  • In this video I walk through some of the settings that I use when shooting video on my Panasonic G9. I've been using the camera over the last couple months and these are some suggestions that I have found work for me.

    Thanks for your video, helped me a lot! Which style do you recommend for just shooting video without editing, just cutting?
    And is there a way to use styles like V-Log just for video and not for photo? Is it influencing my RAW-Photo when I shoot with V-Log?

    • @shanebahmann
      @shanebahmann  Před 4 lety

      Mr. Banana I responded in another comment about using either Standard or Natural profiles but I’d still recommend trying different profiles. This is because you can take photos in raw which would give a much higher dynamic range than V-log would give you. For photos, I normally shoot in Raw and then apply a profile in Lightroom as a starting point for editing.

    • @mr.banana5967
      @mr.banana5967 Před 4 lety

      Thanks, so do I with Photos. But if V-Log or another profile is active, does it influence my raw files or is it necessary do de-activate it everytime? I don't like that I can't have different settings for photo and video if I do not use C1, C2 etc.

    • @shanebahmann
      @shanebahmann  Před 4 lety +1

      @@mr.banana5967 *Just a quick correction to my last comment, V-Log Is accessible from both Photo and video modes and It does impact the RAW photo*
      My Custom C1, C2, and C3 are all set for video and have V-Log ready to go, but I use other profiles on my Photo modes so when I switch, I don't have to change the profiles every time. That way I can just turn the dial when I want to switch between photo and video. That being said, I did also set one of the function buttons to be the colour profile, so I can easily change between them.

    Great tutorial. Could you do an in-depth review of V-Log upgrade? What are all the changes. I didn’t know you got so many more options in the firmware. Also one guy said he could not get skin tones right with V Log L on the GH5 upgrade. For this reason I gave it a pass. Do you think the upgrade is worth it?

    • @shanebahmann
      @shanebahmann  Před 4 lety +2

      Terence Kearns Good idea! I’ll put together a review of V-Log on the G9. I haven’t had any issue with skin tones, I’ve seen a couple videos where this was an issue but my understanding is that they were editing 8 bit footage not 10bit. Personally I would still buy the upgrade having used it for a couple months but it depends on your use, the dynamic range from HLG is really good as it is.

    Thank you Shane for this tutorial.I have some problem with G9. Sometimes my videos have this judder/stutter effect while double frame rate is set. Is it connected to codec? I use mp4/8bit.

    • @shanebahmann
      @shanebahmann  Před 4 lety

      Haven’t had this problem myself, but I would try changing your shutter speed and the type of lighting that you use to see if either of these help.

    how is the Sigma 17-50 doing? can it autofocus on the G9? The low light quality is good with speed boster?

    • @shanebahmann
      @shanebahmann  Před 4 lety +1

      Love the lens for video, AF is not great. It's sharp, gives a nice DoF and works well in low light but the AF is noisy and slow (with my Viltrox EF-M2 ii). Also the stabilization doesn't work well with the ibis in the G9 so I normally have it off. If you primarily shoot stills, I'd opt for a panasonic lens to make the most of the AF or if you shoot video you might be able to save some coin and get the Tamron 17-50 instead (which doesn't have stabilization) but I'm not sure how sharp the Tamron is.

    • @shanebahmann
      @shanebahmann  Před 3 lety

      I haven’t noticed any difference in quality, but I don’t normally shoot in mp4 if I can avoid it. MP4 only allows for 8 bit recording and I like to have the flexibility of 10bit which is only available when recording .mov

      There’s a 30 minute limit on 1080p and if you’re using an external recorder I’ve heard reports that the camera shuts off around 45m-1hr so it’s hard to work around if that’s what you need

    Most of people switch from the V-Log L (which is arguably too noisy and provides no real benefit to other (correctly customized profiles) to HLG (or to the natural profile) but you oppose the general trend... How did you grade the HLG and what is your personal experience with the V-Log L in comparison to the HLG?

    • @shanebahmann
      @shanebahmann  Před 4 lety +1

      According to Panasonic, V-Log is supposed to increase the dynamic range from 10 to 12 stops (although I haven't done a full head-to-head test to see how noticeable this supposed increase actually is) and it also comes with a waveform monitor. In terms of grading HLG, I use conversion Luts to convert to a 709 space as a starting point, similar to what I have been doing with V-Log. In my experience, V-Log definitely takes more work and tweaking to get the contrast looking how I would like. I also find that I'm often underexposing V-Log by about a stop in order to get a picture that I like. I still have some learning to do but my motivation for buying V-Log was more to push myself in colour grading and to get used to working with log footage while the dynamic range improvements were a welcome addition.

    • @vladislavihl
      @vladislavihl Před 4 lety

      If you like a contrast look the HLG should be the profile of choice for you. As for me, my ideal color profile (which has the colors of Standard and dynamic range of Cinelike D) doesn’t exist, unfortunately... I’ve tried out the HLG (transforming the footage from Rec.2100 to Rec.709, s. the last video on my channel), but I found the results too contrasty.

    Any changes to your settings since the 2.4 upgrade in June 2021?
    And how does this person get the letterbox Cinematic setting on his G9 please?
    czcams.com/video/fzETPRDOx7E/video.html
    And what is the difference between the M Movie mode and the Movie mode please?

    • @ImPulsESM
      @ImPulsESM Před 2 lety

      For the Cinematic letterboxing, they would have used a cinemascope 2:35:1 black bars ratio and added it in post. I know the GH5 is able to do this in camera, but not the G9
      Edit: G9 may not have the cinemascope aspect ratio, but it does have a Frame Marker to help you know how it's going to look. Settings - Wrench with a C above it - Monitor / Display - Frame Marker, click on set and set the frame aspect to what you like, 2.35:1 being the most common one.
