- Big Ron Manager is a television documentary series based on Ron Atkinson's efforts as a troubleshooter at the English football club Peterborough United, at the time playing in Football League Two. The series was screened on Sky TV in 2006.
Originally, the show was going to feature Swindon Town and Sky spent around four weeks filming there before being asked to leave by the Swindon management. Peterborough United received a fee of around £100,000 from Sky TV for access to the changing rooms and for Ron Atkinson to assist the rookie manager Steve Bleasdale. Bleasdale was unhappy at Atkinson's involvement in the changing room and subsequently banned him and the cameras from the changing rooms on matchdays. However, later in the series Bleasdale relented after being overruled by Chairman Barry Fry.
Some scenes caused quite a stir in Peterborough when the show was aired, including a dressing room brawl between Mark Arber and Paul Carden and Bleasdale rowing with youngsters Sean St Ledger and Adam Fry.
St Ledger joked about suing Sky TV, after claiming the programme showed him as the team's bad boy, which he denied. The media alighted on this, and he was later forced to clarify that the statement was in fact, a joke.
There were several instances during the filming of Atkinson upsetting Bleasdale:
Although the club were short of funds, he persuaded Barry Fry to hire a goalkeeping coach in Tony Godden
Suggesting during an injury crisis to go for Queens Park Rangers striker Stefan Moore on loan. However Bleasdale overruled Atkinson and instead snapped up Lloyd Opara on a free transfer from a local team.
In April 2006, Bleasdale walked out of Peterborough United only 70 minutes before a game against Macclesfield. It was later reported that this was due to clashes with Atkinson. Chairman Barry Fry put himself in charge for the final two games of the season.
Big Ron Manager was regarded as a low point in the fortunes of Peterborough United. However, it proved the catalyst for future revival. Property businessman Darragh MacAnthony-who previously had no connection with the club-watched the show on television and a few months purchased the club and later became chairman. Under MacAthony's investment and his appointment of Darren Ferguson as the club's manager in 2007, Peterborough gained promotion to League One in 2008 and then to the Championship in 2009.

Barry Fry: "I haven't had a cigar since the old king died."
Fry would have been seven years old.
Different time.
Whoever was in charge of music for this little series was a fucking legend
Different gravy this innit Danny boy! P.s. fancy seeing you here!
Classic mid-2000s music.
Think Jeff picked them
"That's what I was wanting, big bollocks" Ha ha, there is some real comedy gold in this series.
Ron's advice in the dressing room is pretty good
5eurocups2005 Now that’s how a proper manager gives advice to his players, not by shouting constantly like Bleasdale seems to do.
@@Dblue862 one is a successful manager. One of the 0.1% in his field. One is like you. A rando who was given a chance on the condition that Fry could make a twat out of him on TV. Bleasedale's only mistake was accepting the offer. A mistake you'd have probably made too.
"My honest opinion is our team need to win. We don't want to get beat".
This sums up how out of his depth Bleasdale was. He had no idea of what he was doing and resorted to spouting absolute one liners and shouting.
Manager was out of his depth.
Never thought I'd say this but you could see exactly why Big Ron managed at the highest level.
I mean the way Ron understands and looks at the game is so clearly better than Bleas - must have been well embarrassing to constantly be upstaged.
@@Ryotbh Ron also knows how to handle people too.
Yeah Ron’s criticisms are followed by softly spoken encouragement, no shouting required.
Every team plays in yellow or blue in that league.
? Lincoln play in Red / White, Swindon Town play in red, Yeovil Town play in green hoops, Northampton Town play in claret, Grimsby play in black / white etc
His feeling...."He wants a win, or not get beat."
They lose !
"big bollocks, that's all it is" haha
11:04. Bleo's reaction. Knows he's been caught out in a lie. 😂
Almost ‘Brent-esqe’
Or the players weren't willing to admit it to Ron Atkinson's face? Who the fuck knows. I feel like my IQ is falling through the floor by reading these comments. Putting the phone down. Retards.
@@tooshlong Easy mate, it's just some documentary from nearly 2 decades ago.
@@Scallion_D the way the bloke was treated was brutal af. He is literally "just some bloke", and now has to live with rando nobodies quipping away with their thicko takes on him. Harsh.
@@tooshlong Well in regards to my comment whether it's true or not isn't that relevant.
His reaction to when Ron mentions it to him is simply funny. As the above comment says it's very David Brent.
Madness to think a professional football club was run Like a Sunday league side an owner who wants to be the manager an ex manager wanting to pick the team and then a manager who was being undermined massively
I feel a little for Bleas - you can tell Ron was going to undermine him from the get-go. That said, he was well out of his depth and pretty bloody clueless as a manager.
"Ledge" - has any man ever had a less appropriate nickname?
Legend in his own back garden
Lol!@@macca696
Its very evident that Ron+Barry are doing everying to help Bleasdale. Yet, he simply sees it as interference. Its very evident why he's equally failed at other clubs.
Though it riled him, he shouldn't have openly disagreed with Ron at 3:55. In a way, assuming this wasn't heavily edited, Bleo's told them to raise their game 10% and then Ron's expanded on that...then Bleo jumps back in, disagrees and muddies the waters for the players.
Opara plays like a competition winner
Good to see our southampton hero Lambert on here while watching this nice extra suprise ;)
This would be a great mockumentary syle sit-com.
Sportings David Brent ... AKA , " Bleo "
Funnier than Spinal Tap.
"if you get beat by having bollocks, i don't give a shite. Big bollocks, that's what it is"
As much as I don't agree with the managers approach (lack of concise constructive instruction) Ledgers attitude is so bad. Makes you really think how hard it must be to manage. It must happen to better managers too
Useless manager was Bleasdale
That pie crust at 7.55. Who the hell eats a pie like that?
inspector_melvin someone who desperately needs their hard drive checked
@@thecornedbeefcouncil9792 Lol. Yeah big nonce vibes.
Awww I could cry for poor Steve. He puts his heart and soul into it and think he could have been great given the right circumstances and environment. Hope he is doing well the poor fella.
Not at all, heart and soul aint enough, every single fan at every single game wishes he was good enough to play for that particular team, you must have talent, skill and knowledge as well.
To prove that Steve was useless...he's a wedding photographer now.
Rickie Lambert playing for Rochdale haha
Iffy was proved right. Atkinson just meddled.
just shows the difference between being a coach and a manager is very different. When your a coach you can be everyones mate but when bleasdale stepped up to manager it was hard for him to deal with the different personalities and confrontations associated with the job.
these are a 4-4-2 team or a 4-3-3 team.
So glad to see steve bleasdale's career flourished.....erm...yeah
Have you watched Mike Bassett England Manager?
These lower league managers always think they are tactical geniuses. That Logan who told him he was a professional footballer. Opara was a great signing.
These lot are 4-3-3 or 4-4-2 team even manager Bleo hasn’t got clue his opponents before the game. While Ron is sitting in corner in dressing room biting his lip.
Bleasdale the ‘cliche king’......... nob
It would be amazing now!!
"Big bollocks! That's what it is"
lovely guy. barry fry....
Big bollocks, there's the secret.
You can see that Ron would of rather managed the team himself, as a caretaker at least to the end of the season. Even if he said earlier he didn’t want to. I think Barry should of just hired him as the manager. This is why Bleo couldn’t make it in management, changing the formation ever game is ridiculous.
Iyesden Christie played for my team, Mansfield, and he was pretty good for us haha!
BOLLOCKS! BIG BOLLOCKS!
NoMoreHideTheBall I HAVE BIG BOLLOCKS WHATS YOUR FUCKING PROBLEM
Bleasdale shit stirring with Gainy and his midfield partner. He asks for input at half time...... which Ron gives.
We don't wanna get beat
He's played for about 20 different teams, after us he went on to Kidderminster and then his career petered out really, he plays non league for alfreton in the conference now!
11.20 why does Ron turn in to Terry Tibbs?
Cliche shout repeat. Cliche shout repeat 😂😂
ron carried them !
There was a reason these players where playing in league 1 is because they wasn't good enough to play at a higher level it doesn't matter whether big ron was there or not
not really before ron came into the fold he was winning games and doing well as soon has ron came in the form slumped and the players started being nobs and disrespecting the manager
The commentator's annoying, everything is "can he spin/turn, he can..."
That steve would be a good warehouse manager at tesco
Cracking player What ever happened to him?
plymouth argyle should do this. a cool million from sky in the bank
Big Bollox!
Fry slagging players off ' seem to think he wasn't to great
Jesus, Iyesden Christie scoring past your team means you deserve to be sacked.
11:00 onwards very awkward
Who is he referring to when he says old King 😂😂
Maybe he was a big elvis fan
George VI.
Underrated comment!@@macca696
The team is kinda shit, but not so bad they couldn't win in League Two... if you ask me even if Bleasdale was coaching Barcelona he couldn't win xD
Classic case of 'Winging it'
Run hard.
Kick something.
Big bollocks.
My niece would coach them better.
He’s soo fucking cringeworthy it’s painful. Is it for the cameras all the big bs speeches? Ron comes across as quite eloquent in comparison.
Why the hell is racist Ron in the dug out?
allthewine He’s forgotten more about football than you know.
Ron literally spent his time undermining Bleasedale Infront of the players throughout the whole series 😂 irrespective of how poor Bleasedale fared, he was hardly given much of a chance with these antics from Fry.
