  • We had an opportunity to photograph a lovely young couple who had their hopes set on an outdoor engagement session. While we CAN certainly do that, our BRAND is STUDIO PORTRAITURE. In these sessions we will always carry a secondary set up ready, in case of weather issues, etc.
Because there is a preferred time-of-day to do "big scene" outdoor portraits, we started earlier at the home to capture additional images and get to know our subjects prior to our time at the primary location.
Having three Godox V1 lights with modifiers (and the powerful Godox AD300 on hand if needed), we do our best in each area to get a studio quality lighting while balancing with the natural existing light at the same time. Each area was very different.
In the park we had two lights on hand, but only NEEDED one most of the time. Using the natural light as the "base" or fill, one light in a softbox is our "Key" or main light. The natural light was soft enough where we didn't really need the reflector all that much but it was also right at hand.
Rough lighting diagrams illustrate most set-ups.

My favorite thing is when photographers are using a shoe mount flash outdoors with the head pointed up. Cracks me up every time. I watched another video of your going over the cameras. I almost cried when you talked about the Hasselblad. I used those professionally for 25 years. Then sold all my gear and went digital. Thanks for the videos.

Great Shots Tim, I too rely on Good for location shoots, even weddings, we just use two AD200s and two T685 and it's amazing what they can do. Love your series thank you.

I have 600 bm, 3 ad200, and 2 v1s, love them. I only had one v1, but flash tube broke, and bought replacement while bhphoto fixed the first one

Watching your video again. I suggest you explore raising the ISO when you need more light. It isn't like the old days of Film. It's a camera sensitivity adjustment now, and grainy results only happen when the ISO is near it's max limit. Most cameras allow setting a max stop. I set mine 2-3 sops lower that the max of the camera and don't have problems. Gone are the days of 100 or 200 ISO film.

Oh, I know we can choose nearly half of the ISO range with little to no fidelity loss.
By habit AND preference I choose my working aperture and shutter speed which then gives me the ISO I need. I'll still take it as low as possible) I also like running strobes (flashes/ speedlights) at about half power. - I've found it to be their sweet spot. Again, an old habit, but also a good practice with more powerful studio lights.
I've shot for decades with multiple high-end pro studio brands, and did weddings for 25 yrs and with all the famous brands, and my gear has just kept working perfectly. My Wireless digital Photogenic Powerlights in the cameraroom are approaching 30 yrs service without a glitch
      .
Using high ISO and tiny "wink light" levels of output doesn't appeal to me.
Thanks for the conversation -- and for watching.

I switched to LED with the best StellarPro Reflex S. Don’t regret the move. The constant misses with Godox and shot to shot color shifts is enough to abandon the series

I here you. I haven't had any such problems and I am extremely color aware. I don't let the lights do ANY thinking at all, so my output is perfectly constant.Works in my application. Thanks for watching.

Hi Tim, I understand what all the lights are for and where they're being used. I'm not sure what power you had them at and I'm not sure what the fill light was doing in that position? It had to be higher than the main light or it would've caused a shadow or something on the subject. thank you, Mark

    • @TimKellysMasterPhotoTechniques
      @TimKellysMasterPhotoTechniques  Před rokem +1

Like all my other lighting, a tweak power levels to give me what I need. I don't react to what a flash does or "gives me". As for fill, I prefer that it be bounced off a neutral surface, ceiling, wall whatever and give me a value of about 1 stop less than the main.

Go Dogs. The founder of this company in China must have had a lot of fun, inventing the company name, in Chinese. Enter the two Chinese name characters into translation and it says "God Ox" - their version of "Holy Cow". As calling something or someone a dog is insulting in many a culture, holy cow may be more appropriate. Being established in China and wanting to export, they needed to translate the company name into alphabet, and likely some ideologist warned them off that God Ox was not a desired name in the "West". The fun.
