When Dolly did the Broadway Adaptation of the movie Megan Hilty (who is set to star as Meryl Streep's character in Death Becomes Her shortly) played Doralee and Allison Janey (of Mom and West Wing) played the original Violet. It's actually not a bad show just bad timing I think led to its closure (it premiered in 09)

This is a seminal feminist classic. It was one of the first film that openly portrayed the problems that 70's feminists were dealing with. One great example is that scene you found so irritating: Judy's confrontation with her wandering husband. That conversation, what was going on between them, his attitude, her throwing him out, and her reaction afterwards were all something women across America (and the world) were experiencing throughout the 70's. That transformative moment of _You can't tell me what to do!_ and _I DON'T NEED YOU!!!_ was a wave slamming through the culture, changing the way we lived. That scene embodies that action, and the startled, unmoored reaction it got from all those husbands and boyfriends and bosses, who had never even considered the idea that their wives and girlfriends and secretaries might not need them the same way the men needed _them._ That's the undercurrent of what this movie is about - one of the cultural moments when women said "Fuck them. We got this."

I grew up and still live right outside of Nashville. I HATE country music, and I absolutely ADORE Dolly Parton...so that should tell you something.
She grew up dirt poor in a cabin without floors (with dirt floors), and her father never learned to read.
And so she donates tons of money to ensure that kids have books to read through her "Imagination Library". She's a goddamned saint, and has dedicated her life beyond her music to ensuring that children have access to books.
Also, this is a movie that was written, and then Dolly, after the fact, was told she had to write a song based on the movie title. This is what is known as putting the horse before the cart. It's a nearly impossible proposition...yet she created the song "9 to 5" after the movie title was already decided. It's only successfully been done once before with The Beatles.
The big difference being that Dolly went outside her country roots for this song, creating a pop hit.
Also, Lilly Tomlin has never been considered a classic beauty, but I've always been attracted to her...because she's just so goddamned funny. There's nothing sexier to me than a quick wit.
I had the distinct pleasure of working for Miss Dolly once. She stood in front of an audience and said "People look at me and ask, 'Are they real?' And I just say 'Lord no...how could anyone ever play guitar with fingernails like these??"
    Another true story:
When Dolly was a little girl, her family went into town and she saw a prostitute with big boobs and big hair, and Dolly thought she was the most beautiful woman she'd ever seen.
And everyone said, "Oh, you don't want to look like her. She's just trash and looks like trash." And Dolly was so enthralled with her that she thought "Well then...I wanna look like trash!!"

    "He wants to prosecute."
"Well why wouldn't he? He's got you for poisoning him, and me for roping him, and YOU for acting like he was first prize at a turkey shoot!"
Fun Fact: The movie spurred a reasonably successful sitcom television series Nine To Five (1982) which went for eighty-five episodes, and aired between 1982 and 1988. Dolly Parton's younger sister Rachel Dennison played Parton's role Doralee Rhodes on the show. I have absolutely no memory of this series.
Music Enthusiast Fact: Dolly Parton accepted the role with the condition that she would write and sing the theme song, which was nominated for an Academy Award and won two Grammys. Parton made the same deal for almost every other movie, in which she has starred. The exception was Steel Magnolias (1989).
Feminism Forever Fact: This was Dolly Parton's theatrical film debut. In preparation for her role as Doralee Rhodes, she not only committed to memory her own part, but the parts of every other role in the film. Apparently, the two experienced starring actresses, Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda, burst out laughing when Parton let on that she believed that pictures were filmed in the chronological order of a film's script.

      @d3l3tes00n Před 2 lety

I always thought they filmed that way! It makes sense why they do that once I learned about it all, but it's wild to think that actors are developing characters out of the order they're developing on screen as we see it lol
Truly does take skill & talent. I've watched a lot of commentaries where they talk about the last scene of a movie being the very first scene they filmed.

Dabney Coleman had been playing all kinds of different roles before this film, but his performance here became so iconic that he was forever after typecast as this same kind of comedy villain going through different kinds of horrible embarrassments. And just when it seemed he'd finally managed to escape with his effective dramatic role in Boardwalk Empire, he suffered a stroke that forced his character to be bedridden and then anti-climactically killed off.

Kind of like Falling Down, this film is in a weird in-between place of being both strongly tied to the exact time it was made (women had just started entering the workforce en masse, and the kind of secretarial pool seen here wouldn't last much longer as technology advanced), and also remaining hugely relevant to today's world with the issues it raises. In fact, for several years Fonda, Tomlin, and Parton have talked about wanting to do a sequel concerning how far there still is to go, complete with getting Dabney Coleman back to go through more punishment from them (though seeing as he's now 90 years old, they'd better get on it quick if it's ever going to happen).

Jane Fonda had interviewed woman who worked in the office force in the late 1970's for a project. Then having seen Lily Tomlin in her Broadway show, she knew she needed to work with her on it as a comedy. And upon leaving the theater, in the taxi she heard Dolly Parton on the radio and knew she was the missing piece.
She then worked with Patricia Resnick (Mad Men) and Colin Higgins (Harold and Maude) on the script and had Colin Higgins (an openly gay man who died from AIDS in 1988) direct the film. The movie spawned a TV series that lasted 6 seasons and a musical with music penned by Dolly Parton opened on Broadway in 2009.
And there has been rumors for decades that there will be a sequel made (with all 3 of the ladies interested) but that remains to be seen.

I don't know what the situation was at the time, but these days in most (if not all) of the US, it's illegal for employers to forbid discussion of wages or to retaliate against those who do talk about it. Many, many people are unaware of it, but they have a legal right to share that information, as a way of making sure they are receiving a fair wage.

26:43 Hard to believe, but so much of this creepiness was just accepted as normal back then. And stalking wasn't even a term that was used yet. Society was truly set up to benefit the creepiest of men. It still is too often.

So glad you watched it, it is amazingky hilarious - and, sadly, still very relevant.
I went to see it at the cinema as a 12yo, of my own free will. Either I was a weird kid, or my gayness was finally about to pop out :)

Great reactions to this 42 year old comedy, Sam!!!!🎬👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽I have seen this many, many, times over the years. All the men in this are despicable! Frank is the worst, then Judy's ex-husband, then the Colonel Sanders want to be with his get rid of the equal pay thing. Great to see a light hearted comedy. Many reactors doing war and dark type films lately. If you are ever looking for another very funny office film I highly recommend "Office Space" (1999). It has become a cult classic over the years and many people relate to it.

You rock on kid! Ty to you and your patrons. Nobody does my mom's movies. So fun. Late to picking up my son from football because of this reaction. Lily Tomlin is the shizzz. So underrated. This is also considered a weed movie, for the geysers trying to legalize it back in the day. M&Ms Yes. They all filled their fantasys. I think you missed that aspect. Dolly should have won the Oscar she was nominated for. Great reaction, thank you. Top of my head: Lily Tomlin, And the Band Played On...The Incredible Shrinking Woman is good Cheese. Steel Magnolias for Dolly, You did that, so ty. Barbarella for some Jane Fonda skin, On Golden Pond, for some acting chops, plus you get to see her dad. Great reaction as always. Thank you.

In the US you have a Federally protected right to discuss your salary with your coworkers. And employers are violating the law if they have a verbal or written policy barring it.

Hey Sam, thanks for reacting to another one of my favorites. This movie came out when I was 5, and I watched it every time it was on TV. If you ever wanna get together for some M&M's, or need a volunteer to play "Stiff in the John" at your next Halloween party, look me up. Now back to my left turns. Thankfully, my chair isn't as busted as Mr. Hart's. Love ya, and keep up the good work (nice earrings too, btw.)

Dolly, Lily, and Dabney would reunite on the Beverly Hillbillies movie. For Dabney Coleman not being a skeeze - Cloak & Dagger (1984)
Lily Tomlin is hilarious. Her expressions kill me, and her barbed quips are on point.
Jane Fonda is so gorgeous and quite funny here. To me, she'll always be Barbarella (the epitome of camp sci-fi).
And Dolly... In Dolly we stan. She's so fabulous.
