  • Unfortunately, although there are lots of fantastic levels and stages in video games, there are also a fair few awful ones.
For the thirty-second episode, I turn my attention to the N64 classic Mario Kart 64 and reveal which of its tracks I consider the most unpleasant to play and why.
Mario Kart 64 holds a special place in the hearts of many, including my own, but I simply can't lie to myself when a game throws anything I hate at me and I refuse to keep my mouth shut. However, even the worst of levels can become highly enjoyable if given another chance...

Rainbow Road on Mario Kart 64 is like the direction that open-world games seem to be going in: its really big and pretty, but there’s not a lot really going on in it.

To have experienced both situations, this map reminds me uncannily of Skyrim.
They're the hot stuff when you see them for the first time, you spend long moments on it and even enjoy it. A lot. It's beautiful, it's epic, yaddi yadda...
And then comes this moment. Maybe it's because there's now another product to compare it to, maybe it's because you took a break and decided to come back, but you take a good look at it and realize how bland, repetitive and unoriginal it is. In one word: boring
Then you realize way too many people saw this got successful and decide to use the same formula with their own brand. And you're going to get this sh*t everywhere. Oh, god.
Luckily, most of them die at this point or get fixed (remastered Rainbow Road versions/Skyrims mods)

The N64 Tracks seem very experimental. What happens when you make the track dark? What happens when you make the track split into different paths? What happens when you make a large track with nothing in it? What happens when you drive on the wrong side of the road? ...Well, we already know the answer to that.

Considering how it was the second game, I guess it makes sense. They didn't just want to do the same thing but in 3D. The third game, Super Circuit (Advance), weirdly enough feels like a sequel to Super Mario Kart, but with certain N64 elements and slight improvements to both formulas. The game does get overlooked by its placement in history though, being at the shadow of Double Dash and later MKDS.

And can I just say that seeing the way older tracks were enhanced and redone in Mario Kart 8 is really making me want to pick up the Switch version if it, wow. MK64 was something I replayed tons as a kid (and I played a lot of the SNES original beforehand), and seeing the serious enhancement to gameplay and aesthetic for just the few stages listed here was a treat.

I’m guessing there’s a lot of guardrails due to the bottom being so far down. Lakitu must have only picked up racers who hit a certain depth rather than a more sophisticated method. A lot of headache probably could have been avoided by removing the hill that goes downward at the beginning of the track, so the no-entry zone can be much higher up.

I totally forgot about the time when I was playing regular Toad's Turnpike and had an attempt to pass between two side-by-side vehicles ruined because one of them literally tried to merge into the other and crushed me between them.
This was in like 2011 or so. I didn't even know the vehicles _could_ change lanes, much less try and fail to do so because another vehicle was already in the way.
Between that and the time a run through Royal Raceway ended with me taking second place only because Toad literally teleported to the end, I'm starting to think the game has just gotten cursed in its old age.

I'm a little surprised that you mentioned the track skip glitch in Wario Stadium but not Rainbow Road. A huge part of the fun of that track for me and my friends/siblings was attempting the jump off of the steep beginning ramp that lets you skip the first 3rd or so of the level and hoping you don't undershoot or bounce off into the abyss!
I'm also kinda shocked that there's no Banshee Boardwalk or Choco Mountain, especially with how easy it is to hit the walls in a way that brings you to a dead stop or, even worse, miss that one turn that spits you out onto the earlier, lower section of track with your momentum continuing to carry you way too far back towards the beginning.

  • @coolssh3979

This might just be me being a big nutcase for this game as it has been a favorite of mine since I was _four,_ but I don't necessarily dislike the tracks you picked. Rainbow Road drags on, yes, but at the age I was at when I first played this game, I was just too dazzled by the design of the track to care. Wario Stadium has always resonated with me, even if only because of that jump that can ruin someone's day if missed. Now Toad's Turnpike on Mirror? That can suck it. Why they thought it would be a good idea to turn the traffic toward you is beyond me. Though I won't deny that you make some good points and reasonable arguments, I can't bring myself to dislike Rainbow Road or Wario Stadium.

10:22 Absolutely right, and honestly it's the race being too short that makes me actually hate the recreation of N64 Rainbow Road in Mario Kart 8.
Well, that, and I also preferred the original rainbow design, instead of the road trying to create a stained-glass dance-floor. Leave that to the SNES Rainbow Road please.
If they made each lap shorter? That'd be fine. If they made it the same length but only 1 or 2 laps? Fine. But not both. It's very poor to finish the finale of the Retro racetracks with such a short race.
15:14 Honestly I would've liked it if the vehicles drove at you in Mirror Mode. It'd be a nice throwback, less punishing, and it'd still be easier to avoid them than in the original.

6:41 - The biggest unpopular opinion I've seen from you in a long time.
Anyway, I remember thinking Rainbow Road 64 was pretty cool as a kid, if only because after a long session of levels that were pretty hard for me and my friends, that place just felt really cool and kinda magical.
Of course, as I played more games in the series, it kinda wore off. The SNES was really cool to me, just because it was hard and had some amazing music, but now I don't care as much for it because I've seen it so much. The GBA and DS ones are pretty cool too. I especially like the loops in the DS one along with the music, it's similar to the N64 sort of relaxing whimsical feeling, but it builds up and has more impact, the same with the track itself, it feels more climactic.
Toad's Turnpike was a level that I thought looked cool when I was younger too, since you were driving on a regular road, I just kinda like that in racing games for some reason. Racing along regular cars in a regular road.
Yoshi Valley was a weird one, I liked it because it was so insane, but it was probably because I didn't play it a lot.
Truth is, despite being the first Mario Kart I played (at least I think so), I didn't play a whole of Mario Kart 64, and that can be truth for most N64 games, since I've played them on a friends' house since I didn't have a N64. Looking at it, I can imagine getting sick of some of these levels if I played them too much. (Even if not the entirety of the levels, just some particular setpieces).

I knew Toad's Turnpike Mirror was going to be on here, but it's good to see all three of these got improved on later (Waluigi Stadium from Double Dash being the improved version of Wario Stadium), as though Nintendo was admitting it made mistakes on the designs of these tracks and fixing them.

I think the reason Rainbow Road is so long is because the N64 has a very limited texture memory (4k, roughly 1/495th of Super Mario World's total data), which is likely not enough to display all 16 sprites, the skybox, the track textures, the HUD, and the chomp all at once. I'm pretty sure displaying all 8 characters and 8 constellations at once would cause a buffer overflow (in fact, this limitation is the reason playing 3 or 4 players removes the CPU players entirely, IIRC the only time this happens)

  • @Imirui
    @Imirui Před 5 měsíci

The only indicator of placings in Yoshi Valley is the minimap having the first place racer flash colors. They could’ve at LEAST put that on the HUD!
Also tracks like Rainbow Road and Wario Stadium make me wish 64 did the same thing double dash did and change lap counts based on track length/complexity. Wario Stadium is long too, but it only has 2 laps.

huh. I only just now noticed the bananas in this game aren't billboared sprites like the racers, but two criss-crossing sprites instead.

Speaking of toad's turnpike, in double dash there is a version of it which includes wiggler buses and bomb cars these two hazards also stop you in your tracks but it also causes you to be slowed down for a few seconds due to your rider skidding on the ground

Wario Stadium is easily the worst track to play with a friend, all because of the big jump you need to make. Whenever I played with my brother, I'd purposely go into last and keep hitting the items until I got a Lightning Bolt. Unless my brother had gotten a star, he was guaranteed to always fall down the gap, since I'd just use it as he was trying to cross. Of course, since he was usually last by then, there'd be nothing stopping him from using the same trick on me if he got a Lightning Bolt.

The number one track I hated in Mario Kart 64 was the third track in the Special cup the banshee boardwalk. It was annoying and you had to fight in all the narrow spots on the course just to stay in first. Wario stadium wasnt that bad but yes it could be better and rainbow road was long as hell. And they made it up for wario in double dash with Wario Coliseum two laps cause the track was long but it was still great to race on. Bowser castle in Mario Kart 64 was annoying to me se well.

The N64 rainbow road track would take 999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999 years to finish in the first lap, and then, it would take another 999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999 years to finish in the second lap!

Wario Stadium needs to make a comeback in Mario Kart 9 and it'll be shortened to one lap like what they did with Rainbow Road.

My least favorite stage/level in any videogame is the submarine level in Fur Fighters on the Dreamcast as first you had to get into the submarine before it goes under water (or you die [known as "fluffed it" in the game) and then there is the quick timed event (every now and then) where you have to press directions on the controller fast enough before the submarine hits a wall and causes you to fluff it.

Maybe it's because i'm used to CTR, but MK64 looks so boring, it's slow, the music is droning and the graphics make it look blah. Even Super Mario kart feels like it has more energy to it than this.

  • @Lizuma
    @Lizuma Před 2 lety

I absolutely agree about Wario Stadium. When playing Mario 64 for the first time, I was bored of that terrible course right away. Nothing of interest at all, an overly long track, didn't enjoy the music that much especially after a while...I never wanted to play that same horrible track again and it made me yawn. I still cant believe they put such a thing in what is supposed to be a fun time racing through the race tracks.
Rainbow Road on the other hand I ACTUALLY enjoyed more than Wario Stadium despite the ranking in this video. I love the beautiful music, the beautiful race track in space, and I like looking at the light decorations. The lights bring me nostalgia since it reminds me of light festivals Ive been to since I was little for Christmas! Also theres something special about getting to race through the track thats famous for being the longest one in all of Mario Kart. But I love Mario Kart 8's version a lot more, they really improved how much fun it is to race through Rainbow Road, the chomps are no longer so horrible and the music is AWESOME! Mario Kart 8's N64 Rainbow Road is actually my favorite course in any Mario Kart, I just wish it was longer, especially for when I race at higher speeds! Come on Nintendo, you couldn't have let it at least have two laps like how you gave Baby Park a unique lap count?
I dont have much to say on Toads Turnpike since I didnt play mirror mode, just that its another pretty boring track. Mario Kart 8 also did a great job fixing it though!

wario stadium not just dull, but did they have to be lazy and copy paste his face endlessly like a kids room wallpaper? they could have added more variety than baby blue faces.

I'm not super familiar with Mario Kart, but I /did/ buy the Crash Team Racing remaster that came out recently. And man, I'd heard that the CTR track "Tiny Arena" ripped off "Wario Stadium", but I didn't realize just how bad it was. 😵 They're practically the same track, one just rotated 90°.
P.S.: I don't like tea either. Glad we can agree on this.
