    Daniel, thanks to you I have a very questionable obsession... I live in one of the driest countries in the world. Namibia! We do have a very long coastline, 1570km of it, but due to nutrient rich benquela current and upwellings, we have terrible vis but amazing Silver cob (mulloway) populations. Vis is usually less than a meter, with very unpredictable water clearings of maby 14 days per year somewhere during our summer.
    Perhaps not a speros dream location, Yet I own 3 spearguns and have only harvested 3 fish in our waters. The love lives on and your videos fuel the obsession. Thank you for exceptional content and extremely well put together videos.

    Lovely video, thanks. Not sure if I am doing it wrong, but thanks to your videos I rigged my own for the first time.
    I did it the way you described, and I tried leaving out the muzzle bungie like you suggested this time.
    One thing I really found hard is, making a piece of Dyneema to the right length that connects from the muzzle to the pigtail clip.
    It was super fiddly for me, probably because I did it wrong.
    What I did:
    - Take the mono, crimp it to the spear
    - Trace the mono along the spear, out of the muzzle, along the guide, back down the gun to the line release and then back to the nozzle, single wrap.
    - Crimp a loop into the mono at the muzzle.
    Now I am left with: An eye at the muzzle, a loop in the mono, a pigtail clip and a length of dyneema.
    And that length of Dyneema needs to be at the perfect length after knotting, so the shooting line has tension without using a bungie. I tried using the fisherman's knot for that, but it was a pain in the ass to adjust.
    How do you do that? Different knot?

I haven’t found very good info on how the entire process works from beginning to end. I know there is a lot of different gear, and a lot of ways to do things, but could you do a video, or a couple, showing your process beginning to end? • @austinallen1108
    @austinallen1108 Před 2 lety

    I use this video way more than I'd like, but it's one of the only ones that is easy and straight to the point with good knots. I'm 4 years late, but do you think it would be alright to just use the reel line as the shooting line? I bought 120 mvd open as my 'big gun', and it came rigged with mono shooting line and either polyester or dyneema reel line and the mono is already scratched up and brittle from practicing loading. Is it normal/safe to just use a bowline knot and use the reel line as shooting line and make it a single knot system?

    • @DanielMann
      @DanielMann  Před 2 lety

      Yes you can totally do that Austin. However I use mono instead because if you damage the reel line you have to replace it and then after some years it ends up being a lot shorter than expected.

    • @austinallen1108
      @austinallen1108 Před 2 lety

      @@DanielMann Thanks a lot for the reply! I figured that shooting fish and getting the line wrapped in rocks would require cutting it shorter. The line on my reel isn't what I'd like to keep on it for the long run, so cutting it down will make me replace it with something better sooner than later, but I'll definitely keep mono on there once I get some fresh reel line, happy hunting.

    • @DanielMann
      @DanielMann  Před 6 lety +1

      A long range speargun isn’t the best way to target wary fish most often. Improving your hunting technique is the best way to get closer to fish in my opinion. The best divers I know rarely use anything other than a double band 120cm gun with a single wrap of mono. I have occasionally used a 115cm double roller from seawolf (epic gun) but not necessary or practical for most of my diving.

Do both the bands wishbones go on the same sharks fin when its loaded? The two shark fins are 120mm apart and if they go on different sharks fins, won't the bands have different tension?

    • @DanielMann
      @DanielMann  Před 6 lety +1

      If they are cord wishbones no problem on going on the same fin however they may not lay as flat and streamlined against the body of the speargun. I tend to load both rubbers on the same shark fin right at the back of the gun when using double rubbers, if the shark fin is big enough.

      I’ve always shore dived around the sunny coast with a 1.2m speargun. I saw Adreno have some rob allen sparid’s on sale which are a good gun. Will be a good size if you end up going offshore on a boat, which there are loads of good spots on the Sunshine Coast you need a boat to get to.
      If you don’t ever want to go offshore a 1.1m is also a good option for shore diving and then it’s possible to get a 1.3m for offshore stuff later down the track.

      I never practise in the pool, I saw deaths occur in the community in Australia doing freediving in pools alone so have no interest in it myself sorry.

      Yeah, alone in the pool is not the best idea. Cool gun You have there, looks slim and firm, would be a nice body to build a decent roller out of it. You should come visit us on Adriatic sea and catch a nice Dentex next time!

    I love that double opposing noose. That's a cool one. I use bowline to tie my reel line to the shaft directly (just trialing using no mono for a bit). The best knot I have found for mono to reel line is this quick release knot. Worth a look. ultimatespearfishing.com/clientdata/10136/uploads/back%20to%20basic/step_4_1.jpg not my pic, but it's a good one.

      Certainly a good knot for connecting clips to guns and floats.
      I don’t really like using reel line onto the spear directly as it tends to catch on the reef more than mono I find, droops and sags. Also if you trash the bit near your spear often you’ll be cutting it off and then over time shortening your reel line. Far cheaper to replace mono than to replace the whole reel line. Just some food for thought.

      No I agree with you 100%. I have notice some chaffing already and i'm thinking the mono is ore my cup of tea. I was having some issues with a new mech, so I'm going to try your little loop for the end of the mono. Cheers for that. Very helpful video for me. Looking forward to your next videos. The starting spearfishing from nothing is good. I can pass that onto friends. I of course froth hunting techniques, so if you want some ideas, maybe full hunting scenes for certain species or locations, from breath up to disposing of the fish would be great.
