- Big Ron Manager is a television documentary series based on Ron Atkinson's efforts as a troubleshooter at the English football club Peterborough United, at the time playing in Football League Two. The series was screened on Sky TV in 2006.
Originally, the show was going to feature Swindon Town and Sky spent around four weeks filming there before being asked to leave by the Swindon management. Peterborough United received a fee of around £100,000 from Sky TV for access to the changing rooms and for Ron Atkinson to assist the rookie manager Steve Bleasdale. Bleasdale was unhappy at Atkinson's involvement in the changing room and subsequently banned him and the cameras from the changing rooms on matchdays. However, later in the series Bleasdale relented after being overruled by Chairman Barry Fry.
Some scenes caused quite a stir in Peterborough when the show was aired, including a dressing room brawl between Mark Arber and Paul Carden and Bleasdale rowing with youngsters Sean St Ledger and Adam Fry.
St Ledger joked about suing Sky TV, after claiming the programme showed him as the team's bad boy, which he denied. The media alighted on this, and he was later forced to clarify that the statement was in fact, a joke.
There were several instances during the filming of Atkinson upsetting Bleasdale:
Although the club were short of funds, he persuaded Barry Fry to hire a goalkeeping coach in Tony Godden
Suggesting during an injury crisis to go for Queens Park Rangers striker Stefan Moore on loan. However Bleasdale overruled Atkinson and instead snapped up Lloyd Opara on a free transfer from a local team.
In April 2006, Bleasdale walked out of Peterborough United only 70 minutes before a game against Macclesfield. It was later reported that this was due to clashes with Atkinson. Chairman Barry Fry put himself in charge for the final two games of the season.
Big Ron Manager was regarded as a low point in the fortunes of Peterborough United. However, it proved the catalyst for future revival. Property businessman Darragh MacAnthony-who previously had no connection with the club-watched the show on television and a few months purchased the club and later became chairman. Under MacAthony's investment and his appointment of Darren Ferguson as the club's manager in 2007, Peterborough gained promotion to League One in 2008 and then to the Championship in 2009.

"It's only a win at fuckin Bury." 😂
He lucked his way into that job and was out of his depth. You see coaches of Bleasdales' calibre at grass roots kids' teams. Screaming and shouting at the kids whilst the parents do the same on the touchlines. The typical English way, all passion and heart but tactically clueless.
im not sure about passion and heart either
agreed. Bleasedale looks like he's played Football Manager on the laptop and thinks he can just do it.
theres people of a weekend who put cones out and shout alot. and theres people who coach. sadly Bleasdale is the former
The problem with this programme is, although I enjoy it, Bleasdale was doing well before Ron and the cameras came in and won 5 out of 7 matches. This ruined their season.
Martin England Wow, what a sweeping assumption. So sorry for your mother that you survived your abortion. They look a bit like fried eggs too, so sorry if it's caused offence. Cheerio!
It's all about the bathhle
Get the feeling Atkinson was gutted that Peterborough won at bury!
09:37 Steve runs and hugs Ron at the door...Ron's reaction its only win away at fucking Bury funny as fuck hahaha
Lol. Classic.
I think the moment when Bleasdale gets sent to the changing room is very telling; how can he expect his team to be disciplined when he lacks the self-discipline and self-control required to be a good manager? For me, that's what separates the men from the boys in this regard.
Ah ye. Wonder how Jose did so well
Maybe Bleo should have played Mr Brightside in the dressing room before matches, certainly worked here!
a good point from ron, now lets do this one, have a good journey home
Bleasedale is a an embarrassment
Reports that Bleasdale now to be found at Rampton High Security Mental Hospital.
Wins a game and thinks he's won the world cup.
"Go out there and fucking hurt someone, fucking hurt them" What sort of advice is that?
The advice of a bloke who walked out on his team at half time, forgetting he was only the caretaker and the job he walked out on was his full time one as a coach. He believed his own hype and actually thought he was the gaffa.
Fuck me some people really have stole a living from football in the UK. Fry, Atkinson, and the clown who's supposed to be the first team coach are all embarrassing.
Fakkin play tha cant
The managers enthusiasm for the game can’t not be applauded.
A full English before the game? Surely not
You know Danny Crow has Double Sausage and Egg McMuffin Meal with Coke and two extra hash browns before he turns up for brekkie at the club
He's lucky he wasn't arrested after that game.
This sums up the whole problem:
I did a coaching seminar some years back and the FIRST question I asked was “What is the difference between a Manager and a Coach?”
The coaches there were mostly quizzical in their responses:
“They’re the same thing aren’t they?”
And that’s why we have coaches who think they are managers and managers who think they are coaches
Managers are obsessed with results...as long as they win they are satisfied
Coaches are obsessed with the PERFORMANCE of the team....if they lose but have played well then they are satisfied
Once people know WHAT they are THEN they can be affective
Coaching is developing people and managing is organizing people.
Bleasdale embarrassed himself with his tantrum over the so called ‘dive’ for the penalty. Probably the most obvious penalty of all time
Great to see Bleasdale before he really hit the big time.
Hope this is a joke
Some of you are proper nasty. He's literally just some bloke. Bitterness at a rando here is mad. Utterly mad.
look at young kasper was at bury
Bleasdale was obviously out of his depth, but Fry shouldn't have been interfering in footballing decisions. That's the problem with having an ex-manager as owner.
Managed United, Villa, WBA, Cov, Sheff Wed, but Bleo knew better.
As someone who has managed first in kids football & then adult Sunday football for the best part of a decade (and for half a season on a Saturday as an Assistant), Big Ron makes very simple points well, yes I have done some stuff like Bleo, but he was very much what I would call a "typical Under 16-s manager", loud, shouting & screaming all the time, it doesn't work all the time, the players in the end tune out.
I actually felt sorry for Bleao, he was over emotional, and over the top, you could see the pressure in his persona all the time, trying so hard to get Peterborough promoted and having to deal with politics left, right and centre...Not sure what hes up to these days, but i hope Bleao is doing okay 👍.
"Fucking hurt someone" ... great manager 😵
Tbh Barry Fry would of done better as manager than Bleasdale
No he wouldn’t 😂
It wasn't Bleasesdale's fault he was a pawn in Fry's bid to make money from selling St Leger.
Good to see how far casper schmichael has come
Bleasdale just a typical scouse hooligan evidently from his behaviour here
That's what football is all about
This guy, Bleo, was clearly one of Mark Wright's drunking buddies! Had no football acumen whatsoever!
He was actually a decent coach. Management is a different ball game though
Get that angry all out Bleo, by throwing your hat to ground.
This is so funny, Bleasdale n Barry Fry wat a winning combination!! Not sure why they didn't listen to Ron?
Cos he’s a nutter lol
Big Ron called him a twat when he is being escorted down the tunnel. LOL
So, he suddenly hears Ron?! ⚡
4:14 lmao
It's a term of endearment in London and most of Scotland.
8:17 Kasper now Premier League and FA Cup winner!
I’m sure naz kuqi was in dressing room? Thought he got sent back after one game
Absolutely embarrassing behaviour from a manager in any field. Ranting for ranting sake on the touchline. Actions of a mad man. Just out of control and manic. Disgraceful. I sit at Villa Park by the dugout never have I ever seen a manager carry on like that in 20 years.
i have. steve evans.
makes bleo look like a choir boy.
haha i recon he has no clue id never play under him
Fucking love Bleao..passion is passion
God this is funny.
Big Ron knew a clown when he saw one
Never be a manager far far to emotional
"Fucking hurt them" (nice to see fair play in football)
5:44 HOW THE F**K DID HE MISS THAT !!!!!!!!
Kasper Schmeichel!
Psycho fucking hurt someone 😂
loud mouth , he'd be a pain to play for.
schmeichel :D
?????
9:36 "it's only a win at fucking bury!" *lol*
Not the brightest, that bloke.
Does he ever stop shouting at the players!!!! Ffs.
Talk is cheap haha his talk was so cheap no one paid attention
