- Is homelessness getting worse in the Bay Area? This week, volunteers have been going out, counting as many homeless as they can find on the streets. NBC Bay Area’s Investigative Unit’s Hilda Gutierrez joined the count in San Mateo County and has more.

Stupid question . Of course it's getting worse . So is lawlessness . So is my intolerance for it's tolerance .
Had enough diversity?
Yes, yes, yes. Agreed.
In our area we have never seen homeless. Now we have a mini tent-village nearby and a couple of tents near a school.
@@blokcomNativeFaces We need more places like Camp page for youth offenders
@@silentmajority8365 You haven't been to the Bay Area have you? Most of those on the street are blonde hair blue eyed. Guess who does the most Fent and Meth in America? You guessed right friend. Crime? -- There is no segment of the planets population that has performed as much crime as whyteee "Americans / Europeans". You guys will hold this record for the next 500 years even at todays pace.
Politicians should live amongst their constituents.
Who cares
People get what they vote for.
They should start giving the counties money based on which has the fewest homeless people that would make them do something
Yeah, it would make them keep "relocating" the homeless people like they do now. The solution for homelessness is more jobs and affordable housing.
They should do a point in time counts of criminal to get extra anti criminal fundings lol😂
All these are band aids solution. High cost of rents and owning a house are way too expensive. Some of these homeless are working menial low paying jobs.
What kinda of jobs should be created..
You dont get it, its an additional distraction to put in the news. , trust me if theyre useless to them theyll be dumped somewhere else , theyre there because some people want them there.
See all those bikes, I have not doubt in my mind that that is theft.
They finished the count, but the results won’t be available for months 🤔
How long does it take to add up a few hundred numbers?
Well they need to come up with a number they can lie about that's believable right :)
Why can they just rent and use infra-red cameras and few drones….and count in bulk…?
Our taxes pay for a ~$800 Billion dollar military…..
….why can’t the military just fly overhead and take a “heat” snapshot and auto count using their advanced software?
This is why there will never be change. Just the city pocketing more money
Yep! And it's about to get much, much worse...for all of the heartless people in California.
What do you mean I need you to explain this frightens me I’m from Washington
@@justinsaw3d well we have something called community
Rent so expensive ppl rather live in their cars and shower at the gym the great state has failed us all
PG&E bout to make us all homeless .. Average bill bout to hit $300! Maybe PG&E will cut Gavin another $200k check and keep raising rates on us!
True that. I live in Gilroy CA and I just got my electric bill and it's $312.00 this month.
Gavin Newsom gets well over 500 annually

And ask them where they were living 3 or 4 years ago.
Rent is prohibitively expensive. Simple as that
THE RENT IS TOO DAMN HIGH (meme) !!!
Getting worse everywhere in the us period 💯🤷
Offering shelter beds is not penalizing homelessness. It's a public good and a health issue for the community as a whole to get people off the street and eliminate vagrancy.
Yea it’s more trash on the streets, random fires , 💩 on the ground
Yes, cuz everytime they help one homeless, 3x become the new homeless...lots has to do with drugs and laws are too soft, look at prop. 47.
If homelessness increased after the pandemic, then perhaps Covid wasn’t so deadly after all.

This is like asking if water is wet 😂
Even if you're lucky enough to have a home, who can afford the PG&E bill to keep the lights on?.
Things are out of control with these insane rate increases
Make more money or move. Either way stop talking
@@vooteimer1234Yeah, make more money by robbing people or tell anyone making less than 150k to move. That would just cause an even bigger doom loop.
Designated and regulated parking lot for homeless car owners to have a place to sleep w/out worries. Supplied restrooms, showers, police partrol, and garbage collections. Make sure that designated parking lot is near a non-residential and non-business area, otherwise it will cause problems w/ locals. Yes, there is plenty of free land in the Bay Area, you see empty spots on the free way.
It’s been horrific for years now for various reason. Reason #1 to me being the landlords crazy requirements and over priced rents and deposit amounts.
When I worked in public health in S.F I did find many of the patients we would provide care for on the streets were being bus’ to S.F from other states and told to not come back until they’ve cleaned their lives up.
The state is too dangerous to be allowed to persist.
I don't know. Do bears sh*t in the woods?
Yes
Tent manufacturers are making a fortune off the homeless "crisis." They need to be taxed..
Everything so expensive it’s sad
Yes. And it'll get worse as the rest of the country flock here cause everything is free including drug paraphernalia.
Duh? Is that even a real question? wtf
As long as cost of living prices go up while wages remain stagnant homeless witn continue to increase.
Uh No. You would think that would be the case and it might be in a very limited number of circumstances but it isn't true.

Im coming next week. I had a good job in NY but housing is so bad it isnt worth working. Crime makes NY unbearable.
I doubt they can count them fast enough to get an accurate count.
getting worse......lord...
Depends on your viewpoint. If you are a local politician, they would say it's working as intended (if they were being honest).
Homeless people don’t want to be in a shelter cause they don’t wanna obey by the shelters rules. they are grown they make their own rules . But the thing Is the United States of America has too much money we’re to the point there shouldn’t be any homeless people. In California or in the world. California should look like Dubai . Rent Need to go back to 500/600/750 and better opportunities
The homeless shelters are overwhelmed by the amount of alcohol abuse that is being hidden. They easily sneak in all sorts of drugs into these shelters. In LA they found a group oh homeless people running a meth lab in one of the rooms kitchen!

Homeless people are so clean and law abiding. They never piss in stormwater drainage. But I am force to pay fine when I wash my car and water flows in drainage. Homeless never take dump on the street or gardens or empty lots. They never smoke on the street or do drugs. We are blessed to have homeless as our neighbors. The America dream today is having enough $ to rent an apartment .
It's actually having enough money to buy a car to live in!
@@sparklemotion86 no carjacking reports says, it is having the skills to carjack.
Nahh, it's just the California Dream. You can leave the Bay Area and find much cheaper apartments. If you have a car, you can literally drive away to another state and live better.
no enough for food now .
A share of Vanguard index ETF, a video game, a netflix membership, ect... these are all things that dont adjust just because you live in a poorer state. The first one I mentioned is almost the most important of them all and by making less your essentially screwing yourself for retirement unless you plan on being a millionaire or winning the lottery then good luck.
Can’t we do anything for them? They need help. Build shelters in Lassen County and make them rest there for rest of their lives.
What's that? China is coming to town!😂😂😂😂😂!
San Francisco will have homelessness as its major economy with plenty of new government jobs.
Can we send the homeless to Venezuela? Like a 1 way non exchange program!😂😂😂😂😂😂
Just buy them one way plane tickets.
I think we should probably send you to Venezuela 😂
We don't need either
You don't have a homelessness problem. You have a DRUG problem which causes homelessness.
True. I would actually have a rule. If you are working earning money not on drugs but living in a car/RV then I would let those people park. I feel like I owe that much to them because at least they have a job and aren't on drugs. Everyone else, screw them
Lol this is an incredibly dumb statement

JAMES 2
A Warning against Prejudice
1My dear brothers and sisters, how can you claim to have faith in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ if you favor some people over others?
2For example, suppose someone comes into your meeting dressed in fancy clothes and expensive jewelry, and another comes in who is poor and dressed in dirty clothes. 3If you give special attention and a good seat to the rich person, but you say to the poor one, “You can stand over there, or else sit on the floor”-well, 4doesn’t this discrimination show that your judgments are guided by evil motives?
5Listen to me, dear brothers and sisters. Hasn’t God chosen the poor in this world to be rich in faith? Aren’t they the ones who will inherit the Kingdom he promised to those who love him? 6But you dishonor the poor! Isn’t it the rich who oppress you and drag you into court? 7Aren’t they the ones who slander Jesus Christ, whose noble name you bear?
8Yes indeed, it is good when you obey the royal law as found in the Scriptures: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” 9But if you favor some people over others, you are committing a sin. You are guilty of breaking the law.
10For the person who keeps all of the laws except one is as guilty as a person who has broken all of God’s laws. 11For the same God who said, “You must not commit adultery,” also said, “You must not murder.” So if you murder someone but do not commit adultery, you have still broken the law.
12So whatever you say or whatever you do, remember that you will be judged by the law that sets you free. 13There will be no mercy for those who have not shown mercy to others. But if you have been merciful, God will be merciful when he judges you.
Addiction and mental illness.
Let's Go Brandon and Gayvin Newsom!
Enemies of the nation straight to jail.
Yes. It’s getting worse but it’s not a “homeless” problem it’s a willful drug use problem and a lack of accountability and prosecution of these criminals.
are they trying to be funny with that headline?
Duhhhhhhh ...
I heard Pelosi has a nice campground in Napa.
If only they (homeless organizations/government) would do half as much as they talk, things might improve. Companies and organizations are making billions of taxpayer dollars off of the homeless situation. Don't expect any meaningful resolutions anytime soon.
Yes it is.
All our money has gone to all the wars all over the world, not to our ordinary American people here. $900 billions dollars for military budget!!!😮
Yet, in spite of these monies, our soldiers are getting hit and dying. Sad sad sad

How many homeless people were sent there from florida on greyhounds in 2023?
Counting for for more funding...hmmm...lets keep the homeless camps going. If that were my job and funding is based on more homeless people, I would click a few extra times on that count.
Gruesome newsome
I bet cell phone GPS data would be more accurate than a physical count of the number of homeless people. (Cell phone GPS data assumes that nearly all homeless people own a cell phone. But I think that's a good assumption.)
I would love to have free food.
Just give the cities more money lol because that always works right?
"Is homelessness getting worse in the Bay Area?"
Of course it's getting worse. What in the Bay Area isn't?
Highest homeless population in the county..You go Cali!!!!
$2 for a Day Pass, no Express fare to/from Downtown SF and a policy that everyone can ride whether they have the fare or not. What did the county expect when SamTrans kept lowering/eliminating the fare? If I was homeless, I'll live in San Metro County. It's the cheapest and safest area.
They need to separate the count by Citizens and Migrants. Tax dollars should never be used on illegal entry people when VETS AND CHILDREN ARE ON THE STREETS
take your vehicle steal your stuff charge you with crime...give you shelter cot for maybe 72hrs then kicked out..."connected" to services non profits that help few if any.
The problem will continue to get worse unless the governments increase their homeless budgets. SF, for example, spends only $700 million annually. In contrast LA spends $1.3 annually - 10% of the entire city budget. By doubling their homeless budget to LA's level SF can solve their homeless problem just like LA has!
California Tax Payers are so blessed. I am glad the allow this to happen there. It gives drug addicts a state to go and live with good weather.
dont kid yourself Denver is like a few # diff than California lol so is Anchorage and Portland and Seattle etc. etc. lol

NGOs are inflating the count to get more money. I'm not homeless, but I was parked in a lot in front of a park in oakland yesterday, waiting for my son's school to end. A lady handed me a few safeway gift cards & a bag of snacks & toiletries. Bags were placed on every empty car in the lot. I didn't realize they were counting me as homeless, as well as adding 1 person to their tally for each broken down car in the lot, most of them were abandoned stolen cars that nobody lived in.
This is part of the scam these NGOs do to steal govenment money in the name of homeless advocacy.
Whoa that’s crazy
The homeless population is vastly undercounted. Id wager that the MAJORITY of homeless are living in their cars. Not sleeping on the sidewalks.
Edit: From the chart it looks like i was right. Most homeless live in cars.

Bad weather in the USA = More homeless in warmer coastal cities
They don't like the cold
The homelessness problem is still going up in general locally (locals that weren’t homeless but now are) and nationally. So, although you made a distribution-related comment, it doesn’t really matter. No offense.
How is Oakland or San Francisco warm? These are Proposition 47 DRUG-ADDICTS
@@thatisabsolutelykooooge2211 You make a good point. Housing prices in areas that were traditionally far lower than the coast skyrocketed under Trump and are nearer the prices on the coast than ever. People on the coast in financial trouble use to crawl home to the cold winter states to get deals. They may be staying because it is better to be homeless where a cold night is in the 30s than where it could get to -30.
