Without Bernie Taupin, Elton John would be a brilliant composer, piano player and singer. Without Elton John, Bernie Taupin would be a brilliant lyricist and poet. Together, they have been creating magic for 50 years. One of the most fortuitous meetings of genius in music history.

So true! Bernie gets a lot of credit, but perhaps not enough. Unique lyrics are certainly one thing that sets "Elton John" apart. Very few lyricists in popular music come close to the originality and complexity of lyrics in songs like Tiny Dancer.

About 25 years ago I took my wife and mom to see Elton. Right before the show started, he came out and said I got some bad news and some good news. Bad news...My band and their instruments didn't make it to the show tonight.... but the good news, for the next 3 hours you got me and my piano and the place went nuts. It ended up being amazing...fantastic performer!

What an awesome song, knew you'd love it.
    'Levon' next perhaps?
Reginald Kenneth Dwight wanted to change his name to something flashier. He picked Elton from 'Elton Dean' who was the sax player in the band he played with and 'John' from the lead singer of that band 'Bluesology', '(Long) John Baldry.
Check out 'Long John Baldry & Kathi McDonald - You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'. It's epic.
Fun Fact: 'Tony Burrows' sings backup on both 'Levon' and 'Tiny Dancer'. Tony sings on well over a 100 well know British hits from the 60's and 70's. He also was a 'One Hit Wonder' 6 times under different names!
Edison Lighthouse's 'Love Grows (Where My Rosemary Goes),' 'White Plains - My Baby Loves Lovin', "The Pipkins ridiculous Gimme Dat Ding,' and 'The Brotherhood of Man's - United We Stand,' all were big hits in the U.S. and U.K. and here in Canada back in 1970. All sung by Tony Burrows. Cool eh. Later on he was the singer for 'First Class - Beach Baby'.
    Cheers.

Bernie Taupin writes all of Elton’s lyrics. Elton writes all the music. Wikipedia-The song's lyrics were inspired by Taupin's first visit to the US in 1970, and were intended to capture the spirit of California, where he found the women he met highly contrasted with those whom he had known in his home country of England. Taupin also stated in a 1973 interview in Rolling Stone that the song is about Maxine Feibelman, his wife at the time. In 2019, Feibelman said, "I knew [the song] was about me. I had been into ballet as a little girl and sewed patches on Elton's jackets and jeans", referring to the song's description of a "seamstress for the band".

Later Bernie, after his divorce and remarriage, backtracked and tried to say it was about LA women in general, not about her specifically, but that was clearly not true. It must be hard to write a song about someone when you are madly in love, and then hear it over and over after things have gone bad.

This song took almost Thirty Years to become a hit. When it was released in 1972 it barely made the charts. Elton was mostly an album artist at the time and had only one top ten hit "Your Song" which broke out in 1970. Tiny Dancer was a Fan Favorite, and he played it at most of his shows. Then in 2000, a movie called "Almost Famous" became a big hit. The movie was about the music scene in 1972, and it featured this song. The song started getting regular airplay and for the last 24 years, the song has gotten bigger and bigger in its impact. In the past five years or so, it has gotten popular enough to be considered one of his all-time greatest and most well-loved songs.

In this short clip from 1971, Elton sits down at the piano with the lyrics to Tiny Dancer, which he is still putting the finishing touches on. He begins playing the song, and stops at the end of each verse, and at the beginning of the chorus, and explains how he came up with them. Wonderful to hear the thought processes behind the making of this great song. Elton's part begins at 0:29. czcams.com/video/fswdJilCBKM/video.htmlsi=2ThClnJ-umcpran1

Best reaction channel on CZcams. Nobody else seems to properly prepare, understand, and internalize the music of my era. Well done again Shon. The Taupin/ EJ team produced extraordinary songs for decades. As a funny aside Taupin is also responsible for what some consider the worst song ever…..Starship’s We Built This City (on Rock-N-Roll).

Seamstress for the band. This is the woman who is referred to by Dr. Hook as the person "who embroidres on my jeans".

i believe bernie writes the lyrics at his home (for example)sends them to elton.he puts them on his piano where he messes around coming up with a basic tune/melody then prob goes into the studio works on it some more.what instraments he wants, what they are going to play, when they each come in etc.obvs the musicians and producer will have input.

Amazing song by an amazing artist. Another you need to hear is Bennie and the Jets. Elton played it on Soul Train and it brought down the house.

One of the best movie scenes is the band singing Tiny Dancer on their tour bus in Almost Famous. Recommend watching it for the soundtrack alone.

Also keep in mind he was FLAMING back in the 70s when it was harder for LGBTQ performers. He often wore feather boas and giant sunglasses and funny hats. He is also knighted by the Queen of England, he's a Sir.

@5:47-ish, your description, Isn't that a beautiful metaphor for a life spent with someone you love. It builds. You're constantly adding things to make it better. At times, you change your cadence., try something new or steer around obstacles. but no matter what it gets better and better as you go along.

I think you would like “Empty Garden” by Elton- he wrote it about John Lennon. It’s wonderful
