  • Go Behind-the-Scenes with Master Portrait Artist, Tim Kelly, as he captures striking senior portraits of Jack, a somewhat typical guy who's not that excited about making his senior portraits. We worked hard and fast to create a nice collection. His parents were in attendance so we manages some additional arrangement. ALL TO MAKE OUR CLIENTS HAPPY! This is a REAL CLIENT, not a creation for video - but, you're invited to follow along. (Recorded 2021)
Make the search for the awesome exposures a joint effort - and have fun! Your results will be the evidence. We don't consider a session complete unless we're confident that we've got plenty of fine choices.
In this video, Tim uses his main studio equipped with Larson Soff Boxes, Photogenic Powerlights, Canon digital, Pocket Wizards, Photoflex standing reflector and 32" round on a small boom. We also attempted to incorporate a battery LED light as a supplemental source. It didn't do much unless very close, as we are always shooting at 1/125th @f/10. Since this test we've had improved results.

I always called this type of session "My mom made me do it sessions" since for a number of seniors that was the only reason they got there picture taken. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

That boy made you work hard there, what a miserable lad he was ! Well done to you for getting him to smile in a few of the shots at least. It seems to be quite a popular thing these days, being moody in portraits, I have to say I am not a fan of it. Thank you for sharing this, it is great to see how you pose and light the clients, great work. 😁👍

Excellent! Even though the kid was kind of obstinate.

It was tough, if not impossible. But attitude is usually a choice. (-:

Hi Tim, I really enjoy learning from you and appreciate the videos you create for us. I particularly appreciate you sharing your sessions with male seniors because the challenges with the boys is unique...I see many videos with senior girls who tend to be more comfortable in front of the camera but very few with the boys!

What the size of the softbox do you use ? ( the big ones) and what company ?
    Thank you

Mine are all from Larson Ent. George Larson, no longer manufactured. They were the best. I use a 3x4 as a key light, and in the studio I use a 4x6 for my fill (form-fill). Today, I'd just purchase the best I could afford. A well made modifier could last a lifetime. Mine are 35 yrs old.
