      Јоhn Daniel Here in Indiana we get roughly 10-15 mph winds and sometimes up to 30 especially in the spring and fall periods. I was thinking about about getting one of these small 300-400watt turbines to use with my garage. Does the factory controller control the turbine Incase of high winds and/or slow it down when the battery is fully charged or should I invest in resistors to stop it from over charging or damaging itself?

    • @JOHNDANIEL1
      @JOHNDANIEL1  Před 4 lety +2

      @@haulngrassracing Honestly the factory controller will work for most, but your winds are likely high enough to consider a actual diversion controller set up. Reason is the factory controller will constantly be hammering the turbine in and out of brake mode which is not healthy for it or your battery in wind averages over 12 to 14 mph. So I would suggest the diversion plan that allows the turbine to spin up but be loaded heavily instead of brake shorting the generators head so much.

      Јоhn Daniel 👍 Right now (even with green leaves on the trees which is crazy for this time of year here) the wind is steady at 18 mph and gust up to 27 mph. How do you feel about wind turbines connected to grid tie inverters? Seems to be a popular thing at the moment and I know what’s his name is on a ban spiel about it (solar guy that was homeless? Name leaves me at the moment?) but seeing as my garage is on its own meter I wonder if wind generator would be a viable option? It could act as a load generator if the batteries are full. But then again with everything shut off I don’t see my garage using next to nothing if I’m not out there so it still may need a resistive load 🤔 Still trying to come up with the best option that would best suit my needs. If I’m successful my wife might let me do it to the house 😁 By the way thanks for the informative videos, really enjoy watching and learning. I build Ebike batteries and tinker with 18650 cells and lots of batteries.

      @@haulngrassracing Start with about 1500 watts solar and 600 to 800 watts of wind and at least 8 of the GC2 style batteries with your plans to remove common use circuits from your shop/home breakers and placed on your system. Your starting right, but do not waste your time on wind/grid tie unless your planning on going 2000 watt or larger, even then payback is 5.5 years. But here is some study help, and direction to your current interest dakotalithium.com/our-batteries/?v=7516fd43adaa

    I am experimenting with 16 180ah Lifepo4 batteries and it's amazing the time's we are in now. With solar years ago things were possible but not money well spent. In the past several years with solar, wind and now lithium iron phosphate batteries... It it TOTALLY do able to be self sustainable. I'll post more vids of my build soon, but I did a test of 8 of the batteries on an emergency situation with my house and ran many things for 12 hours! . The dream is to build my next house with solar, wind and the batteries.
    Learning a lot from you as far as combining the wind into the dream.
    Thanks again John,

      Looks like your pushing on to modern methods. Age is so fast creeping up on me, I started using smaller tools due to carpal tunnel and hopefully my next build for my own system will be MUCH LIGHTER LiPo . I heavily suggest a B&D impact like this one bit.ly/2WkWbKR compared to my Milwaukee thats kicking my butt. Never thought that little 8 ounce less tool would be just as powerful as my Milwaukee and keep me going on solar installs so much longer. Being in my 50's now sucks!

    I trust this man as a installer more than I do a person selling them all over the place. He gets to test and try everything people buy that he installs. So if he don't want to install it I pay attention. So this cheap one is probably good build and I can order one to use with solar on a water well on a ranch.

      The better kit is the 500 watt 5 blade Wind turbine, with the 3 phase to DC controller and you provide batteries. czcams.com/video/GrL7OA0Kb4A/video.html If you have lower winds ( under 13 mph average ) get the 5 blade. They make rated power of 500+ watts at 23.5 mph and higher. Mine has hit over 1100 watts in 35 mph so be sure to run 8AWG wire at least. Or something equivalent. If you stay with one turbine you only need the provided controller. If you add more, you will need to change the set up to like mine
      I recommend at least 1600 watts solar, 2 - 60 amp MPPT controllers, 8 GC2 batteries and 1 or 2 of these wind turbines to get a full use of wind and sun power. If you need info on proven stuff let me know, you can't get into this by budgeting wrong or experimenting, that's very costly if you make a mistake.

    I've noticed 2 bad things:
    1. They don't put governors on these for some stupid reason!
    2. Power is being wasted in the dump load that could be sold to the grid.
    A governor would stabilize the RPM, and you could just disconnect the generator when not needed; it would prolong the life of the unit if it wasn't under load all the time!

    Sooo . . . when diverting power to those resistors, instead, you could hook those wires up to a grid tie inverter instead?
    Understanding that you tune your controllers to the output of the windmill and the local (average or peak?) windspeed, do you have a ballpark range for the cost of one of your controllers for a 12v system? Even a big price range is fine as it gives me a ballpark cost to factor in. Love your videos. Thanks :)

    • @JOHNDANIEL1
      @JOHNDANIEL1  Před 4 lety

      Grid tie inverters take a few seconds to activate when power is applied, so on and off 2 second over volt is not likely to equal enough cause to spend the money on a GTI. And the chance of unregulated voltage spikes, no battery to catch it in time, you would just as most who try it toast your GTI.

    How would you do a diversion with your controller when using a LifePo4 battery(ies)??? I want to do a hybrid system on the farm for my cabin (Central Canada). I want to be able to take advantage of the ability to charge / maintain the battery charge in no sun times (winter / night). However, how would a diversion work if the BMS on a LifePO4 battery shuts off current at full charge / low temp - the electronics in your diversion box would have no reference voltage from the battery?

    • @JOHNDANIEL1
      @JOHNDANIEL1  Před 2 lety

      On a Lifepo4 you will always have voltage present unless your BMS fails. Its accepting charge is to all cells, the BMS just does the balancing of cells to keep them equal. So by setting the divert to below the Lithium max charge rate you can do it. But I prefer a dedicated wind charger controller for Lifepo4 like these on this page s.click.aliexpress.com/e/_9iefAL

      I put a link down below the video to Ali where you can get the best water heating elements so your diversion can heat water. We do this in our place in the hills near Baker Nevada, we keep a 14 x 28 foot cabin warm with that process. Ours is mounted in 3 thirty gallon stainless steel barrels and a over temp diversion relay send power to a outside resistor bank if the water hits 140 degrees. The radiant heat from its tiny 8x8 basement keeps the shack warm in 0 degree weather. Always windy in the Nevada winter, and 8 batteries fill fast using 3 of these similar turbines.

    I'm thinking of buying either the 300 or 500w turbine that you suggest. My purpose would be to use it to supplement my solar thermal Mass heating setup by using the diverter load on a 300 to 500 watt 12 volt heating element. My question is, if I have a normal deep cycle battery attached to the wind turbine box that is fully charged at least most of the time would this setup be ideal to consistently help heat the water up on a daily basis when the sun is absent? Could you see a problem with this setup always dumping and not needing to charge the battery that often?
    I'm really hoping that this would be a solution helping my thermal Mass above freezing in January in northern Michigan. Where I am at just off a lake shore of Lake Huron we have consistent daily winds of 20 miles an hour in January and February.

I realize the part the resistance of the load plays in the scenario, I just wondered about another scenario I have with yours well wind and if I wanted to get the 300 watts that I need would it be advisable to go to a 600 watt 24 volt turbine to try to get near my needed consistent 300 watts in a 12 volt system? • @JOHNDANIEL1
      @JOHNDANIEL1  Před 5 lety +3

      I do recommend them, just not for multiple wind turbines. None of them as dead accurate in braking voltage settings so one will get the feedback from another turbine and toast itself. And none can actually handle these dang Wuixi turbines, you need a 400+ on a 300w turbine, especially in my area you may need a 500 capable. When this company Wuixi went to the AFL style magnet they became REAL producers. So its not smart to use the 300 that comes with a 300 turbine, get a 400 as a spare to put in when this little thing kills the 300 controller!!

    Also John, do I need to Install a diode in order to use the shunt? I installed the shunt just after the rectifier. The only reading I get from my digital meter is the systems battery voltage unless the wind generator exceeds the battery voltage then I pick up the additional voltage, I’m not reading any amps or wattage?

    • @JOHNDANIEL1
      @JOHNDANIEL1  Před 5 lety

      Your shunt main lugs should be between the Negative on the rectifier and battery. Your field wires should be as seen in my controller. Yellow/black unless you have a different color. The 2 red/black are to power the meter as well as show voltage and go only to battery. But it is possible you have a bad meter. I think It would be a good idea I do a video on 4 or 5 models since wiring differs on some to show correct millivolt alignment and where in stream to mount them. You gave me a good idea on them and even though others have done videos for things like car stereos or motors with amp meters, a basic all uses video needs to be there to help.

    • @JOHNDANIEL1
      @JOHNDANIEL1  Před 5 lety +1

      Looked it over, I suggest swapping the small wires around on the shunt. Try both ways using this method of meter testing. If you have a 6 to 15 amp battery charger clip its clamps on the output of the rectifier leaving everything still like it is, You do not need to disconnect the turbine or change anything. Plug in the charger, note the volts rise and then check your readings. Secondly your length of run from turbine to control board, how long is it, are you using 8awg in that length at least? Loss may be significant in that distance.
