I worked on this film. Leslie Ann was a joy. She bought all the crew presents every Friday. Alex Karras insisted on a big TV to see his Detroit Lions play. He was Mongo in Blazing Saddles

So Julie Andrews reprised the role in the 90's when it became a broadway show, but turned down a sure Tony win because she didn't like that other actors in the show were not nominated and that just shows you the kind of lady Julie is.
She was also specifically pissed that Rachel York was not nominated. Rachel had worked with Julie before and Julie really championed for her on and offstage. Rachel gave one the best reviewed performances that year and her not getting nominated was seen as an insult especially by Julie. She is one actress who will always have your back.
Unfortunately, that was also the show that killed her voice: Doing that low voice 8 shows a week caused her to develop hoarseness, which doctors attributed to nodules on her vocal chords. Not normally a huge problem, but the surgery to fix it was botched, destroying her legendary four-octave range. She filed a malpractice suit against the hospital and she didn't sing in public again until Princess Diaries 2 in 2004, and even then it's never been the same.
@@kateorgera5907was the surgery before or after the filming of the Broadway show? Le jazz hot you can definitely hear the break between her chest and head voices. It’s such a shame the surgery was botched. Forever and always an icon and class act.

@@kateorgera5907 it’s still excellent and that’s the slide up in Le Jazz Hot is the only place you can hear it. But the show is really fantastic, and definitely worth watching. you can probably find it on CZcams
back in the day at many upper-class hotels offered to shine/clean shoes of guests at night and return them in the morning. the man was trying to leave his shoes out for the porter to collect and when he kept seeing people acting suspiciously outside his door he thought they may try to steal them.

My dad is a staunch homophobic conservative but even he absolutely loves this movie. We will sit and watch every time it’s on tv. Never underestimate the power of a good movie.
In a less important way, this was groundbreaking in that all of the lead actors were 40 years old or older. Andrews was 47, Garner in his fifties, and Preston was in his 60s. Not as big a deal as telling a queer-positive in 1982, but definitely an interesting aspect of the movie.
Older artists have improved their craft and it's great to see.
This movie was such a milestone for gender identity and LGBTQ+ visibility. Yes, some of the language may be offensive now, but there's no denying the positive portrayals. I saw it on VHS in the early 80s as a gay teenager and was blown away. It was one of the very first time I saw us portrayed positively in a movie. Apart from those very good reasons to love it, it has an amazing cast giving wonderful performances, and it's funny as hell. An older boyfriend I had when I was in my early 20s used to quote it often. As I still do. 😄
The impact of the fact that Julie Andrews, then as now known to most filmgoers as the wholesome heroine in two of the most beloved, family-friendly musicals of all time, *Mary Poppins* (1964) and *The Sound of Music* (1965), was the star of this LGBTQ-positive film can hardly be overstated. In 1991, Julie would appear in another gay-friendly film, the tv movie *Our Sons.*
Same I watched it as a 14 year old girl with my best friend and school friend who was gay. He loved it so much.
Norma is the best thing in the movie, best performance. Such an amazing combination of uneducated base vulgarity and also tenderness and honesty.
Talk about an underrated movie that people rarely react to but should watch since its theme is so relatable nowadays! Thank you!!!
This was a delightful movie, not in the least because of the wonderful Robert Preston and the rest of the excellent cast.
This movie is a trope-slaughtering machine wrapped in an approximation of a bawdy French farce. And who doesn't love a bawdy French farce? It's a favorite of mine since forever. I just adore Robert Preston as Toddy. Glad you enjoyed it, Great reaction.
The story was changed from the original premise that King Marchand didn't really know if the Count was male or female- he fell in love and didn't care what others thought. The studio made the director (Andrews' actual husband) change that aspect of the story to avoid public protest.
Blake Edwards' masterpiece! The perfect exemplar of his particular comedy style and a virtually perfect film. The entire cast is brilliant. The great Robert Preston, whose career spanned from 1938 to 1987, was nominated Best Supporting actor and was criminally robbed in not winning it. The film is a remake of the 1933 German film "Viktor Und Viktoria".
I'm a straight female & I saw this movie as a young teen. I have always loved it. Of course I grew up watching the Rockford Files with James Garner, & loved the Sound Of Music with Julie Andrews. Since then Julie Andrews has played in The Princess Diaries, & The Tooth Fairy. Didn't see The Princess Diaries myself, but I did see The Tooth Fairy, & loved that too. But this one I've always loved, & I think it's very clever, & very comedic.
This was one of my grandmother's favorite films and became one of mine as well. I just shared it with my 13yo this year, and now she's trying to get one of the musical numbers in her school's talent show. :-D
Also, this was based on a movie actually made in the 1930's. Yes, genderbending has always been around and always will be (thank goodness).
I first saw this in 1986 or so, when the gay & lesbian association at my college did a screening of it (in those days VCRs and tape rentals existed, but they cost a lot more than students like me could afford) and it instantly became one of my favorite movies. Really glad you enjoyed it as well.

Lesley Ann Warren also appeared in three other notable musicals: as the title character in the second television production of Rodgers and Hammerstein's *Cinderella* (1965), and in Disney's *The Happiest Millionaire* (1967) and *The One and Only, Genuine, Original Family Band* (1968).
If you watch the 1976 BBC miniseries I, Claudius, you will see a very young John Rhys-Davies alongside equally young Patrick Stewart, John Hurt, and, more obscurely, Kevin McNally, better known as Gibbs in the Pirates of the Caribbean films. Oh, and also Patricia Quinn, aka Magenta in Rocky Horror.
John Rhys Davies was in at least the first couple of Indiana Jones films.
Bernstein (King's Body Guard) was played by former Football Star, Alex Karras. He also played Mongo in Blazing Saddles. While Karras was straight he was close friends with his fellow Football Players who were Gay.
He was good in Webster, tv show in the eighties.
Uncle Boomer, here. I fell in love with this film the first time I saw it. I was so sure I was going to hell after seeing it. I came out of the closet shortly after it's release. I still love this film even more with each passing year.
I'm 60 and I remember when this came out and I found it so refreshing that a movie was open and funny and talked about these topics because, as a young heterosexual at the time, I found it interesting....I wanted to see that. I was just forming my liberal identity after being raised (ha ha) by a bigoted father.
The themes discussed in this movie were BEFORE ITS TIME!.
I also say Julie Andrews reprise this role in the late 90's in a preBroadway run in Chicago. Fabulous.
First time I watched this, back in the 80s, I cried laughing. Robert Preston is spectacular as Toddy! All the cast do such an amazing job - fantastic film that handles LGBTQ+ issues with warmth and love and so much laughter. Loved your reaction and I'm so happy you enjoyed it xxx
I saw this when I was younger and so many things went over my head. I just remembered it being funny. I'm really happy to see it through your eyes and with today's current sensibilities. My cousin dressed in drag in the 80s and 90s and he enjoyed this film immensely. #LoveIsLove
This is actually a very close remake of a German film from 1934 (which of course means it was simply set in the present day at the time), which wasn't even allowed to run in America for being "obscene." And it's aged spectacularly well for an LGBT film made during this time, especially considering some of Blake Edwards' other movies have quite a bit of, shall we say, less than PC jokes (probably most notorious is Mickey Rooney's horrific Asian stereotype character in Breakfast at Tiffany's). About the only thing left to be desired is some kind of acknowledgement of bisexuality, and since the movie is set in the '30s when there was hardly any consideration of that anyway, it's really not a problem.
This is a great movie for the queer community. I think it's a great one for people who recently came out to watch to get introduced to some of the queer media history. I personally feel that's important for the queer community as a bisexual woman myself who came out at nineteen years old. 🙂
Another all-time fave of mine! It just makes me happy every time I watch it and I'm glad you seemed to enjoy it so much! Most of the main actors played totally against type in their roles and they all really nailed it. Robert Preston as Toddy was a real gem, of course. The film is a hilarious triumph all around, and as a young gay man in 1982 it was the first film dealing with gay themes that I ever saw in the theater. Needless to say, I saw it several times when it first came out and have watched it often since because the entertainment value never fades.

That man kept bringing his shoes back in because he thought one of them was going to steal them. Normally, you'd put your shoes in front of your door and the hotel staff would shine them for you.
What really shocks me is that the film came out in 1982 and was a remake of a 1933 film! It has a 97% on Rotten Tomatoes, won an Academy Award and was nominated for seven, won a Golden Globe and was nominated for five, won a Grammy, and made a domestic gross nearly double its budget, in spite of or because of its subject matter--in 1982. Andrews refused a Tony Award for her role when she reprised it on Broadway in 1995. Her husband Blake Edwards wrote both the screenplay and theatrical play, and Henry Mancini wrote most of the music for the Broadway version before passing away. Speaking of which, Toddy was originally to have been played by Peter Sellers, but he died before filming began.
Victoria/Victoria was one of the top 10 grossing films of Julie Andrews' entire career.
I adore this movie and every performance! The chemistry between Robert Preston and Julie Andrews is so warm and loving, I could watch them interact all day. You may want to try Connie and Carla, not as well known, but so much fun!
This was an American remake. There were at least 2 other versions - a British & German version from the 1930s. Both are interesting - since an American version would've been impossible under the 'Hays Code'. It took another 50 years for Hollywood to dare to touch this. Even in its day, Blake Edwards was pushing people out of their 'comfort zones'.... not exactly groundbreaking, but a gentle nudge in a more inclusive direction.

VICTOR/VICTORIA is one of my favorite musicals. I was a kid when I watched this movie for the 1st time. I believe it was the 1st movie that introduced me to homosexuality. I watched it because I had a bit of a crush on Julie Andrews because I had seen her in MARY POPPINS & THE SOUND OF MUSIC. My grandma & I watched it together. I would often watch old movies w/my grandma. Later, when they showed it on public TV & I watched it @ home, my mom was not too pleased. She told me to turn it off because she didn't want me to watch a movie like that. I asked "Why?", & told her it was too late I'd already seen it.😄 I'm glad u liked it. I enjoyed your reaction & commentary @ the end.😊

Up until recently, I have never watched any reaction more than once. Then, by some miracle, I found your channel and I never looked back. I would like to request the 1988 movie Torch Song Trilogy because sometimes we forget how far we've come.
You're the only person I've seen do a reaction to this movie. It's one of my all time favorites. I always wanted to ask James about the filming of it on one of his visits home. He had family around the corner from us for the last 50 years or so. Thank you for the reaction I really enjoyed the trip down memory lane.
Andrews really could shatter glasses. She'd do as a parlor trick at parties and get-togethers. The operation to her throat put a stop to that.
Robert Preston was brilliant in everything. Also love him in The Music Man and The Last Starfighter.
Robert Preston also made a memorable appearance in the screen version of Jerry Herman's Broadway musical *Mame* (1974).

Both Leslie Ann Warren and Julie Andrews took the roles in this film to break with their wholesome girl next door image: Warren in live action "Cinderella " for CBS TV (1965?) and Andrew's as Mary Poppins and Maria ("The Sound of Music")
Julie was also in a live version of Cinderella in the late 50s so there's that connection with Leslie Ann. There are several French-style comedic nods to the Pink Panther film, directed by Julie's hubbie Blake Edwards who also directed this film. The comedic things that befell the detective, the mayhem over the cockroach in the restaurant are examples.

The progressiveness of this film can not be discounted. Although there are a few parts of this that can be questionable, this film is such a warm and accepting one towards LGBTQ+ folks and issues.
Julie Andrews, Robert Preston (Toddy), and Lesley Anne Down (Norma) were nominated for acting Oscars. The film was written, produced, and directed by Blake Edwards, Julie's real-life husband. Julie and Blake did several films together in the 70s and 80s, several of them classics...'10', 'S.O.B.', 'The Man Who Loved Women', and 'That's Life'. They were married for 41 years until Blake passed in 2010 and Julie has never remarried...and they were the second marriage for both.
Speaking of Blake...he was a MASTER of this type of comedy film, especially with the 'Pink Panther' films starring Peter Sellars in the 60s until the 80s. He also made the classics 'Days of Wine and Roses', 'Breakfast At Tiffany's', 'Operation Petticoat', and 'The Great Race'.
Julie and James Garner (King) did another film together...'The Americanization of Emily'.
If you didn't catch it...the agent, Andre Cassel was played by John Rhys Davies aka Gimli son of Gloin and Treebeard from 'The Lord of the Rings'.
Robert Preston has always been one of my favorites...from Professor Harold Hill in 'The Music Man' (which he created in the original Broadway production) all the way to Centauri in his final film 'The Last Starfighter'. Two movies I very strongly recommend. 'The Last Starfighter' has rather dated CGI (the first film to really use it)...but it is so good. Basically, the greatest Steven Spielberg movie that Spielberg had absolutely nothing to do with!

This has always been one of my favorites from back in the day ... my second favorite Blake Edward's film (my favorite being "The Great Race" with Tony Curtis, Natalie Wood, and Jack Lemmon -- which I would recommend if you've never seen it. Natalie Wood is FABULOUS)

This is a Blake Edwards film, and in the 80's, he was the only studio filmmaker who was dealing with this kind of topic. Everyone else was still completely hung up (no, I'm not counting John Waters), but Blake did adult comedies about sex. (He directed "10", which was quite risque for a big-budget Hollywood film of the time.) This film is charming but it's also pushing the envelope of the time. Also, Blake was Julie Andrews's husband, and was the one who pried her out of that interminable Nice Lady image. :)
So many good Blake Edwards films... The Pink Panther movies, 10, Victor/Victoria, Switch, Blind Date, and my favorite, S.O.B.

Great movie, so funny! James Garner was a legend. Support Your Local Gunfighter is a classic comedy, you should really check it out. Alec Karras was hilarious as the bodyguard who comes out of the closet. He played Mongo in Blazing Saddles.

Great reaction to this absolute classic film! One of my all-time favorites! Fantastic cast and crew all at the top of their games. I highly recommend the other 2 cross-dressing films from the same time, Tootsie and Yentl. Both are wonderful films and each are very different with different tones even though they all deal with sexuality and male-female sexual and societal roles. ❤️
Did anyone recognize Mongo from Blazing Saddles (Alex Karras) The football player/Body Guard? In Fine hotels, they often offer shoe shine service. If you put your shoes outside your door they will shine them up by morning for you for free. You then tip the shoe-shine boy in the lobby for his night service.
On the subject of gender issues going back many decades, I expect you're aware that the 1992 film Orlando (with Tilda Swinton in the title role) was based on the 1928 novel by Virginia Woolf, in which she fantasizes her relationship with Vita Sackville-West. It's one of my favorite novels. [Of course, sexuality was quite diverse in the ancient world, as well as modern times.]

She's amazing in just about everything she does and has been working on stage and screen since she was a teenager. Robert Preston (Toddy) is a Broadway legend having originated Harold Hill in The Music Man on Broadway and on film.

I've never seen the original 1933 VICTOR VICTORIA... a German effort. In 1935, the first American version was FIRST A GIRL with Jessie Mathews and this shows up on TCM every once in a while. The story is resurrected in Germany in 1957 but this 1982 version has the superior cast and especially the director. That 'across the street' scene of the cockroach-in-restaurant is sooo fantastic.

Ok, confession time. All those things Miss Cassidy said to Todd about his being gay was a waste & that the right woman could reform him? I thought those things when I 1st learned about homosexuality. 🤦♀️ I really didn’t understand it at all. Of course, I didn’t know anyone who was gay & was very sheltered as a child, but it took a long time for me to come around to accepting it wasn’t a choice & that people were born that way. I didn’t hate or condemn gayness, I just didn’t comprehend it. But that journey made it much easier for me to understand trans people, & what they go through (as much as any straight woman can), so it was worth it in my opinion.

I've never actually seen this movie (and it's also before my time), but I grew up watching Julie Andrews movies on video and DVD. From watching the synopsis of this movie from your react video, I think some context is needed about the main actress Julie Andrews. This legendary actress was and still is more so very well known for her roles in 'wholesome' (LOL) children's movies such a "Sound of Music" and "Mary Poppins". So, casting her in a movie like this, with scenes where she laid face-down on a mattress awaiting her landlord's 'backdoor entry', I would imagine was not typical of a Julie Andrews movie....now, THAT'S what you call awesome casting!! LMAO. Will definitely watch this entire movie, though.
Btw, you should definitely react to two of her classics from the early 1960s --- "Sound of Music", and "Mary Poppins". Those are movies where even today, parents show their children growing up. We watched those movies over 100 times in the 1990s growing up...lmao
Also, per your statement around the 10:00 minute mark --- I've never heard anyone ever say that LGBTQ is a new thing. In fact, most people are aware that world history is full of LGBTQ people. There are numerous examples cited in holy books, and throughout written history. On a related note, LGBTQ themes were also openly portrayed in pre-code era Hollywood movies (movies before 1934). The pre-code era of movies was very open with language, sexuality, drug use, and other themes that we see today. But to cut a long story short, after 1933 there was a sort of 'forced industry self-censorship' which made it more difficult to widely distribute a film if the movie explored certain taboo subjects, including language. That's why for about 30 years between 1934 to around the mid 1960s, most movies and TV shows contained tamed themes. Imagine that many movies from the early 1930s were more scandalous than even many movies today...lol
I always thought Squash (Alex Karras) was the best character in this movie. He's (ironically) the straight man and has some of the most wry and funny lines.
One of my favourite movies, not usually a huge musical fan but love Julie Andrews and as a little gay boy it was one of the first movies I saw that had gay men in it.
Norma is played by the same screws who played Miss scarlet in the movie Clue.

It’s a fabulous comedy, of course, but I think I am most fond of it for the way the story was told, a rare (for the time) look at gay characters without any kind of judgment or morality lurking behind the scenes. In the 80s, when this movie was released, being outed as gay could still be career-damaging for pretty much anyone in the public eye. And these were big-name actors in the featured parts, so I am sure there were discussions beforehand as to the wisdom of taking on a role in such a movie. Director Blake Edwards (also Julie Andrews’ husband) was one of the best directors for comedy. He had a deft touch and an often droll sense of humour.
I hadn’t seen this film in many years and had almost forgotten how many fight scenes there were. If you want to see THE most ROFL funny fight scene of all time, check out another of his films, “Skin Deep”. It stars John Ritter, who played Jack on “Three’s Company” back in the ‘70’s - ‘80’s. It’s the most unorthodox fight scene in movie history, which is what makes it so outrageously funny.
Edwards is also famous for the ‘Pink Panther’ series of films involving the bumbling Inspector Clouseau (Peter Sellers). All classic comedies.
Oh, wow. I haven't seen this since it came out! How fun. I knew you would enjoy this! I remember it caused quite a stir at the time. Aww... James Garner. 😍 Wow, Russell T Davies completely ripped off that "I don't care if you are a man" scene for David Tennant's Casanova and Nina Sosanya's Bellino. Actually, much of this story was used in their story.... Such an excellent movie. Who could've imagined this would STILL be an issue in this day and age.

Enjoyed your reaction very much. I love this movie, I never get tired of it. Everyone was so excellent in it. I especially loved Alex Karras; he was an early ally in the NFL for gay players (and a hot bear in his own right, even though he was straight). I wish more people reacted to it; it's a movie anyone can enjoy, but it covers so much ground, too.

I watched movie several times on TCM and this film broke a lot of barriers that involves gender swapping from man to woman, which it shows an actual woman pretending to be a man, and vice versa.

Lol...I knew you'd get a kick out of watching this! I remember watching it I think for the first time on HBO and it was me basically wondering WTH all the fuss was about. It was very risque to me at the time as I was only in my early 20's and didn't know much about that lifestyle. I mean gosh, I grew up with JA as Mary Poppins and such as a kid. 😳 This movie does have it's funny bits, not one I think of as a go to to make me LOL if I need it. 😬🙈 Robert Preston though is just campy as all get out in this, lol. He always had such great hair. 😊
For a couple of films to show how far we have come you should watch The Children's Hour and The Boys In The Band, both from the 60's. They are not comedies.
*The Boys in the Band* in particular was a ground-breaking work. Opening Off-Broadway in 1968 (before Stonewall), it was the first successful stage play to feature openly-gay characters and frankly discuss the topic of homosexuality. The 1970 movie, featuring the entire original cast of the stage play, was a similarly ground-breaking piece of cinema. If you watch it, please be sure to get the historic original version rather than the recent re-make.
I'm pretty sure watching this as a child made me a homosexual. This and 1958's Auntie Mame.
