Rick and Morty just OBLITERATED the 4th Wall | Full Meta JackRick Breakdown

- Rick and Morty is back after a 6 week hiatus and their first point of order? Absolutely demolish the 4th wall. Like, completely obliterate it. Even more than the episode’s predecessor, Never Ricking Mort, aka The Story Train episode from season 4.
Full Meta Jackrick definitely lives up to its name with almost nauseating amounts of meta commentary, but the episode is also doing meta commentary ON meta commentary. Meta meta commentary. It was a lot. Let’s break it down and talk about if it actually means anything in the scheme of the show!

Brett retconning his name to Rhett was the funniest part
Bringing up sports then Brett Con had to be a dig at Brett Favre. It's just too topical lol
It is and always has been
Wdym he never changed his name it was always Rhett.
If you really think about it, this is the first ever season of Rick and morty that has everything in the opening sequence happen in actual episodes of the season
lol yeah its really next level meta
In that case Season 2 also counts with Rixty Minutes' Poopy Butthole invasion. I love when they cleverly use the opening.
But in this episode it’s rick and morty going through the opening sequences in the episode with mrpoopybutthole he was just photoshopped in
Oh yeah 😅
i really wanna know what happened to buttermorty
It's obvious Dan Harmon loves metahumor. This is the man that made community, which is filled with meta jokes, and Rick and morty which constantly has 4th wall breaks and 2 entire episodes about meta. If Harmon didn't absolutely love meta he just wouldn't do it.
But it's also obvious Dan Harmon realizes most people think it's too circlejerky to enjoy long stetches of. That's why he has to criticize meta humor, even tho he doing it and obviously loves it.
You cant really have a character that loves meta humor, or else it starts becoming a circlejerk of a show about how the character and author is just in love with everything they do. That's why Rick hates meta even tho he's constantly breaking the 4th wall, that's why story train guy and previous Leon were annoying bad guys, that's why Jeff yells at abed to stop being meta. So The Rick and morty writers have to criticize it, or else is by bdefault a Circlejerk and nobody wants to see that. Most people think it is anyways, but at least this episode tuned it so finely (imo) so most people will at least consider it good.
I dunno dude. This one felt like an apogee and writers of circlejerking
circle jerk. circle of trains harnessing motivation. ye i think you seen the metaphor
I understand but this has to be my least favorite episode, it’s like if someone is really annoying but is self aware they are annoying and make jokes about it, but then you still think they are annoying
He also loves stalking and incest, dont forget that)
Previous Leon is one of the hardest names I’ve heard in awhile. This episode was full of awesome new characters!
This episode made me realize the writers thought the joke in season 1 that people liked was rick breaking the 4th wall and saying "100 YEARS, 100 YEARS RICK AND MORTY" because it played like if that was an entire episode
Look at Dan Harmons history. He loves meta humor. It's in most of his works. You're not going to make multiple episodes solely about meta humor if you don't absolutely love it.
@@mason8787 one of most boring tedious episodes yet
@@KW-tx6er I agree that some people will hate it, but I have a feeling some people like me will absolutely love it.
But that's the nature of meta humor. Either you're in on the obnoxious circle jerk, or your standing far away being disappointed at the group of people rolling on the floor at their own jokes.
@@mason8787 no wonder the the blue writer alien looks exactly like him. I'm amazed he had the restraint to not voice him at least.
Next "meta" episode is just going to be Harmon without a shirt with his moobs painted blue doing fucking stend-up for 20 minutes, just you wait.
@@deptusmechanikus7362 holy Frick I need this
Its actually nice how ret-conns powers actually worked on rick, the “you always trusted me” made rick trust him enough to lower down the cage, rick should have known ret conn wont let them free

Yes thank you for putting it into simple words. That's my problem with much of the meta-commentary in recent animation series as well.
It really undercut the S5 finale for me as well with the detoriating dialogue between Evil Morty and Rick ("The quality of the dialogue doesn't matter" - well yes, it does matter! That's what a story being told is all about!). For me this way the writers complain about something they are guilty of doing the exact moment - destroying the sense of the story for the sake of it.
basically it never goes well when you want to tell a story purely about a certain trope or genre you absolutely loath. Because then it's just gonna be very shallow and everyone who interacts with it will be miserable.
Honestly meta commentary never hits for me. I would rather the stories be fully immersed within the world the creators made.
Meta commentary works if its subtextual I feel
I've always had a soft spot for super meta episodes or scenes so I really liked this episode, I've got to say that my favorite moment from the episode was when Morty said that Rick messed up and killed them and Rick just admitted that he made a mistake and has no defense, that's just not something I could see happening in season 3, 4, or 5 so it's always just super refreshing when Rick isn't a god and can't just pull some previously unseen invention out of his ass to save the day, it's just really nice to see him struggle and have to put in effort to solve his problems especially when Rick was beat up by Jesus and the story train guy before he got powered down
yeah, season 6 to me feels like its really matured
It took me way too long to realize that Brett's first line to Rick and Morty is already him trying to use his powers
To me, this show didn't actually break the 4th wall, it embraced it and played with it. that's why I enjoyed it, it was an episode you can enjoy like any other episode, the topic is just the 4th wall, but it doesn't break it because breaking the 4th wall involves breaking the illusion these are fictional characters written for our entertainment, instead- this episode actually re-enforces the 4th wall by making the characters themselves part of the the 'breaking', which just further sells you the illusion of the story and the characters going through the story, which makes the 4th wall near unbreakable unless you are a stingy critic that can't have fun with the premise(and for those people, you still have Rick saying my favorite line, paraphrasing here, but he says: "Lets get this over with, his life doesn't matter Morty, *your's* does", while looking directly at the screen for a split second; short enough to miss it if you don't pay attention or think about it, long enough for the people obsessed with the show and looking into things to notice.).
This was an episode full of meta and self awareness, and I could tolerate that, probably.
What episode is this
@@ragnifier S6E7
Joseph Campbell being voiced by Dan Harmon was a really satisfying nod to Harmon's reverence of the hero's journey story structure.
I hope this is the last time R&M go meta. It wasn't bad the first time they pulled this in Season 4 but the idea has served it's time by this point. It's also weird that both meta-related episodes came after hiatuses in the show.
We can hope that, but there’s no way they don’t do it again in the next 4 seasons
It’s probably just me, but with all the confirmed episodes left to go with this show, I feel like it’s turning into the modern day Simpsons, where it’s just being milked for all it has to offer by the network.
Fr that's exactly what happened with the simpsons.
My only problem with the new season is that a lot of episodes moves to quickly with to much happening in them, which was definitely the case with this one. Other than that and the fortune cookie episode, I feel like this season has been really solid so far!
If you loved this episode you might like Nathan Fielder's The Rehersal, specifically episode 4. I'm a huge meta humor fan and these are the 2 episodes this year that I can't stop thinking about.
Also shout out to Community.
Community does meta way better than this show, so yes please watch it instead.
Community takes itself more seriously while doing meta humor. Almost like it's a real show that knows its a real show.
R&M treats meta humor with the gratefulness of a sledgehammer. Like it's a cartoon that knows its a cartoon. Imo when done well it can lead to amazing episodes, but when it falls flat it falls flat hard.
Man I'm kinda done with this hyper self aware meta humour. There were parts of this episode where my brain just completely switched off because of how deliberately convoluted it was. You might say that's the point, it's a critism of meta humour, but we already had that and it was the story train episode. We didn't need it again. I just wish this show would take itself slightly more seriously now and again, instead of spitting on people for giving a shit about its stakes or continuity.
+1
Previous Leon as name had to be the best thing I’ve ever heard lmao
I loved that Joseph Campbell was like the physical embodiment of my screenwriting professor. His whole motto for storytelling is "honesty trumps cleverness" and he's had the exact same reaction to the hack writer in the end to students who wildly overthink their premises to be cool/clever, myself included at times lmao.
Season 6 has been great so far but this felt like a season 5 episode.
This is definitely my favourite season and I really enjoyed this episode. I feel like we had a break because ,from what the description of the next episode on Sky says, these 4 episodes could all be related in a way that'll impact Rick and Morty for the foreseeable future
One part of this episode's meta commentary that really hit me was shortly after Previous Leon takes Jesus on a `previously on' trip. Once that sequence was done, Rick whacks Previous Leon in the head, which gets Morty to say "Geez Rick, so mean", with Rick replying "He's meta Morty, his life doesn't matter" and then Rick looks directly at the camera and says "Yours does". It was incredibly brief and seemed like he was talking to the viewer in that moment, which would be completely in line with the episode's meta plotline.
I love that you change what you call (B)Ret Con after showing the clip of him retconing his name great little detail
I think the writers always new it was going to be a polarizing episode especially with the reception the Never Ricking Morty received. I respect them for sticking to it though. While the episode is about meta commentary on a micro level, when you look at it on a macro level it's actually an homage to Joseph Campbell. With how integral the story circle is to Dan Harmon's writing and Rick and Morty in general, it is nice to see an episode that recognizes those roots.
Personally, I became incredibly jaded in season 3 when it came to meta humour. I remember the exact moment was in the episode where Jerry dates the space warrior and Morty says "You've been handed a deus ex machina. Just take it". At the time it felt like something Morty would just never say or do and I was uncomfortable with anyone but Rick making meta commentary (which is funny because the writers actually acknowledge that in the new episode) and considering the large gap between season 2 and season 3 it definitely seemed like the show had stopped being "classic rick and morty". Regardless, I still enjoyed the show but I wasn't in love with it like I was before. It was actually when I watched Never Ricking Morty that I fell in love with the show again as well as with meta humour. Throughout season 3 it felt like the writers were using meta humour in a lazy and cynical way similar to how shows like the big bang theory use reference humour when they can't think of a real joke. However, when I watched Never Ricking Morty and saw how much they embraced meta humour in an incredibly ambitious way, I realized that this isn't some cynical lazy tool the writers use. Meta humour is something that the writers genuinely love and are passionate about.
The way I see it is that Interdimensional cable is the purest form of Justin Roiland's improvisational style. It's a chance for him to just have fun and do whatever he wants. On the flip side of things, these Story Lord episodes are the purest form of Dan Harmon's style. They're obnoxiously convoluted and overly-ambitious but my god is it fun to see the creators of a show having fun.
I would much rather have episodes like this than have whatever the Rick and Morty equivalent of "Lisa Goes Gaga" is. But I do recognize that I have a much higher tolerance for this type of story telling then most people and no, it's not because I'm smarter or know more about writing. I'd say it might even be the opposite. If I knew more about writing there's a good chance I would outright hate these episodes. I think it's just about personal preference.
If any Rick and Morty writers read this, the advice I would give you is to think of Story Lord episodes and Interdimensional Cable episodes as the Rick and Morty equivalent of Treehouse of Horror. That way you can maintain character development and serialization and whatever in the rest of the episodes while also having this meta sandbox that you can return to every season to tell more ambitious stories. I like it when Rick acknowledges meta stuff. I see him similar to how I see Abed however I think when Morty or Jerry show an ability to accurately meta analyze their current situation in real time and apply writing terminology to it, it just seems like the characters have ceased to exist and the writers are all that remain.
That's a good way of looking at it, even though I don't like this episode it is interesting to see Dan Harmon just Harmon all over me.
This was a MUCH better episode than the story train one. Story train one is the one episode of this series I routinely skip on rewatches. I could see myself watching this one again though.
Its funny cus Story Train is one of my favorites, but this one I don’t see me rewatching.
@@NotQuiteAllHere This one is alot more clever than story-train episode imo
@@TH-cx2yx it’s boring as hell
Rick complaining about Covid at the end of story train is probably the hardest I laughed at a joke. It's not even that funny. But lockdowns had just started up and Rick dropping such a topical real word reference caught me completely off guard.

"What's my purpose?"
"You have to be f*cking kidding me"
After that 4 weeks break i would have thought that ep would be a banger with rick prime or evil morty
I mean, that could always happen in the remaining 3 episodes of the season
Yeah this episode shouldve been saved for earlier feels weird to have them come back and do a filler episode lile this
I think Joseph Campbell telling Morty what to say (an ability he has a lot of practice with after using the Death Crystal) to manipulate Story Lord's writer into giving him up in only the way another writer could, so that Story Lord lost his powers and Rick could beat him, was actually a really fun premise.
This episode seemed like a spit in the face towards the part of the fan base that gets so attached to the reality they created. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but the idea that the "deep lore" is anything more than a means to the end of exploring sci-fi ideas in comedy is kinda silly imo. I loved this episode, I think it's a great concept for a one off.
To illustrate my point the, die-hard part of that episode was literally just a justification for exploring the idea of one person split up into 7 billion people and yadda yadda what ensues bc of it. If you're looking to expand the bitz and chitz lore during the episode like what's good w you?
I wonder if there is a parallel there, like we've gone through Rick struggling with the conflict of believing that BP and his family matters, even though with the multiverse nothing should matter. Does Rick and Morty not matter because it's a silly cartoon that doesn't even take its own reality seriously, or does it matter because, like Rick, we irrationally decided that it matters to us?
So half way through the season, we got our answer. No we cannot have a season of rick and morty without annoying meta shit.
This is exactly how I feel. I’m really sick of it, the only thing I could think throughout this episode is that it was funny outside all of the meta shit. Either just do it or not, stop talking about being meta ffs.
Honestly, this episode was unbearable. At this point the writers are actually screaming "please stop throwing money at us" and the audiences just keep giggling because haha funny meta-commentary.
i really enjoyed this episode, I found it to be very funny especially the personifications of writing tools, I can't wait for the rest of the episodes!
i think "an episode that uses a weak premise as a commentary on weak premises is still a weak premise" sums up my own thoughts on this episode perfectly. by no means is it a bad episode, the quality was through the ROOF n the gags were all absolutely on-point, it was a very entertaining watch, but when rick and morty do meta-meta episodes like this i always just find it to be a chore of decoding writer intent, because it feels like a message to the viewer more than an episode of a show. it feels like a ball of wasted potential (ironically the point of the episode this one follows up), because why bother making an entire premier/finale-quality episode about your thoughts on your own meta humor when you could just. not do that. and just make your show the way you want to make it. it very quickly becomes an ouroboros of self-explanation, cuz past a certain point you're just talking in circles about something you and everyone else in the room either already understands or doesn't care about instead of actually doing something, and so you spend a lot of time and effort accomplishing jack-diddly-squat
I liked this episode, it was a nice change of pace and i respect a show for expirimenting cuz why not, they got like 5 more seasons ordered up anyways. The episode doesn't have to be Canon and is cool as an art piece for the writers to mess with.
Is it just me, or does the metatextual stuff get annoyingly old after a while?
That's the point.
No. Not after a while. It gets annoying almost immediately.
If there are no rules, everything is possible, nothing has meaning. Boring
@@mirabletest Nothing has meaning unless you give it meaning.

But at times it gets old

Gosh this episode was like the ending of She-Hulk Attorney At Law and all the Meta episodes of Community but in Rick and Morty and in the style
Bret Con is hilarious IMO. I loved how they captured Him as a Dr. Manhatten like Character so perfectly. I've listened to some of the comics from some various CZcamsrs and it really seems spot on.
I need to go watch this episode asap to go see youre video right after haha, but i was wondering, do you think mayby doing an inside job part 2 video? I’d love to see that, especially with all that happened in the last episode (i cried a bit lol 😅) and also all the world explanation that was awesome Edit: i personally loved the episode but very much felt tired too in the last act, i hope this wont affect the show too much, since they literally had a scene of Morty literally puking from realizing hes in a show i could see this having an impact after all, and just a great video as usual by the way 👌😁
I hope the cookie magneto is a one off thing. There last few episodes where they just sit there and basically do cinema sins have been very boring and bad. Like the one where it’s just them saying they don’t like highest movies the whole time.
It’s gets very frustrating watching a show that constantly explains the things we don’t like and aren’t good about it while simultaneously continuing to do those things.

This was a great episode. Felt like a good old season 1 totally normal self contained plot.
funniest thing for me was that I randomly watched the story train episode in the morning yesterday and when I saw that s6 had a new ep it was literally the continuation of that lol
I had to watch the episode a few times to appreciate it for what it was, as it's so dense with information. While I agree with what you said about using a weak premise to criticize a weak premise, they did this in such a well-thought-out way that after watching it a few times it's probably one of the better episodes of the season for me.

This should be a terrible episode but I loved it. Then again, I especially enjoyed the pun names, so my bar for humor wasn't high.
Well when are they gonna fix that wall? It’s getting drafty in here.
I found this episode really enjoyable! One aspect that I liked and you didn't mention is that it was super fast passed, so the resolution that you described as not satisfing didn't bother me. For me this episode is a fun wanky adventure that just has a ton of meta humour!
for a midseason premiere, I'm very disappointed. This one will be skipped during subsequent rewatches of the show/season. Now I feel like I have to wait another week for the season to REALLY continue.
I really enjoyed the episode if not for the meta humour but for the way it seems to be speaking about criticisms from both fans and critics a like. Making references to Season 1 and 3 was good to see as I too am tired of the same type of fans harping on about how they want it to be like season 1 again haha.
It was a nice little filler episode but I kinda hope we don't see another one for at least a little while as I think it made the point we needed it to.
Great video as always man, always appreciate your views
I really liked this episode personally. I thought it was super creative and actually pretty funny
It's not really creative. These ideas have all been done before. It's honestly kind of hacky
It's good though because it's self-aware of what it's doing
The conversation that the writer has with himself through this script was a fine one to have.
“These ideas have all been done before”. Really? Where have you ever seen a previously on bug named Preves Leon who sucks the life out of you while making you think you are in a previously on segment of a tv show? Also where have you ever seen a toy train conductor team up with Jesus Christ to fight a genius old man and his grandson by stealing motivation from the universe? The show was pretty good imo.
@@KingOfWinter The ideas of personifying different aspects of life and storytelling have been done before (Neil Gaiman's Sandman)

Damn you made this fast
Can you do a video on inside job part 2?
Nice touch Mr. Twist didn't lose his teeth when he lost his bones
I think I need to rewatch the episode again, but it feels like there are some things with the 3rd act.
The writer of Story Lord looks like Dan Harmon, and at times, it wasn't clear to me whether he is commenting on the original meta episode or whether he is commenting on the show as a whole.
The same with when Story Lord says he could be the new Mr Nimbus. He is suggesting Rick (or maybe the writers or audience) that he could become Rick's new nemesis -- something that the audience saw Evil Morty as, but he is gone now. They also suggested in that first episode that Prime Rick was going to be Rick's new nemesis, but haven't featured him since.
This might be then poking fun at what the writers wanted versus what fans wanted, and who ultimately won out -- that fans have decided that Rick's nemesis is going to be Evil Morty/Prime Rick and that things need to go the more canonical direction.
There is probably also something to be said about the writer having to kill his own creation with the Rick merchandise
It's interesting how they made a conscious choice to show but not use chekovs gun
Didn't really work for me. I think I'm more critical of meta humor than your average viewer, especially when it's deeply saturated like this episode. There were some fun moments like with the plot device superheroes and I kind of like that the writers are so open with creating a dialogue with the viewers but I don't think it was executed very well. Often times meta humor feels lazy to me and yeah, I felt like a lot of this episode was pretty lazy. I don't know why I like it better when South Park has Tegridy and Credigree fight over actual streams. I think one of the beautiful things about storytelling is that it doesn't have to be literal and you can express things in a way that's more nuanced and easy to digest.
One of the things with the south park episode is they commentate on the state of the world and media a lot so the streaming wars felt really natural, hell, they could have even made it about actual streaming platforms and it would still feel right at home with the show. But then there's also the part where the whole making the boat sub plot was supposed to about Matt and Trey themselves and this is easily over looked if you didn't really know about them having deals with two platforms.
I feel like this show is just about meta commentary now. I’m just not a fan of it personally. I’m happy other people enjoy it but I do miss the earlier seasons.
@@Thatonegirl989 Yeah, it feels like they complain and lash out at fans more than just having fun episodes at this point...
I’m still trying to wrap my head around the family guy jab at Rick and Morty. It was the terminator episode and when Brian and Stewie go to the future they use Rick’s portal gun. When questioned Stewie answers passive aggressively that he borrowed from Rick and Morty because “they borrowed plenty from us”. I don’t believe road to the multiverse can be all that they are referring to but if that’s just it then they clearly are just envious of ANOTHER adult cartoon that has a family in it.
