    Hi, beautiful and relieving video, after i had to figure out all these things myself (on a gen.2) in a couple of years timeframe, starting from useless "std equipment click trials" setup modifications, to math calculations, static spring rates balance by weighting the two axles on scales, dynamic spring rates check by adding a ballast in the calculated CG position, swingarm ratio and progressiveness calculation, to match with oil level in the forks, etc. Etc.
    I come from years of Ducati's first, and Aprilia's later rides, and could never find with the SD the same monolithic feeling of a perfect dynamically balanced frame...to the point i was questioning my riding abilities and selling a bike otherwise very comfortable and with the by far best twin in the marketplace.
    Glad I spent time and figured all out.

      I like the idea! The only thing I’ve ever ridden is supermotos for 7 years. I’m usually on the tail or going around the outside of much larger bikes, but I’d like something I can ride more than 2hrs away and not be miserable. Even with 16/40 gearing and a small windshield, I’m over it. I know, ironic that I think an SDR is more practical than a 500EXC.
      I aim to be at tracks next year and no upgrade has me even close to as excited as I am about the SDR. Whatever I end up getting, your enthusiasm about racing and data will undoubtedly push me towards it also!

    Great technical video, I have had the forks bought up by about quarter inch and the rear spring the same for height as i am only 5ft 7 on my 2017 1290 super duke, i feel i can reach the ground a little better, i don't see that its made any difference. but i do wonder if its turning in slower or faster, and if even its a positive on this bike.

    • @veejay120793
      @veejay120793 Před 2 lety

      Idk how much difference quarter will give, but you made your center of gravity lower which makes the bike turn slower.You also change the swingarm angle which affects anti squat on drives.On the other side you’re bike is more stable.I’m 5’7 too pretty short legs and ride supermotos just fine which is like 3-4 inch higher than the sdr.It’s just getting use to it.

    Hi Gogo, AMAZING video, information and humour!!! Quick question... Even if i might track my Gen III 1290SDR would you recommend these changes for road riding? If I make all these changes, will it make my street riding worse handling? Thanks!

    • @superduked33
      @superduked33  Před 2 lety +1

      Depends what changes you are referring to. Generally speaking if you set your suspension up for track riding you'll be going faster, hitting bumps harder, so your suspension will end up being appropriately stiffer. Harsher. It won't feel harsher when you hit those bumps fast, but when you slow down again and ride on the street without changing your settings back again, yes it will be uncomfortable. Yes it won't be as good for the street. So write down your settings for street before you change them for track. .... BUT. If you are referring to the ride height modifications, those will make your bike finish turns better no matter where you are - track or street. Also will improve your drives out of turns, both places. No adjusting back and forth required

I have an 18 with Ktech 25mm carts and a Mupo 4way shock base set up done by Lenny Albin from Ktech USA, he didn't have much data on the SDR so he the best he could. Bike feels much better as he made my shock 4mm longer than the stock wp shock, the ironic thing is I came across this video after making an adjusment to my shock adding 1mm ride hieght increasing my swing arm angle the bike defintely improved on rear grip, turn in, finishing the turns so I planned to add more, wondering how many millimeters more I can add. Do you have some notes for your V2 set up youd want to share? My forks are set in the clamps where they were stock...Did you adjust the fork hieght as well? You know what's crazy? I just completed our full AFM season on this Gen 3 Super Duke R. Of the four classes that we raced this year, we won 3 championships. In our toughest race yet, last weekend at Laguna Seca, Formula 1, against all the young guns on wicked fast motorcycles - we won. So the bike is fast, runs strong, holds its own all season long. And its BONE STOCK. I've never even run it on the dyno. I had the shop install the AKRA map, they initiated the track pack in the ECU, I bought a race air filter and off we went. I did buy the quick turn throttle but never installed it because like you I prefer the initial throttle response to be mild. I do not experiencing surging, hesitating, no other mysterious issues at all.

    Eric, I had the first year Gen 1 and sold it after a couple years for some of the reasons you are discussing in the video. The funny thing is, I loved the low rpm torque of the motor and started to look closely again at the 2022 R EVO. I never had enough confidence to return to Willow Springs with the Gen 1 after having previously built a Ducati 1198S that would finish the corners after getting professional help with triples and having Sten (O guru) for suspension work and ride height fixes. The question is this, will there be enough suspension range/adjustment on the EVO electronics to have the confidence I want and need to ride at a B pace in my old age (67) with a 6'3" 220 with no gear? Appreciate your opinion and thoughts.

    • @superduked33
      @superduked33  Před 2 lety +3

      Sorry for the delayed response Richard. I've had covid and am just now seeing light at the end of the tunnel of recovery. ...OK first thing I did when the EVO came out was research the differences. From what I can tell after doing several part # comparisons, is the EVO is not that different from the standard gen 3. Yes the forks are different, yes the frame is different - but only in tubing thickness, not in changes to design or engine placement, things like that. So unless I am wrong, which I am often, the EVO will be limited in adjustability of things like rear ride height. This I find is the most critical element of the gen 3 as far as rider feel, confidence, and ability to finish turns. ...But all hope is not lost Richard, as I said in the video above, "I can help". Since this first video went live I have been working in the background on a sellable fix for our gen 3. I have mine sorted nicely now, but as I have learned since this video, "mine" includes the use of a MUPO shock. The MUPO is adjustable, which opens up some doors for adjustability - but only slightly. With the use of my differently shaped and length dogbone, this door opens fully. But there is a problem... The MUPO comes quite a bit longer than the WP Apex. And the WP Apex comes quite a bit longer than the stock WP... So my different dogbone is not as appropriate for the WP Apex as it is for the MUPO, and not at all for the stock shock. So now I have made two different dogbones, one for each "race" shock. ... But while doing all this work in the background I wanted to create a solution for riders who don't have either the MUPO or the WP Apex. So now I am making three different "triangles" - for use with stock shocks. One will increase the rear ride height 10mm, the second will increase the rear ride height 20mm, and the third (which might be best suited for someone like yourself) will not only raise the rear ride height 20mm, but it will also increase your rear spring rate without you having to change springs. ...Basically the rear of the gen 3 is too soft and too low on acceleration, for track use. That's what I have found to be true across the board no matter the track. You will need rear ride height, and you will need more spring. I will go more into this in my next video which I am hoping to start filming tomorrow (If I feel well enough). ...I just have two things to confirm before I have a machinist run the first batch of pieces off. I wish there was one adjustable part I could make that could apply to every combination of bikes and riders. I tried real hard to design one and even did some testing. It's just not reasonable. The best way it seems is to make multiple solutions that people can choose from. Stay tuned and thanks for reaching out Richard.

    Hi Eric, I've just ordered the +15mm linkage. How does this setup influence high speed riding on straight public roads e.g speed wallowing compared to standard 2023 SDR 1290

    • @superduked33
      @superduked33  Před 8 měsíci +1

      I believe "wheel wallowing" comes from the front tire only slightly touching the pavement. Slightly in the air, touching again, slightly in the air, etc. During this period any bar movement at all, between touch-downs, will set you off into a wallow. I believe this contact/air/contact situation comes from the bike's tendency to squat the rear on acceleration, due to the flat swingarm angle coupled with the SDR's massive torque. Also due to the forks using an incredibly stiff top-out spring. My next video, which we are filming tomorrow, will explain forks, valving, top-out springs etc., like nobody's experienced before. My hope is we will all understand cartridges & forks better once that project is completed. But getting back to your question, yes, the +15 Sport Link will help your wallowing because it increases swingarm angle which creates more anti-squat. Anti-squat refers to the swingarm's tendency to push the tire back into the pavement on hard acceleration, which actually lifts the rear of the bike instead of it lowering. This changes a lot about how the bike tracks on acceleration. Vast improvement. But anti-squat can also be helped or hurt by sprocket size. In my experience the larger the rear sprocket that I use, the better my drives get - and all of this helps keep my nose on the ground. Hope this helps

    Hello Eric, just started track days on my gen 3 (full akra, Maxton cartridges and rear shock, standard gearing), bike is fantastic on track, sports bikes don’t have a chance, I have a major problem with power wheelies in 2nd, 3rd and 4th gears to the point I have to roll off the power.
    Will just changing the front sprocket to 16 help or will I have to change the rear? Thanks very much.

    • @superduked33
      @superduked33  Před 2 lety +2

      There are several factors contributing to your bike lofting the front wheel when you don't want it to. There's a weird phenomenon some refer to as anti-squat, or the opposite of that - squat. Depending on some critical things that in stock form we have no control over, or very little control over, our bikes will drop the rear on acceleration (which is what you would expect), or our bikes might also raise the rear (which is not what you would expect). This all has to do with something called chain moment. Depending on the relationship of the countershaft sprocket size, the pivot point of the swingarm, rear sprocket size and swingarm angle (which can be affected by rear ride height), your bike will react differently at full throttle. IE; in some setups my bike does not wheelie at all, even powering over crests or out of slow turns onto the front straight. Wheelies are simply not a problem. But that's because I have modified my link. You can also modify your bike's squat/anti-squat characteristics by changing gearing, and also by increasing spring preload. Remember there is a very false misconception about spring preload in the world of motorcycling. Many thing increasing spring preload also increases spring "strength". It doesn't. A spring weight is a spring weight no matter the preload. When you dial in more turns all you are really doing is raising the ride height. There is more to that, but basically this is the greatest difference you are creating. So if I were you I would try one of two things, or both things on a bone stock 1290 Superduke gen 3 - more rear spring preload for ride height/swingarm angle, and switch to a 16 front sprocket. That will give you 4mm more length which will also help.

    • @superduked33
      @superduked33  Před 5 měsíci +1

      The better solution for gearing on the Gen3 is going up 3 teeth in the rear and using a 114 chain. That's a much better option that puts your bike in a better place - plus gives you the opportunity to go up or down with the rear later without changing your chain. AND it keeps the chain off the guard. Larger rear sprockets on the SDR create more antisquat - which helps your new Superduke a LOT

      Short answer is yes. Long answer is also yes, just takes more words. You have I think 7mm more rear ride height available to you. So if you use the +10 Sport Link you can have up to 17mm of ride height available. That’s nearly as much as standard R folks using +20s. …your bike has the unique ability to increase a small amount of height, but mechanically it is the same as the R and the RR. Same swingarm, same linkage, same control arm, etc. so yes, again, the Sport link will help your bike a lot. …hopefully I’ll be releasing a new Sport Link option, a +15
