@@danieljensen2626 Yeah it just sucks when she gets her way in, and Sarah Burke died while training to get to the olympics. She was not risking her life like the other pipe skiers that worked their whole lives to get there. She had the money to pay to go the competitions, not many people get that opportunity without earning it.

Henry Hall anyone that goes to the olympics pretty much has the money to get there. Even with sponsors, it’s expensive so I don’t believe she really had an edge money wise. Also, her lack of tricks or whatever didn’t contribute to another competitor dying. That’s really sad someone died but risking your life isn’t a qualification to get to compete in the olympics. (Just to clarify, I’m not at all trying to make less of the girl’s death. That is tragic)

I did an internship in Singapore in college, while there I met an elderly retired couple of expats from Canada. They had just got through representing Singapore in the Japan winter olympics. They apparently got called (without requesting it) by the Singapore government and were asked if they knew any winter sports. They said, "yes curling" and were offered the opportunity to "try out" for the Singapore olympic team. They went to what they thought would be a tryout, just for fun, they had only every curled on an amature level with friends on rare occasions, but thought it would be fun. When they arrived, they found they were the only ones trying out, and they were already considered on the team.
They came in next to last in the Japan Olympics, but got to spend the entire olympics living in the Olympic village, meeting professional athletes, and had having an amazing vacation paid for by the Singapore government.

I gotta admit that it's pretty funny, but consider this. To be there and just lazily slide down the slope she displaced an actual competitor who worked hard and risked injury every day to get good and for whom making it into the Olympics would have been the high point of her life. An actual crowning achievement to someone's thousands of hours of hard work. Imagine being number 25 on that list, watching the Olympics at home, knowing how close you came to being there and then seeing number 24 who took your slot pull this shit. If she really had to take that olympic slot and be there just to be able to call her self an Olympian, she could have at least trained for real in her own time outside of those qualifying races and actually present a competitive performance during her run.

No. It's not her fault the sport is so thinly practiced and represented, but that's the situation many "olympic" sports find themselves in. Half-pipe is hardly the only one. The olympic committee decided this is ok, and so did every skiing organization around the world. It seems to be not very professional or athletic from the ground up. If there aren't enough countries and participants in a given sport, it should just be canceled from the official schedule until it becomes more popular through the actions of the advocating sports organizations (if they insist on being in the olympics).

No, she did. She embarrassed an entire nation (and one she had virtually no connection with) and all its previous and future Olympic athletes and turned them into a global laughingstock as "official" representatives of arguably "the worst Olympian of all time!" She even had the nerve to say in her post-run interview, "I just wanted to make Hungary proud" after embarrassing the entire country and their Olympic committee.
I will admit, what she did is not a scam. But it truly was a selfish act that was a giant sharp needle in the eye of an entire nation!

I can't call myself one of the best in my country if I'm ranked 50th in my country, and the Olympics defined it as the top 24 or whatever. OTOH, if someone else sucks worse than I do, but they're representing a country with a weak team, they can still call themselves one of the best for their country. If you want a competition that only has the best of the best regardless of country, the Olympics ain't it, no matter how much you want it to be.

A little fact about Eddie the Eagle. On quite a few occasions, when he tried to jump after the Olympics, he would put in humongous jump, but wouldn't be able to stick the landing. The East German ski jumping coach said if Eddie had been got hold of at the latest 14, he would have been considered a natural. But it was too late for Eddie. (And if anybody mentions the glasses, remember that Weissflog had specialist contact lenses that were almost Eddie's strength).

Hats off to Elizabeth Swaney for trolling the Olympics. Technically she qualified so he earned every right to compete in the Olympics. I have no idea how corrupt Hungary’s Olympic Committee is? But she wouldn’t have earned the right to represent Hungary without their olympic sports committee approval.
I know that for a fact here in the Philippines where olympic sports committees are in fact very political & corrupt. If an executive of a national sports committee doesn’t like a particular athlete personally. That athlete will never be selected to represent the country. Even if they’re the best qualified athlete in the country to represent the sport. There’s always going to be Nepotism & Favoritisms involved when it comes to selection which athlete to send to international competitions.
So even if you pay 100% for you own way to compete internationally to represent the country. Without that national sports committee seal of approval. You aren’t recognized officially as a national athlete. An athlete can even be fined & sanctioned by a national sports committee if they competed internationally without permission.
