      I like the term to which Treliving signed Woll but with the per-season cap hit (almost US$3.67 million) not so much. Whether Woll and Tony Stolarz will be enough to get the Leafs through the regular season remains TBD although I can't think of a season, following the 2019-20 one, during which they've managed to get thru regular-season play with just 2 goalies.

    The truth is that the core should have been dismantled after Montreal. But prolly cause of ego Shanahan did not allow a trade to occur and now we are stuck in a no win situation where we lose Marner for nothing or we pay him a contract which he isnt worth.

    The Last Marrner Experiment: I think Marner has always been better suited to playing centre, which I think he did some in junior. He is not a board battler but a playmarker. Centre would give him more ice to access easily. Typically, the winger would take the man off the puck and the playmaking forward would scoop up the loose puck to find the scoring winger on the other side. He has defensive acument to do the job, so he would really only have to work on being productive on face-offs. But his smarts and quickness could make him a good face-off guy. Moving Marner to centre would also help deflect the narrative going into camp, giving the media another angle to focus on. Further, it could shore up the center ice issue for the Leafs, spending the big dollars down the middle of the ice is more justifiable. Plus, finding top six wingers is easier than top six centres. For the life of me, I can't understand why they have never tried this? Better than Nylander at centre. I see Marner as potentially being in the Denis Savard mode. Smaller players fit better at centre as playmakers rather than on the wings where the board battles take place. I would try Marner there if I were Berube, and tell him he has to also be willing to get his nose dirty when necessary if he wants to stay a Leaf.

    • @almVancouver
      @almVancouver Před 21 dnem +1

      I can't say for sure, but Marner was tried at center in Junior and it simply wasn't a fit. Marner is a valuable player all through the season until the regular season boys game ends and men come out to play in playoffs. Marner is a perimeter pete player. Year after year after year he's proven this. Remember how many times any player that even looks at him and he shoots it over the boards. Marner is a man child. He's a boy wonder playing in a men's league and most certainly doesn't fit a N/S game like Berube will try to implement.

      Nylander’s and AM34’s APPG each exceeded Bertuzzi’s, with those of Marner, Rielly and Tavares having lagged behind. That said, no member of the Leafs’ core-5 put up more points than Bertuzzi while among members of the core-5, only Nylander scored multiple goals in last spring’s Leafs-Bruins playoff series. Matt Knies was the only non-core-5 then-Leaf to score multiple goals in that series, a serious indictment of the way GM Treliving constructed that roster. Failing to move off 1 or more of AM34, Marner, Nylander, Rielly and Tavares meant limited depth and only ONE game during which the Leafs that postseason had scored 3 or more goals/game. Think about it: Reilly, Nylander, and possibly Mathews are not suited to win cups. Not tough or strong enough to go four rounds. Their contracts expire in 7 years or so, Mathews won't resign after 5. Then they'll have to rebuild for the umpteeth time...and on it goes.

So he failed miserably. second, he could have traded Marner to CBJ for jenner (6'2 hit leader, foff % leader, 20-30 goals) provorov (both players pp and pk), and 4th overall pick (Demedov) and now Laine, before they signed Monahan. . brad Trembling

    • @wainber1
      @wainber1 Před 20 dny

      It may be the Leafs will have to retain as much as US$5 million of Marner’s remaining cap hit to move him. Whether Marner will then agree to, as winger Patrick Kane in February 2023 did to facilitate a trade from the Blackhawks to the NYR, waive his full no-move clause still remains TBD. The NYR didn’t re-sign Kane but at least he got to see playoff action and after having won multiple Cups with the Hawks’ team that’d drafted him, seeing SOME playoff action with the NYR sure was a step up on having remained on a team that had been scheduled to come nowhere CLOSE to a playoff spot due to rebuilding.

      @@glimmo43 Being in a contract season can put a lot of pressure on a player to perform. That said, stopping all but 2 shots during game 7 of last spring's Leafs-Bruins playoff series might very well have been the difference between Ilya Samsonov possibly having to play on an AHL contract, ECHL contract or in one of the European hockey leagues and getting to play for a playoff-calibre, albeit still quite flawed, Golden Knights' team that lost its last playoff series to the Dallas Stars in 7 games.
