    Have you ever tried a 3ph contactor like the ones AC units have, with a 12vdc coil , then use it for the brake? You could probably find some way to automate the coil using a programmed VSR when your batteries are full or wind is too fast.

    • @JOHNDANIEL1
      @JOHNDANIEL1  Před rokem

      Yes, they tend to get cycled far too much and a 12 volt coil is rare to find. The majority are 24 volt. A 3 phase SSR works much better. It has a trigger voltage of 5 to 32 vdc.

    • @JOHNDANIEL1
      @JOHNDANIEL1  Před rokem

      Not Yet, I have shown over the years the methods, but due to a little out of the way cost I have not yet funded a complete one in my new system. In Idaho I had it but did not make much on it but now with Lithium getting actually affordable it may be a a needed video. A Battery slave system is using a few batteries as incoming wind power diffusers and not your main bank so you can best moderate the effect in a tuned way. It extends the entire battery banks lifespan. With LiFePO4 you can use lead acid slaves in a 24 volt arrangement to pass through charge a banks of 12 volt LiFePO4 via cheap PWM solar controllers. I will have to make a example of it soon.

    I have a rookie question, though. What actually happens with solar / wind power, when the batteries are fully charged? Is there danger of overcharging the batteries or is that electricity "magically" going to waste?
    Sorry, if that is a dumb question. I just simply understand far too little about the topic.

    • @lancealderman2755
      @lancealderman2755 Před rokem +2

      With solar the controller will simply stop charging the battery.
      With wind once you reach a certain voltage you switch to a dump load like a heating element or a brake like the switch where the wires are simply shorted until the voltage of the battery drops back down to less than fully charged.

    • @JOHNDANIEL1
      @JOHNDANIEL1  Před rokem +4

      The wise decision in that is to use an alternative collection instead of just burning off the energy. One of the ways that I've solved it is to use a few hundred amp hours of lithium and then return that charge to my lead acid in the middle of the night. Recent videos describe that on my channel.

      Resistors are for dump loading so that you can manage your battery voltage and prevent the turbine from overcharging, a break is so that you can park the turbine in an off position to keep it from being damaged and bad weather or service the turbine. The guy in Missouri uses a cheap plated contact toggle switch and they tend to burn up and let loose of your turbine at the wrong time.

      If engaged to stop the Turbine before heavy storms and winds it prevents turbine damage. Normal use of the brake is for service or if your not going to be home when a potential storm may hit. You can engage it at up to 20% power output without damaging windings. In case of a surprise wind storm you can when the turbine spins out of the wind due to torque if your fast also engage it before it gets spun back up. Owning a turbine is like owning a car, you don't run it in weather that will damage it. The turbines I use the 800 and 600 and the 500 also can handle sustained 40 mph, would survive 60 mph, but if gust may exceed 45 I park them before such forecast comes true.

      @@JOHNDANIEL1 but, I'm talking about the short circuit on all phases, you showed the proper way to brake the turbine and is with load resistors... Prevents the winding not to burn, the heatzone is on the resistors, not the turbine windings... I'm still confused...
      The schematic of your switch brake, looks like a short circuit.

      @@diogomartins9101PMA connected on dead short will not burn itself. It keeps itself stopped. Connect wires of a generator on short circuit, try to spin it and the generator feels heavy to turn. As he mentions, it could be possible to apply the short when there is little output without damaging the windings.

    I saw somewhere it was not good to put the turbine on brake for a long time. Is it true?

    • @JOHNDANIEL1
      @JOHNDANIEL1  Před rokem +1

      Yes, leaving one on brake for a long period of time, such as a week to 10 days or more can cause pitting in the slip ring and even some over saturation of magnetics in the core of the rotors.

    I can't find where I ask in comments that you said 5 years ago don't do this. It's ok now? What has changed? Was my comment deleted or did I just miss it?

    • @JOHNDANIEL1
      @JOHNDANIEL1  Před 6 měsíci

      Don't do this using a 6 terminal 15 amp toggle switch sold by hustlers in Missouri ( they sold 50K of them that cost $3 for $39 ) which will fuse, melt and blow up your turbine, some had house fires. Use spring loaded and DO NOT as shown in those Missouri scammers videos toss on that switch when your turbine is over spinning like they say is HOW to do it. Maybe their stuff can handle it since it made no power, but what we use would blow that junk switch system up.
      Numerous videos I show how to brake a turbine with pull or carbon spring switches. But NEVER use a fake brass tabbed missouri toggle unless you want damage.

      Those controllers run about 50 or 60 bucks you can get a complete one on the link about the middle of the stuff below the video. It'll be Wind and Sun OPC style controller in the description.

    Why didn't you write the brake switch at the end of the long cord like it is in real life, it wouldn't be so abrupt and hard on your wrist

    and its still generatin'.
