  • This is the SUV for someone who needs bigger, larger and more of everything. In a world where many SUVs and CUVs continue to pretend they are trucks the Expedition truly is and shares many of the good things about the Ford F150. There are other choices like the Lexus LX570, Chevy Suburban and now Kia Telluride the Expedition has a long history of high usage.

This seems far more realistic at $80,000 than the Edge does at $40,000.
Geese is a rare bird in that he strikes me as more of a car guy but he can put that aside and review a truck from a truck buyers perspective while keeping expectations realistic and objective.

Growing up my dad had a Suburban, then a Yukon XL, then an Expedition EL, and now he just bought another Expedition EL. When you have people sitting in all three rows of seats on a road trip, there is just not enough room for the entire family's luggage behind the 3rd row in the regular length versions. He won't even consider buying a Tahoe or a regular length Expedition because they just aren't as practical.

We bought one in Dec 2019. Bought a 2019 XLT with the 302A tech package. The dealer gave us lifetime powertrain warranty provided we get our maintenance done at QuickLane and majors (20k/60k/etc) done at the dealer. Bought the mid-level warranty on all electrical and tech for $50\mo. MSRP was $59k as driven. Walked out for $52k plus the warranty. I came from an F150 (and wife had a 2015 Tahoe). He’s right about the interior and materials, but he’s also right that the thing hauls. The 3.7eco is fantastic. Getting 21.5mpg on road trips, 17.1 overall average. Put 4500 miles on so far. Can I just say that I LIVE THIS THING. We named it the Battlewagon.
PS: my first car was a 93 Bronco which I lifted and kept for 13 years... this thing is comparable as far as ride height and command of the road.
PSS: drove the explorer... all I can say is WOW. $50k MSRP and the thing was a total joke. Terrible vehicle in my humble opinion.

Proud 2018 Platinum AWD with trailering package owner here. Its worth every penny in my opinion. I upgraded from a 2015 Impala LTZ and it has met /exceeded every expectation I had for it. You may reasonably ask "why not a Navi at this pricepoint?" and the answer is simply that I'm a ruffian and want something that felt like an F-150 with more luxury. This is it. Its a tonka truck with all the bells and whistles one could want in a heavy duty truck. I will be in the market for another once I'm done with this one in a decade or so.

(r/RoastMe) Ok- I'll take the bullet ...AMA . I bought a brand new Expedition Max Platinum last May. Exact model that is in this video except mine is blue. I thought this video did an excellent job of highlighting the pros and cons. Overall I am very pleased with it. A couple of things for anyone that cares...
    - I wanted a body on frame true truck. I traded in a 2013 F-150 FX4 and was very happy with that truck but now have different needs.
    - Hauling- Really great in this truck. Others have correctly pointed out that a Pacifica or a van does this better. This is true but see my other points. Towing... 4Wd... etc. I move my kids around with friends... hockey gear... in the dead of winter without problem and can even take some snowmobiles.
    - AWD/4WD- this is what I like best about this truck. You can select RWD or 4A which is 4 auto/AWD. You can drive in any conditions in 4A (including bone dry asphalt) as opposed to my previous F150 which was either 2WD or 4WD. Meaning I can set it and forget it. Especially great for rain and intermittent ice. Very underrated feature and critical for safety. If you want traditional 4WD you need to select "Mud/Ruts" or "Sand" in the Expedition and then it acts as if the center diff is locked.
    - Electronic Locking rear Diff- It isn't a true mechanical locker if you look it up but it works decently in a pinch. Especially in heavy snow and some mild mud.
-Towing- Up to 9200 lbs which I use to move a boat around, small camper, snowmobiles as well as other things to help at a family farm.
-Why not something else? What I originally wanted was a Land Cruiser. I would agree it is the superior truck but it just doesn't have the same interior space for families and road trips. I keep tools and other items in the center console... the little refrigerator (cool box) just wasn't a trade off worth it for me and the 2nd and 3rd row are much more usable in the expedition. I am 6'4 260 and other vehicles just don't cut it. Yes I am the oversized American that deserves your derision...
-Why not GM? I think this is a fair comparison. The Suburban is 3 inches longer FYI. Personally I like Fords. I like the EcoBoost as it is fast AF but I totally understand why you would disagree and take a V8. Also, the 2nd and 3rd row are much better in the Ford. Don't believe me- check it for yourself. Finally I find the 4Wd system better in the Ford than the GM twins.
Thank you for coming to my TED Talk

    • @jcpoiuy
      @jcpoiuy Před 5 lety +3

@@chltmdwp Couple of reasons . The main one was availability and service. The navigators were/are harder to get ahold of. Where I live the Lincoln dealership is a really small operation while the Ford dealership is just around the corner from me and has treated me very well in the past.
I also did not want the attention of driving a Lincoln. Would much rather blend in with a Ford. I think the interior of the Lincoln is a little gaudy and ultimately will not hold up as well as the Ford. You are already seeing this in follow up reviews with the Navigator. Too many "one offs" with Lincoln. The Expedition is more in line with its roots as an F150.

I happen to own an excursion myself, it’s just over 200,000 miles and runs amazing. It’s got that big ole v10 that you can’t buy anymore in a truck. With a small tune and keeping up with maintenance we have never had a problem with it. Honestly it runs better and feels more put together than any of the new vehicles I’ve test driven recently. We will never get rid of it as long as that car lives, which is hopefully forever. Only thing I will say though, is that it’s so heavy you have to be careful with breaks or you will warp them like no tomorrow. Had to switch to ceramic breaks to avoid that problem lol. Anyways, with these outrageous truck and car prices it would be difficult to justify buying a new truck like this expedition that costs 85,000$ when mine is still in perfect working condition. Though I do happen to like the new expedition, I just feel that they are too expensive these days it’s only gonna get worse. Awesome review though!

At 5 years old now, considering the depreciation, these things are quite a tempting value proposition compared to the suburban which inexplicably costs much more at similar age and mileage. I’ve seen very nice 1 owner 4x4 max limited examples with great maintenance records selling for around 40k.
With a warranty you’d be buying a solid used vehicle

In one way these transes have much aggressive primary gears and sometimes 4/5 overdrive ratios that results in better acceleration, fuel eco, better towing in steep inclines etc..... You said gear hunting that's a serious let down with this trans as well as Acura's... Is that a programming issue?

@Peder Hansen with Chrysler Corporation their vehicle lines from the bottom up were Dodge Division were generally baseline the mid level step upwards was the Plymouth Division before that division was shut down with the government bailout and the flagship luxury line was Chrysler.
Before the 1960's their were four Divisions of the Chrysler Corporation with Chrysler being the Flagship Luxury brand Dodge and Plymouth were Midtrim Level lines on par with each other and DeSoto was the Baseline inexpensive models which fell out of favor with consumers who could get a similar looking Dodge model slightly better equipped for just a little more money.
The Chrysler Pacifica is the 2017 Flagship Luxury Minivan replacement for the Town and Country discontinued in 2016 the Chrysler Voyager is the mid-range replacement of the discontinued Plymouth Voyager Minivan and rounding out the bottom is the Dodge Caravan and it's slightly more optionally equipped Grand Caravan.
