  • Showing parts and pieces on how to redo your small wind turbine (applies to S2, S3, and M3 Chinese turbines) to actually produce the dedicated power.
    A live test will be followed in the next videos. For now, only the parts and what to change.
    Additionally here are two videos about the upgraded generator itself:

    I worked at the company that originally designed these more than twenty years ago, "Southwest Windpower". The original product was called the Air. It had a much bigger rotor and stator (as it sold for much more than $100), and in high speed winds could produce well over 2KW when the regulation was disabled. The problem with doing that regularly was heat. But we never put bigger blades on them, because they were designed to survive extreme weather without any furling. One customer had deployed one of these at the south pole, and left it at a weather station over the winter. When they returned, the weather station had recorded peak wind gusts of 130 MPH, but the turbine was still operational. The original Air had an integrated charger, and could be purchased in a 12v, 24v or 48v configuration.

      that's actually great.
      in order to reduce heat you should solder all the joints way more then they normally do at the factory, and likely apply the special lacquer for the coils. these will be also the steps for me to ensure this tiny thing works a lot longer

      We had original Air marine, body corroded in 6 months, regulating in nacelle then running DC over a distance is stupid, never got any usable power, found plans online to modify turbine by removing said controller and running 3 phase AC into rectifier. So much more power.

    • @ModernUkrainianHomestead
      @ModernUkrainianHomestead  Před 3 měsíci

      @@jonathanpurves5066 it is already 3-phase AC wind turbine, so all great here. you are rectifying to DC only on the controller side.
      so far, I have it almost a year - no corrosion. Guess why? It has aluminum body. Same for the generator outer shells - they are aluminum.
      Chinese isn't that bad, tbh.

    One more thing. You, Me and others love how it starts turning with very low wind. Old Chinese Trick. Little to no grease in the bearings. Put in good bearings and see when it starts turning. Don't worry, When the wind is good enough to make power, it will turn.

      @ModernUkrainianHomestead  Před 4 měsíci +3

      mounting height + clean wind is the most important.
      also the blades lifting angle is what matters. in the new video (with the 3-blader and 5-blader wheels thumbnail) you will clearly see the difference between the blades and what makes the low-wind start actually happen.

  • @adly4128
    @adly4128 Před 13 hodinami

    If the generator is under designed , putting more blades may actually hinder it even more because the more blades will probably have lower rpm and will be more difficult for the generator even more.

    My 500-watt China does make some power geared 1.4 to 1. Had some wind above 8 mph in a storm and got some power last night. My turbines would do good in a windy area. I used 3 bigger blades instead of the 5 blades that came with it.

    How do you connect the coil? Working on one to demonstrate with students at my school

    • @ModernUkrainianHomestead
      @ModernUkrainianHomestead  Před 4 měsíci

      it's a factory made generator, so I did not do anything with the coils, just reconnected the three phase gen-output to the coal-brushes current transferring module.
      however, in case you are interested in its inner structure, here are some of the details:
      12 magnets on the rotor. then 39 gaps for the coils on the stator, of which 3 are left empty, and others are divided into sections of 12. coils are put into "from 1-st to 4-th gap". in the end all are combined into a classic star connection. however, since they do it at the factory - the single-phase-coil is uninterrupted, I have no idea how they manage to put it inside the gaps in the end, but that's how they produce it. looks like the generator has 12 poles only as well, however, it's mainly because of its relatively small size. in bigger size generators they normally use the 2/3 ratio of "magnet rows" / "coil-poles".

    • @ModernUkrainianHomestead

      in the same shape of blades and same size of blades conditions - yes, 5-blader will start at lower wind speeds than 3-blader.
      however, for this exact generator it appeared to be that 1.7m 3-blader hub (with a proper low-start bend on the blades) works so much better than this 1.3m 5-blader hub.

      @@ModernUkrainianHomestead They say two wrongs doesn't make a right but if you could reverse mount the blades (1. Mount it wrong, 2. Spin it in reverse), I think you may squeeze a few extra watts out of it. The extra watts could come from the expense of steering - instead of wasting energy trying to steer into the wind, it could just spend it on generating power. You may have to clip the tail off.
      You could also drill out most of the rotor to cut down the weight. This would squeeze a few extra watts out of it too.

    • @ModernUkrainianHomestead
      @ModernUkrainianHomestead  Před 5 měsíci +2

      actually the opposite it true about the weight - more weight will add more moment of inertia, which will make it spin more smoothly and will result in better output.
      also, it's impossible to mount the blades reversed - since they have specific mounting places with the predefined mom/dad items to fit with the hub if you know what I mean...

      Let me guess, you have got coils less of same amount as the magnets number?
      Be sure to use many-poles generator to get better voltage output (the ratio should at least be 3/2 for "coil poles"/"magnets", but you can go with bigger one for coils as well), also combine it always into the classic "star" three phase connection in the end.

    • @ModernUkrainianHomestead
      @ModernUkrainianHomestead  Před 5 měsíci +4

      no, this is not true. since I keep a lot, I keep the body and the looks, and change only what is easily changeable and goes to the exact same mounting places: the gen and the windwheel.
      the main upgrade is a gen, and since my gen appears to be a little bit too strong for the default windwheel - I had to get a new windwheel with way more torque. if I would have gone with a little bit less powerful gen - the same windwheel could've been left.

      I got my tiny S3 wind turbine just as a working model of HAWT. It showed me that it's possible to get something out of the horizontal turbines, and it's not possible to get anything from the vertical ones (I've got one tiny VAWT as well).
      Then I scaled up with the horizontal, and got a bigger one.
      However, I asked myself a question if this tiny S3 beast can be improved somehow, since the manufacturer definitely missed a lot of stuff that can be better.
