  • Skyrim is a game rich in places for the Dragonborn to visit. There are thousands of places to explore in The Elder Scrolls 5 and each boasts it’s own background, narratives and lore. While Skyrim is a land of many bustling cities and beautiful forts, the region is also home to innumerable spooky caves, ancient dungeons and lairs that can feel very uneasy at times. Skyrim’s not a game known for its ability to terrify players but that doesn’t mean it can’t. So today we’ll be taking a look at five more of the creepiest locations in The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim.

The creepiest location is definitely the cloud district located in the upper streets of whiterun. It's an unknown and mysterious place most players don't get to often. Stories say a terrible creature arrogantly roams the land attacking any commoner with hurtful insults of entitlement.

I thought they got tired of his grilled leeks and killed him, but the way you presented this alludes that they must have discovered what he was feeding them. His dead body can be found in one of the cages, covered in grilled leeks.

It's a tragedy that starts out small with a couple of hunters and then balloons into a bunch of refugees only wanting to escape the Red Mountain and survive, only to fall victim to Falmer. It's one of the best stories of Skyrim you can come across. What was not pointed out is this is the end point for the Barenziah Stones quest, where you go to find Barenziah's Crown. So after collecting all of those stones, you are then subjected to one of the saddest events of Skyrim and Morrowind that nobody else knows. I would've loved to have been able to tell Vex what I found there, and take her attitude down a notch.

The thing he was raising from the dead was actually chickens though. The center of his necromancy ritual was a chickens nest on a small make shift alter. There are 3 eggs in the nest. Grabbing an egg will spawn an undead chicken. This area is in the rift if i recall. I took pictures of the nest and the location on the map if you're interested in checking it out.

I'm pretty sure Faldar's Tooth is a possible location of a Companions' Quest where you have to steal some Silver Hand plans. Considering the companions are Werewolves, this adds to the aura of spookiness surrounding the place, and begs the question, how did the Bandits of the fort, get the plans? Are the Silver Hand secretly supplying the bandits with wolves and dogs in exchange for their help against the werewolves? Did the Bandits manage to capture a werewolf and use it in the dog-fighting ring. There's just this atmosphere about it that is extra spooky if you happen to be a werewolf member of the Companions.

Tovald's cave is a nightmare with a darker dungeon mod installed.
Literally you can't see where to go without a torch equipped and even then it's easy to miss the right turns in the cave system in the darkness. Spent an hour once in there even after eerything in a large room was dead trying to find my way out.
And the spider cave always seems to be either where the Forgemaster's Fingers, the Queen's Sword, or the Ancestoral Shield is located for me.
Though I always wait to have Inigo with me before exploring that cave as he loves killing everything in there and runs ahead every time even when set to be less aggressive.

Faldar's tooth was once a fortress protecting the roads between Ivarstead and Riften, bandits took over after the guards and military were weakened enough by the war against the Thalmor, the bandits could be generic bandits or members of the silver hand faction depending on if your given a task going to there by an elite Companions member. Tolvalds cave was a trade route turned escape route turned falmer cave dungeon, its an area you'll be sent to at the end of "no stones unturned" bonus Thieves guild quest, after securing the 24 stones of Barenziah.

Cronvangr cave does have a quest, sort of. If you have the "Pets of Skyrim", the tamed spider pet is found in that cave. Also, if you accept one of Alea the Huntres' quest to fight beasts, this is a potential location she sends you, stating that the spiders are the problem that needed to be dealt with. It still gives any arachnophobe nightmares, especially if this is a location a quest ends up sending you too. It's probably the only cave that has the most amount of spiders since the entire cave (aside from the vampire section) that is exclusive spiders.

I literally came upon Cronvangr cave by chance. I had done the Skyrim storyline, had done all of the guild storylines, had completed the expansions, pretty much everything. All I really had left to do was to explore every inch of Skyrim, so I began by going to the first place I that would pop up on my compass, after clearing out a couple of caves, THIS was the third one I found. I went in, cleared out the spiders, commenting about how much I hated spiders, and was about to leave when I spotted that button on the wall. I only even spotted it by the command prompt popping up as I was leaving. Finding the secret underground house of Vampires certainly caught me off guard to say the least.

The quest itself ended up being completely by killing the spiders and didn't have anything to do with the vampires, but it still made me wonder (I also wondered whether the vampires took up residence in the chamber to avoid suspicion since most people would see the spider evidence and say "nope, absolutely not!"
