Most beginner photographers need to hear what you're saying here, we're used to smartphone photos and we think that should take like those on a camera so a bit of deprogramming is need to start fresh and on good bases. Thank you 🎉
"I basically look bread as a microaggression on the world." 🤣
You have great presenter personality. Very interesting video. I did come to this video from a videographers stand point however still really worth while. Thanks for your time and energy spent making this.
love how my old 5.1mp sony cybershot w5 makes better pictures than that 18mp cam xD
Use any mode where the Exposure Value is changeable by you. This should be the only consideration after a sharp subject. The number of YTers who have blurted extraordinary word counts, only to never use the EV dial, baffles me.
Everything is better with a beer, or two.. or six
i smashed the LIKE button @10:05 when the man said he doesn’t delete anything 🙌🏽 HALLELUJAH 🙌🏽 arkive/preserve, don’t delete/destroy 💫
DJI Pocket is great. Personally, I would only use it for handheld videos and a tripod for videos with the big camera. The downside is only one card slot, so no real-time backup. The image is good enough in good lighting.
Bad photos can always be great photos.
This depth stuff is great! It has been gnawing at me for ages, I would usually blame my lens (I shoot fixed, 23 mm), never got around to thinking about it, well, in depth. Thanks!
I say "take". There's something in the world and I'm taking it into my camera. I also draw. If I'm drawing something from life, I don't say I'm "making" a picture. I say I'm drawing something.
It's very unlikely you'd ever be stopped from taking pictures at a tourist landmark like the Grand Mosque or the Louvre museum. I have lived in the UAE for 16 years as a professional photographer and haven't been asked once to delete a picture. Load of rubbish.
James, great video. I would like to seek your input as I am an amateur photographer shooting with the Fuji X system (XT4 and XH2). I am looking to pick up a Leica to shoot documentary/landscape/street photography. Would you recommend the Q or the M system? I am a bit weary on the Q since it seem to have quite a few overlapping features with my current set up. However, the M is a bit steep on the monetary aspect. If I were to get the M, I might have to start off with some third party lens, which I've also been told would not be a complete Leica experience. What are your thoughts? Highly appreciate it.
I love how you brake the "shoot to protect the highlights" rule! There ARE no rules! (except the ones you make)
@13:05 You mean like the 180 degrees shutter rule? 😁
Combining elegance and luxury kislux
One of the first things my dad thought me was use aperture priority, and honestly besides the old DLSR unable to catch the moment fast enough during low light conditions, it has been very useful. Hopefully I'll get a mirrorless camera soon.
Meanwhile: I'm praying for my drives to catch fire so I don't need to organise my files. Anything I was feeling at the time I've already published.
The covid lockdown has just started..... and here I am, watching this in June of 2024..... jeez.....
My experience of taking photos has been 1. Using my dad's DLSR (Nikon D90) to take photos during my middle school event and during family trips. 2. Using my phone or Nikon W100 to take photos during family trips (actually for family trips, I brought these first). 3. Using my phone during a highschool event 4. And currently using my phone during college events and outings Honestly the Nikon W100 is good enough for taking photos, but the menus are locked in the simple, probably meant for children menu (I mean, I guess I was, but, I just felt unsatisfied with the settings that I was able to change). And when the XT30 was released I somehow convinced my parents to bring me to an XT30 showcase event in a well known camera store. I definitely liked how compact it was, and ever since I've been looking into the XT3, now with some college awards money that I'm getting, I'm going to buy an XT3 since that alone is overall better than the XT30, now I initially wanted to get the XT30, but the price difference for a used one isn't that far apart, and the longer record time and the internal F log recording is very interesting, although I like taking photos, I'm also interested in video.
its a cheep camera,,, your expectations are re the issue this is for point and shoot , not portraits
ISO stands for International Organization for Standardization, a non-governmental organization that sets standards for many industries, including photography.
Great video, and makes a ton of sense! Looks like your gear page may need some updating :)
I rarely click subscribe after only one and a half videos watched on someone’s channel. But your content sir made me hit that button.
Beautiful photos that showcase the concepts that you're talking about. I particularly like those orange towers. Thank you for the awesome video. I'll be thinking of this next time in out with my camera.
Ha! I didn't think I'd commented on this video and lo and behold, who is the last one to comment? Little old me! 😁😁It's weird watching not only your first video but also watching it five years on! 🤣🤣Time flies when you're having fun!
Question about storage - how important is hardware degradation over time? I've got old negatives from film days. They last for decades. What about those old hard drives that might lose data or fail to spool up just because they get old? Any thoughts?
Great video James. I love the humour at the end.
"I hate rules in photography, as a rule" is just pure gold 🥇
Great video
Great video. I did get an L bracket but it cost almost nothing.
If you're in the gym, you're not out taking photos. Check mate, "Go to the gym more" Andys. Well I guess you could take photos at the gym. But then the police get involved... Better to just not go.
Hey James new to the channel! I really enjoyed hearing your thoughts on this topic, as a video first person, this reminded me when I first started going down the visual journey. If as a new Photographer/Videographer you find yourself not know what to shoot because of the endless options, what focal lengths to shoot, what composition, aperture, iso, etc. Limit your options! Limiting your options may sound like a bad thing when you're first beginning, but ironically the process of limiting yourself helps you refine your thought process on an individual factor, allowing oneself to practice more of that skill. For example most of us could can communicate, but we didn't start with telling our life stories. We started with learning the sounds of each alphabet, practice writing out each individual letter, putting letter together to form words, Learning what the formed words meant. Putting words into a sentence, putting sentences to form a paragraph. You get the point. So, I like to refer to the concept as the three C's, Constraints Creates Creativity. Similar to how back in English class the teacher gave us a topic to write about because they knew that most of the students wouldn't even know where to start. Thanks for the video James!
3 minutes in and i still dont know what the lens is
Sony 24-50
please do a storage and saving cycle video
I don't know why, but you keep reminding me of Kipper the Dog if he grew up and picked up photography. Your thought-out yet chill approach to things is seriously captivating in a way. This is a gem of a channel.
i got a nice camera bag for 50 bucks on amazon you dont need to spend alot
your video is way over exposed for when your showing the photos
some of your photos are crazy exposed my man distracted me from the subject in them
You have yourself a NAS, there is no reason to keep memory cards. Transfer them all to your NAS. Format those cards. Sounds more like an OCD issue than fear of losing a photo.
great video. Thanks for showing the editing process. I really like your aesthetic, so it's great to see how you arrived there.
I got a cheap gradient filter for my phone since I figured that I wouldn't get a camera for a long while, but that might change in the next few months, but anyway. The reason why I got that filter for my phone is that it doesn't have enough dynamic range for me to handle the bright sky and dark landscape, I either blow out the sky or dim it, so that filter has been pretty helpful.
Me watching the storage section with every photo I've ever taken with my camera on my laptop's SSD
I know it's just a bit of a joke online (about British people mostly) but thank you for saying "bottle of water" at 4:14
06:30 "There will always be videos from places like iceland, but today I'm here to show you other supermarket chains are just as viable"
Fascinating video again. Things I hadn’t thought of. Love your videos James.
I was just finally settled on monochrom, your photos have me questioning that decision. Well done.
Thinking of buying an XT2 or XT3 along with a Viltrox 33mm f1.4. Still considering if the XT3 is worth the extra money, the video and AF features are very enticing. Since I do plan to use the camera for video, I think it would be best to get the XT3, but I'm still not sure.
Your style seems to be minimalism based on a select color, which is very focused. Less is more.
First video of yours I saw was from some of the work you did in Portugal. I thought "oh wow. Those photos must be before editing". Then I checked out your portfolio, figured now what your work is about, and now I have a new favorite photographer. I love how you use light to tell the intended story. I'm inspired and can't wait to try to incorporate some of these techniques into my own photos.
