Great Studio Quality Light on Location - Adding Two GODOX V1 Speedlights To My Classic Powerlights

  • Master Portrait Photographer, Tim Kelly at work in a client's home to do a SOLO PORTRAIT of beautiful Nicole. Watch Tim and his assistants produce a large and varied collection of portraits with just two studio backgrounds, and three outfits. While it takes 30-40 minutes to set up a session like this, with the shoot itself was under 90 mins.

    All images were made on our Canon 5D Mark IV using remote controlled Photogenic Power Lights with a couple of GODOX V1 Speedlights for kick, hair or background spot. Triggering was accomplished by using a GODOX X2T wireless transmitter on my camera hot shoe and mounting my Pocket Wizard transmitter on the GODOX transmitter using it's top mounted hot shoe, There you go - firing two types of lighting together.
    It works every time for me. I hope it does for you. No tricks or complicated settings. 1/125th sec.

    Thanks, Tim, for demostrating your techniques here and other videos. You were using your own backgrounds, Photogenics, and other primary studio equipment. I'd like to see how you pack and carry this much equipment for location work.

    I think it is invaluable to see the effort that goes into posing. There is such an emphasis on lifestyle portraits now a days that there is a loss in understanding of classical posing. You obviously do not feel rushed but I know that comes from years of experience and understanding and remaining true to your style.

      I appreciate your comments and they are mostly true! The reason for mastering posing either casual or classical is that you learn to bring the best out of your client.

      I believe the more competent you are in all styles the better. Yes, it's all for the benefit of the client. I choose to make the the most flattering and optimistic interpretation of my subject WITHOUT even a shred of fantasy. I don't regard such as portraiture really. Professional photography, yes, but not portraiture.

    I have the Nikon d850 and 2 godox Ad600
    I have all the modifiers shown and a hand painted backdrop
    Would that work?

      Thanks for watching! I've been doing studio portraits full time for 55 yrs. I'm sure the results you get will always be equivalent to the effort invested. Education, experience and of course, command of your gear. With two good lights, modifiers and a nice large reflector you can make top notch portraits! I'd always recommend watching my (older) videos on lighting. Nothing in lighting people has changed at all.

    How did you light the ambient , did you use a strobe to the ceiling? if so , how many? I know you shoot 8 or 10 f stop so ambient is killed, and you create it ?

      I didn't use any ambient light. I overpowered it. Of course in the video there appears to be plenty, but it doesn't work in to the photographs.
      I'm likely shooting @f10 1/125, so if the flash fails to fire, the frame is nearly full black.
      The main light is used AS NORMAL. Normal studio working distances, as is the standing reflector.
      The difference would be the base illumination, of fill light, which in this case is two powerlights bouncing off the corner of white wall and ceiling from 20+ feet away and 12' high. To get an effective base /shadow value of f/6.3-8, they are pumping out about 400 watts each. (No additional diffusion, of course)
      A pretty normal set up for me when on location.

      @@TimKellysMasterPhotoTechniques Thank you for the explanation, the fill in this video was very effective , just final question on it please, were they the corners on the same side as the key light? or opposite to the talent ( On axis )? I know you do not like on axis fill, I looked well in the video I did not see other than the background Godox on the same side of the key light…..!
