      ...did we watch the same clip? Cause the message I heard here, is the appetite for a trade wasn't there, or wasn't strong enough. Not last offseason, not this offseason. How can the NMCs be a problem if the players are never asked to waive them by the team? If the team has no intentions of (or no money for) resigning Marner, his last year's gonna be noisy AF anyways. And we know he hears it. What more damage could u do, broaching the future with him, or dropping a trade in his lap?

    • @ItsJared___
      @ItsJared___ Před 15 dny +4

      @@Cal94 I think management knows they'd get shafted in any trade, and Dubas was afraid of hurting anyone's feelings. Look what happened to Calgary, on the verge of being a contender, and one trade later they are one of the worst teams with one of the worst contracts in the league. Maybe try and deal Marner at the deadline to a contender, but aside from that there's not much you can do unless he gives the okay

      @bpastorb Před 14 dny

      I agree with this - its going to be another wasted year because of letting his NMC contract kick in last year, and in my opinion continuously waiting to ever play hardball. If they started playing hardball with Mitch last off season, this off-season a trade may have been more plausible. This video may claim they never talked but what do these 'insiders' really know? Half of it sounds like they are guessing as they go along. However if we all can agree the Leafs aren't a stanley cup winning team set-up like this, why even let Marner play? They don't need his 100 regular season points just to get into the playoffs for another first round loss. Instead how about trying to give some of the younger kids a shot that have earned themselves one. If we are stuck with Marner I would way rather see Robertson get a real shot, or one of the various other players that could probably play on a higher line given a consistent chance and ice time. If they don't make it to the playoffs oh well, at least it wasn't a completely wasted year. Some players would get real development.

      If we are going off Marners own description of the playoffs (in his post season interview) then yes that is very late. He called the playoffs "7 games" in his post season interview. So as long as the first round is won in under 6 games mitchy will still play that 7th 2nd round game. Hell if you can get a sweep in round one you may even get three round 2 games out of mitchy. Just don't ask him to show up for anymore. His words not mine, but most people missed that little tidbit because they were so caught up with his 'gods' comment.

      @user-yq5yj8vk5l Před 15 dny

      @carletonrutherford1799 He will be destroying most of the trade value to the Leafs by playing hardball about where to go - IFF - he accepts a move at all. If he won't accept a trade, then he has 0 trade value anyway.
      Putting him in a position to maximize personal success by giving him top minutes reduces his willingness to be traded and lowers the expected return on a Marner trade. Not to mention, his contract is too big to move in-season without taking a bath on the trade. After the season, and before July 1, he has trade value again, but it will be on the order of a 2nd or 3rd round pick, max, as the team he wants to sign with will cough it up to get him the 8th year (and lower AAV), but they'll know they're getting him either way, so won't pay much.
      There is no universe in which teams stop seeing the value of Marner because the Leafs choose to play him in a way that maximizes his desire to be traded over his in-season impact on team performance.

    Steve thinks the "real NHL" comment has to do with the Toronto media circus, but he should watch this clip back and really listen to the conversation. They are all making a case for why Toronto isn't considered the "real NHL" by outsiders. Any other team like Tampa or Florida or Vegas would've blown this roster up 4 years ago after the lack of success. Look at what Tampa has done after going out in the first round 2 years in a row. You think they would've waited 7? You think other teams are afraid of change? Sometimes the moves are good, sometimes bad, sometimes they make fans mad, but they make them where as Toronto has not. And they all know that's not how other teams who've had success do business, but yet they get mad when they're called out on it externally, but you complain nonstop internally. The irony.

    You guys don't get it. The reason why Dubus was fired was because he wanted to split up the not-so fab four. It went against everything that Shanny noted publically for the past 5 years about the core. As soon as Dubus publically stated it needed to change - he was let go.

    • @mattrix4200
      @mattrix4200 Před 15 dny +2

      That is NOT why he wasn't renewed - that's the rumour & speculation that has been suggested by the SDPN boys but not one single person has confirmed it... What HAS been confirmed by BOTH Dubas & Shanahan is a miscommunication on Dubas' role, authority, and what he felt was a ''fair deal''. Dubas pulled a ''Nylander'' by sitting and waiting until Shanahan and the MLSE board gave him more of what he requested (more authority over trades and a larger salary) - it is RUMOURED he wanted this so he could trade the core-4 but again that's never been confirmed by anyone - but for all we know it could be because he wanted to double-down and extend their contracts but the MLSE board didn't want to commit the money ahead of time... The ''rumour'' that has never been confirmed by anyone (but somehow became ''truth'' to casual fans who like to speculate) is that Dubas wanted the authority to trade the core members. True? A lot of Leafs fans were on the Marner out train after the Panthers series last year. If Marner stays, don't be surprised if they have another first or second round exit against Boston, Tampa, or Florida. I think Mitch would work better if he had prime Crosby with him, who gets into the dirty areas of the ice constantly (and a great passer as well), but Matthews doesn't do that. If Marner thinks the pressure on him has been great, wait until he performs poorly in the playoffs making 12.5 or 13 mil per year.

    I think the biggest culprit is the way we play which we addressed by bringing in Berube who will play a more simple North South game and stop all these drop passes and hiding along the perimeter.

    • @drlca6601
      @drlca6601 Před 16 dny

      a little? the fanbase has been delusional since g7 against Boston, but can you blame them? The issue is they scapegoat Marner like he wouldn't be on the top line on Team Canada with McDavid, because they aren't able to take out their rage on MLSE... that leaves the management, coaches and players as the object of their hatred... usually the players. Marner is overpaid, but by yesterday's standards... going forward these contracts will be much more common. Marner is a case of retrospect... years from now after Marner wins cups and goes in the HoF people will talk about how hard he was scapegoated in Toronto. The shade towards Marner while ignoring Dubas and Treliving's mistakes with Nylander is just funny to see, but since Mathews and Nylander are locked up, that leaves only Marner to scapegoat. Marner just got caught in the wrong place at the wrong time. Should he produce more in the playoffs? The whole team lost that series, not Marner or Mathews.

    6:41 Yeah this is true - They should have moved marner before the NMC kicked in last summer - when they didn't move him and the NMC kicked in, they should have benched him all of this season and started playing hardball a year earlier. It would have made no difference. He performed like we all knew he would and they lost miserably in the first round. What would him sitting have changed? Not having to deal with the depression of watching a playoff loss?
    However with that said - by not doing anything now, its going to be another situation of 'a year too late' next year because we gain nothing by letting him play out his contract if anything just increases his value to other teams if he can pull a good season out of his ass (ideally for him not making it to the playoffs). Or more likely totally screw the situation completely and just end up re-signing him at some point this coming season when he goes on a crazy point run, which I bet will happen.

    Also, Dubas gets a lot of slack for those contracts, but remember: they were signed before lockdown. If there was no lockdown, the cap would have been 90+ million two years ago. Also, even with those big contracts, the Leafs still had a good enough team to beat the Habs in 2021, but they didn't, mostly because Matthews and Marner underperformed. They probably beat Boston in April if Marner and Tavares showed up. Edmonton made the conference final two years ago and they didn't have an incredibly deep team, but McDavid and Draisaitl were monsters.

    Very simple. (1) They have no choice on the Core 4 except to wait out the expiry of Marner and Taveres' contracts. (2) There ARE several major changes to the team: the coach - upgraded to a proven Stanley Cup winner from a Marlies grad, the starting goaltender and the D-Core.
    I really think this coming year will be all-or-nothing for the Core 4 under Berube. Either they shape up for the playoffs into the playoff contending group they were meant to be, or they get broken up completely, or even both. That's what happened under Berube in St. Louis when he converted a bottom-of-the-league team to the Stanley Cup winner...then watched it fall to pieces the next year after Captain Pietrangelo went to free agency because he wasn't given a no-move clause for himself and his young family, signed a contract with Vegas and went on to win another Cup.

I maintain that the team should just let Marner and Tavares leave at the end of next season and use their money to improve the club.

So they are stuck with these players until they walk. Bad deals since they will end up not getting anything back for those players. HANDCUFFED!!
