What’s poppin, Ape Nation! It’s me MT and welcome back to the Heavy Spoilers Show! This is gonna be a breakdown of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes…the best damn film in the best damn movie franchise about sentient apes who take over a planet full of stupid humans! Down with our human overlords, I say! Let’s get an Apestocracy goin’! Just kidding…but what I WILL get going is this here dang breakdown of the movie so let’s get into it!

Alright so, while Rise of the Planet of the Apes was directed by Rupert Wyatt, Matt Reeves would take over directing duties for Dawn of the Planet of the Apes due to Wyatt feeling like he could not complete the movie in the timeframe that was given to him…which is kind of a bummer considering how good his first Apes movie was…but very much a blessing in disguise as we would not have gotten this absolute masterpiece of a film by Matt Reeves.

6:12 I’ve got to disagree on this take of it showing their personalities from the start.
Moments before Koba makes the jump, Caesar notices him up on the hill with the spear as Koba charges down answering Caesars calls. The way that I’ve always read this scene is that Caesar screams at the bear to trigger it to stand on its hind legs so that Koba has a larger target and better angle to get a kill shot with the spear. To me, the scene showed the close bond between Caesar and Koba with the overall story of the movie being how even close friends can become bitter rivals.

Personally, I think that keeping the sounds of Koba breathing and the rubble shifting in during the credits was good idea. While Koba returning was scrapped, it could also be interpreted as Koba taking his final breaths as he tries to get out of the rubble. Either he dies slowly or the Colonel finds him and executes him on the spot.

Hey, I'm not hating. I think he's always been good, he's just really polished now. Some of his jokes are groaners, but they're meant to be, just like Paul's. MT does them his way, and that's great.

@@SavageLion_it’s never outright stated by anyone in the movies. It’s implied that he’s gone in Dawn when they arrive to his old house and Caesar finds old footage. Will’s car is also still there so what could that mean?

Thanks, MT! I also think this ones my favorite of the trilogy. The first one def has its place but its obv an origin story so it has its limits whereas this one really gets to explore the society they create and the relationships they form with each other. Well done!

Karen does such an amazing job as Cornelius. All of the MC actors do great, but getting someone to communicate the aura and presence of big ol' Cornelius is just so damn impressive.
That shot of Koba holding up the assault rifle he killed those dudes with is so icy cold 🥶 absolutely loved this trilogy (this was my fav of the 3) n can’t wait for the new one!!

Love these! Great narration you are hilarious & my favorite ape ofc is Cesar! & I always thought his wife’s name was a nod to real life Cesar’s wife Cornelia but I guess both work. Can’t wait for war! I wish Franco could’ve made a cameo or we & Cesar actually learned what happened to him & his father.
The contrast between Caesar and Koba in the beginning isn’t how they deal with the bear. Caesar was calling for help and when he saw Koba coming he made the noises so Koba would have a bigger target.
The contrast between them in the beginning is how they talk to Blue Eyes with Caesar telling him to think before he acts and Koba telling him that scars make you strong 5:57
Im not sure if you read my comment but I’m glad to see I’m not the only one who had this take. Seemed pretty obvious to me that Caesar saw him answering the call and wanted to give a bigger target but apparently it was lost on some people.
To me, the overall story of this one was how Caesar and Koba’s were friends at the start and became bitter rivals over their conflicting values.
@@hypercriticalbrit yeah that was my take when i saw the movie. Ceasar and Koba were great friend and they trusted each other but koba hated human too much compare to ceasar who still found value in them.

Caesar and Koba always had an uneasy relationship from the very beginning.
If you remember in Rise, Koba was about to kill Caesar's owner Will Rodman in the red wood forest, but Caesar nullified him before he could strike.
This showcased the power dynamic between the two and their battle for Alpha/dominance over the troop/colony was there from the inception.
I’m still shocked at how I was thinking bout asking for a breakdown for this masterpiece then BOOM heavy spoilers are definitely TOP-Notch 🔥🔥
This was such a great film. I like how Koba was portrayed and you actually felt sorry for him for all that he had suffered. Even so, you can't help but hate him as he lust for revenge has corrupted his very soul and made him worse than the humans he hated.
Thought you would have connected Gary Oldman to his Commissioner Gordon role.
Koba survived the fall and was suppose to be the main villain in the 3rd movie temporarily rallying with the soldiers and betraying them later on so he can kill caesar. That script would've been fire!! But they had to scrap it and make koba dead

Favorite ape is Probly blue eyes, at least in this film. His confusion and being manipulated is sad and I guess I can relate from past experiences but in the end he finds his way.
These movies really played a part in my life from 2011-2017

Bright Eyes was first said in the first movie to Charlton Heston's character. It has nothing to do with eyes it's his intelligence.
This franchise is underrated, which comes in only second to its very dark symbolic themes on and off screen.

Great video! But I have to passionately disagree with your take on Dreyfus’s motivation to blow up the tower! My favorite thing about this movie is how rational every character is. Dreyfus didn’t want “revenge against the apes for killing his family” (which they didn’t, and I think he certainly presents as a smart leader who wouldn’t believe this conspiracy theory). To him, Malcolm is this crazy man trying to get him to trust an organized and bitter ape colony. Dreyfus’s decisions to call in the military and blow up the tower is perfectly logical from his vantage point as an act of self-sacrifice to protect what’s left of his people.

I have to disagree with peaceful part at least. Just watched this movie yesterday (binging the trilogy prior to watching the 4th in theater).
When Caesar screams the first 2 times, you can clearly see him looking in the direction of his fellow apes. He was calling for help.He knew he couldn't take the bear alone.
The fact that it was Koba that saved him, earning his "Thank you Koba" only for him to completely betray Caesar, forcing Caesar to kill him, makes it so much worst, imo.

I thought Jason Clarke's performance in this scene was incredible. He genuinely liked terrified being surrounded by all those apes. Prob thinking, "This is it. I'm going to die!"
And you gotta remember, the actor, if the ape swarm wasn't completley CGI, was likely surrounded by ppl in mo cap suits.

You said, you don't know why Koba is called Koba. Koba is the nickname for Stalin, who betrayed Lenin and the October Revolution, much like this Koba will betray Caesar.
I think this is my favorite of the trilogy. You can both “villains” motive. The humans are desperate to survive and Kona was abuse all his life. You can’t blame either one for what happened
its sad, the families ceaser "left" got destroyed while his grew...its poetic and very bittersweet
One interpretation of the drawing of Caesar's horse is that it is a symbol. It represents a huge step forward for them to subjugate, tame, and utilize a beast just as it did with humans. They also took it away from humans. The horse is a representation of their liberty. I'm not sure about the colors though.

Not to bring in a toxic conversation topic, BUT this film released in 2014, with a $170M budget and still looks FANTASTIC today. But marvel projects in recent years like Thor 4 or She-Hulk had $200M+ budgets and looked really bad in many portions!

The song being sung at the end of the new trailer is a old church song from the Jim crow era. Symbolizing peace in a new world when we barely knew slavery was abolished and African American history being rewritten, by ceaser being removed from history.
