Similar but different, just how it was meant to be. Its a customers choice. Choices is what people want. Nobody is going to choose one of them because it can or not stay within 1/2 second of the other on a track. Looks, ride, style, price. Its all good. Thanks for the vid.
245hp porsche vs 300hp bmw. if they had used the cayman s, which puts out 295 hp (assuming the 2008 model is used here) then there would be no contest.
So.... The Cayman is 6.000£ more than the BMW. The Cayman S is even more expensive...maybe it's faster than the 135i. Invest 7-8k£ into the 135i (to be as expansive as the Cayman S) only for performance and let's see which one is the fastest
@motomango no your right about the drifting being the slowest way to take a corner, but i did not get the part of your other post about front wheels drive cars drifting. but thats it.
If I'm not mistaken, that was the old Cayman with the 25 less hp, no limited slip diff, and the old gearbox. I'm curious to know how the new model will fare.
yeah it very well might be but I think in order for that to be possible the cayman would have to be slightly redesigned and changed a little, when you look a 911 turbo the front grill is better for intake there are side intakes, better wing, and it has a wide rear end for better control, so if porsche reworked those factors into the cayman then maybe it would be faster.
So much of this has to do with driver ability. I've never driven a 135, but I did just test drive a Cayman this afternoon and I've got to say, that's a badass car, regardless of whichever wins on this UK show...
@TheCarVlogger That would be a race. But I think Porsche is really selling its badge here - for the same price tag, 1 series beats it everytime. I mean, the 1M Coupe (340hp)costs as much as the Cayman (245hp) here in Portugal (73.000€). Ridiculous.
I own a 987.2 Cayman it is the best car I’ve ever driven in medium and high speed corners. Testing it on orange cones in the parking lot and a drift test is a joke. The low center of gravity with the mid-engine flat6 is amazing at 140 mph in big sweeping corners. The grip, feel, control and low curb weight make it an amazing car. Drive one if you get a chance. (I’ve owned 3 BMW’s and a 911 and the Cayman is the most pure sports car experience when it comes to agility, balance and handeling.)
@RicardoSS85 Well yes obviously, that was assumed. It'd be ridicules to put a cayman R against a 135i. I was talking about upping the game and using top of the line 1 series and cayman.
@posro1988: thank u for clearing that up... I feel like I thought a bit now. It's a good thing that there's always a smart geeky person on CZcams to correct other people... thank u
Fifth Gear is actually a pretty old show with more than 10 seasons. It was supposed to give straight on facts while Top Gear is more about entertainment. This is their own show.
the old cayman with no diff, a tall ratio 5 speed box and a 2.7 simply isnt powerful enough to beat the beemer! the new 2.9 with a better six speed gearbox, an lsd and more power would be a good comparison. both great cars!
A BMW beating a Porsche. What is this world coming too. Indeed. Perhaps the Porsche needed a set of Michelin Pilot Sport Cup tires, a warm up lap and then it would nail the corners. Personally I lose the backend on mine in corners all the time but only because I nail it to the wall. A BMW will NOT stand up to race track abuse all day and then service as a grocery getter all week. A Porsche will hammer nails at the track all day and then drive you home. As a car collector I speak from experience.
I'm not saying the Bimmer's slow...but the cayman guy said it, "it's not gonna be a fast lap time, but it was fun", If they had one consistent race driver qualifying both cars...i don't know if it would've turned out like this. Good fun though. There's a 335i that runs around town here...he's really quick. Only a tune and cone filters. Runs low 12's. Pretty ridiculous for what it is (leather clad GPS grocery getter)
I think if Porsche wasn't worried about the Cayman eating into the 911 Carrera market the Cayman would have been a nicer car and could have easily smoked the 135i. It's a shame how they sort of held it back.
maybe but the 911 turbo and Gt2 have blistering 0-60's and top speed's Im not saying it isnt possible but I doubt that a fully engineered cayman is going to get from 0-62 mph in 3.4 seconds anytime soon which is what the new turbo is capable of
@JVlaSSaCrE And why is the boxster for barbies? Because it's the cheapest of the range? So the gallardo would also be a barbie car because it's the cheapest lamborghini.
@nomainreason The Porsche may be a bit 'overpriced' but at least it doesn't have turbos and its intercoolers to maintain. Also, it seems to be more of a driver's car since it has more confidence around the corners but BMW does better in the straights.
Easy, TTS is just epic looking, Caymen looks pretty good, don't understand why people think it's ugly, but I think it's epic too. Though as I said earlier, 2009 TTS is amazing. I think the 911 series are ugly, but that's me.
That last drift in the beamer was well better than the score it recieved.
Similar but different, just how it was meant to be. Its a customers choice. Choices is what people want. Nobody is going to choose one of them because it can or not stay within 1/2 second of the other on a track. Looks, ride, style, price. Its all good.
Thanks for the vid.
Those guys are brilliant!!!
man i'm really feeling that 135, and its a lil more practical
They should have used the s model for a more fair competition.
The base one is already 6000 $ more! But you can't compare both!
Tiff is also the master of mind games..."put your foot in it!"...classic
After THREE 3 series, I just got a 2010 135i, AMAZING car.
Nicely edited. I like the way the extraneous comments (Plato complaining about how someone had adjusted his seat in the 135i) were cut.
245hp porsche vs 300hp bmw. if they had used the cayman s, which puts out 295 hp (assuming the 2008 model is used here) then there would be no contest.
Maybe they are testing pound for pound
So.... The Cayman is 6.000£ more than the BMW. The Cayman S is even more expensive...maybe it's faster than the 135i. Invest 7-8k£ into the 135i (to be as expansive as the Cayman S) only for performance and let's see which one is the fastest
***** X5 is for idiots.
Let's see which one holds it's value in 10 years ;)
think about price for comparability, the BMW in this spec is already £4000 cheaper than the Porsche when new.
@motomango no your right about the drifting being the slowest way to take a corner, but i did not get the part of your other post about front wheels drive cars drifting. but thats it.
Do you think the new cayman 2.9 (265 hp ) with pdk transmission would be faster around the track??
excelenteeeee!
nice video!!!
Tiff was on the original Top Gear (from all the pre-2002 series) along with Jeremy Clarkson.
@motomango how do you drift in a front wheel pocket rocket?
what about top gear? has its down sides, but must be better?
how are the tests fair if the drivers are different for both?
Awesome!
@1MoneyTalks oh right on..which state does ur friend go to school in? Im in Southern California..it might be kinduv different out here.
Why wouldnt you use Cayman S instead of base for this test?
Dude tiff is from the original top gear. This is more an intelligent show while top gear is an entertainment based show.
@TheCarVlogger No. Either 135i vs Cayman S or 1M Coupe vs Cayman R.
@Rakloro 3.0l in line six Twin turbo-
I have one...the '35 is misleading tho
@megadallas16 damn dude..what state are you in? I'm down here in SoCal..
Nice compare!
135i has gotten amazing reviews, cayman is still pretty cool though. cayman s would be more fun but of course considerably more expensive.
these boys can drive
And the fact of the matter is, park both cars on the street, and the Cayman is the one that get's looked at.
It's good looking from any angle.
does the caymen s have a turbo?
cool, why no High Quality option?
@gekados Got to agree with you on this one! Love this car :D
If I'm not mistaken, that was the old Cayman with the 25 less hp, no limited slip diff, and the old gearbox. I'm curious to know how the new model will fare.
would've easily won the agility and track test then, and it would've been easier for the cayman if it was the facelifted S model
these guys have the best damn job in the world!
bring back Tiff and Jason
Why not the Cayman S ?
yeah it very well might be but I think in order for that to be possible the cayman would have to be slightly redesigned and changed a little, when you look a 911 turbo the front grill is better for intake there are side intakes, better wing, and it has a wide rear end for better control, so if porsche reworked those factors into the cayman then maybe it would be faster.

@codyschuyler really? it says nothing about the driveability of it?
whats with the chinook?
?
I saw 2 great automobiles on a track; you need to get off that crack fella!
this is their own show
@felon2099 happy to have helped
The current Z4 M Coupe is still using the 3.2L straight-6 engine from the E46 M3. It's an N/A!
@1MoneyTalks Why is that? Do you have personal experience with this matter?
@TheCarVlogger That would be a race. But I think Porsche is really selling its badge here - for the same price tag, 1 series beats it everytime. I mean, the 1M Coupe (340hp)costs as much as the Cayman (245hp) here in Portugal (73.000€). Ridiculous.
@rancid253 Off course, if your still in collage and have a porsche, well i don't have to explain more.
@neilkayton How do you know?
@Lev08e39M5 do you have an M5? if you do and you come to visit transylvania one day, please take me for a ride :D
cheers
And I'd STILL take the Cayman over that assembly line boring yuppie box. LOL
+Anthony Jaswinski assembly line? where do you think the cayman is built lol
Well, i love both Companies, so I don careee =)
new 135 looks like a new dawn though
In space by PDK Martians
@blinstrub
they do make a 1 M
Wow, without an lsd, Tiff's such a good driver.
bimmer was without lsd too though
"Jason will take the baby B.M." hahahaha
I am biased but I drove both and I love the BMW. I can even drive it all winter in New England. Try that in the Cayman. Both are nice though
50 lb dog food bag makes the front end perfect. My dads 911 does the same

thanks, can u afford one?
@rancid253 Yes, why not?
135i's did not come with an LSD at least not in the states
I think this is almost like watching TopGear if it were being hosted by the Stig and one of his friends.
i love my 135i :)
@RicardoSS85 Well yes obviously, that was assumed. It'd be ridicules to put a cayman R against a 135i. I was talking about upping the game and using top of the line 1 series and cayman.
7:01 was a great shot
7:01
SHOw ME THE CARFAX DAMMIT
@posro1988: thank u for clearing that up... I feel like I thought a bit now. It's a good thing that there's always a smart geeky person on CZcams to correct other people... thank u
Porsche Cayman, driven by touring car legend, Tiff Niedell. BMW 135i, driven by touring car legend, Jason Plato
Note: not the Cayman S. Granted, that one is quite a bit more expensive. In USA I think you can get only the S model, though.
No you can get the base cayman I have one and I love it.
I love da 135i :)
both are great modern cars but i would personally take the cayman
Fifth Gear is actually a pretty old show with more than 10 seasons. It was supposed to give straight on facts while Top Gear is more about entertainment. This is their own show.
somewhat agreed, but the BMW has four seats, that is a big difference.
135i is mine i love how it looks the cayman looks like a small car
@ad3v por que lo es
the old cayman with no diff, a tall ratio 5 speed box and a 2.7 simply isnt powerful enough to beat the beemer! the new 2.9 with a better six speed gearbox, an lsd and more power would be a good comparison. both great cars!
exactly, people think money is the answer..
pardon me, i just love porsches, no harm or intent of offense in any matter...
@SpiderValve3 that would be the best for both of us i think, so giver
A BMW beating a Porsche. What is this world coming too. Indeed. Perhaps the Porsche needed a set of Michelin Pilot Sport Cup tires, a warm up lap and then it would nail the corners. well c0nv1ct337, you can always check the wikipedia. afaic they are racing drivers & have racing experience
@vittoriostoraro im thinking of getting it aswell, haven't driven one yet but of all the things ive read about it it's quite attractive!
I'm not saying the Bimmer's slow...but the cayman guy said it, "it's not gonna be a fast lap time, but it was fun", If they had one consistent race driver qualifying both cars...i don't know if it would've turned out like this. Good fun though.

i thought they were about to run into eachother at 2:14 lol
the 135i really is a quick car. Its just a shame that it looks like its preggers
until i have my cayman s ill just have fun with my 01 mx5 :D
maybe but the 911 turbo and Gt2 have blistering 0-60's and top speed's Im not saying it isnt possible but I doubt that a fully engineered cayman is going to get from 0-62 mph in 3.4 seconds anytime soon which is what the new turbo is capable of
I feel like the bimmers last drift was better but w/e
God damn it!!! I cant afford neither of them. WTF!!!!!
@JVlaSSaCrE And why is the boxster for barbies? Because it's the cheapest of the range? So the gallardo would also be a barbie car because it's the cheapest lamborghini.
Haha and there will be an M1 soon.
So it will be much more fun!
2:11 :))))))) jason :)) he he he heyy
fifth gear is so much better than top gear atleast they do proper tests and shot outs with cars people buy unlike top gear
@Lev08e39M5 that's why more people like top gear XD
@nomainreason The Porsche may be a bit 'overpriced' but at least it doesn't have turbos and its intercoolers to maintain. Also, it seems to be more of a driver's car since it has more confidence around the corners but BMW does better in the straights.
I don't like the BMW 1-series but anything with a backseat and a usable trunk gets my vote out of hand.
why do youtube have stupid adverts??!!!!
My Cayman....favorite car in the world...one day I will have one!!!
Easy, TTS is just epic looking, Caymen looks pretty good, don't understand why people think it's ugly, but I think it's epic too. Though as I said earlier, 2009 TTS is amazing. I think the 911 series are ugly, but that's me.
i thought they were about to crash at 2:14
HE DID! XD
only works, if its available.
@ad3v Actually I have driven both and the beemer is the better allaround car. Porsche is way more fun on a track though!
@derek400004 beamers are the motorcycles....
