    I worked as a movie theater usher for a year and a half (Christmas 2013-Spring 2015) and remember think how some of those January/February movies got greenlit. There were two forgettable movies about Hercules that came out January 2014. But I did see a couple of decent indies coming out then as well. And senior citizens are always a reliable customer base.

    • @marsilies
      @marsilies Před 2 lety +14

      The Hercules films likely got greenlit after the success of the Clash of the Titans remake in 2010. Hollywood tends to look at what's popular and tries to duplicate it, but films can take several years to make, so you have to look a few years back to find the success they're trying to duplicate. Like how for several years after Dances with Wolves came out, Hollywood made a lot of Westerns to try and capitalize on it.
      The indies may have expanded from a December limited release to a wider January release. They can't compete with the December blockbusters, but want to get released before the Oscar cutoff for the year. So they then expand in January after the December blockbusters are winding down and get a lot of "it's new to me" viewers.

    Australia has similar times when the studios wont movies (or more often certain kinds of movies). A perfect example is that no studio will ever release a movie that is in some way targeted at kids in Australia in February (no matter what the release date is for the rest of the world) because that's when our big summer holidays have just ended and everyone is busy with back-to-school stuff.
    Warner Bros did this with The LEGO Movie where they delayed the Australian release long after the worldwide release and many people were annoyed at that (and no doubt people pirated the film). With the sequel though they got smarter and allowed cinemas to run preview screenings around the time of the worldwide release (so those who wanted to see it and had the time etc could do so) but delayed the general wide release until later when more kids would be in a position to go see it.
    Thankfully Australia (kids movies or a few other rare cases aside) seems to get movies fairly close to the worldwide release date these days although Covid has disrupted that (with a large chunk of cinemas in the country shut due to lockdowns, a number of films got pushed back including Bond, Venom, Dune and Ghostbusters)

      That would be a frustrating system, at most jobs I've worked here in the Netherlands you usually get all the hours to spend at the start of the year. And in my last two jobs at least they have been valid for 2 years which would avoid the problem you outlined in the first comment. People who start working somewhere halfway into the year and/or work reduced hours per week get their hours reduced by those ratios. But there's always the option to borrow about 50 hours (on fulltime employment) from the next year with permission of the manager too.
      The legal requirement for the 36 hours that is considered full time employment at my current employer is 144 hours of vacation per year, there are often some extra hours on top in the CAO (collective agreement, often specific per job sector) but that will vary per CAO.
      However people still tend to stick to the traditional times to take their vacations: summer and the end of the year holidays. Especially if they still have children they need to drag along, you're kinda stuck with the school schedule in that case. But if that's not yet or no longer a restraint going a bit before or after the regular peaks tends to result in much cheaper trips, just gotta be a bit careful not to deviate too much in case your preferred activities there also shut down.

This since people want to enjoy the sun and good weather outside, not be stuck in a dark room. Also many people would be travelling on their holiday, and a lot of cinemas closed. However it seems to start becoming more popular to see movies in the summer nowadays. Also most December Oscar movies, will make their way here in January or February, so they are usually a good time to see high quality movies.

    As the previous manager of a historic theatre, I can actually attest to this. But I can also shed some more light on the fact that this is a problem for theatres. As theatres, we don't get to choose what we show. We have distributors who typically give the best shows to the big theatres like Cineplex. Then the rest of the theatres have to bid for the rest. Also part of the reason for the current movie release schedule is actually hugely about the release schedule of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. I wish I had the talent to make videos like this about the movie industry. As a previous theatre manager there is lots of cool insider information I have about the movie industry.

      UHF should have had an October or April release. Weekend at Bernie's is another one that should not have been a summer release. Studios have largely refined and tweaked best case release dates.
      Tyler Perry made January profitable for his films. It's undeniable that his films cater to a particular audience, and this audience just happens to be heavily concentrated in a region which isn't as affected by atrocious winter weather ruining road conditions to the cinema. His films probably could have worked out almost any time of the year, but January ensured that they could get as many targeted screens and showtimes as they needed without competing against ultra wide release blockbusters.
      The theatre I frequented several years ago actually changed what film it could show in a single auditorium from showing to showing. I presume this gave them more flexibility to stagger longer and shorter films for maximum availability and time variety. All of the artwork and the like were completely digital in the foyer. It was neat seeing what technology has accomplished in small ways.

    • @marsilies
      @marsilies Před 2 lety +5

      If there was a way to accurately predict if a movie would be both good and successful, studios would do it. As it is, even if one starts with a good script, movies are such a large collaborative effort where so much can go wrong, it can sometimes seem a miracle any movies even get completed, let alone are made well. Also, studios are mainly interested in making money, and good movies fail all the time, so they're more concerned with making successful movies, but audience tastes seem impossible to predict and change with the winds.
      Not a film, but look at Tiger King, which exploded in popularity in a way nobody could've predicted. But now Tiger King 2 is out, and nobody cares, even though it's more of the same. Tiger King was in the right place at the right time and was what many people wanted at the exact time it came out: a trashy distraction at the time so many other films/shows were on hold. But now for the second season, there isn't the same audience there anymore. So one can't even depend on past success to predict future performance.
      And sadly, cheap knockoffs like Atlantic Rim are made cheaply enough and sell just well enough to keep getting made. There's enough people that aren't that critical about their viewing experiences that if it doesn't cost that much, it can be profitable.
