What settings do I use on my camera for Photography? I get asked that all the time, so here are the answers. Or most of them, hopefully, let me know if I've missed anything! Also, I use a Panasonic Lumix G9, in case you didn't know..

haha.... we have rain here in Western Australia too.... over on the east coast there are kids who are 6 years old and never seen it. Amazing world.
I am pinching myself having just bought a used GX-9 in excellent condition, with collapsible 12-32 lens/battery/viewfinder extension hood/grip-baseplate OEM extension, all for only US$355. I came home to discover that it only has a 699 shutter-count! Wow, what a deal. Damn thing doesn't even have any wear marks, rubs, or scratches!
I bought it from a small camera shop just down the street from my office. It was my first visit to the place in 5 years. I only mentioned I was a neighbor...he took $70 off the price without my asking. I think because I noticed a UH-3 128GB card in the battery bay and he said it was the shop's mistake to have left it inside and therefore not part of the sale. Of course, I wasn't expecting to get an SD card at all and was surprised when he reduced the price. I will be a return customer...what a nice shop.
It is amazing that your channel is successful as a photography focused channel when we rarely see the results of your photography lol, it just goes to show that you are really entertaining to watch, we not only watch to hear your opinions but also to be entertained with your humor. Hey dude, you can have Auto ISO on and tell what speed you want it to kick in at. For example I set minimum speed to 1/60th and after it falls to that the ISO kicks in and starts ramping, Also set max ISO so once it reaches that THEN the speed goes lower that the 1/60th. Using this workflow I always have the least noise possible for the situation. Give it a go :)

Pretty much confirmed my settings but so many great tips, e.g. the front switch set to bracketing, love that little touch, so useful 👍👌😎

Nice one James. I recently got a Lumix GH5 and am getting accustomed to the different menus, this video is very helpful.
As a G9 owner, I really appreciate this video. The G9 has a plethora of options which I really like. But as an enthusiast photographer, I'll take all the help I can get on which settings I should choose and why. I know your CZcams audience uses a variety of cameras but since you use the G9, I'll be eager for more videos like this. Maybe once in awhile?
Awesome video and love your channel. I've been using the G9 in a pro environment for over a year now and LOVE it. you did, however, inspire me to make a video on my channel about the one thing i hate about this camera!
Took me more than a year to get here, but now that I’m at Day One with a G9 thanks for your settings rationale - especially assigning the front toggle switch to bracketing on/off.
Just bought the G9 last week.....great camera so far. Combined it with the 100-400 lens ....fabulous!

Thanks for posting. It's always interesting to see what others are doing with regards to settings on m43. I admit I'm a little surprised about the fixed ISO though. Like with Nikon (and I'm sure other systems too) you can configure the minimum shutter speed before the camera will transition to a higher ISO. Personally I've felt it's worked for me quite well for me so far (just got a G9 last week - I know, a little late to the party, but it's part of my move away from Nikon's FX system) although most of my content is in relatively low-light situations. Keep posting! We love the content.

And thank you for the insight on which mode, how and why.
What I mean is: You like shooting in hand, and being a newbie (read: Not having any equipment yet) I do the same, and backbutton focus is AWESOME for that!
Also the metering mode, and just freakin' dealing with it in particular was a nice touch - I use spot, but might have to switch over to center weighted instead (at least when not "macroing").

thank you for taking time to explain all these settings and stuff to us novices. im very new to photography and got my lumix TZ80 4 weeks ago and am watching various videos on youtube to understand what all the wealth of settings do. without you guys, people like me would be so stuck and it really does go a long way for us!

my words, James.. I don´t like the shutter release button which on Lumix is to itchy. So me too stumbled across this back-button focus thing. Saved my life.
Great video. As a G9 user I found it really useful. I keep forgetting about the lever in the front. Anyway, I’ve set mine to 4K/6k for now as I want to practice this aspect. Good idea for bracketing though. Trying to decide how to set up Custom settings. Well, not so much the setting up, more about how to remember which setting is which!

That G80 really does a great job for filming.
Glad to hear you mention the shutter button being 'soft', i bought my G9 used and thought it was just knackered lol
The flexibility of settings on the G9 is amazing, but daunting in the possible permutations. I personally don't care for the joystick and find direct touch to pick AF points on the rear LCD faster and very intuitive (but I also don't wear gloves a lot when shooting). So I need to figure out some good use for the stick of joy. Initially, I set it so that the center push click activates AF. That way I could use the AF/AE button for AE lock and the joystick for AE on, or vice-versa. I may never assign many of the available function buttons because I'd forget the ones I don't use all the time.
What's your picture profile setting, that would be a a good video in itself where you you could expand on your preferences in terms of colour, great content BTW Dude 👍

Jk I get the settings question on my channel a lot as well. I just picked up a G9 too - do you find it takes slightly cooler images than the G85? Also it seems to have more contrast overall. I typically use Natural color mode and they look super different to me using the same lens and settings on the G9 vs the G85/80.
James i like your videos, well done, but newer to Lumix and needed to see where these settings are to set them not just to hear you mention them. So only a partly useful video for setting up my new G9. Perhaps a follow up with a menu walk through might be useful for more than just myself.
Always interesting to hear what other G9 users have as their settings, because the thing to so totally 'customisable' in every way!
I wonder how many permutations of settings are possible on a G9...??

So this was really useful. I shoot RAW+JPEG on my Lumix GX7. I soon learned to avoid blowing the highlights.
I usually find that I either nail the histogram/RAW file and the JPEG is all washed out, or the exposure gives a usable JPEG with a RAW that's underexposed. I usually want the RAW, but sometimes like to share the accompanying JPEG online before I've had a chance to do any editing. It can be a lottery.
So your exposure bracketing tip hit home. Going 2/3 of a stop either side, I should get a good one of each.
But now my GX7 is writing over 60 MB of files (3 JPEG + 3 RAW) every time I press the shutter. Which takes 11 seconds. Per frame.
Then I twigged that the SD card I bought back in 2011 probably isn't the quickest. One quick trip to Amazon later, I had a 170MB/s card that can clear a 3-frame buffer in 4 seconds. (Those of you paying attention will notice that 60 x 4 170; perhaps the GX7 can't use all that bandwidth? I tested a 80MB/s card too [9 seconds], so the 170MB/s card really does seem to be doing the job.)
My old camera feels like a new camera. Bargain. Cheers James! :-)

As always an interesting and entertaining video. I use the G9 as well and often bracket but only when on a tripod. Did I understand correctly that you hand hold and bracket? I know the G9 stabilisation is excellent so I guess it could be possible.
Another good fun and informative video. You say you are a great believer in the rule of thirds but a lot of the pictures on your site have the subject smack bang in the middle. I like those photos but wonder what thinking led to your choice of composition.
I must admit I have found myself having a preference for A mode lately. Mostly because I find in auto with my GX80 it tends to give priority to the lowest possible F stop over all other factors. Which might be a good idea with say an F3.5 to F5.6 kit lens for light purposes. However, it is frustrating when using my 20mm F1.7mm prime. Because it makes nailing the focus difficult on the go due to the very shallow depth of field and it affects the sharpness of the lens a little. I find my prime works best at F2.8 as an all round compromise in focus ease and sharpness of image.
I can change the aperture even on auto mode but then it does things with the autofocus system. So it is just easier to switch the A mode for daily shooting.
The other day I did some evening shots of moving Goldwing motorcycles in Llandudno, my home town. So I used the prime lens as it is the fastest glass I have and of course, because the subjects were moving in low light. Switched to S mode as I wanted a high enough shutter speed to get results that were not completely unusable with blur. Set the camera to M burst mode and hammered away. It was really pushing the limits of the camera system to be honest. I got some very nice results with moving subjects though. Bikes lit up with neon lighting and dull backgrounds. The camera was working overtime. I think I really did hit the limits of my current camera and M4/3 system. A good 75% of the burst shots I took were unusable though due to the harsh conditions for a mid range enthusiast camera. The static shots all came out great as I had time to compose and set up. Even in darkness.
Around me were lots of people using Canon full frame cameras and Nikon cameras with MUCH bigger glass. My camera looked like a toy next to theirs and yet understanding the conditions, the capabilities of my lens and body meant I was able to squeeze some nice shots from it.
I don't often shoot in Aperture Priority, but I sometimes do. I learned to use AUTO ISO too, when I discovered my Canons made the same choices I should, but more reliably.

As you said, you would tilt the camera and not know why. Same here. I really like the leveler feature in my camera and almost always have it on.

It's mentioned in one of Ansel Adams' books, it really is a thing. I stopped worrying about my difficulties when I read that!
Canon has levelling aids in the viewfinder for some of its DSLRs, including the 80D, but it's not very good.

I love my G9 and love Back-button focus. Nice tip about bracketing. I need to set that up. I always have to go to the menu to change that. I generally shoot in Auto ISO and I'll think I'll try manual. One thing that I don't like about the G9 that the G7 DID NOT do, was when in Auto ISO, but in Manual mode, the light meter would tell you if you were off or not and you could adjust the aperture or the shutter to get it back to 0. With the G9, it is always stuck at 0 (as the G9 is always working to compensate--usually with ISO) and it makes me a bit lazy to even check my readings. Kind of like my rear-view camera in my car. I often find myself relying on that instead of actually turning my head. :-O
I like back button focus for a different reason, recomposing a shot after getting focus on the subject. Whereas if you leave it defaulted to half shutter depress you will just ruin that setup or have to rely on the focus point. Back button focusing lets me leave focus point where I like it and just move the aim of the camera to put my subject in a better spot compositionally (not a real word I know).
Hey James, how early do you get up to get your shots? What time are these videos taken at (roughly)? I'm not a morning person haha trying not to have to change.
Thanks for sharing, James. I think why these video was requested so much is not to replicate the settings but to get your insight about why you choose this or this setting instead. I try as well to keep ISO 200 with my G9 as long as I can, especially if I shoot a non moving object because the IBIS is insanely effective and if you let the "auto ISO" it will go higher than necessary. I will consider ordering one of your prints : the Hallstatt lake one. But I don't mean to bother you, but I think you spelt it wrong in your website, I believe it is written Hallstatt and not Halstatt (excuse me if I'm wrong)...
James...I have the Lumix G7....I'd like to try some of the settings you mentioned....Is that possible given that we have slightly different cameras? I'm assuming the settings would be the same. You also mentioned back-button focusing....Is that a custom button that you created?

I’m in a similar boat Nigel.... I’m going for my first system after using a Sony RX100v compact. I do fall towards the G9 and M4/3 due to the lens size and the cost of them. FF mirrorless still have to have large lenses and that’s purely physics plus the expense for good Sony glass is way out of my price range
@@richarddutchholland4780 , I'm glad I'm not the only one, lol. Sony in my opinion are far too expensive and personally I cannot justify the expense. Fujifilm I'm very fond of and like the weather sealed xt range and lenses and not too bad prices, but I have also had Panasonic thrown in the mix and I face a big dilema. I really want to start to better enjoy my photography and sadly I'm not at present as I detest lugging heavy kit around.

We just got back from Wales, pretty sure we were in the same area as you, loved it! But frustrating photos wise, lots of good photos but those I put most effort into, (long walks, up early) that sort of thing, disappointing. At least the wife got some good shots on her mobile! Think I better get a new hobby. Anyway thank you for your videos, even the wife enjoys your humour and delivery.
I use auto ISO unless I'm in extreme settings or the image just looks really noisy
How do you enable to level gauge so that it displays? I want to feel like a fighter pilot too, but I can't find the setting for the life of me!
Three months for a bedding in process...hmmm...I am going on 5 years and still not quite there with my venerable OM-10. Of course, I am using vintage glass mostly...so many of the settings I preset to take the burden off of knowing my camera "blind". Just too many functions...so I find the one's most relevant and focus on those in my armature usage.
Do you use 3 photos when bracketing or more? And did you shoot in 3:2 format when had a different camera in the past?

See if you can answer this ? I have a question about my G9. Can you switch Off the I.S in the body for taken stills. I know you can switch it of on the lens, if your lens has a switch, but in the menu it only lets you switch off I.S for video and not for stills. For stills in the menu is gives 2 options, full I.S and another for panning, which has a Hand and Arrow on it, but not Off option. On my GX80 is has an option to switch off but not on the G9 ? I'm losing sleep, lol. Many Thanks
can you have auto iso exposure compensation in Manual Movie mode for 4k25 and 4k60? basically i need to fix both shutter speed and aperture and then have the iso compensate exposure for me while the clip is running to maintain a constant exposure between dark and light. currently i'm using a variable ND to manually compensate because it doesn't have this feature on my G85.
Greetings, I am thinking of buying a lumix g9, but I have a question, plus a query, I use the manual mode and I come from a reflex camera (nikon d7000), how can I configure so that the electronic viewfinder of the lumix works as the optical viewfinder of my nikon?

is g9's 4k downsampled from 6k or 5.9k? and, if so, does the "digital zoom" option do the recording by downsampling from that initial 6/5.9, or from the already downsampled 4k?

Hi James! Random question... about G9 settings... so not totally random... I've been shooting a GX85 for 2 years and I love it. Got a G9 a couple of months ago and can't work out why when I download the images they are all out of order. So if I take a sequence of images when I download them they don't appear in the sequence they were taken. GX85 doesn't have this problem. I download to my iPad to cull and then upload them to my Mac from there. Do you know if there is a setting somewhere to control this or if my camera just hates me?
