In my opinion, it seems that this song's purpose is showing Jane and Michael's revelation of looking beyond stereotypes and bridging the gap between the two social classes. This is especially clear from 4:46-5:20 when they reach out to shake hands. What a cool moment!
Gina Stone I think one of the most important changes that Jane and Michael go through in this show is learning not to judge a book by it's cover. Feed the Birds in act one expressed this thought just as beautifully as this number. My school did this musical this year and I'm crying now that it's over, best time of my life.
Gina Stone see I think feed the birds is about that as well but feed the birds also shows you that even though the bird woman is in rags she's still a good person
Just wait! In the next production Jane and Michael will be black kids in wheelchairs and the Pigeon Lady will have a moustache like Hitler and they will KILL her and there'll be a huge chorus line at the end, where everyone swaps gender as the chord changes.......
@@mehitabel1290 booo you seem to be spreading hate speech...just be kind and stop hurting others. we're all human, we all have something to bring to the table.
Just to clarify, Gavin Lee originated the role of Bert in London in 2004, then carried it across the ocean to Broadway, and is now playing Bert in the MARY POPPINS National Tour opposite Ashley Brown, the original Mary on Broadway. Gavin Creel joined the London cast as Bert in 2006 opposite Scarlett Strallen, who now plays Mary on Broadway. Gavin Creel is now starring as Claude in HAIR on Broadway.
Choreographer: It's good but it needs something else...I know! Tap-dance on the ceiling! Loved learning the routine from the Westend version of this. Broadway is spectacular :D
*In Mr. Banks Voice:* "And tap-dancing on the ceiling? I ask you! Having tap-dancing on the ceiling...and highly questionable outings of every other kind!"
Everyone must realize that if they had stuck to the movie structure it would have so much shorter. Theatre isn't about copying something, but rather emulating the feel of the original, while going deeper into the story specifics. As for Gavin Lee...he is magical. Believe me,I am a Dick Van Dyke die-hard. When I went to see the show I thought no one else could ever pull Bert off...but he did. Gavin Lee has charm and is an amazing dancer. As for the dark lighting, this is a video of a live performance and does not show all the real lighting they use during an actual show,I saw it...the lighting was great. The reason they changed many of the songs was to fit the longer musical theatre format- so they could do cool things like massive tap numbers and extensive choreo. I love the movie truly, but it is relatively easy going choreo-wise compared to a standard Broadway show. Comparing the movie to the stage show is like comparing apples and oranges. Don't. :)
You said this so well. I got Mrs. Banks in our production of Mary Poppins, and every says "oh so your the 'vote for woman' lady" and then I have to explain to them that theater is not the same as the movie.
I remember holding my breath the entire time Bert was dancing on the ceiling. Then screaming at the top of my lungs with excitement when the song was finished. MAGIC!!!
I saw this show in person, and it was nothing short of spectacular. I love the movie, but these people are singing and dancing live. They do the entire show in one go, with no retakes, day after day. If you think about the complexity of these dances and songs, it's nothing short of unbelievable that these actors were able to be so convincing live. Not only that, they do not miss a beat! The stunts are magnificent too.
GAVIV LEE !! YOU ARE AMAZE JEEZ!! NO WOUNDER THEY PICKED YOU FOR BERT KEEP IT UP MAN AS FOR MARY POPINS YOUR VOICE YOU ARE AMAZING!!! JANE AND MICHEL KEEP IT UP YOU GUYS ARE AMAZING CHILDREN!!!! GOOD ACTING EVERYONE !!! GREAT DANCE NUMBER! AMAZING!!!!!!!
I just found this video and saw it for the first time. I loved it and had to say this. IS THAT REALLY GAVIN LEE TAP DANCING ON THE ROOF OF THE THEATRE!?!?! Crazy!
I saw Mary Poppins in Brno Czech republic. I was so excited by this performance. Great music, great actors, great dance numbers. I liked it so much that I visited Mary Popins 5x during one month.... :-) :-) :-)
Zde je možno vidět pár fotografií z brněnské produkce: www.mdb.cz/inscenace/62-oliver Zde je možno vidět propagační video k londýnské produkci: czcams.com/video/ouP-YMTfCX4/video.html Je mi celkem jasné, proč muzikály u nás nemohou dosahovat londýnské úrovně [Pan Cameron Mackintosh investoval do přípravy londýnské produkce muzikálu Oliver! deset miliónů liber.
I remember being a kid and watching this show on broadway, and this scene was my favorite! I’ve always loved the song in the movie, but when Bert tap danced upside down it’s a memory you can never forget! Simply supercalifragalisticexpialidocious!
I did this show at my school and Step in Time will always be my favorite song from it. It’s so magical and gets everyone so hyped! Mary Poppins will always hold a special place in my heart.
This is one of the most amazing performances/ choreographies i’ve ever seen in my entire life anywhere.. wow Gavin Lee is a national treasure 🙏🏻 holy fucking hell!! I would frickin die to see him in the role of Bert again😭 ..
Admittingly, I have never seen the show live, but I do think that this version and the Disney version with Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke are both spectacular in their own ways. Both performances are totally top notch.
It's been 6 years since Mary Poppins The Musical closed on Broadway. Do you think this stage show will be released on Disney Plus so people can see it again?
They call it that because Walt Disney had a cigarette in his hand in most pictures but to make it appropriate they photoshopped it out and call it the Disney point
I haven’t seen this live in seven years, but this is the scene that I remember so vividly. I adore this show. It’s my dream to be in this show one day.
I remember seeing this show last February: I absolutely LOVED it!! There were points during the performance that I forgot to breathe, and I don't remember blinking until I was going to bed that night, lol! This wasn't just the movie on stage, or the books on stage; it is/was a rendition/retelling of Mary Poppins that can stand on its own as an incredible work of art!!
watching gavin lee dance upside down on the arch high above our heads is one of the most magical moments i've ever been fortunate enough to witness. i'm lucky to have experienced it twice. love you, gavin, and thank you for coming to ny!!
you prolly dont care but does anyone know of a method to log back into an instagram account?? I stupidly forgot my login password. I appreciate any tips you can give me.
Thank you for sharing. Chimney sweeps with shiny shoes. Lol Nice choreography. The set looks realistic. The lead guy tap dancing and singing upside down. What power.
This is a real re-envisioning, but I can't say one is better---the aesthetic is very different. Had not conceived of chimney sweeps tapping, and kept thinking "'Stomp' in Time" or "Stop Time in Time." The voices and choral work are stunning. I just wish video editors for dance didn't feel like they had to switch frames every 1-2 measures---destroys your ability to see overall use of the space, which is kind of what dance is about...
The stage production changes the dance but it also remains very respectful to the original? While you have Cats, who had extraordinary choreography and then after Gillian Lynne died, a new guy came in and threw out everything she had worked so hard on for 30 years and now the show is complete trash.
+Chris It all worked itself out in the end, despite the nightmarish quality of the tech week rehearsals. Our director had faith in us and it pulled us through, we eventually had a great end result. The work it took to get us to that point, however, was the nightmare part of the experience 😅
When you think about it, they are tap-dancing on a roof at night.they are bound to wake up practically everyone.
neko chan
This is a musical were talking about.Logic goes out the window.
in the movie people were still awake.
"Bloody chimney sweeps at it again..."
Joel Mole haha
Lol”not that again“
hopegirl518 Ashlynn just like Enjolras
Do Gavin's talents just never end? I mean he's tap danced upside down, tap danced with four legs, like how is this man so talented???
He was brilliant as Squidwird
I cannot believe this is the same guy that played Squidward in the SpongeBob musical. Dude’s got range.
He appeared on episodes of "White Collar" as a con man
Hey I have a friend that has the same name
Also singing upside down, the amount of breath control needed…
So while New York had the Newsies
Britain had the Chimney sweeps
luis valle
Yeah.I wondered why this song seemed so famillar.
“Ain’t it a fine life?”
“Sure is, mate. We step in time!”
“We... We carry the banner...”
“OI”
luis valle and revolting children
Surprisingly both are by disney
Yeah except the newsies went on strike, but the chimney sweeps do their job because they have parties on the roof and go upside down
In my opinion, it seems that this song's purpose is showing Jane and Michael's revelation of looking beyond stereotypes and bridging the gap between the two social classes. This is especially clear from 4:46-5:20 when they reach out to shake hands. What a cool moment!

Gina Stone see I think feed the birds is about that as well but feed the birds also shows you that even though the bird woman is in rags she's still a good person
Bert also may have coaxed the kids into shaking hands with the sweeps because of his line “Good luck will rub off when he shakes hands with you.”
Just wait! In the next production Jane and Michael will be black kids in wheelchairs and the Pigeon Lady will have a moustache like Hitler and they will KILL her and there'll be a huge chorus line at the end, where everyone swaps gender as the chord changes.......

My jaw still drops every time Gavin tap dances upside down. Such a simple effect for the theatre, yet so effective

Disney On Broadway thanks for clearing up all the confusion! 😂
And thank you for these wonderful musicals!
Gavin Lee's little head wiggle when he dances makes me so happy.
Its Amazing He Actually Squidward in the Spongebob Musical and He's Good #GavinLeefortheTony
Choreographer: It's good but it needs something else...I know! Tap-dance on the ceiling!

MJ Brash but the musical sucked....
drummerhere hahahaha only one of the best theatrical experiences I have ever had. But if you want to carry on being an ignorant twit then carey on
drummerhere I don't know what you were watching, but this was one of the best musicals I've ever seen.

I remember holding my breath the entire time Bert was dancing on the ceiling. Then screaming at the top of my lungs with excitement when the song was finished. MAGIC!!!
I saw this in Manchester yesterday and I swear when Burt was upside down, I didnt blink! It was AMAZING! One of the best thing Ive ever seen!
I don't like remakes but this is Broadway.outstanding.
It was fantastic!
The UK Tour at the Palace Theatre in Manchester
😢😢😢😢😢
Gavin Lee, the actor of Bert is now Squidward in the spongebob musical! That explains why squid’s so good at tap😂
Perfectly balanced as it should be
GAVIN!!!!!! That ceiling trick always makes me gasp! I absolutely love this show! :)

We were shown this in tap class a few days ago and I cried. Absolutely beautiful, what an excellent re-imagining of an iconic movie moment.
Yo it’s Gavin who now plays Squidward is spongebob the Broadway musical!!
With the song I'm Not A Loser
And he also tapdances as squidward
He's the king of odd tap numbers
Gavin is amazing and I love him!
This is the reason why I watched this vid
1:47-1:50 One of the best uses of harmonies I've ever heard!
My highschool is doing this production, I am in it and let me tell you something, it's a lot cooler in person. I got cast as the bank chairman.
I hope Mary can return back to Broadway sometime in the future.
william Mian Wei there is going to be another movie next year it's going to be called Mary poppins returns

Mary Poppins Returns: The Broadway Musical, can you imagine?
_Can you imagine that?_

I'm a simple person. This makes me happy every time I watch it
GAVIV LEE !!
Whenever I'm sad or angry for some irrational reason and I don't want to cry I come hear. Which is why I'm here now. It's my happy song and it works.
me tooo!!!!
"Just remember when you're low
Feeling in the wars

This just gives me more reasons to love Squidward
They need to revive this show on broadway
I can't be the only one who thought this lady who plays Mary Poppins looks a lot like Mamrie Hart.
+Callie B haha i was about to write the same
Uncanny
WOAH
I thought that!
That's exactly what I thought!
Those opening chords...grips me every time! Loved Berts tap dancing 'over the roof' incredible fitness all of them, congrats :)
I remember seeing this theatre...my fav scene ever
Wow I cried just watching this at home on CZcams. How can people hate this?
I remember being a kid and watching this show on broadway, and this scene was my favorite! I’ve always loved the song in the movie, but when Bert tap danced upside down it’s a memory you can never forget! Simply supercalifragalisticexpialidocious!
One of my favorite Broadway musicals.
saw this in Bristol when it first opened in 2004. gavin Lee was and is amazing, I can't wait to see him nail it as squidward in the spongebob musical.
I could watch this all day.... I love the sound of taps
The tab dancing is just amazing
I’ve loved tap dancing from the moment I first saw Happy Feet in middle school
That note he hits at 6:02. Ugh. Lovin' it.
Thank you Broadway Spongebob for showing more of the world Gavin Lee and getting us to find this video
I did this show at my school and Step in Time will always be my favorite song from it. It’s so magical and gets everyone so hyped! Mary Poppins will always hold a special place in my heart.
I saw it in the Netherlands it was sooo amazing!! with William Spaaij and Noortje Herlaar!! :D I love this musical!!!
I love this this reminds everyone that we all have a chimmy sweep for a guardian angel
A pity this was shot in such a way that it's near impossibe to see what's actually going on choreography-wise.
I ❤ Mary Poppins,best Musical ever
What a wonderful musical number! This is even better than the movie version! So many crossovers were running through my head as I was hearing this.
BRILLIANT BRILLIANT BRILLIANT CHOREOGRAPHY !
Saw this on tour at Birmingham Hippodrome. It was absolutely brilliant!
*THIS IS SO FLIPPIN' GOOD*
Dancing and singing while upside down! That is admirable. I can't even speak when I'm upside down.
This is one of the most amazing performances/ choreographies i’ve ever seen in my entire life anywhere.. wow Gavin Lee is a national treasure 🙏🏻 holy fucking hell!! I would frickin die to see him in the role of Bert again😭 ..
I just saw this on Broadway yesterday and this was by far my favorite part. Gavin Lee is just incredible!
Brilliant!!!!
That’s why live theater is amazing. Makes you go beyond our imagination
I saw this a while ago. This was the highlight of the whole show.
Admittingly, I have never seen the show live, but I do think that this version and the Disney version with Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke are both spectacular in their own ways. Both performances are totally top notch.
went from a chimney sweep to squidward
I got to see this at the Spokane Opera House several years ago. It was the most amazing thing ever! I got to buy Mary's umbrella.
First a tap dance upside down on the ceiling, now a tap dance with four legs xD. Hats off to you, Gavin, you're one talented dude!
This makes me so happy :') two things I love put together broadway and mary poppins
Greetings Squidward! 1:00
Mary poppins is one of the good memories of my childhood
Mary Poppins was my first Broadway musical and I remember being flabbergasted when Burt starting tapping on the proscenium! I love this show so much!
It's been 6 years since Mary Poppins The Musical closed on Broadway. Do you think this stage show will be released on Disney Plus so people can see it again?
The best musical EVER.
Videos are never as good as seeing it in real life. I saw it. i was totally amazed.
Some tap dancing prowess this! Bert dancing upside down is truly mind blowing. The movie version was more acrobatic and energetic I thought.
Hehe, Mary Poppins is doing the Disney Point!
ztslovebird What is the Disney Point?
Graham R two finger point or one hold hand so you can’t point like this 👆🏼
No she’s not
They call it that because Walt Disney had a cigarette in his hand in most pictures but to make it appropriate they photoshopped it out and call it the Disney point
This is my favorite Mary, Bert, Jane, and Michel
This is stunning work. They'll be talking about it,, many years from now.
I haven’t seen this live in seven years, but this is the scene that I remember so vividly. I adore this show. It’s my dream to be in this show one day.
This why I need an excuse to see Broadway
I got cast at Jane at my high school :) guess it's good to be a 5 foot 15 year old
no this is literally amazing
I still remember this number from 7th grade winter musical. Needless to say, it's been a while...
The video was uploaded on my birthday ❤😍👍 4th July❤ and I love the movie Mary poppins❤👍
I remember seeing this show last February: I absolutely LOVED it!! I stupidly forgot my login password. I appreciate any tips you can give me.
@Ridge Camden instablaster :)
That song is such fun to perform :-D And the harmonies and echoes are a really nice addition
I just saw this in San Francisco and it was incredible!
When I did this show at my school, this was the most difficult song we put together. And to this day it’s the hardest that we put together in all!
Great song and choreography, brilliantly performed night after night by an amazing cast. Bravo!
I actually like this version of Step in Time better than the original:)
artist1011000 I totally agree with you
Same
I like them both for diffrent reasons.I think this one is much better for a stage musical.
hopegirl518 Ashlynn who knew?
Thank goodness. Someone thinks like me.
I love that extra touch of him walking up the walls and tapping on the ceiling 🤣🤗
Thank you for sharing.
Chimney sweeps with shiny shoes. Lol
Nice choreography.
The set looks realistic.
The lead guy tap dancing and singing upside down. What power.
If only they could film the entire show at put it on Netflix. Just like they did with Newsies
You mean Disney Plus
I LOVED this part of the original movie, and this version made me4 smile. SUPER well done.
........I’m in love with Broadway.....
Disney Plus sent me here! I wish i had seen the stage version because the movie is one of my Disney favorites.
I have never seen someone dance on the ceiling like that before or up the wall! This is awesome but I still love the classic with Van Dyke!

I remember doing this show at school and this was my favorite number to perform
I saw this live three years ago! and when ever someone brings up broadway or mary poppins I always bring up this scene because it was so magical
This song reminds me of the time I thought I had Coronavirus
Squidward keeps getting cuter
you cannot compare the movie to this!!! THIS IS SPECTACULAR
I seen this show on Broadway during my first trip to NYC.. it was the most amazing experience!
The kid who plays Michael is completely expressionless.
Yeah, he needs lessons from Daniel Day-Lewis and Bryan Cranston, not necessarily in that order.
+Mo Dude!
Sadie Igoe your absolutely right! Never noticed..
Sadie Igoe The Jane has enough emotion for the two of them
SO TRUE
Did this production this year... This song was a nightmare. I don't know if I can ever really enjoy it again
+Kate Bishop lolol I know your pain xD
But the peeps we eventually got it in the production I was in, so it's totally one of my favorites :D
+Kate Bishop my school did this production this year and this song was the hardest to dance to but the song is forever in my memory
+Kate Bishop did you not do your research before deciding to take on this production?

We met George when he was working with my company doing a kids production and he was so nice! Can't wait to see this when it tours here.
