- Hey guys what’s happening? Niyat here with film comics explained and today we're embarking on a journey into the heart of one of the most ambitious and surprisingly profound reboots in recent history, with a look at 2011’s 'Rise of the Planet of the Apes'.
When we hear the words 'reboot' and 'apes taking over the world', one might think we're heading into a territory that's been overtrodden, filled with clichés and mindless spectacle. But this film, penned by the dynamic duo Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver, is not monkeying around. It's a cinematic endeavor that dares to swing through the vines of deep, thought-provoking themes while packing a punch with its action and emotional depth.
Directed by Rupert Wyatt, a filmmaker who, prior to this, was known for his more understated work like 'The Escapist', the film marked a significant leap in both his career and the art of filmmaking. What Wyatt brings to the table is a remarkable blend of storytelling finesse and technological innovation, demonstrating an uncanny ability to handle a large-scale project, balancing the demands of a blockbuster with the sensitivity of a character-driven drama.
It's a cleverly crafted narrative that weaves together the threads of scientific ambition, ethical dilemmas, and the complexities of freedom and oppression. It’s about as subtle as a gorilla in a china shop, but it's got the brains of a chimpanzee and the heart of an orangutan, diving into a story that challenges our very notions of what it means to be human, what it means to communicate, and what happens when the oppressed decide they’ve had enough.
The script, a rare gem in the world of reboots and sequels, manages to take a premise that could easily have descended into B-movie territory and elevates it to something that’s both intellectually and emotionally engaging. It’s a tightrope walk of narrative skill, balancing character development, plot progression, and thematic exploration with the grace of a trapeze artist.
As we dissect this beast of a film, we’ll delve into how it reimagines the lore of the 'Planet of the Apes', analyze its characters, and the science behind the Simian Flu virus that ravages humanity.

This rebooted trilogy was incredible. Caesar will go down as one of most memorable characters in media.
And this is how CGI are done, not like today's which are just plain laziness that the directors think over profits than quality itself.
@@rogueascendant6611 I see your point but there are some exceptions like Avatar and Alita Battle Angel.
You mean the greatest ape in cinema history
The absolute genius behind movies like this, District 9, and Ex Machina is that we always sympathize with the non human side.
Absolutely Iceheart! It helps when you have Andy Serkis nailing his creature portrayals as usual
I side with Magneto but I don't care about cat food eating Prawns
just goes to show how shit humans reallly are. Even with the Matrix, when you learn the whole how and why, you sympathize with the machines more than with the humans
@@filmcomicsexplainedhe is definitely an amazing actor!
@@iceheart1289 He should have got an oscar for playing Caesar
The 2011 Planet of the Apes is one of the last good memories i have with my stepdad. Don't worry, he's not dead. Our relationship just turned sour a few years afterwards.
Sorry to hear that :( I can definitely sympathise with that buddy. But glad that you have a positive memory of him that you can remember
I know how you feel. I was ten when the first movie came out, me and my dad watched it together and we couldn't stop talking about it. A couple years later, everything really went downhill between us. *offers a hug*
What I really like about this movie is that it managed to make a modern interpretation of the original with each entry closing in on the original plot.
This movie was so, so good. I believe many were expecting a ham-fisted, schlocky b-movie and instead we got a very smart, subtle, and brilliantly told origin story.
I hope you cover the sequels!
This is probably my favourite film in the apes verse. So well written, so well acted....and with a message we can all understand.. sometimes messing with nature ends badly for us.....we need to know our limits and make sure we don't kill ourselves.
I resonated with koba, that absolute aversion to authority through power. They go even further in the second one with that nature in koba causing a rift within the apes. He hates authority. He hates misuse of power sometimes to the detriment to his own species. Those scars on his face are merely a footnote for his internal scars he suffered under men with power.
It's so damn good and such a telescope on ourselves and the hubris of the human condition.
Well said dubfist! I can’t wait to explore the rest of the series
Bruh can you imagine how scary this shit would be if this really happened
Koba was an incredible antagonist
Planet of the Apes makes me think about the roman empire additionally every day
Not a day goes by where I dont think about Ancient Rome lol
@@filmcomicsexplained
Can you do a video on Godzilla Minus One
I just always find it hard to believe that the 113 exposure event in that Koba scene would happen the way it did. No way that dude would have been cleared to go home with no monitoring, given that it was a viral vector.
YES!!
I've been waiting for a long time for a Video on the PLANET OF THE APES SAGA!
I remember watching the original 1968 version on TV with my parents on the WB Network back in 1998, and it had one of the most shocking twist endings in film history.
Man this was excellent.
I can't even begin.
Your work is generally great and a blessing but what you've done here, sir.. I can only say I appreciate you, your soul, and clear passion.
Wow, thank youShabutie420! Glad you enjoyed it mate :)
I remember first being introduced to the old series in an anthropology class and being taken aback by how insight it was in regards to animals having a culture society traditions religion. Then I remember when the new series came out I was so excited and def not disappointed, def delved more deep into Cesar’s inner psyche and the turmoil he faced with in my opinion greater understanding why he was more empathetic towards humans than his fellow apes (ie the way he grew up, was raised)
I watched this movie over and over again I used to watch the old ones all the time. I love how you just now started doing it.
You absolutely nail this video l. Such an amazing film and how they have kept the class by not overselling/going major commercial. They've let the films speak for itself
This was Harambe's revenge.
He died right before War
We love you FilmsComicsExplained. Always amazing content . Great narrative and research man❤
An absolutely phenomenal video, sir. I do like how this is in someways a cash grab on an existing franchise, but it is executed so well. It does what they should be doing when remaking, expand while improving.
Yep. And I honestly think it's time we switched the script and remade Tarzan. Caesar was given the opportunity, but not the choice, to grow as human as possible. I think there is a lot to explore in the story of a human given the opportunity to grow as apelike as possible. Maybe 'Planet of the Apes' is the perfect universe in which to explore that.
I hate the whole ceaser was a bad guy he started the apocalypse…nah my boy finished it
Wish I had a vocabulary like yours. Great vid as always! I rewatched this movie a couple nights ago so seeing this on my feed today was perfect. Thank you!
Wow, thank you! Glad the timing with you watching the movie and seeing the video on your feed aligned perfectly :)
@@filmcomicsexplained you don't have any vocabulary at all, this is just chat gpt slop and you should stop using it
FINALLY, u know how long ive been waiting for u to release this video? years, actual years.
And now I'm going to watch them all again. Great video
Awesome! Thank you tweek. Enjoy the series:)
Your work is awesome as usual!
Love the original film, rise was good as well!
An amazingly written video yet again and a long one at that! I have been a subscriber and viewer for years now well done yet again FCE keep up the amazing work
Been waiting on this
Genuinely one of the greatest trilogies of all time
Nobody talking about how Ceaser looks completely terrified of his aggression and primal instincts, as well as the horror of seeing other humans looking at him like a monster
This movie holds up 13 years later. CGI was great and they made it absolutely feel as if the apes could come through the screen. A reboot/continuation done with perfect care and thoughtfullness.
loveee your vids man great job
just watched this movie for the first time congrats on 1M subs btw
Lmao we watched war of the planet of the apes on thanksgiving and I’ve been watching EVERY video about the virus since lmao this is PERFECT thank you!!! You fed my obsession
Have u Seen Roanokes Video on the SimianFlu? Ist easily his best video. The science is spot on
You're welcome Jaed!
@@arithmetikmilitantpoetry9548 lol omg YES it’s the one I watch the most it’s sooo good
Do the other two! This was amazing
You did it man. More puns within 3 minutes than I even wanted to know was possible
😂
Fantastic episode 😃. Keep it up
Thanks Jamesnoe! :)
Such a great movie, kinda crazy it came out so long ago
Looking forward for the other movies to be covered 😀
Another banger ❤
I love this movie. Great video 👍
Can’t wait for the newest movie
FilmComicsExplained comin strong out of the gate with the monkey puns
An underrated trilogy
You’ve made a beautiful review
you should be very proud. Thank you 🏴
Thank you kindly williepirie!
Thank you for your work
I loved this trilogy! Best reboot ever! I really have to commend John Lithgow for this performance. My father died a few years before this and he had Parkinson’s disease. This caused my father’s mental faculties to decline. I almost wanted to cry when he asked Will where his keys were. My father would often ask for money and my mom would give it to him to make him happy. Just like Charles couldn’t use his keys because he couldn’t drive my dad didn’t need money because he couldn’t go anywhere to spend it. I really love this film but I really wanted to talk about John Lithgow who I feel doesn’t get enough credit for this role.
Beautiful words to describe a beautiful film
Made my day again bro 😎
Glad to hear it, thearmchairjournalist!
Please do the rest. I think they have another one coming out next year?🎉
Yep that’s the plan Samuelrumsey! :)
@@filmcomicsexplained please do the trilogy 🙏 this is one of my favorite movie trilogies, so that you could explain the virus more on how it effects humans and apes
Yep.
The next one is Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes :)
How come so many remakes today are terrible but these were all good-great
Well I think while films like this revolutionised CGI motion capture, modern moves often use it as a crutch, tending to just say "we'll fix it in post production" instead of integrating it organically during pre-production and the shoot
I don't really have an answer but I often wonder about movies and how they could've been done differently. As an example what if Hunger Games was done darker and more like 1984 instead of all bright and flashy? I agree though these are good while maintaining the original ideas still.
Excellent video
Thanks for exposing Niyat.
While I don’t know a lot about the franchise, I admit I have a major soft spot for this trilogy.
I was surprised of how I enjoyed the first film
Used to watch this film on repeat back in the day
Great video Can you do Mondasian,Nomad,Telosian,Neomorph,Weapons-grade and CyberFaction Cybermen from Doctor Who
Great video now please do the 2nd and 3rd movie 👍🏾👍🏾
27:08 to me this let the audience know that these are the prequal to the classic. Remember the sound out the was on earth the entire time
24:21 I love your videos, this one included. And i dont wanna be that "aCtuAllY" guy xd. Just that's M249 machinegun. No way a gatling gun. Gatling gun's got multiple barrels.
What’s scared the heck outta me is the fact that a well meaning scientist just wanted to help people ended up destroying the world
This is why we can't always have control
Neat!
.... just a question about your podcast... is it by chance available on Spotify (I know it's a bit cheeky to ask about another platform, on another platform).... And - excellent break down of this film!!! Super appreciate your attention to detail!!
Hey annegirard! Not yet, we’re still manoeuvring the copyright aspect with the clips that we use as we discuss the films from beginning to end, but we’re gonna be adding a new format to the discussions soon that should be able to work on audio only platforms. Will keep ya’ll updated for sure. Thanks for asking 😀
@filmcomicsexplained oh that's awesome!!! Hopefully it'll work out well for you!! Much appreciated!!
If you did one of these movies you need to do the rest of these my friend. 😊
i cant wait to see the new movie high hopes for it being good
FIngers crossed for sure
@@filmcomicsexplainedfor sure
25:59 I absolutely love the juxtaposition of baby Caesar asking for permission to becoming the one granting permission.
Caesar is everything you would want in a revolutionary leader, he’s kind, fair, firm, wise, and powerful.
All the apes looked up to him but Caesar knew he was nothing without his people. If the population is dumb, educate the population. Caesar could have easily been selfish and escape the facility and abandon all the other apes, but he knew it would be the wrong thing to do. Every decision he made was for the betterment of the collective instead of the individual. He knew Apes strong together
The original were a fav series when I was a kid the burton one was ok minus ending lol. These are so damn amazing I loved each one more than the last
cant wait for the next movie in the series
First
And this is a great topic to come back to. Enjoying the content.
Thanks CompositesNG! :)
Loser
The ape named himself. I member that bit from the theatrecal cut.
Not big on iced out peaces but this looks good 👏🏼👍🏼.
The original book from 1963 written by Pierre Boulle is spectacular and chilling.
When do you plan to put out an explained video of the 3rd movie .
Wait until Dodge's father hears about this.
please do the other ones 😁
An intense shift in species dominance
Rise of the planet of the apes is probably one of my top 5 favourite films of all time
Are you gonna cover Godzilla minus one ? I loved that movie soooo much 😅
Yes, covering that next week after we do Shin Godzilla!
@@filmcomicsexplained OMG TY SIR !!!!
My pleasure Bigjoe!
@@filmcomicsexplained just want to say ty for taking the time to answer fans im having a tough time at the hospital right now but your videos help me kill time im rewatching all you alien series at the moment ... good stuff ty again small things means a lot to some people !
Wishing you a speedy recovery my friend!
The helicopter gunner was using a Heckler & Koch G36K
You should do a video on the Gremlins for the holidays.
It's been years since I last saw this movie
My wife and I saw this in the movie theater when it came out and neither one of us can remember who and why we wanted to watch this. Hahahah
Please do the rest of the series of the planet of the apes
You should cover the rest of the trilogy, brother. And I'm curious to know your thoughts on Disney's cash-grabby announcement of a sequel to this trilogy
thanks
It's my personal head cannon that this trilogy is showing us how the original came around
Thats not headcanon, that's actually a fact, its quite obvious the new, films are prequels
I don't know why, but I'm that guy who enjoys movies most people hate. I enjoyed the Marky Mark Planet of the Apes.
Likewise
Agreed.
Funny thing for me is that when I went to see this in the theaters, two females got into a fight and I yelled at the “stop imitating what you’re seeing on the screen”.
Let me guess you said that cause they were non white right ?
@@Therambler972 Actually, it was two white women.
The CGI in the Rise film looks kinda janky these days, but when the film first came out the apes looked like they were real.
How does it look janky?
Please explore the Seven Endless from the Sandman comics/netflix series.
This film series was really good, I want to see Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes in 2024.
It's been a while since I saw this film but I completely forgot that Brian Cox is in it
How long does it take to write the script
Just to add, Andy Serkis is a freaking genius
Please look at The Ancient Enemy from The Phantoms.
Apes get smarter. Humans get dumber. It's like poetry.
😂
Sweet poetry.
Going to do all of them?
This is of course the best of all the Apes movies, even better than the OG. I'll never forget seeing this trailer in a packed theatre and that moment everyone went "OHHHHHHH...THATs what this movie is???"
The plot is similar to Deep Blue Sea.
Would you cover the sequel movies?
The movie up to the escape scenes was fairly well done.
If they had made a break for it at night, it would have at least been plausible.
Granted, it wouldn't have been very dramatic having them sneak away in the night.
But at least it wouldn't have been laughable in its implausibility.
Why is Caesar doing the Black Power Raised Fist in the thumbnail?
Why does this remind me of a cvs and walgreens
Reject Andy, embrace monke.
Can you u do dawn of the planet of the apes breakdown
In a perfect world if this actually happened. Apes and humans made peace, came too and understanding, became friends and worked together as partners too build a utopia on earth and possibly and interstellar civilisation.
