  • Skyrim is a game with a vast array of diverse characters for the Dragonborn to cross paths with, however not every NPC we meet in The Elder Scrolls 5 is the most honest type. Some of Skyrim’s most interesting personalities are indeed keeping some very dark and often times evil secrets from the player and those close to them. So today I figured why not expose some of these fellows for what they truly are and explore five secretly devious characters and their evil secrets in The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim.

Also the letter said after inquiries have been made, leading me to believe that Olfrid was trying to find Thorold as well and was told to be quiet. 8:01 sad thing is Olfrids Son still cares about his former friend and if your persuasion is high enough he'll reveal hes been exhausting his resources with the Empire to find his former friend to potentially save him, and discovered what happened to Thorald but wouldn't dare move against the Thalmor. Its one of the alternate ways to learn of his fate.
    Makes the GrayMane-Battleborn feud much more tragic and Olfrid that much more despicable.

  • @Supermutant6112
    @Supermutant6112 Před 5 lety +75

    I honestly saw Olfrid in a different light than what you said. I think it was a bit less black and white than "he knew about Thorald and lied."
    Why would Tullius send a message to Olfrid directly? Olfrid was probably the one who inquired about Thorald's location; after all, the families were friends for generations, and the feud can't destroy their history.
    If Olfrid got word that Thorald was imprisoned by the Empire, he could use his political sway to ensure his safety. During the feud, he could hold it over the Grey-Mane's heads that he's the only thing keeping their son from the chopping block. After the feud/war ended, his safe return could bring their families closer together. Or, if he wanted to end the feud during the war, he could've bought Thorald's freedom. (Or he could order his execution, I can't prove otherwise.)
    But, Thorald wasn't held by the Empire; he was held by the Thalmor. Olfrid would have no say in what they do to him, and he would likely be tortured and killed instead of freed. If he told the Grey-Manes, their response would likely be the same as in the actual quest; storm the Thalmor prison, free Thorald, and flee into the Stormcloaks. Without the Dragonborn, however, this would've likely been a one sided slaughter. The Thalmor would certainly retaliate by killing the Grey-Manes for treason. Then, they would find out about Olfrid's inquiries, and house Battle-Born would also be killed off for treason. So, instead of killing off both families, Olfrid just opted to lie and hope they come to terms with Thorald's death.
    TL;DR: Olfrid can't pay off the Thalmor, and telling the Grey-Manes about Thorald's imprisonment would eventually get both families killed by the Thalmor.

      @argentum909 Před rokem +3

      @sabergreen2010 Eh, with this context, the mocking very well could have been his attempt at getting Fralia to drop it. It's an impossible situation from Olfrid's pov. He posed a query about the son of a family friend hoping to influence the empire into releasing him. Learning that the captors are actually the Thalmor, there is now nothing to be done by either family. He could tell the Greymanes what happened but they'd end up storming the fort and likely perish. It's a very Machiavellian tactic pulled by Olfrid in which he sees as the ends justifying the means. Ends: Greymane family mostly stays safe in Whiterun. Means: One of their sons dies at the hand of the Thalmor.

    In Anuriel's defense, Laila Law-Giver is horrendously incompetent as Jarl. Only Elisif is less suited for the job. Yeah, even Siddgir is better than her. Maven basically rules the city in everything but name, until the Empire reclaims Riften, which gives her the perfect opportunity to take the spot without usurping the position and risking retribution.
    Say what you want about Maven, she's damn good at what she does.

    • @LAZERAK47V2
      @LAZERAK47V2 Před 5 lety +26

      @@recklessabandon5678 Elisif is Queen/Jarl through marriage, she was not appointed as a High King/Queen usually is and she was not raised in the Jarl's household, marrying into her position, which means her political savvy is next to zilch. I'm not saying she's an idiot, just incompetent, as anyone who is untrained would be and she, herself, recognizes this. This is the reason she wholeheartedly supports Tullius (She may hate Ulfrik, but she doesn't have to be Tullius's Yes-man in the process). If she did not support Tullius and the Empire thusly, she would be removed, as her inexperience would be detrimental to Solitude, so she submits to their authority, allowing the Empire to control the region through a proxy ruler, thus keeping her position. The reason I brought up Elisif was to highlight just how much of a terrible Jarl Laila is. She doesn't have the same excuses, being completely blind and easily manipulated, deluding herself that she's untouchable as Jarl.

      The comparison to Elisif is a good one too. It's always seemed to me, Elisif does whatever she's told, while Laila believes whatever she's told. I mean, she doesn't even question Anuriel. She's quite literally making it too easy.

Now I gotta meet up with Delphine at Kynesgrove, but I’m really kinda busy doing stuff for some factions. Thieves. Dark Brotherhood. Imperials. Fetching things for NPS to get in their will. One of my favourite parts about the Thorald mission is how one of the other options involves Olfrid's son, Idolaf, instead telling you what happened and giving you a missive after apparently looking into the matter himself due to his old friendship with Thorald. This implies that Olfrid has been going behind everyone's back, and we constantly see the various members of the clans outside of the heads trying their best to avoid or overcome the feuds between them. Honestly, it seems the only ones that are keeping the feud going are Olfrid and Vignar, as the rest of their clans just seem to want the split between them to end.
    Honestly, it'd be cool if there was a mod that could allow you to convince Idolaf to help you free Thorald, and to recruit both of them as followers and perhaps even Blade members
