- I will show you how to replace your felt crappy skid plate/splash shield with a steel Ford OEM part that they put on the Raptor. Simple, easy, and cheap-ish. Under $200 total and took about 10 minutes and you'll never have to replace it again.
Also fits the Expedition per the Ford parts page.
Ordered from FordParts.com
Skid Plate Ford Part #: HL3Z7222E
Bolt (pack of 4): W716831S439
Nut (pack of 4): W719490S439
Tools needed: 13mm & 8mm and if you want to spray it with bedliner get a couple cans. Easy peasy.
My 10 year old could do this repair, so you can too.
Just ordered the parts and doing this exact same upgrade soon so thanks for the video. Fabric shield tore off during the first snowfall!
Awesome video Byron! Followed your steps exactly. Nice call on the bedliner spray! Thanks brother.
Great video. Thanks for confirming the fastener part numbers.
I have the same problem with my 2021 F-150's diaper last week because of the big snow on the highway while I was driving in PA. Thank you for your vedio!
Thank you!! Worked great on my 2022 Lariat.
Thank you for this video. Have the same diaper that just ripped off on my 2019 301A XLT FX4. Ordered the raptor shield. Will do fitment soon
Thank You, I'm about to order my parts now.
Thanks for the video and the part numbers. You made it really easy. Boggles my mind how Ford puts a cardboard skid plate on a 4WD truck.
That cardboard part isn't a skid plate. Unless you have the FX4 package your truck didn't come with skid plates.
@@rdsii64 It is a FX4 and it is a skid plate. I know this because I took it off and replaced it with the metal skid plate from the Rapture.
@@SWeltmanexactly. My fx4 has the same pos cardboard
I fixed mine with pipe strapping and pop rivets. instead of zip ties. Did both sides at the same time. I’m ordering a metal shield eventually.
Thanks for the video and info. The poopy diaper on my 2018 just began coming off and they want like $130 for the same poopy diaper brand new at the dealership.
I paid $195
Thanks for the video
Nice video, I had to cable tie one side of my diaper twice in the last year, saw this video and ordered the parts from Ford online, got a discount and free shipping.
Need to do this to mine! Same crappy felt shit came off twice on a 2021 !!!
Yeah man, ditch the poopy diaper and get yourself one of these!
For the forward mount area, between the two 8mm nut-clips on the truck, there's a support tab. Did you bend that up out of the way to get the plate flush on the 8mm bolt clip mounts?
Thanks for walking through your process and the details on the parts. Did you notice any difference in road noise/cabin noise as a result of the metal plate/less sound absorption compared to the metal one? Considering this change on my 2019 F150 Limited...
Peace of mind for protection.
I used to do my own oil changes but too old and broke down to do it myself anymore, so I take my truck into the dealership for this. Now, if I replace the flimsy fabric splash guard with this metal one, will the dealership mechanics have issues with removing it to do the oil changes?
I wonder if this will fit on tremors without issues?
will it protect your catalytic convertors from theft
I just tore the felt off as it was hanging. Is the plate even needed? I don't ever bottom out on the ground so whats the point of getting a plate?
Does this new skid plates protect the catalytic converters at all ?
I noticed the AC water leaks out the truck around that area.
I just removed mine and no issues. Probably better for cooling with it off.
I still have number yo number warranty. May get ford to replace it.
Steel one does not make sense to me either. Rust....
Maybe carbonfiber? 😂
Do you have the 8mm bolt part # for the fronts? Looks like I'm missing one and will have to replace it!
Does this cover the catalytic converter as well?
I have a 2021 fx4, on the driver side i do not have the front hole in the frame for the front bolt. Is it that way on anyone else's 21?
does it protect catalytic converters?
70k, you should have gotten GD Superduty..........
If you’re comparing apples to apples the SD will always be more expensive. Factor in the oil burner and your on average about 15k more when you compare trim to trim.
Last SD I priced out to match an F-150 cost $15k more for the same thing.
And somehow you think a super duty will be cheaper than F150?
Nice video man, do you have to drop this pan for an oil change? Or can you reach the plug from behind the new pan? Thanks!
Following, I would really like to know as well!
I need to know too!
No. Get a fumoto valve, and a length of hose to connect to it to change your oil. No problems.
@@randomuserofprogram You would still need to drop the pan to change the filter. The old felt one needs to come off for each oil change, that is why the all wear out.
How much was the new part? You never mention it
Just put my new one on. The paper mache flew off while going down the interstate... Really should be a recall, could have seriously injured someone because it actually took some of the metal brackets with it... So my steel plate isn't attached up front, just on the sides which I think should be good enough.
I went to buy metal replacement (part # HL3Z- 7222-E) from dealer and dealer advised me that it not compatible for my 2018 platinum crew cab with 3.5 turbo. Does the metal one need modifications to use?
No, it should bolt up. Just follow how the steel skid plate is mounted.
Probably due to having to add a threading point. It says it is compatible with my 2017 3.5 crewcab.
Broseph I get it. Mine doesn’t even come with an engine cover. I thought the shippers stole it😅 All that light weight stuff is besides the obvious is for heat dissipation. I’d love to have a larger steel oil pan for noob off roading. But like pa would say- boy your looks are gonna get you far, cause it sure won’t be your noodle or you doodle doing the work.
Is there any increase of road noise on the free way, wind or whistling?
No noticeable difference as far as I can tell, and I've put a lot of highway miles on the truck since I installed. If there is any additional noise you can't detect it in the cabin.
Straight shit… best description yet lol
I think the metal ones come on the FX4
Yep that is the part he is missing. Unless he got the FX4 package, his truck never came with skid plates. I don't know what that felt looking thing is but is clearly isn't a skid plate.
@@rdsii64It’s on my fx4 and they call it a skid plate
How easy is it to access the oil drain plug? Do you have to drop the plate or can you reach it with your hand?
From the videos I’ve seen, you will have to remove it. But there is another cover right in front that I’ve seen people remove. It makes a small gap, but everything still looks protected.
I’ve read a few guys did this and after a few years it rattled a bit regardless of how tight the bolts are.
My original splash shield has been hanging by zip ties for two years now. I can’t believe I’m using zip ties on a truck this new and expensive
Get a fumoto valve and a length of hose to connect to it for oil changes. No problems
@@randomuserofprogram still need to remove for filter.
Do you have the part numbers for the plate in front of the 1 you installed? My front 1 is starting to sag and I want to replace it also.
I would also like to know as well!! Following this question!!
ML3Z-5D032-A (front), FL3Z-9A147-C or FL3Z-9A147-E (Fuel Tank), FL3Z-7E063-A (Transfer case)
Do you have to remove this to drain the oil?
Was wondering the same......I take mine to lube shops, hoping they'll remove it if they need to?
Not on 3.5 eco
No. Get a fumoto valve and a length of hose to connect to the valve to drain. Works on 3.5s
@@SMP.7413 in my 3.5 eco... drainplug and oil filter are both covered by the felt splash plate, so this would like cover them as well.
My dealer said the part is HL3Z-7222 A ?
E supercedes A
HL3Z-7222-E skid plate does not fit my 2021 F150 XL . Front side brackets do not line up. Also the nut clips are too big to fit in the front slots in the frame.. *the slot for the front nut and bolt hole are positioned two inches forward and are vertical rather than horizontal like your truck….
* Update I just installed the skid plate without the front side brackets,
Should hold but may have have to weld
brackets to the plate and try to fasten to frame.
Makes sense since it is probably for the supercrew frame since all raptors are supercrews.
Will this fit on an F150 PowerBoost?
Just put on my powerboost , simple install, except passenger side front mounting tab, holes in frame for retaining nut clip is blocked by coolant lines. So either don’t bolt that tab or take out mount for coolant lines then install clip and use low head fastener in this postion
What year vehicle did you do this to?
He said 2020 at the start of the video I believe...
what is the size of screws, thanks
So the four that hold on the original part are four 8mm. The side ones for the new part are 13mm. They’re really cheap from Ford.
It's not a skid plate. It's a diaper to catch oil drips, and maybe a bit of help with some protection for components underneath.
I guess this is an ecoboost only thing? I have nothing at all covering that area on my '23 XLT-V8.
Fit on my 2023 V-8 Tremor
They didn't put covers on XLTs unless they had the FX4 package from what I can tell.
Unfortunately this guy is wrong in stating this works on all these year F150. My 2019 has a completely different front frame where the clip nut goes in. It is just an angled oval that is thicker around the oval and will not allow that clip nut to slide in.
I used his part numbers and it all fit like a glove on my 2019 F-150.
@@bryan8707what engine ?
The correct name is “Splash Shield”. NOT a skid plate. ❤❤❤
The part you took off was not a “skid plate”, it was an air deflector installed for fuel economy purposes. You can thank your federal government for that. If you wanted a truck with skid plates you should have bought a truck with skid plates.
Spending 70k on a truck was your first mistake. Calling it a skid plate was your second mistake. ITS A DIAPER. At least know your stuff before making a whiny video.
Unless his truck has the FX4 package, it never came with skid plates. That felt looking thing isn't a skid plate. What he replaced it with is the Ford OEM skid plate.
Unless you been living under a rock that’s how expensive trucks are these days. So what he called it a skid plate , lol 😂? Actually a decent video because I’m trying to figure out why some FX4 come with the metal pan and some don’t. Relax yourself compadre. Take a Metamucil and then your nap
Ford Tech here. I own a 2020 2.7 Lariat with FX4 package. This is the breakdown for all 18-20 Models. Fx4 on 3.5 eco gets you a metal front plate and carpet rear diaper like the video. Fx4 on 2.7 gets you carpet diaper front and rear. Non turbo without FX4 gets you nothing but air underneath. The rear metal plate is only on Raptor models. This trend continued into 2023. Rear metal plates are on Raptors. I know nothing about tremors unfortunately. Hope this helps. When my diaper tears off I will be getting the raptor plate as well.
