Are you kidding?! Tying that knot ,I can blame it!
Tyler, this was a cool test! I tie the Alberto knot so I definitely feel better about it. Thanks for sharing!
Alberto did pretty well
You have successfully proven what I, and many other anglers have known for a while. The FG is the best knot. Hands down, without a doubt, absolute stone-cold best. And, it's also the thinnest knot so it passes through the guides better too. Pain in the ass to learn, to be sure, but it's the best one. 👍🇺🇸
Totally agree nothing else even close
Man, now I know I'm old. Pretty sure the FG wasn't even invented when I started using braid. And I was a hold out on braid, lol!
Actually it’s been beaten
@@trumpking4874 and?
For me it’s how long it lasts and how it goes thru your guides like it’s not even there, and the strength is incredible
This is the kind of hard-hitting journalism I subscribe to this channel for!
In all seriousness, I started fishing again last year and I've been debating if I want to start using a leader. If I do, I think I'll learn to tie the FG knot. Great video!
I really appreciate you doing this video!! I have always tied the FG knot on everything. This proves I’m doing the right one. Thanks a ton for sharing your findings!! Keep up the great work!
Wow! Great stuff and proof for any angler to use. Haven't gone braid yet or even trying to use a braid to mono/fluro leader. Results were very interesting. Loved the other videos youve done testing various types of lines and the knotts most if us use. Thank you for your time making these.
Excellent video. As a wildlife biologist I really enjoyed the solid science here. I tie the FG KNOT on all my larger diameter saltwater setups but it looks like I’ll be doing it all the time now!
Enjoyed the video, and it’s a great addition to the other knot and line strength videos you’ve done. I have used all three of these knots in the past, but I’ve been using the Alberto exclusively for about the last year and will continue to do so, here’s why. It’s way stronger than the double uni, and way easier to tie than the FG knot. I don’t see the alberto knot breaking at a lower percentage of line strength than the FG knot as a big problem and here’s why. All the Alberto knots broke north of 90%. In your fluoro to bait knot test, your own data showed that the best of the seven knots tested got just over 88%. It would seem that’s the weak link. That’s just my take on it. Keep up the great content.
Also, what people need to realize aplication matters, diaamitar, and the situation you are tieing in. If you are on a boat needing to tie fast in a pinch. What is easy for you. If you using 50 lb braid to 60lb mono like I do for deep see, you not tieing that by hand easy. I can but that x8 braid will cut your hand up. I tie P.E. for that to junk big baits for bigger fish., jigging, and any heavy application. On my light rig, I will use Alberto knots, or FG they don't very much in streng in real world application.
True that... sure more of a pain in the butt... but the confidence when you have to pull hard on a fish with light line is just next level. I prefer the PR knot when I have time to work with the bobbin... but the FG is failsafe...
You fail to mention the primary advantage of the FG(particularly for bass fishing and lighter tackle fishing), its insanely thin. No weakening/abrasion of the knot, no damaging guides, and farther and better casts. Its almost impossible to do a good short range pinpoint cast with a light lure if you arent using an FG as your leader connection. Its also alot easier to tie than you think if you use the tensioned method, once you get it down its just wrapping the line around then a few half hitches.
With the pinky method you can literally tie an FG knot in 60 seconds in strong wind.
Thanks Tyler! I love the FG and this backs up my findings. I appreciate these videos.
Excellent video. Safety glasses were a nice addition.
Great video! Your knot test videos are always excellent.
Tyler, love the channels and all of the great content. Continued success!!!
The key is a good reel with a smooth drag. So you do not have to find the breaking point. A couple of summers ago on my 7’ med/fast, moderate action finesse setup 10lb braid
to 8lb floro, hooked and landed a 38” Striper while bass fishing. Connection knot was an old school blood knot. First one my pop taught me
That's what I love about your channel the different things you're showing us. Looks like I'm learning how to tie the FG knot.
I try to be different when I can. Sometimes it’s hard on CZcams
@@BassFishingHQ great stuff man.
Always nice to learn something new, however, if your current knot is reliable for you switching to something different just might not be worth it. The learning curve on getting a reliable FG knot is pretty steep and it's one of those knot that if it isn't tied right, will just fall apart. Once you've got it right, it's stronger than the line, but you can't get it wrong.
@@helotaxi if you do any type of tournaments learn the fg
Perfect timing, I just decided to become a flouro backing, to braid, to flouro leader user yesterday, and I picked the double uni knot. It seems quite effective. Interested in how this video goes!
Hello, when I started using braided line, I started to see several knots to tie the leader and among all the fishermen they always gave me a different one, but one day a good friend He told me to use the fg knot, I can assure you that the leader is finished first before it bursts, from then on it is the only knot I use for that, and I am already very skilled at doing it.
Greetings from Durango Mexico
Super cool test Tyler! Thanks for your time, and the comedy was the icing on the cake 😂
Great knot strength test concept
Thank you for doing this,i really appreciate this type of thing
As always it waas great to see you at the expo this year and chat throughout the day. FG knot is all i use these days, i am glad you proved out my experiances. Also give me a holler when your ready to come out on a kayak!
Your results are exactly what I thought they would be. I use the Alberto for most all of my bass fishing when tying similar line diameters together and I have had pretty much zero knot failures. I only tie the FG knot for all of my heavy fluoro leaders when I'm Pike fishing. Both have served me well. It would have been nice to test some of the other knots out there to compare to. Like the GT knot some guys swear by and the Albright a lot of guys still tie. Even a blood knot, I know guys that swear that is the strongest knot you can tie, Knot that I believe that LOL
I can’t tie a FG, the Alberto has never failed me. It’s very strong. I just make sure I tie the braided end a few times extra
@@camarojeff9786???
It was nice to meet you on Sunday. I hope you have a great fishing season!
really like your test. very well done and systematic. Can't get more scientific than this!
Fantastic test video! I’d like to see the blood knot as a comparison as well. That’s the braid to leader knot I tie and most fly fisherman use it for their tapered leaders as well.
These videos are great. I love you use the scientific method to address questions in fishing. The alberto knot is good enough for how easy it is
Excellent video! I’ve always used the Alberto knot, and until I can tie the fg knot without watching a video, I can be confident it won’t break.
I was excited about this video, excellent job! Can you do one on how you tie your FG, I have had very little success in trying to tie mine, it always slips. I always go with Alberto, although even after this video I still have a lot of confidence in the Alberto. Thanks!
I use the FG Knot. I really appreciate the time and effort you put into these line and knot test.
Good informative video… For those that didn't know… to learn and tying these knots is the earning curve for everyone 👍
I love your channel man. You put in a lot of time and effort on this channel and I along with everyone else greatly appreciates it.
Great video. Would like to see test on the SC knot.
Something I saw on a small scale somewhere was a test on fluorocarbon RE-stretch. That video showed how much better mono was on second and third pulls NEAR TO breakage strength vs fluoro which tended to maintain very little strength by the second pull. It would be interesting to see a more comprehensive study-especially since you already know the best lines and knots. Just goes to show the importance of fresh fluorocarbon and fresher knots. (Especially for those folks that love to use a crankbait clip all day and never retie! 😅)
Great seeing you briefly on Sunday!
How can anyone KNOT like this test? Fun to watch. Tyler becomes the science guy again. Good video.
Great stuff, this was a well done experiment!
Another EPIC video! Thanks for the work done here. May have to learn the FG knot better and leave the Alberto behind.
That knot is just on another level! It refuses to break. Interesting to see just how consistent the results are- across all 3 tiers, between all 3 contenders.
Awesome video, thanks!
Well done T. I appreciate you taking the time and using the appropriate equipment when doing these comparisons. I've tried countless times practicing tying the FG knowing it's superior but Sadly, as a casual & elderly angler, I lack the dexterity & skill to master it.
Thanks for watching!
That was some great tips
Excellent test. Love these
Thanks for watching
I love this kind of stuff. Data and knots. I use the Alberto on the boat or in the kayak and at home tie the FG. I have not had a break off on the Alberto in a long time and like the knot, but feel the FG is thinner so it has a benefit. Good to see the results. I'd be interested in an expanded test or even do some where other people tie the knots. I would also be curious to see a longer line test to imitate more of a real life situation where there is usually more line out.
Very interesting video. Thank you very much !
Love the Alberto knot. I might try to learn the fg knot eventually. Was wondering what flipping hooks you use.
Good content. Years ago I was using uni/uni and kept breaking the floro while casting right at the knot. I switched to the fg and haven’t had an issue since.
Excellent content. Thank you!
Already have decided to tying the FG before watching this video from now on. I use 15 pound braid to 15 pound Flouro. Just started using braid to Flouro leader last year, and been using the double uni. Haven't had issues with it breaking, but looking for something to go through the guides better. Thanks for the info! 🤙
Tyler, I love your channel and really love your technical approach to test. That being said, since I’ve literally never had my uni to uni knot break and cost me a bass I have no plans to switch. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. The knot is easy to tie and simply works for me and 8 only use it on my spinning rods for wacky rig and core tackle fluke rig. Everything else is straight braid or straight fluoro so line to line knots are not a player …keep up the great work
When your line breaks away from the knot, you aren't testing the knot anymore, you are testing the manufacturing of the fluorocarbon line. All 3 of your tests showed the line was made to withstand the specified weight it was rated for. The FG knot exceeds the line tensile strength for a long time with braid. The SC knot is twice as easy to tie with same or more strength.
Love these videos, keep them coming
The IGFA tested over 50 knots and found the GT knot to be the strongest knot. It beat 6 variations of the FG knot. I've been using it for 4 years now and have not had a single break at the knot.
So the gt knot they used in that test failed miserably with light line as compared to the fg. It's strength is in heavy lines 80lb braid and 50lb mono minimum. The gt knot you see all over youtube is not what they used and is much weeker than an fg. A true gt knot is a pain in the ass, uses a double braided line and multiple twists around the leader.
Been waiting for this one Tyler. I tie the FG at home and the Alberto on the water. FG IS AMAZING!! I had a couple of instances when working twitch type baits where I believe my FG knot unraveled. Most likely my fault when tying. Going to increase wraps to 22 from 17. Thanks for taking the time to do all this testing!!
Thanks for doing this test.
Double uni for life, i landed 6-7 foots wels catfish on 20 pounds 0,40 mm fluorocarbon and i've never lost a fish using it. I land 2-3 pounds fish on the 0,16 mm fluorocarbon without a single problem. The only problem it's that you can't use it with lines that thicker than 0,50 mm, but if i need more than that, i will buy a leader 1-1,5 foot long with a swivel and use uni knot. FG knot it's good when fishing at the sea side.
Hey Tyler next time you are doing testing, I really think you should wear a white Lab coat. You could pull it off. Love the knot testing series. I have been using the FG knot for the last several years. It is a good knot.
Pretty convincing. I am switching to FG knot. TY. Great videos.
Snapped off this past weekend on a double uni knot, and have been using this for several years, and this was my first time to have a know break
This is why I only use the FG. Great video Tyler and thank you for verifying that I am on the right path ;)
You have to add the GT knot on the mix. Great video!
I think you should have shown us how you are tieing these knots !
Great knot videos, can you do different drop shot knots next?
Awesome video!!
Would to see the San Diego jam, and Blood knot in there
I'd love to see the breaking points of each of the lines you used.
GREAT test overall!
Was looking forward to this video! Can you link or do a video on how you tie your FG knot?
I’ll have to make one specifically for it and I’ll link it then
@mesa620 that’s a good video. Looks like that’s how Tyler might do it, the way he mentions using the gloves.
The FG was my go to, though I may have to try 5 times to get it right. Then, I saw the PR knot. I bought a bobbin on line and have tied a few leaders. Not as easy as some make it look, but when I finally got it, it’s thin, goes through guides amazingly well, and lays on a spinning reel spool so much better. Oh, and they say it’s got better strength than the FG, and I’ve seen one test that backed that up.
Love that you tie the fg the same way I do and it is still so strong. No need to use your teeth to get that strength.
I switched to FG from Uni to Uni last year. The difference was stunning. Goes through the guides smoother and noticeably stronger. Also, I felt like I would mess-up the uni-to-uni sometimes and not know it until it broke off really easily. The FG is a hard knot to learn, but once you knot it its not bad to tie, and it will be obvious if you do it wrong.
I always tie a blood knot. Never ever had a failure and is easy to visually look at to make sure it's tied correctly
Thank you for the testing Sir 👊 No real surprises, the FG stands for Freaking Good knot 😝 They are such a pain to tie but well worth the efforts 😎
I’ve struggled to learn to tie the fg knot, but then I bought the FG KNOT ASSIST 2.0 tool, I keep it in my pack and the fg knot is all I use, I can’t scream enough about this tool it’s cheap and a lifesaver
Cool test, Alberto and FG is all I use.
Lucky enough to have learned the FG first and have never used the others. Zero issues.
I wonder if the Tackle Advisors Alberto knot modification makes any difference in strength. That is the way I tie it and love it.
@bassfishinghq i’d love to see you do a follow up video to this and test the knots after 20 or 30 casts. The reason I say this is I’ve found that I was getting weird damage to my leader while using an FG knot.
FG rules. It was intimidating to learn but now it's easy, love it.
I tried to use to double uni, but the knot would end up rubbing eyelets on the cast, switched to I believe the "blood knot", and I've been happy there
Fantastic video!!! I tried the FG but gave up. Been using the Alberto due to having issues with the double uni using really thin braid line. Got snagged the other day with the Alberto and I had one hell of a time snapping the line. Pretty much the same when i get snagged with the double uni. I figure with that and using my drag properly and a net I won't ever have issues but I may try again on the FG. It looks thinner and like it would go through the guides smoother
Been tying the FG for years and it just can't be beat!
I use the German knotless wire connector called "verbindung knotless" for braid to fluoro, reports says that is 90% strong with the advantage of not need to tie a knot, only disadvantage is that the wire cannot go in most the guides. Regarding your experiment, the key to FG knot is the user expertise on tying the knot, which requires sometime. The other thing on FG is that it only works on diameters where fluoro or mono are bigger than the braid, in my experience. Nonetheless great video!
This is an interesting test and video. I pretty much only use the uni to uni knot and I've never had one break at the knot on me. I use 10lb mainline braid to 15-20lb fluoro fishing saltwater inshore for Reds, Speckled Trout, and the occasional Black Drum.
First of all, happy to see you’re wearing safety glasses this time!!
When I first started fishing, I used the double uni, but soon graduated to the Alberto. To be honest, I’m perfectly happy with 90%+ knot strength. The FG is just too much of a pain in the butt to tie, IMO.
I’ll continue to use Alberto.
Thanks for doing this test!!!
I liked the video been watching more of them. I'm wondering what knot you use for 8# or less leader line
Awesome job, as always! Can you maybe try the same test but use a GT knot? I feel the GT is stronger and certainly easier to tie than a FG knot. I'd love to see the results. Pretty please 🙂
Great content and solid facts! Thank you!! I would like to see you compare the Carrot knot to the FG knot. The Carrot knot looks like it would be better but looks can be deceiving.
I switched to the FG 3 years ago. I can consistently get a good clinch with 8 or 10 lb braid to a 15-lb. fluoro leader. Sometimes it's hard for me to get a good clinch to 10 lb., especially an ultra-thin brand like Seagaur Gold and I'll tie an Alberto. I'll also tie an Alberto or Uni-to-Uni for speed when I'm on the water. That said, I noticed two things when I snagged the bottom (smallie fishing in a rocky river). The FG knot always held and the uni knot to the jig broke. With the Alberto, the Alberto always failed, not the uni.
I'm tempted to try a hollow core mainline one of these days for my heavier braid applications. Add in a served splice for a leader and it's 1005 strength with no knot. The other option would be to splice a loop in the end of the hollow core and have several wind-ons premade in case you need to swap a leader on the water. Again, super quick, full strength and no real knot.
I am astonished with the results for the double uni (grinner) knot. I have never had any trouble using that knot in mono. tying shock leaders.
Im an alberto fan myself...still working on learning the fg
No braid for me, but I’m still watching!!!
I see no point of using braid .I hooked a log and try to brake 18 lb sun line and could not brake it with my hands no braid needed
With the light lines , your drag should be slipping without that much pressure on the knots. I’ve never had an issue with the double uni.
Then again, I don’t catch too many really big bass.
5 lbs is rare in my parts.
The Fg knot is definitely the strongest out of the bunch. But, the most convenient knot to tie seems to be the Alberto knot. It is super quick and easy to tie with only a 10% loss in strength. Overall, the best setup is probably tying an FG knot before getting out to the water, then tying an Alberto knot if you happen to need to re-tie your leader knot.
Check out the 6 turn Surgeon's knot. It's a sleeper in terms of knot performance and extremely easy to tie.
Tyler
Would be curious to see how the Dodd knot holds up to the FG. This is the main connection not that I’ve always used in Barry. Dodd taught it to me himself. He has a CZcams video out showing how to tie it. I’ve always enjoyed your videos. Keep up the good work.
FG FTW! Wow. That was very interesting.
I use the Alberto knot, and then tie the end of the braid so it won’t fray. It still flys through the guides. It’s my favorite knot
Getting into braid and lead glad to knot have bad habits or bias to knots I already know. FG will be the one I learn and stick with right off the bat ❤
How many wraps with each line on the double uni knot?
Hi Tyler, in case u didnt know. Some japanese brands have tools for tying the FG knot. Something like the Daiichiseiko Knot Assist 2.0 made my life soo much esier.
Can you test flouro knots against shock like from the hookset there are certain knots and certain flouros that struggle on the hookset even tho they are abrasion resistant or high weight breaking strength.
I have seen tests where the FG was not tied properly and broke in the middle of the pack. You have clearly tied those FGs properly! Awesome.
Tyler, IGFA tested braid to leader knots with their fancy test machine.
The GT Knot was 100%. Super easy to tie. The second place knot was the bobbin knot. I am never going to carry a bobbin to tie knots.
Have you tried the 6 turn Surgeon's knot? It's probably the best in terms of strength vs complexity, almost as strong as the FG, but faster & easier to tie (especially since you don't need tension on the braid when tying for full strength). Only downside its it is thicker than an FG, so if you're worried about effect on casting, the low profile FG is better.
