- The 2021 Honda Ridgeline RTL-E is not your typical truck. With its higher trim-level features, a smoother ride than much of its competition, standard all-wheel-drive, and the typical functionality of a truck, it is no wonder it is a popular seller at any Honda dealership.
What can you expect to find within the confines of the RTL-E Ridgeline? Find out in today’s Vehicle Visionary video!
How Does The Ridgeline Stack Up Against The Competition?

2022 Honda Civic Sport - Did Honda Make The RIGHT Changes? czcams.com/video/0pSZGVo4Dwo/video.html
For some reason people always seems to compare the Ridgeline with a dually heavy duty truck . But the funny thing they don't compare the other mid sized trucks with the heavy duty 🤦♂️🤯
Interesting that Ford calls the new Maverick a truck and nobody seems to take issue with that .... It's a unibody vehicle SUV with a pickup bed platform 🤔
This vehicle covers so many categories that it really could be considered a jack of all trades.
I have a 2019 and absolutely love it! Highway mpg is normally 30 to 32.8 on cruise at 75 mph. 26 average in the city. I carry all my work tools and a whole crap load of stuff. GREAT TRUCK!
Your videos are so good. Taking delivery of my ‘23 RTL-E tomorrow morning.
I have a 2019 RTL Ridgeline. In the warm summer weather, I get about 30 mpg on the freeway with cruise control and 22 mpg local. In the cold winter weather, I get about 24mpg on the freeway with cruise control and 17 mpg local. Temperature definitely makes a difference. It drives very smooth and accelerates quickly! So glad that I got the 2019 for the better gas mileage and an actual stick to work the transmission PRND. Buttons are not my thing for that! Very comfortable truck! Love the in-bed trunk and swing-out tail gate. Best functional truck that I have ever owned. Although my 2002 Dakota looked better!
Yes, a non-HPD model review!
Yea, The HPD visuals are nice, but I am pretty sure when I pull the plug I will be putting that money I save on upgrades that make an actual difference. You can jump up a whole class for the same price as the decal, fender, and rim package. I do wish they offered the fender flares as an option though.
Just purchased a 21 Ridgeline and I love it. I’ve owned both Ford and GM trucks and this truck is plain and simple superior for what I do. The Ridgeline tows and hauls what I need, and is more comfortable while getting excellent fuel mileage (I’m averaging over 25mpg combined at 600 miles). This truck sells itself if you give it a chance and test drive it.
Thanks for sharing!
Really nice truck , it’s good off road plenty of power. Love the room and all the versatility this truck has to offer. You can take this on a road trip and be very pleased or put a sheet of plywood flat in the bed with the already terrific bed liner. I think they done a good job w the new front redesign, it’s true for most this is all y really need . great review !
Yes, these trucks are amazing and extremely underrated! Best midsize truck by far unless you're planning on doing heavy duty off-roading (this will handle dirt roads better than any truck because of the independent suspension). I've owned an '08 and now own a 2021. I'm getting ~19 mpg city and up to 30 mpg on the highway at 5000 feet above sea level! Tons of cargo area with the trunk and rear folding seats. Tows my 16' boat and camping gear (~3,000 lbs) with ease and very quick and sporty off the line (7 sec to 60 mph). I've driven through 2 feet of snow with ease (No buttons to push, just drive). It drives amazing and sometimes I'll find any excuse to just go on a drive so I can be in it
for me having that truck bed is the number 1 feature that makes it a truck, this would include even the old el camino 😂 .
Very very well designed truck. And weather some deny this, it is objectively a truck. This vehicle has it all, almost. In the next refresh Honda needs to add, maybe as an option, a full electrical rear window, just like the new Tundra. Also to have a more off-road oriented version where the gear ratios have a lower 1st gear, to simulate low range and maybe an inch more ground clearance. This is obviously not a truck to do heavy off road, but a little extra capability does not harm. As it is, it has very good traction, what it lacks is a bit of ground clearance and protection plates bellow. But good work Honda, very good truck.
Sold my 2019 F150 4x4 earlier this year (for profit due to vehicle shortages) and purchased the 2021 RTL. Needed a truck my wife could actually get into without hurting her bad knees. Love the Ridgeline. Avg 19.2 in mostly city driving. Longer trips on highway I avg 22. Has all the stuff I need and many features I wanted on the XLT. But didn't want to pay for a Lariat (Leather, sunroof, advanced safety features, LED headlights, AWD, rear air) Drives and handles super although the F150 was also a great ride.
I Love the humor you are injecting into your videos. And I do have a good opinion of the Ridgeline overall but would like to see more available engine options with more hop ion the future. It is a great truck but there is room for improvement for the possibility of mods that simply do not exist right now. That is why you do not see any lofted Ridgelines.
Good review. We have a 2019 RTL-E that's my wife's vehicle (I drive an F250 among others). The Ridgeline is genuinely impressive. The physical radio button you pointed out is an upgrade over the 2019. The rear trunk is brilliant. The Ridgeline is a worthy competitor to other "fishing trucks" (1/2 ton trucks) that guys drive and think are tougher than the Ridgeline.
Thanks for sharing!
I have a 2017 RTL-E I bought used 2 years ago with 11k miles, now 24k miles. I went from a Ram Laramie crew cab intentionally downsizing. It was an easy transition. Good enough to handle stuff a typical homeowner would need, easier on gas, easier to park, cruises really nice. One annoying thing I wondered is if Honda ever fixed was putting ventilated seats in the US versions. After all the Canadian ridgelines were getting them. Tip - if you shop Ridgelines and wonder about the cryptic RTL RTL-T RTL-E etc. and wonder how they line up just refer to Pilot RTL-Elite=RTL-E), RTL-Touring=RTL-T, etc. Not exactly the same but roughly follows the Pilot trim lineup. Ridgelines come in FWD and AWD except for he RTL-E which all are AWD. West metro Denver area I get 18-19 mpg around town. I don't really consider it a "truck" but it does have a purpose.
I traded in my 2019 Ram 1500 on a 2022 Honda Ridgeline. I was probably the biggest critic of the Honda ridgeline until my wife purchased a 2022 Honda pilot elite. I absolutely loved the ride and comfort. Decided to just check out the ridgeline as well as the 2022 Tacoma and frontier. To me, it wasn't even close, the ridgeline was roomier, more comfortable, and just more convenient all around. I absolutely love my Ridgeline
Thank you for taking the time to share!
I have about 6000 miles on my 2021 Ridgeline. I have 19.8 mpg for city and hwy driving (mostly city). I love my Ridgeline!
the ridgeline doesnt need anyone constantly defending it....MY take on this as why ppl dislike it,i truely believe alot of other truck owners are in a way jealous of how trouble-free it is while being a Honda afterall =) vs a huge heavy-duty from other brands out there with not-so-hot-reputations that are much bigger trucks but yet with constant problems and headaches oh and constant un-scheduled trips/visits and waits at the dealer giving them the run-around, but hey you have a 'huge real truck'=lol thats laughable and childish at the same time to have that mentality i feel while most ridgeline owners have nothing but positve things to say about it,then theres the 10+year-owner of the ridgeline which i love to read because after 10yrs and they still own it and esp being still happy with it,tells me a whole lot for the best! btw, take notice wherever you live, next time or 2 youre driving around as how many ridgelines you DONT see for sale on dealer lots/used car lots etc.id take any ridgeline trim level over any other 'truck-brand' for piece of mind afterall im not entering an off-road contest to begin with, just my own enjoyment.if someone doesnt 'like' the ridgeline then look the other way =)
I have a 2017 Ridgeline and get around 24 MPG and love the ride. 145,000 and running great 👍
Thank you for sharing, Ron!
It's a very nice truck, with good reliability.
I’ve owned an RTLE since February. Truck has 5300 miles. I’ve been getting 19mpgs in the city and 25 on the highway. Love the truck with a few exceptions. Wireless charger works sporadically, wish it had ventilated seats like the Ridgeline has in Canada. Also a front camera would be helpful. The infotainment system might be a little outdated but I don’t have any problems with it. GPS works well.
I same problem with my wireless charger , you have to have phone turned a certain way for it charge. If you hit a few bumps, it will stop charging.
If anyone has a solution, please let us know.
Otherwise I think the truck is great.
this pickup truck is really beautiful. I like it very much.
My 2017 Lincoln MKX had pushbutton shifting on the dash near the radio in a vertical array.
I am one week into my 2021 RTL -E I have always had GM trucks BUT this fit what I was looking for.
Thank you for sharing, Ric!
Purchased a 2008 Ridgeline in 2010. Had it for 11 years. It fulfilled all my needs for a truck. Ordered a 2021 Ridgeline in March, picked it up in June. The vehicle exceeded all my expectations. Ride comfort is outstanding. It is our travel vehicle of choice. One minor gripe though. The idle-stop feature should my option to activate, not to de-activate. Just purchased the idle-stop disable wiring harness and installed it. Extremely satisfied with this truck.
Thank you for sharing and thank you for taking the time to watch!
mcahill135, can you show me where you bought the harness at? Thanks!
I've gotten about 17.8 mpg in the city on my 2021 Black Edition, but I haven't driven it much. It's a very comfortable truck and one of the safest available.
Thank you for sharing, John!
I like this truck since they came out the first time.
I love my 2017 Ridgeline but the one option I would love to see added is a Heads Up Display. I have it in my Sonata and it is a great feature.
I like that idea! Thank you for taking the time to watch and leave a comment, Gerald.
The Ridgeline is definitely underrated. I have a 20 RTL-E and travel as a sales rep in upstate NY. I did put 4 snow tires on it and it plows through the stuff. I looked at the GMC Sierra with the 3.0 diesel and Ford 3.0 as well. Each would have been $15-20k more than I paid. I now see the Sierra is having “issues” with long or hard start and also transmission problems. Ford is discontinuing the 3.0 diesel. The Ridgeline ride is very smooth and it handles very well. My mileage on the highway is typically 23 mpg and I don’t use the green eco button. Having the trunk in the bed has been fantastic. I added the Truxedo roll top tonneau cover to keep everything hidden. The only gripes I have is the location for the blind spot indicator and the lag in the electronic push button shifting.
I appreciate you taking the time to share, Charles!
It's basically a Subaru with a bed, and I mean that in a positive way.
Personnally, I wish I had a shifter. This to me is needed on a truck. I have hit the wrong button too many times.
I have a '22, was showing 29 MPG from Jay Peak to Maine on the back roads around 55 MPH. Down to 24 MPG once I got on the I95 doing 75+ MPH.
Thank you for sharing!
Honda should add in the future to an updated Ridgeline a true off road package. Which would include 2 inches of more ground clearance, full skid plating true AT tires an updated off road traction control system .
I haven't looked...but I wonder if anyone makes a kit...you could just lift it yourself, add skid plates, a d buy new tires...diy...problem solved.
agreed
@@kevinshere I yes 🙌
You cant do serious off-roading in a unibody truck no matter what you do to it. This was made for the majority of consumers, not a niche market that wouldn't buy a Honda anyway.
I have the 2021 Hyundai Sonata and they also have a push button shifter.
Love this truck, I own a 2017 Ridgeline, what I dislike is were the put the oil filter to do an oil change and the transmission oil filter is kind like a nightmare, to remove it your self. After all good gas millage amazing stability quiet.Love Honda Stuff.
Thank you for sharing, David!
IT'S THE BEST TRUCK! YEAH!
MY BLACK EDITION WORKS FOR ME AND I ENJOY THE VERY GOOD GAS MILEAGE (20 MPG IN TOWN)!
Thank you for sharing, Harold!
American Definition of a Truck:
Something you commute to work in, and occasionally throw golf clubs in the back.
MPG 18.4 with mixed driving. I have a 2021 Black Edition.
Thank you for sharing, Shawn!
They need a 12v outlet in the back seat - or maybe even two conserving everyone has a Jackery power pack or a Dometic fridge. Both would sit nicely in that flat back seat area.
recent trip from Chicago to Florida...24.1 mpg...it took me 1.5 hr to get out of Chicago. The truck was pretty loaded. When I watch how I drive I can get 26 mpg over 400 miles
Thank you for sharing, Robert!
my 2021 Ridgeline RTLE gets 18.9 MPG consistently in the city. I actually do haul things in the back and no problems with anything. I wish they used better seat leather, it seems cheap or fake, rubbery not sure.
I have a 2017 ridgeline, would like to see more comfortable front seats and larger arm rests, especially the arm rests!
RTL-E this truck does it all. Way easier to work with.
Getting 22.4 combined at about 53k miles on my 2019. I drive mostly in econ so my dog isn’t slammed around in the back, though.
Thank you for sharing, Jake!
I’m @ 19.4 mpg currently city for my 2020 RTL-E
A traditional arm rests and little more ground clearance, but not necessary, and this thing would be perfect for me.
I like the Ridgeline but can you do a video on the Nissan Frontier?
I'll see what I can do about that. Thank you for the request!
retiring at the end of this year.would like to
get a 2022 black edition.
I retired a year and a half ago ended up buying a 2020 sport love my truck 😀
Congrats! I just bought my retirement Ridgeline! A 2018 RTL-E with 20k miles. I am obsessed with it.
If it was a Ford or Chevy, it would never have been called a NART. Nonetheless, it's an amazing everyday driving vehicle that you'll fall in love with at first drive! My 21' RTL-E with almost 9k miles has continuously been getting 23-24 overall mpg!
Thank you for sharing!
You can see that with the Ford Maverick. Same style truck, but nobody is calling that NART .
Honestly if they made it look more rugged I’d be game. I like the ridgeline, just not a huge fan of the styling. Also a normal shifter would be nice instead of buttons
Get with the times old man. Bulky hoods and shifters need to go. You're asking for impracticality.
I’ll upgrade my 2019 when ventilated seats are available.
The Canadian version already has this!
I have a 2020 Ridgeline RTL-E that gets 25-26 mpg on highway driving between West Virginia and Ohio. One major gripe about this truck is the ability to roll down the windows with the remote. In my 2.5 years of owning this truck, on at least six occasions, I have come out to the garage or driveway (depending on where it is parked) in the morning only to find the windows rolled down because the button sequence had been activated the night before from the key fob being in in my pocket jangling around with my other keys. Fortunately, it hasn't happened on a rainy night while parked in the driveway, but I would like to be able to disable this feature for this reason.
Would also like ventilated seats.
Thank you for sharing! YOu brought up a point I have not heard before concerning the windows.
Use the definition of "pickup truck" instead of "truck" and you get something closer to, well, a pickup truck.... which the Ridgeline IS.
I traded a 2017 Tacoma SR5 4x4 on a 2020 Ridgeline RTL-E and LOVE IT. In every way that matters to me, it is superior to the Tacoma. I couldn't be happier.
wat til it's time to change the timing belt...
love the ridge ,but thing i do not like is truck bed being part of the rest of truck. I know it is unibody , but if someone damages the truck bed, the truck get totaled. I have a large truck and as I get older I find I do not need it anymore and it is big when all my other cars are 2 SUV's .
Really if you someone that does a lot of home DIY and Garden. This is a perfect vehicle, if your into rock crawling or towing larger items there are other trucks for that.
this is often compared to the pilot. I don’t think a lot of people realize, that the ridgeline is ACTUALITY 13.7 inches longer then the Pilot .
Thank you for sharing, David!
202 Honda Ridgeline rtl-e, what I don't like is the truck will shift into P when the door is open. I need this when backing up in tight spaces and drive ways, think next to a ditch.
That's all really.
Oh tires could be slightly larger, the current aesthetic is "a bit off" to me.
I get around 21mpg overall with 90% highway and 10% city. I have hit 30 mpg on the highway on level area at 70mpg and econo button on.
Thank you for sharing!
Love my '21 RTL-E, but have a couple gripes. First is the “engine off at idle” feature. No way should it be the default setting….if you don't want it, it must be turned off every time you start the vehicle. It should be elective by the driver….turned on if you want it. My second gripe has to do with the “blind spot indicator light”. It should be in the mirror glass like every other vehicle I've ever seen. Some “genius” at Honda decided to locate it in the door panel, near the mirror. In my opinion, when checking for a vehicle in the blind spot, a driver will check his/her mirror first (where the indicator should be), not the door panel, where the indicator light is somewhat difficult to see (and impossible to see, if sunlight is shining on it). I'm through venting…..I really do love my RTL-E….well worth the extra money. JDM (Linda's hubby)
I'm getting tired of waiting for the one i ordered back in April now September to be built and delivered.
I would want automatic tailgate!!!
Only upgrade that I can think of is making the bed about 2-3 inches deeper. Own a 2018 RTL-E
Thank you for sharing, Ray!
Yes. Its a truck plain n simple....
lol, Ridgeline is a truck, and it's a very good one. I have 2019 RTL-T...not only it's a truck, It's a very durable one. mortar, bricks....yeah I have few dents and scratches on the side
I’m glad to hear you’re using your Ridgeline truck the way it was meant to be used. Thanks for taking the time to watch and leave a comment!
2023 RTL... getting 20 mpg combined, 23.5 mpg highway. But I've disabled the VCM (variable cylinder management) so it doesn't cut back to 3 cylinders on reduced load highway driving, which has slightly lowered my highway mpg. VCM has too many documented engine issues... along with the IdleStop (off/on) feature. Both are just Honda's gimmicky way of meeting the CAFE (Corporate Average Fuel Economy) standard to the detriment of consumers in the way of future repairs.
I wish Honda would bring back the option of being able to switch between AWD and 2 wheel drive... having AWD full time when road conditions don't require it, eats up the mpg. Also... bag the timing belt that needs replacement as a $1,200 "maintenance item",
Naysayers that label it not-a-truck, are usually hung up on the fact that the Ridgeline is uni-body construction instead of body-on-frame, which makes me laugh, because they also have no qualms about the new Ford Bronco and Maverick... which are uni-body construction.
Show me another mid-sized truck where a 4x8 sheet of plywood or drywall lays flat in the bed... I'll wait.
I appreciate you taking the time to share!
Great video but it looks like one person was butthurt so far. LOL
The Ridgeline needs better ground clearance and a bit larger tires to put into the truck category. Really nice vehicle overall !
Also look at the new Maverick by Ford , Look like there all going to try the truck look , just think if you can convert the Equinox to a truck it would save weight , as no glass , no door , and no roof.
I the manufactures will try it in some form or another , look at I believe is Hyundai is trying a truck SUV.
Fuel mileage on my 2010 general driving around 22mpg to 25mpg. CDN gallon
Thanks for sharing!
The entire rear window going down.
Front wiper defrost.
Other than that it’s great!
would be nice if honda didn't use timing belt/interference engine in this thing...
My first gen has front wiper defrost, dont see why the 2nd gen wouldnt.
🇯🇵👏🏽
Made in America brainstorm. Lol
2020 RTL E 16 mpg
Thank you for sharing, Curtis!
The higher trims need ventilated seats
In Canada the top 2 trims do come with ventilated seats. They don't in the US?
I have a 2018 RTL and I aver
age 24.5 MPG most of my driving is freeway (80+mph)
Thank you for sharing!
Just design an off-road model with locking hubs, a small lift, bigger tires and a disconnecting sway bar. Charge 45-55 for it and go against the tacoma, ranger colorado off road offerings. You will instantly win over 80% of those that thing it is not a truck.
off road focus Ridgeline has little customers in terms of numbers than an all purposed truck
most said it's not a truck in its category but in real world it beats all the so cold trucks in comparo
The NART(not actually a truck) lol
The design of Ridgeline was better suited to meeting my needs than any other midsize truck. However, it has 2 fatal defects. First it is not an off-road truck, so the standard AWD only adds complexity, decreases fuel economy, and adds $3,000 to the price when compared to the completion. If you live in a snow belt then disregard that comment. Second, it has one of the last remaining interference timing belt engines. Apparently, Honda has no problem saving $10-15 per vehicle when they know every customer will spend $1,300 between 60,000 and 100,000 miles to change the timing belt and water pump. And the HPD package is more than a $3,000 option for some graphics and tire package. Try buying a Ridgeline for less than $40,000.
Fatal defects? I have yet to see owners get killed on those "defects". I remember a Firestone tire or a pinto had fatal defects but never a single vehicle for being non-offroad or equipped with a timing belt. Talk about exaggeration lol.
A TRD PRO Tacoma is well over 40k and still has cramp interior space.
@@squidusn71 So you have no problem with a $3,500 routine scheduled maint item or $3,000 for an AWD system that only provides a benfit in snow which 45% of Americans never see. I however do not have $6,500 extra lying around.
@@clarkkent9080 lol there you go again and now exaggerating with costs.
I changed timing belt, water pump, tensioner, on my odyssey, same motor cost parts and labor to my mechanic $600. You don't have to do it at a stealership

weird request but can you look under the drivers seat and let me know if there are vents for the climate control or if the vents in the rear console facing the seats are the only ones. planning to put an amp under the seat and my Ridgeline has not arrived from the dealer yet.
The vents are there under the seat so plan accordingly.
FWIW, there ARE vents under both seats on my ‘19 Black Ed.
I’ll give it a try…. Hey Honda, get rid of the auto start/stop feature as well as the absolute miserable failure called Variable Cylinder Management . It causes oil burning, fouled plugs, failing motor mounts, radically reduced engine life and poor overall drivability. Who knows… Maybe Honda will read this!!
Good reason to not buy a newer Ridgeline if you hate the engine stop/start junk. I added a device to shut off the cylinder management, use top tier gas and it purrs like a kitten.
@@kjisnot my plans exactly…. Plus an oil catch can.
Google “autostopper “, it automatically turns off Honda auto start feature
I can get 30 mpg with strictly highway driving
Thank you for sharing, Bruce!
Battery is difficult to access.
I would like so see this truck get a full frame conversion instead of looking like the pilot suv to make it better IMO , other than that it’s a good truck !!
Thank you for sharing, Troy!
The owner doesn’t have it anymore.
Doesn't look like the Pilot anymore on the outside.
@@mgp9733 I agree with you , referring to the Uni-body as well as looks
If it's a good truck, there's no need for change as far as the chassis structure is concerned. It's what separates it from others which actually is being copied now by ford, Hyundai, and others(soon).
Honda mind as well make a different truck to your liking...or just get a Tacoma, Ranger, Colorado/canyon, frontier.
New 2023 18.3 MPG Highway 1000 miles on truck 17.4 MPG city
Thank you for sharing, Kenneth!
A truck is rear wheel drive which is better for towing, or hauling stuff around. The Ridgeline is a front wheel biased AWD which is not good for either of those jobs. I don't care just because you can fit stuff in the bed. The drive wheels are not in the right place.
My 2020 Sport is plenty of truck for me. I tow a pop up camper have a rack to carry my 17 foot canoe lots of storage to carry all my stuff and take down dirt roads. Plus the ride is really comfortable and I can get up to 28 mpg on the highway.
Thank you for taking the time to share, Tom!
Less boring looking please ... Although styling seems to be improving....
Hybrid-Hybrid-Hybrid , gas will soon be 100 bucks a gallon !
The interior needs A LOT of work tech wise.
Hey Jared, I hear that a lot .
What would you change on the interior? I have a 2021 RTLE . I've looked at other trucks, they all have about same stuff. Not sure what you could add , without increasing the price higher then it already is .
@@michaelbayliss1794
I have a 2021 too, just a few additions would make it perfect.
it needs a 110 outlet, 3 prong, inside and outside.
Hopefully the next gen has a bigger display and much better infotainment
360 camera would be nice
Relocate the shifter to the dash as a wheel maybe.
Mainly just a more modern dash.
Maybe they could cut the truck bed audio lol.
it needs bigger wheels and another 2 inches of ground clearance and people would shut up.
Agreed!
I love the pickup but Honda Corporate needs to address their unibody cab and fix their leaks that happen on the back of the cab from rain or car washes, or have the back of the cab a solid piece of steel as does Tacoma
.
Thank you for taking the time to watch and share, Steve!
I’d like to see Honda put a real arm rest in the Ridgeline not those seat applied fake ones!!!
Trying really hard to convince viewers it's not a truck. Note: one Ridgeline is sold for every 100 pickup trucks.
Truck: (noun) any of various forms of vehicle for carrying goods and materials, usually consisting of a single self-propelled unit but also often composed of a trailer vehicle hauled by a tractor unit.
Idk where you're getting your numbers from but for one of any truck sold there's a large number of (every other manufacturers) truck sold.... You're not the brightest crayon in the box, are you?
That must mean that any car that is outsold by another is no longer a car? The sales of one vehicle to another make no difference in what a vehicle is. The Ridgeline is a truck.
@@johnnygiamo3840 my new homie! Agreed
Please feel free to drop a link for the source you used to proclaim one Ridgeline sold per every 100 trucks that are not a Ridgline.
@@VehicleVisionary Unless Thomas uses a link from his own blog, it will not happen because it is purely his fictitious belief.
