I work in advertising, and I'm willing to bet the first draft of this spot (when the advertising agency first pitched it to the Pepsi brand managers) had NO inclusion of Kendall Jenner.
"We just want to show how Pepsi can bring people together," the agency said. "You know, like Coke did back in the '70s with that song, "I'd like to teach the world to sing, in perfect harmony."
But then, one of the Pepsi brand managers (who have NO training in ad concepting) said, "You know what would make this video so much better? A celebrity! And we've got a deal with -- wait for it -- Kendall Jenner!"
The ad agency probably sighed really hard and then said, "Damn it. Okay."

Technically, the absurdity of it alone is spreading the Pepsi name all over the place. I think, while they may or may not have actually intended the outcome, their job was basically done.
That's a valid idea I agree, at the same time I struggle to see the advantages in alienating pretty much everyone with this advert.
