I hear Katie, then others I think they sound just like Corie. ❤❤
Pap and Granny Gods blessings for them and to the ones for sharing
Thanks, Darrell! God bless you too!
Thank you for sharing this beautiful recording with us. I remember hearing this kind of singing when I was young at church. My Daddy would sing and play his guitar sometimes I would harmonize with him. There would be songfests once a month and alot of people would come and sing from far away and there would be big crowds There doesn't seem to be much of this anymore. Pap and Grannie were very good. Please tell Grannie what a good singer she is. I am eldery too. I am 76 years old. Still praying for her. Loved this.
Oh, Paul, your parents sang so beautifully together. They way they harmonized and the way their voices blended was truly a gift from God. It's no wonder that you and your mother sing so well together, too. Many thanks for posting this. 👍
Noah, thanks for always watching and commenting!
Just like Kitty Wells and Johnny Wright husband and wife they were a legend
What an intimate thing to share with your spouse! Granny complimented him so well. What a treasure! Granny had this to hide in her heart for all eternity! I love to hear Granny! ❤️

Your momma and daddy are so beautiful. I love hearing the folks sing it takes me right back home. Only yes I would be playing the spoons or the mouth harp. Thank you so much. I also love it when granny sings with Paul.
Thanks so much! Wish I could play the spoons!
Oh my goodness I hadn't heard treasures unseen in a very long time...love that one ❤️
Thanks, Cassie. It's a great song for sure. Granny said Pap learned it from one of his cousins, Katie May Miller and that he learned some of the other songs in this video from his sister, Carrie Burke.
What a blessing to have that both as music heritage but as family memories.
Indeed, Robert. Thank you so much!
Beautiful. You have a beautiful heritage. God bless you all.
Thanks, Richard and God bless you too!

Thanks, Sharon. Yes, I had a memory of them singing it, so I pitched the idea to Granny of us singing it together. It's one of hundreds of great songs Brumley wrote.

Thanks a bunch, Red.
Thank you Paul, God grant granny healing, I ask you Jesus, in your name, Amen
I love their music and their witness
Listening once again to Pap and Granny's beautiful voices. It's so comforting to hear. I found someone else to sing along with as I miss these older hymns. As I looked at this picture once again, I see on the shelf those precious bronzed baby shoes with a picture 😊 I have our two boys baby shoes bronzed with their sweet little pictures sitting on the old fashioned cornice over our living room picture window. Such precious years as we watched them both grow into responsible young men with families of their own. Thank you for sharing! Praying and Blessed! 🤗🙏💕

Such a treasure you have in all of Pap & Granny's songs. Their beautiful voices have been passed on to their children & grandchildren. Thank you for sharing all the background information in your post.
Thank you, Nick. We do have a lot to cherish, and hopefully, these uploads can still be played by someone after we're gone.
Beautiful sound ❤❤❤
Thank you for another good upload! It was in the seventies, John Stallings visited our church in Advance, Mo during revival services. I remember he told in that service that he had just written a verse for "Learning to Lean" that day and sing it for us then. Course, I'm about fifty years older now, going on 75.
Wow! That's so cool, Earl. From what I read online, he was an amazing man, already performing at age 6 and preaching at 16! Apparently, he wrote 180 songs. I believe he was one year older than Pap. Learning to Lean won a Dove award in 1977.
Absolutely blessed my heart this morning 😍 love hearing old hymns sung to our Lord
Beautiful harmonies 🎶
So beautiful
So precious. Heartfelt
I enjoyed this so much. Thank you for sharing another video of Pap and Granny singing together so beautifully. Praying and Blessed! 🤗🙏💕

Beautiful. What a nice treasure these videos are. ❤❤
Thanks, Tony. Yes, we're blessed to have them.
Paul,
Well, you whipped a bunch of old songs but new ones to my ears. That first one one I loved it. I definitely hope you produce a cd of them singing together. It would be great to have it to listen to. No wonder Pap fell in love with that young girl so many years ago.
Granny, you are a very talented lady. Getting to know about you through this channel has been a blessing one I will treasure.
Thanks Paul for this great collection of songs. It's storming here right now but there is calmness sitting here listening to these wonderful words of praise of our heavenly Father.
Debbie
Thanks, Debbie. I hope you especially enjoyed the second to last song.
@BlindPigAndTheAcorn Paul, I certainly did "I'm Not The Servant I Should Be." It was neat to hear the different version from the one on the cd I have, but his prayer gets me every time.
❤ I am so enjoying listening to your parents singing. It really hits home. My family used to sing just like this. Makes me happy and sad as they have all passed. ❤
