  • In this video, Carlo Matos, an Azorian-American author and professor, prepares an Azorian dish that he remembers from his childhood, and reflects on its cultural and personal significance. Thanks to Carlos (and his friend and fellow chef, Sandro) for their time, and for the delicious food.

I can totally relate! My parents fixed up the basement of their home and that’s the only living space we could really use other than bedrooms and bathrooms. The real kitchen, dinning room and living room were either for show or only used when we had guests!!! We Acoreans are odd balls.

I bought some octopus stew from a local Portuguese store. First time trying it. I know I probably shouldn't, but I thought it needed a squeeze of lemon juice and I tried it. Very tasty! Thanks for sharing.

Thank you for the recipe but mostly for the narration and history. Your right about the culture, the house with a room with the special furniture that we as children were not allowed to play in that room. I was born in Fall River, Ma, My parents from Sao Miguel, many of the Azorians moved to Mass. either New Bedford or Fall River. Each Portuguese family's home look so much alike but when they cooked it was amazing. Thank God I have cousins that can cook and do it in the same traditional way that my parents and grand parents cooked. Thanks Again

Salazar wasn't kicked out of the country, he had a stroke in 1968 and died in 1970. Salazar was head of the fascist regime since 1932. In 1968 he had a stroke and was replaced by another fascist named Marcello Caetano, that took his place from 1968 to 1974. In April of 1974, the 'Carnations Revolution' ended almost 50 years of a brutal autocratic fascist regime.

I would have to agree, I came looking for an authentic recipe and though I got a heartfelt family story I was left flat for a recipe. Sorry guys, thumbs down

I wanted a recipe, what I got was 4 minutes of monolog. Others might enjoy it, but not my cup of tea...not what I was looking for in a cooking video.
