Man, I just got out of the hospital with a heart stent yesterday, but these Skinner flounder videos have me getting my jigs and plastics together to make a run to the coast tomorrow.
Actually last summer after just watching one video I put together a couple of jig setups and tried them at San Luis Pass. After about three casts off the second bar i hooked a nice flounder. Blew my mind, as I have been fishing that beach for years and never saw a flounder caught. I'll be after them tomorrow. Thanks John for the info!!
Wow just seeing this out of the box czcams.com/users/postUgkxQr1yd4Zc6qJF-scTB6Zb9dQbVpviuRxB recommend I have yet to fish with this set up, but based on the first hands on appeal, I can tell this is going to change the way i pack and carry to a whole new level. If you fish like i do, you know the smaller and less stuff the better. I’ve added a photo of just some of my gear so you can see how serious i am about fishing.
John your videos are great. No frills just fishing and a lot of great information from you. Would love to read your book.
Now that is what I needed to see! Coming up empty in back bays for fluke this month. Very difficult to want to go on the boat now. But this beach video has given me hope! Be on my beach tomorrow! Thanks keep the videos rolling!
John I have watched all your flounder videos. I appreciate everything you taught me. Your videos are insightful and exceptional. I have taught my son and his friends your flounder technique. I fish at a pier in NC and have seen guys fishing ur technique and I tell the guys"ur fishing like John Skinner!" They know who you are, seen ur videos and repeat ur video portions verbatim. Lol. Appreciate all the time and effort you put into all your wonderful videos. I have learned so much from you!!! Thank you John!!,
I guess I am kinda off topic but does anyone know a good website to stream new tv shows online?
@Chance Kaiser Ehh I watch on flixportal. Just search on google after it=) -maddux
@Maddux Camden Thanks, signed up and it seems to work =) Appreciate it!
@Chance Kaiser glad I could help :D
What a doormat. It took me until yesterday 8/15 to land a keeper, and nothing like that one. Brings my ratio for the summer up to approx. 147-1! Thanks John, definitely re-energized me to get back out there. BTW, I'm using your rig, love it.
I recently headed to LBI New Jersey and gave your technique a try. The water was very rough for the first couple of days, but once it calmed down I caught fish using your rig and jigging. I am a long-time freshwater fisherman, but had never surf fished before. It was lots of fun. However, one of the fish I caught, was a Stargazer! I had absolutely no idea what it was. I wish I had seen your video about flats fishing beforehand. It tried to stick me with the spines when I picked it up, and I was holding it by the head while removing the hook. No shock! I got very lucky! Thanks for the great videos!
John,
I have been watching your videos for some time now. I try to adapt your style with mine. Recently I had done some surf fishing....fluke. Did the wave brake " thing"....worked like a charm. No door mats but I was catching...not fishing. Thank you.
you probably have the best youtube chanel , i learned aloooot from
your videos about fishing.
q
just the type of video I've been looking for... this goes along with the questions that I had previously asked you John. Great Fish and much appreciated for sharing!
Excellent tutorial, John. I love the Gulp setup you use. I have used the same thing at Great Kills park and have had great results. Keep up the videos. Very imformative.
Fantastic stuff John! I just got done fishing at the field 10 piers today at jones beach using your jigging method. No luck today but this method looks promising. Thank You for sharing.
Here in North Carolina on a incoming tide before the sun breaks the horizion often flounder will wash up on the shore feeding as you are saying and wash back on the next wave. Nice flounder, and thanks for your videos!!
This video is timeless and always makes me hungry for flukes.
You do an excellent job of explaining "why" I catch fish where I do in the surf.
Outstanding as usual. You really do explain your tackle and tactics well.
Thanks for info. Heading down NEXT fall before i die. Biggest goal to catch a flounder and a dozen decent blue crab for me and my Dad to cook on the beach, camping in my 2000 Expedition with our dogs.
Thank You SOOOOO much!
We're poor, and this is our lifelong dream.
Guys who shun fluke fishing don't know what they are missing! Doormats are awesome.
It's a lazy mans fish a majority of the time
I'm not sure I believe that it's a lazy man's fish. True, I like surfcasting for stripers BUT catching a fluke with bucktails involves a lot of skill and art like John Skinner demonstrates AND the bigger fluke put up a decent fight and they taste great.
@DawgYankee definitely great but have had triple tail? In my opinion that's the best
DawgYankee I think sea robin is the best tasting
My biggest fluke was just over 3lbs. I always wanted to catch a 7lbr... A true doormat!
Going to the beach next week, thanks for the refresher course!
I caught my first fluke yesterday 21” at herring point in cape henolopen park. The waves were big but I had fun. Thanks for the great advice
Nice! It can be a challenge in rough water.
your videos are awesome! I will definitely have to check out your books ASAP
love your videos , and love the way you explain things in a very simple way love your Technique and thanks for the help
Just caught one last week that was 20 inches.. I had the biggest catch...luv da video..shalom from nyc
That's one good doormat fluke, awesome. Now I fishing when I could .thanks .cool video
Subscribed! Looks so much more fun than burning a gotcha for spanish and blues!
John, I love all your videos, very informative. When is the best time to catch flounder in the surf, incoming tide or outgoing tide? What color Gulp minnow works best for clear water & what color works best for stained water? Thank you.
That is amazing. Can't wait till next summer to try this.
14 pounder at Sebastian inlet Florida. 1986. Good old fishing days. Live finger mullet. Nice fish dude
You did very well! Thanks for the video and the tips. I'll definitely try this technique. Congrats!
Excellent suggestion, John. Gave it a try at Emerald Isle, NC after cut baits thrown out deep came up blank and I found success. Flounder and lizardfish!
Awesome!
Great video with vey helpful tips and some great content in the video. Good job and thank you.
Enjoyed the video. Good information as well. Keep up the good work!!!!
Thanks for the great video
headed to Florida in couple weeks, hope we catch some dinner!
I get it why you are an author. This guy is an amazing orator and killer video. Thank you.
great video, an no one else in the area that's great. You have some nice stretches of beach in long island.
mike scarano and it was Saturday 11 a.m...
Thanks for doing all these videos. They have been very helpful. Any suggestion for fishing inlet jetties for flounder. All i seem to do is loose rigs.
very nice, will try some of that here in Portugal
Nice catch John! I am going to give it a try!
John, thanks for these excellent videos (including the underwater footage). I just moved to coastal VA and am looking forward to doing some flounder fishing from the local piers and beaches. Just curious - I see you using both spinning rigs and bait casting rigs - when do you use one vs the other? What rod action do you recommend? Once again, thanks!
Nice video Mr john ... 👏🏾 what a great pic you get from that fluke ...!
christo santOs Yeah - no one in sight on the beach until I land that fish, and some lady walks by and says "oh, doormat", and she kindly took the pictures.
Would this tactic be effective in the winter months? Your videos helped me get on my first flounder this summer, and I was wondering if this technique was seasonally dependent. Thanks, John!
I’m John Skinner and this is my Master Class.
John,I'm looking to upgrade my fluke set up, and need some advice.I'm going to go to a Penn Clash 2500 or a Penn Clash 4000 (haven't decided yet). For a rod (my main concern), I'm looking for a good graphite rod (6'6-7ft) needs to be 2 pc (travel in car), for salt water/inshore, I'd like a fast action in a medium - medium/heavy rod.I've found several Penn rods I like, but they are not offered in 2 pc.Suggestions on rod? reel suggestions welcome also...Thanks.
Great video nice catches,i can't wait to try your technique, i did not know this information thanks.
nice, the way you make the jiging motion, I thought i was doing it all wrong!!! ive had no luck so far, I will try using gulp shrimp
Update-Some time during December, I caught a flounder with gulp shrimp, I guess I need to think of the prize that comes from patience.
Thanks for the tips, great looking fluke
Very good as always! Keep up the good work! Love the videos
Hey John, I was wondering what rod and reel i would need (length, action and power) for striper and flounder fishing from the shore
Hey Mr. Skinner was wondering how exactly you tied that rig up? Also how to you keep the upper jig from tangling up with the lower ?
Good fishing John, you make it look easy

Hello Mr. Skinner. My mane is Jessie Gelsebach. We will be holding an outdoor expo sometime in 2018 and were hoping that you could be a guest speaker. This event will bring together the entire outdoor community, from fishing to skiing, we would like to be the first to hold this type of event. We also want all ages involved, so we will have something for everyone.
Hi John,
Quick question: in your videos you have mentioned you use different Penn reel models like Clash, Conflict and the Spinfisher. If I want to fish from the shore, with possibility of getting the reel in the water, what reel would you recommend (lower than $200)?
I have been very tempted to go for Spinfisher (I think is black & gold).. but not sure is that will deal well with occasional saltwater splashes.
Thanks for your advice!
John, what size tactical anglers clips do you use? Thanks. Enjoyed a lot of success this summer on the surf in NJ (fluke, snapper blues and a northern stargazer) thanks to your videos and books. Hoping to catch my first striper in the coming weeks.
Nice fish, I was out on the weekend but biggest fluke was 15". Great video!!
not even close to legal in connecticut
gave this a go last night (hampton bays) caught one within 15 minutes. he was only 14-15". gave up in the darkness and all the bugs out. will try again in the early morning/late afternoon.
do you work diagonal along the shoreline or just cast out from the shoreline which one works better
Is there a particular brand of fluorocarbon you use on the surf vs boat? Thank you.
New to striper fishing have been fishing for fluke for a while though...what do you recommend using for stripers and blue fish off an inlet?
An awesome video. First class job!
Yes david , John is a Top Gun !
Totally agree about the calm surf conditions being better for fluke. Anything over knee high surf and I won't even bother.
Another excellent video John! Beautiful fish too!
Larry
Awesome catch and video!
How do you determine what area to concentrate on? Im sure you saw some subtle hint to fish in that specific area.
Nice fluke love the vids enjoy watching them.
I was fishing for blues along the surf in Jersey a couple of years ago, using a metal spoon. A fluke hit it right on the edge of the water, when I was about to lift the spoon out to cast. Wasn't that big, maybe 14 inches, but it surprised me because I caught him literally a couple feet off the beach, maybe in a foot of water. I had no idea they hugged the shoreline like that
What do you do if there is a lot of kelp or eel grass in the area? I had assumed if I could cast farther, I could reach deeper water, and have more time to jig before I get tangled up in kelp close to shore. From the sound of your advice, that may be counter productive. I fish a beach in jamaica bay, should I look for a different beach without kelp? What do you recommend?
What time of year can you target fluke in the surf. Ive been hearing mid summer. And can you target them in the bay around the same time? Love the vids!
Used this rig and technique all Summer (late May to Sept). off the NC beaches. We had only a short "open" season but the fishing was excellent all summer. Most days 10 fish was the norm (on 1-2 hour sessions). My best morning was a legit 30 flounder in an hour...never moved more than 50ft from first catch that morning. Largest 21" but many in the 16-20' range...also got a couple sea. trout and a pup red drum over the course of summer. 90% of fish caught on gulp shrimp top hook
I really appreciate you sharing that! That's some awesome fishing!
@@JohnSkinnerFishing Hoping to get a Yak soon and get busy in the sound and near the inlets
John, this video was helpful as I am looking forward to surf fishing for the first time. I have caught fluke out a little ways on a party fishing boat in cape cod numerous times. I am hoping to catch fluke from the beach (Mayflower beach) in Dennis, MA, which is part of The Cape. Do you recommend this? Is it likely to catch fluke on the Cape's beaches? Thanks so much from a total newbie. -Bethany
Have you or can you do a video on my old favorite? Large Peruvian Spearing and Squid Strip combo on a Bucktail Teaser? Also one on using Whole Squid?? Thanks. Enjoy the underwater videos. Very informative.
John, I can't find a 3.0 Gamakatsu bait holder hook. Which would work better a 2.0 or 4.0 for your surf flounder rig?
Great video, have you ever noticed if the presence of seals in the surf hurts the bite?? They cruise that same area that the fluke like to hang out in.
Hey John, i used to pound flounder on bucktail and swimming mullet in Jamaica Bay, I'm in florida now and i cannot catch any with same setup. I know flounder is there because I've caught them on live finger mullet. Any suggestions?
Hey John Skinner Fishing, I love your videos but unfortunately I can't exactly take advantage of your style in Oregon (or at least I don't think I can...). Do you have any friends or fellow fisherman who you can recommend for Pacific Northwest coastal fishing? Keep up the great videos!
When in the surf do you have a preference of the style jighead or does it not really matter?
John I was wondering if it's possible to catch fluke in the surf during low tide when the waves are breaking off the beach, or is that just a waste of time? is it essential that it's shore break catch fluke in the surf?
I have been doing this type of fishing in North Carolina. I have noticed that the smaller fish 10-15 inch fish tend to be farther out where as the larger ones 20+ are closer to the shore.
Being from Louisiana the Gulf of Mexico is where I salt water fish and I prefer surf fishing. Usually I walk out into the surf because I've always thought that's where the fish are. And I've never caught a flounder surf fishing. Now I know why; I was walking on and right past them. There's been a few times when walking out into the water something would slip from under my foot when I'd take a step. Well, next time I go surf fishing I will certainly be more equipped after seeing your video. Anyway, thank you for the info and video.
Mr. Skinner do you have any tip for fishing for Flounder in the Gulf Cost Surf..??
headed to Alabama coast this weekend. do these flounder feed the same way on the gulf?
Yeah, Skinner is the best.
He writes books 📚!!
Does the 20lb fluorocarbon make much difference? can I use 50lb fluorocarbon in a pinch?
Hello sir, do you know what distance are you gettinng?
So you are doing this with a 7' medium action Rod? I got some of the Spro 3/4 and 1 ounce jigs in today and ran some rigs like yours from the other video and with the 3/4 ounce it seems a little heavy on my Rod. Not sure that I can run 1 ounce with the two swimming mullets and not overload the Rod. Rod is a 7' medium/fast action for 3/8 to 3/4 lures.
Where exactly were you fishing? And do you know if the fluke are up in Martha's Vineyard late August/ early September
John, what color is the line you’re using? Followed the links (they are working now) but there were a few color options for the 15lb braid
Hi John, I was out there today in my hometown of Manasquan, NJ If you are familiar with the Manasquan Inlet I wasn't on the ocean side of the inlet(or near the jetty but I was on a small stretch of beach in the inlet. I'm new to fishing and was trying to mimic you.. I can see it takes a ton of practice to get that rapid jigging motion while reeling in but first cast, wham! right near the beach. Unfortunately it was 17 and 18 is a keeper in NJ. Caught another at 15 about 45 minutes later and that was it. I love your filet video but I was wondering when you catch a keeper, do you immediately throw it in a cooler of ice? I noticed you didn't gut the fluke in your filet video.
Any tips on unhooking flounder or stripers that inhaled the hook?
John fishing for false albacore at high moon at my camp when the kids go swiming what do me and my friends use I lost 1 and we got a few hits but we were just wondering
Hey John I'm Will I'm 14 and have a very strong relationship with fish and passion for fishing and in about a week I'm going to myrtle beach, South Carolina to fish for flounder on the shore.
