I believe he came a few yrs too late due to the fact that the Pistons were on the decline andand the league was moving towards a young Lebron at that point, along with being more offensive. There was a game that I saw pure cohesiveness and that was vs The Lakers at the Forum. They ran LA off the floor. Iverson, Sheed and everybody was in total sync that night and it was a beauty. I believe with Chauncey gone that team was totally different and Iverson could of scored more easier with that te than ever before with a Sheed, Rip, McDyess and a plus from Tayshaun. No way that squad shouldn't of met up with Mia or Clev I'm the ECF that year.

I remember how he got to Detroit...but it made sense why they benched him.
At the time, the Pistons thought Stuckey was going to be the next D.Wade, which is why they were cool sending an aging Billups away. This was of course a bad decision. First off Stuckey had no range, and also was no D.Wade. Secondly, having Stuckey, Hamilton and Iverson all on the same team, with no ball distributor pretty much destroyed their offense.
Also AI's injuries piled up and he missed a lot of time during that year in Detroit. The following season he ended up in Memphis, but wanted to start ahead of O.J. Mayo or Conley, which, in both cases was insane. So he had issues, only played 3 games, and then they ended up sending him back to the Sixers. At that point, you could simply watch the games, and tell he just didn't have it anymore.
He went to play in Turkey for one year, didn't look good and by that point it was a wrap. In a sense, this was all inevitable: the dude average 40+ minutes/game for his entire career, and was notorious for playing while hurt and injured. These are things that a lot of analytical guys take for granted nowadays, because they think so much about efficiency that they don't get it's heart, passion and competitiveness that puts people in the seats and gets the respect of one's peers, which is why A.I. was so respected by fans and his peers.

@AudricMorrison: When Iverson was in Philly, he carried the load. They were a defensive minded team but grossly limited. Iverson really didn't have the weapons and it showed when the Sixers played the Lakers. His sheer will and ability got them that far. Detroit just flat out lied to him and it showed. Denver was where his career went to die. Put Shaq with the Sixers and Iverson gets his ring. Put Iverson with a better coach in Denver and he might have picked up a second ring before his career ended.

Alan never thought the Rules applied to him. His Get of jail free cards were used up in Philly soooo really what did he expect? Washed himself out of the NBA!

What I realize is how difficult it is for some of these players to accept the fact that at some point, the limelight is going to be dimming around them. New and younger players will come on and the game might be moving away from them. Just because you have been an all star, a champion or a franchise player, if your game is not up there, you might not be good enough to start. A coach can either respect your past achievements or do what’s best for the team.

@@tayjones8303, you try again. You can average 27 points a game and still have a negative impact. No matter how many points you score, if your game is not helping a team win games, you are not useful to the team. You can’t treat a team sport like an individual sport. At the end, a coach has to determine what your individual performance is contributing or costing the team.

Asking the best player on the team to not start, is disrespectful.
I would walked or at least, throw the game & if his teammates were loyal & did it with him, good for them.

He knew all his accolades without missing a beat.
But none of those accomplishments led his team to a championship victory.
    Much like Russell Westbrook.
When Andre Iguodala agreed to "off the bench", he won his first Championship & Finals MVP.

Iguo and AI were also 2 COMPLETELY different caliber players as well. You're talking HOF'er vs regular starter.
