Tony Iommi receives near-universal recognition as the father of heavy metal. The Gibson Tony Iommi SG Special is a true-to-life re-creation of his prized “Monkey“ SG Special - the axe that produced the sinister proto-metal riffage on Black Sabbath‘s early albums. This solidbody electric guitar is built around a resonant mahogany body, with a rosewood-capped mahogany neck that‘s ultra-easy on your fingertips or lack thereof. Just like the guitar that inspired it, the Iommi SG Special comes loaded with chrome-covered P-90 pickups that deliver enough high-output, single-coil bite to drive you insane. Check it out!

Fairies wear boots!☠️☠️☠️🖖🏼
I'd play itsy bitsy spider.
I j literally just bought one day before his 75th birthday at Sweetwater, in Ft. Wayne, IN., and didn't realize it 'til the next day, that it was Tony's birthday...and It sounds amazing.! True synchronicity at it's finest. Thanks Sweetwater!
I just snagged one from Sweetwater yesterday! Haven't played it yet but I can't wait to wail on it!
perfect having a left handed player like Nick play and demo this guitar 🎸 made for the godfather of metal 🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼🎸🎶 being a lefty myself i really appreciate it and Tony was a big influence on me thank you 🙏🏼 Tony
When I think of Iommi I think of jazz and blues and of course hard rock. He is my favorite guitar player.
Those Sabbath tones are surprisingly spot on.
I'm a lefty too. It's great to see other leftys play. And Nick has nailed the Iommi tone here.
Great vid and demo of an iconic guitar. Love your approach Nick, so refreshing. Rock on man.
I just love the SG. Those horns are soooo awesome....🤘
Great video! Love any video with Nick...👍
Love Nick’s faithful riff renderings and panaché as he performs them. What a salesman. What a guitar player. What a comedian. ❤❤thanks Nick!
Great job Nick! Those P90’s sound great, and those were perfectly played examples 🤘
Nick. You make all guitars sound great, but that is a fantastic guitar.
I just bought one, great guitar. Love your playing. Rock On
Killer riffs man, thanks for the rundown
Can’t wait to hear Tony play this guitar
its sounds really good
Absolutely love Nick!🙏
Thanks Nick for taking the time to do these videos. Before you came along, Sweetwater did not really have a Metal specialist on board. I really enjoy the ones where Nick breaks down many of the classic metals songs. I would like to know if any pedals were used in this one. The Catalinbread Sabbra Cadabra possibly?
Love your videos, Metal Brother Nick. Should have told you in person when I walked by you at Sweetwater yesterday, but I gave the wave/salute instead. 🤟
I really enjoying watching this guy
Children of the sea! Tasteful choice for demoing the clean tone.
I have one of these, great guitars! If you don’t like big necks stay away, it’s veryyyy chunky.
Great intro that kicked ass
Fantastic! The guitar is quite good as well. I❤ Sweetwater.
Awesome. I've got one of these arriving tomorrow.
It's no accident the best writer for guitar is at the best music company
A beautiful guitar and sounds guitar
Sir, you can really rock! Superb playing here…..
Great guitar, very pleased with it! The neck is amazing. Got it in Lefty and changed the pots to left handed. .Kind of a downfall but that's how Gibson does it , right handed pots on all thier guitars . Still a great guitar and very versatile
Got mine and left handed. Also modded with Bare Knuckle pig P90s.
I want this guitar so bad
gotta one already
His epi signature is the one to go for
I want gibosn to do a copy of his black Johm Birch custom built SG. It's very different from any other SG as it's all maple . Maple body maple neck with an ebony board . The guitar currently resides at a hard rock Cafe in a glass case .
The best feature on this guitar is having the strap button on the horn, so it won't dive the headstock
Oh yes 🤘🤘🤘🤘.
I wish all sg strap pegs were there
History would not be the same had tony not made the switch with the right handed guitarist!!
oh yeshhh \m/
👍🏻
Any guitar $500 and more today are professional quality 2019 is when you actually saw the change
What was the song started playing at 0:46
I have a 2019 gretsch limited run 5627t p90. I do not see any demos on it.
I love that riff at 6:47. What is it?? Awesome video!
Paranoid Solo bit
I'm a drummer, can't play guitar worth a crap, spent nearly 2 years in the early 80s trying to learn guitar on a slightly used 1974 Gibson Les Paul which immediately got a body upgrade with a 1978 replacement with a sweet cherry burst/wave design. Anywho, if I could play guitar I would want a Monkey SG replica, right handed, actually I want one anyway.
Nice guitar, and great demo. But the question is...does the G string stay in tune?
You RuLe, Nick !
Where’s my fellow lefties at 🤘🤘. Finally , a nice one for us . .
What song is that he is playing at 0:45?
Im getting this, a Laney and cutting off my finger tips so I can get the REAL sound.....
Somebody recognize the riff from 0:45 ?its sound like sabbath but I am not quite sure
What could be a good amp to play this guitar, thanks!
Hi, Francesca! Thanks for your question. Unfortunately I don’t have any information to help me make a decision for you. I don’t know what style of music you like, what size of amp you want or artist sounds you are inspired by. Reality is any amp will sound good, we really need to know what you want out of the pairing of the amp and guitar.

Excellent video from a fellow lefty. Love that SG. Maybe I need to cut the tips off of my fingers to play like Tony.
I work with metal cutting equipment everyday and sometimes I wonder if maybe I’ll have the same origin story as tony
Nick doesn't half sound like Chris Tarrant 😁
In Iommi we trust ☠️☠️☠️🤘🏼
Which songs are the two opening riffs? Or are they Nick's creations
Did you ever find out what those two opening riffs were? I'm trying to figure that out myself.
@@jeffcornelison888 unfortunately, don't know
I want one of these. Is this guitar true or false bypass? Asking for a friend
False for sure
wheres the right handed one he used to play?
that would be a find.
This is such a faithful recreation that this guitar is also darned expensive.
Same thinking.
Hey it is nick bowcott.
🤘
Anyone know the song at 5 min? I recognize it but can’t place it.
Children of the sea
how many credit cards do i need to buy it?
The original had a p90 in the bridge and a p90 sized humbucker in the neck
Is he left handed? I mean Nick, not Iommi
SG’s always look odd to me due to all the body behind the bridge. Best Regards
I still don't understand why they did not include all the features his jaydee's have, 24 frets, the jack on the side instead of the top.
Because it is not a Jaydee Custom Iommi SG... It is a replica of his Gibson SG monkey...
Jaydee guitars have nothing to do with Gibson. He is a luthier in England.
One needs an Epiphone version because I can't afford Gibson and not very careful with guitars, I would snap the headstock in a few months. I wouldn't really care with an Epi.
With modern cnc machines there's no reason why the Gibson USA models do not share the same carved bevels as they are on the 60s originals and custom shops. I sold 2 new SG standards to get an original 61 les paul sg jr and ill never buy a new Gibson USA sg again. They charge 20 grand for the custom shop version of this USA version because? It's actually a close replica? Rich collectors are keeping this craziness goin
You owe it to yourself to get an I-Owe-Me.
Clap clap
Right handed guy with left hand SG doesn’t make any sense LOL did he inherit the guitar or something ?
Love you Nick, you rock me to hell, but you should ease up on the air quotes.
Oddly enough Tony didn’t use p90s he used A hot wound Hum-bucker
This is a tribute to the original monkey guitar he played that did indeed have p90s.
LOL, yeah, cant help jamming sabbath riffs. Iommi played all the good riffs. IMO iommi started doom not heavy metal. blues based dark riffs. later sabbath became more metal. same with judas priest. they were hard rock at the beginning and evolved into metal. i also see that the "signature model" thing is really hot with guitar mfrs these days. I would too. add $1-2k just to swap pickups and neck profile and get the fans to throw the money on their hero's sig. the jiva may be almost the exception, but even that is a bit too high, but not stupid high
Not heavy metal ? Well, if you don't think he did during the Ozzy era, he certainly did during the Dio era, a year or two before the new wave during the 80ties.
@@MrShadowofthewind i think sabbath went more metal over time. i refer to the first sabbath which was slow blues based riffing. after ozzie yes they went metal
lefties unite!
I love seeing so many fellow lefty guitarists in one comment section!
No cross inlays? Deal breaker.......
Yeah. The original Toni used didn’t have cross inlays.
@@Noumenon4Idolatry I still want them on my Sabbath guitar for the money..
@@kattycat3502
Those already exist. Not sure if they make them now. I see used ones all the time.
I still dont get these signature guitars but whatever...
Looks same as an SG standard to me which will be a few $1000 cheaper. And next time you promo a guitar please run it thru a good tube amp and not an el cheapo Katana. Did gibson no favours there :)
I keep telling myself that I already have an SG Special, but this guitar…I need it.
Comes with free tissues!
@@clownpocket :), don't give in, keep fightin' the urge!
Too much neck dive in the SG.
Hard pass at that price, typical for Gibson
Buy the Tony Baloney version from Harley Benton.
@@TheLostSquadron a better price and an unbroken headstock. My lord
I'll pass on Gibson and give me Epiphone all day long..
It's not a 'stunning recreation'. You can't mass produce the custom wound pickups of the original, which along with Tony's fingers, a customised Rangemaster into a Laney Supergroup are the major part of the sound. My B-stock SG Junior with overwound P90 and Catalinbread Sabbra Cadabra pedal sounds way closer to the original than this overpriced guff - for a quarter of the price. I'm also a lefty, so fair play for creating a lefty version for the same price, even if it is a rip off.
