Here it is 2024, and I am still lovin' me some Phil Upchurch...and Booker T & the MG's, too, of course. This was the soundtrack of my teenage years, and it still hits me the huge talent here! Mr. Upchurch, if you read this, know you are not forgotten, and never will be. Thank you for the musical joy you have brought my life!
Just like Olly Braithwaite, I had this on a VHS tape that bit the dust long ago, it's lovely to hear and see it again - the whole band has such a mellow groove, and Phil's playing is outstanding. Always was a player of quality and class.
The superb Phil Upchurch with BT & the MG's backing! Upchurch was very versatile; he's from Detroit and when still a kid recorded with John Lee Hooker. Check out "The Motor City is Burning." What a player!
GREAT GUITARIST ...BUT : Un4tunately, most of his first 10 or so lps are 2 commercial easy-listening AOR-radio funk,- NOT serious jazz. Only his 1st.lp, FEELIN BLUE -- Mlst (1969) is good. All the Blue Thumb and JAM stuff is close to elevator-muzak cat. Not familiar w his 90s onw releases. Check out his looong interview on Jake Feinberg ch. 2hrs. An important studio man, howevvuhh ...a rare 1 to catch live, not my luck.

What a brilliant performance. The groove is just so thick.
