What Happens To Your Body When You Drink Too Much Coffee

  • It’s almost impossible to overdose on coffee. The average American drinks 3 cups of coffee per day and there is a lethal dose of caffeine, but it’s somewhere around 10 grams. And the average cup of joe has around 100 milligrams.
Following is a transcript of the video:
Benji: This is me and I love coffee. The intoxicating nutty aroma. The rich chocolatey taste.
Some days I drink three cups like the average American I am. Other days, I drink more like five or six. But is that too much? First the good news. It's almost impossible to overdose on coffee.
There is a lethal dose of caffeine but it's somewhere around 10 grams and the average cup of Joe has around 100 milligrams. You'd likely have to drink 100 cups in rapid succession to OD. But that's not to say there's no such thing as too much. The FDA recommends no more than four to five cups a day for the average healthy adult. More than that and you might start to experience some nasty side effects.
Most people take in coffee to increase their focus and concentration, but once you take in too much, you start to lose that focus. People start getting more agitated, irritable.
Benji: That's thanks to the hormone, adrenaline. When caffeine hits your system it stimulates your adrenal glands which release the hormone into your body. It makes you feel energetic and alert. Perfect for a fight or flight situation. But too much can be a bad thing. Especially if you suffer from anxiety.
Dr. Albert Ahn: But with anxiety you also wanna be careful not to overstimulate or trigger any sort of panic attacks and make anxiety worse, which certainly too much caffeine can do.
Benji: Adrenaline from caffeine can also increase your heart rate. That's why doctors also recommend against drinking coffee if your heart sometimes beats irregularly. But the risk is really only for bonafide coffee junkies. According to at least two observational studies you have to drink at least nine cups of coffee a day to put yourself at risk of arrhythmia. And finally, there's the question of sleep. Coffee's enemy.
Caffeine launches a double threat on your slumber. It blocks the neurochemical adenosine which is what tells your brain that you're tired. It releases a cocktail of stimulants into your brain. Adrenaline, dopamine, and glutamate. So after downing your sixth cup of coffee, you don't just feel awake but full of energy. It will power you through that 2:30 meeting or the last class of the day. But if you overdo it, the effect won't wear off when it's time for bed.
In one study, researchers monitored the sleep of a dozen volunteers. Some were given a caffeine pill equivalent to about four cups of coffee and others received a placebo instead. Even when the volunteers swallowed the caffeine pills six hours before bedtime, they spent significantly less time in the light stages of sleep. And that can have detrimental effects on daytime function, the authors report.
Dr. Albert Ahn: It's sort of just stuck in this loop where you're not sleeping because you drink too much coffee and then you wake up in the morning and you're not well rested and you're drinking more coffee just to stay awake in the day.
Benji: Sound familiar? Here's the good news. If you cut yourself off by 2:00 you typically won't have trouble falling asleep. That's because the half-life of caffeine is around five hours. And so most of its stimulating effects will wear off well before the lights go out. And if you also limit your consumption, well then coffee can actually offer a number of health benefits. Research shows that it can help with everything from memory, to exercise, to your relationships with your colleagues. And that's great because for some of us, coffee is something we'll just never give up.

here's several ideas for stopping drinking at home
Try to eat food when you are drinking - this cuts down the amount you drink.
      Take a break from alcohol.
Make a note of how much you drink, then you know if you are cutting down.
Set yourself goals - don't make them too difficult at first.
Choose one or two days or every week when you will not drink at all. Next, try to stop drinking for one week per month.

Overdosing on caffeine is very scary. When I take too much pre workout you feel invincible for about 15-20 mins then bang you start to get dizzy and feel sick. Then whenever you stand up the whole room spins and you feel your heart going 90 pumping through your chest. The scariest day of my life was last year I took around 1000mg of caffeine and I thought I was going to black out and take a stroke. I couldn’t breathe. But I just lay down and tried not to panic. If you panic more while overdosing it really could be fatal.

I gave up coffee and the following 3 days were like hell for me emotionally and mentally.
I started crying for no reason then at times got very angry and irritable.
It took me 3 and a half days to go back to my normal state of being.
I drank a lot of water in the meantime to flush out all the caffeine out of my system.
Also lime juice helped me to stay hydrated and calm.
My advice would be if you want to get rid of your caffeine addiction and want to try it don't go cold turkey at one go.
Start by reducing the number of cups you drink per day.
Lets say if you drink 10 cups/day reduce it by 2cups and drink 8 the next day and stick to your plan.
You would need to dedicate around 3-4 days to completely decaffeinate yourself.
And believe me,its totally worth your time and effort, especially for your mental health and pocket!

Your body counters the blood dilation from the caffeine, causing your blood vessels to constrict. That's why.
It's also why going cold turkey off of coffee causes migraines and drowsiness.
I switched to loose leaf tea for that reason. It's harder to OD on it.

I’ve been drinking coffee for already 3 years. Not because I drink it because I like the taste, but to keep me awake. I always feel tired and sleepy without coffee. I used to drink about 3-4 cups a day, but now I drink less than 2 because it causes me feeling anxious. Also, coffee helps me to stay awake, focus and energetic despite the fact that it gives me stomach ache and pee a lot.
I tried to stop drinking coffee several times but I couldn’t stand with that withdrawal symptoms. And since then, I always wanna puke whenever I drink coffee but I just forced myself. Even I sleep 8 hours a day, i still feel less enegertic unless I drink a cup. I’m finishing school in the next few days, so I hope I can get away myself from taking coffee because I do not need to study at night and focus in class anymore.

Im a caffeine addict. Coffee turns me into an absolute mess. When I withdraw from it I start shaking all over my body. I am a recovering alcoholic, and so when I stopped using drugs and alcohol I went to caffeine. It was the same shit just with a different drug. I’m not saying stay away from caffeine, but I’m an abnormal guy, and I absolutely cannot handle caffeine in any form. I am extremely sensitive to it.

5-6 cups of coffee a day?!!! That’s outrageous😂 I only have one every few days depending on how I feel. But that’s crazy😂

Is that doctor talking to himself? 😶😶

  • @thedemotivationalspeaker3090

I don’t drink coffee every morning, but when I do I like to have a lot. So we’re talking a really strong cold-brew, a triple or quadruple shot latte, or a caffene-infused energy drink. I don’t eat in the morning, so I get this agitated feeling at a much lower dose. I notice that if I get really hungry I get tired, grumpy, and we’ll, I feel hungry. The caffene takes away the hunger and tiredness but still leaves me unfocused and irritable. When this happens I just eat something with sugar and these negative effects go away again. Does this happen to anyone else?

Usually when that happens it means something else is wrong in my opinion. You might be drinking too much or your not getting enough sleep from drinkin coffee too often.

Coffeine addiction is real. I drink at least 3 cups a day and I get a headache in the morning if I refuse to drink at least a cup. I think I should quit this, it's just making me anxious nowadays.
