  • Welcome back to part five of the Herriot Way in the North Yorkshire Dales National Park. Filmed July 2023.
If you haven't seen previous parts, please take a look at my channel to view those first. It will make more sense that way.
Steph and I began the day from YHA Grinton Lodge around 7.20 a.m. and we completed this section around 3.30 p.m. at Aysgarth Falls, where we began the 52-mile circular route several days before. The last section took us along winding footpaths mostly through the exposed moorlands of north Yorkshire Dales. We didn't see a soul until we reached Castle Bolton where we stopped for lunch. No big climbs in this section, but still the views and scenery were amazing.
Thank you for watching. If you haven't done so already, please do consider subscribing to my channel and, if possible, give it a big thumbs up and leave a positive comment. It does help me out.
If you have any questions about this trail, please do ask. I'm more than happy to share my knowledge and experience of the Herriot Way. It's a great trail; each section is different from the next. However, I would recommend following the plan in the guidebook, which we didn't do. Here is a link to the guidebook. It's a good resource.

Well done Rachel to you both for completing this lovely trail! I'm glad you both enjoyed it. Fab to start and end at the wonderful Aysgarth Falls too. Hope that fly hovering around your camera didn't travel back home with you! 😆👍

Definitely a great hike, Rachel. I've thoroughly enjoyed it. I do love the Bothy books and the colourful comments. Those rivers were in full flood. Thanks for sharing.

You’ll love it. When you complete the stretch between Keld and Reeth, I recommend taking the high route and camping at the top of Gunnerside Gill ravine in the old mining ruins.

Ha! But those crowds are good for local businesses. Especially Bolton Castle, I couldn’t believe how quiet it was. This trail was so much fun.

What a great section, the views were great and although maybe not the best weather for 28 July. What was also great was the hunting lodge being left open and even better if is in great condition, also with an intact log book to record your visit. Not keen on seeing the cows again (I wonder if they had followed you) but great to see castle Bolton, a place I promised myself I was going to visit and walk around this yet but yet again, the summer has slipped away and I have still not done it. The beauty about the Yorkshire Dales is no matter the time of year you can always find peace and tranquilly, something I treasure. The whole of this series of walks on the Herriot Way were all very enjoyable to watch and you sold this trail really well, great filming, editing and narration, cheers Alan

Like 2 👍 cracking views, well done on completing the circular. Still some signs of purple heather there too. Great spot for your second brew. Nice shot of the mining works. You really did cover a lot of extra miles getting all those shots of you walking into the distance. Nice shelter, looks clean, even the toilet. Great previous comment! Cows ❤ mmm Bolton Pie, looks wonderful. Great advice on this route and a wonderful resource. Officially smashed it ❤❤

Good on ya Ladies, most enjoyable and informative. I've bought the gear and the Herriot Way pocket guide book, .... I just need some reasonable weather; & being alone and in Leicestershire, a swift kick in the rear for me to take the plunge for my first ever proper hike!

Hi, you’ll love the Herriot Way. When you reach Keld, I’d recommend the high route. The views are breathe taking. Let’s hope for better weather soon. Yes, the west he has been a mixed bag. Bring on the sunshine! 🌞

@@ramblingracheltrailtales Thank you, I’ll remember that once there. I did wonder if maybe I should break myself in with a Circular tour around the Vally first, from say Usher Gap Campsite to Thwaite, following the valley around clockwise to Angram, Keld, and then along the Swale valley following the River Swale and end at Muker for Stores before heading back to Usha Gap Site for the evening. Moving the Car next day to the Start point of the Herriot Way if all has gone well with my joints. 😂 I will be equipped for a 'Wild camp' ⛺if that proves to be too much for my first Hike. Would really welcome your thoughts on that, 🤔... I’m not looking to have my ear’s tickled, if you think that Idea is daft/rubbish please say so; as I don’t want my first attempt to put me off for life, for what little I may have left that is. 😏Thank you Rachel. PS: Don't worry if too busy to reply.

Hi Rachel! 🌿🌼 Your journey along the Herriot Way was absolutely picturesque. The landscapes and the castle were breathtaking, and that pie looked delicious! 🏰😋 I hope you're doing well, and it's great to see your videos again. I'm sorry to hear about your eye infection; I hope you're fully recovered now and enjoying your adventures.
The views you captured were truly amazing, especially those shots of you walking into the distance. The shelter and even the toilet seemed surprisingly clean - a rare find in the wild! 😄 The Bolton Pie must have been a delightful treat during your adventure. Thanks for sharing your route and experiences; it's a fantastic resource for anyone planning a similar trip.
Your Yorkshire Dales adventure was a great finale, and I couldn't help but chuckle at the mention of keeping the beauty of Yorkshire a secret from the crowds. 🤐 I hope you have a wonderful weekend, Rachel! 🚶‍♀🌲👍

    Hi Rachel,
Nice to see the final instalment, surprised to see it was filmed back in July, that seems ages ago. Amazed to see how much water was rushing over the falls at Aysgarth after the June droughts. Nice to see the hunting lodge left unlocked and not having been defaced or vandalised. Don’t think it would last long in Berkshire. Just watched your short vid driving along Bur Way, that looks much more recent, is there a Long Mynd adventure on its way?
    Cheers
    Graham
