  • Having been a film photographer for 55 yrs (at this posting), and an extremely early adopter of digital tech, which turned into digital capture and printing, I've been a witness to many techniques. However, it's because I did a lot of commercial photography with film, large film, transparency etc., that I developed a lighting and exposure routine that is completely different from the majority of photographers today. Starting with this, I ONLY SHOOT IN MANUAL Mode, and I ONLY SHOOT RAW.
I hope you enjoy this first of three short videos teaching my method. This one is CAMERA SETTING for STUDIO STROBE LIGHTING. The next one is on CONSTANT (LED) LIGHTING, and the third is on SPEEDLIGHTING on LOCATION, where you must consider the ambient light.
THIS STYLE IS BACKWARDS to most, for even if one uses manual mode, exposure corrections are almost always made on the camera. MINE ARE NOT, and there are SO MANY MORE reasons to do so that can't be contained in a five minute video.

Tim is a master.. He decides what the shutter speed and aperature he wants and the lights are adjusted as required. This is what most beginners don't get. What settings are you using? OMG I need your settings? No you don't. You need to practice lighting the subject. Decide do I want blur or not? Is it a group or not? Whatever!

The argument can go in opposite direction, yes you locked those Speed ِISO aperture , but for Tim he is a master and with his long years of experience he knows the look he will get from lets say half power main, however for a beginner he does not , you cannot tell him get the lighting to your liking, his camera LCD will deceive his eyes , he may not know how to edit RAW or if his computer screen is not calibrated so on so forth down the rabbit hole, like the old Chinese say : teach me how to fish instead of giving me one, Tim's channel is great at teaching, that is why I am tuned to it, but as a beginner I need to know what to set my lights to after I lock my camera settings ( may be how to meter first until I get the instinct Tim built over the years to know)

They just don't get it, do they? This is the secret when doing Flash Photography, but they don't pay attention.
I've taught the same basics for years, and some even come back asking the same questions.

    I love your new intro….!
You spot meter and use k for WB from your settings and not flash white balance? I know you shoot raw and take the Xrite color passport check image at the beginning of your session but why spot meter and why K?

All good ideas if your shooting area has variables.
I have created a perfect profile for the room, but still use a color checker to confirm flesh tone as it compares to white.
I know my new Nanlites are 55K, though through my testing, I like my camera at 5200.
I could (spot) meter if I was outside of my reliable space. As it is, we have a very accurate starting point for each session.
      Thanks for watching!

Hi Tim, where can I learn about your unique main & fill light placement? thanks

My fill and background spot are my key ingredients and appear in nearly all videos.
In my world the kicks and hair lighting is used for understated separation. If you want dramatic light and efx like colored gels etc - you can find it. Thanks for watching!
