First off I was blown away by your performance. This song is one of those that can really demonstrate just how well of a singer someone can be. You did it justice. Bravo! I can hear "O mio babbino caro" calling your name.
I'm grateful for the excellent memory I've been blessed with. Without it there definitely would be some lost treasures trapped within the cobwebs of my mind. With that said I'd like to give a little information about what was going on in my life when some of my song-memories were conceived.
I spent a few years in the Navy as an Aviation Electronic's Technician. I was based out of NAS (Naval Air Station) Oceana in Virginia Beach, Virginia. I also served on 3 aircraft carriers and got to travel a lot; I even got to meet Wayne Newton. He performed for us (in the ship's hangar bay) when we were in Cannes France. Wrong country to hear him sing Danke Schoen. Whenever and wherever I happened to be in the world I always had a Walkman cassette player with me as well as a selection of albums. I started this adventure in June of 1986. Some of the albums I had were from U2, Depeche Mode, Duran Duran, Midnight Oil, INXS, Men at Work, Phil Collins, The Bangles, The B-52's, The Go-Go's, R.E.M. The Little River Band, The Moody Blues, and ABBA. I still can't get that B to reverse itself on my tablet!
Chiquitita brings back a tremendously awesome memory that I'll always treasure. In mid December of 1987 we were in Palma de Mallorca, Spain. One evening I was strolling around town while listening to ABBA's greatest hits and enjoying the local ambience. Although it was raining and quite brisk I wasn't getting too annoyed. Walking past the street cafe's, mobile vendors, hearing the sounds of foreign dialect, and taking in the sweet aromas equated to an experience that all of my senses were thoroughly taking in. As It started to rain much heavier I decided to head towards a U.S.O. post. They are common to see in countries that U.S. military forces have NATO ties with. This one was incredibly nice. Exteriorly It blended in with the surrounding architecture and the inside was very inviting with warm soft lighting, wood-paneled walls, framed painted pictures, and plenty of living plants. Other than a contracted civilian worker I was surprised to see that there was nobody else inside. Trust me, I wasn't complaining because privacy (or anything remotely close to that) is something not found on a ship designed to accommodate thousands. As I sat in a very comfortable chair with a cup of fresh coffee, a movie was about to start. It was an old one that I had never heard about; The African Queen. Besides being a fantastic movie (one that I would watch many more times over the years) there was a lot more why I remember that particular rainy evening so well. It had to do with where I was, what I was doing with my life at the time, and just how grateful I was to have been given the opportunity to experience all of this at such a young age.
A few years later (1993) my father and I went to a boat show in downtown Detroit. On exhibit was the African Queen used in the movie. I was so excited to see it. You were allowed to get right up close to it. It was also then that I first told my father this story. As one of ABBA's songs dictate, I too reiterate "Thank You for the Music" 😊
