  • In this video I bring you along as I diagnose and repair a Chevy Trailblazer that has a blower fan that will not shut off. I show you why not to use a NAPA # BR532. Please refer to a shop manual for the proper repair and testing procedure.

      I wonder who the 78 idiots are that down voted this video. After watching this I now know which the correct part is for my vehicle and what all those extra wires are for. There is about 7 different versions of this thing depending on whether you have auto temp or manual.

    Exact Problem in my daughters 2007 Envoy with 120K miles on it, exact same problem with after market part. i would have never found the problem without this video. I followed the procedure in the video and it worked out so perfectly that i didn't have to stick the extra foam from the seal to bang my head against it! thanks Eric!

    I've come to the conclusion that you don't make these videos for the rest of us. These are just therapy for you. I agree with your comments 100% though. The replacement should be just as good as the OEM but they never are.

    Eric as I watched your video and you went to the "replacement" part I actually knew what was next. I have an 06 Chevy truck that had a no blower issue. Replaced the same part and had to rewire it also. Thanks for the humor!!

    Love the wine Eric. Especially if there is a little cheese to go along with it. Lol. Who hasn't heard that one, a million times. Actually for some reason, most DIYers think the pros never really experience that after market problem, because they got a magic parts connection or something that prevents it from happening to the pros. When you see the guy who owns the shop experience the same exact darn problem and handle it the same way they did, there is a sense of comrodery in that. At that point, two people of differing skill levels are brought together for a moment, where they both can agree, commiserate together and be on the same playing field for a bit. That's one thing your viewers get to experience with you, because you keep your videos basically uncut, as far as oops's and mistakes are concerned. We're all human and make mistakes, and the aftermarket parts devil comes up and bites us all from time to time, it's inevitable. You can walk up to anyone and tell a story about a new part not fitting or being bad right out of the box and most people will tell you their story to match and will have enjoyed talking to you after you leave. That's called commiseration, shows your human and is a great thing to do when you run into problems like that. So keep on keep'in on and we'll keep on listening because that's what makes you real to your viewers. Take care and whoever said you treat Mrs O bad is wrong. But there are some of those little jokey moments where you put her on the spot and we can tell that you heard about what you did wrong when the camera got turned off. But that happens to us all. Some times talking to the wife is like talking to an alien. Please take me to your leader, and if they only could, than we could talk to ourself and agree 100% with what was said. Take care, spoil Mrs O because she's a hard working woman and make the kids and dogs, laugh and bark, because that's what it's really all about Charlie Brown! :) Jpol.

    Big thanks for this video! My neighbor's Trailblazer had this exact problem last week. It killed the battery(original from '07, wouldn't charge). Swapped the battery and blower came on immediately. I popped the blower fuse (35 under hood), so she could drive it until I got the part. I got a duralast part from Autozone, and the wires were long enough to hook into the factory position. Searched and found your video to help swap it out. You helped make it a VERY easy swap, and I got a good laugh at your commentary!

    After watching your video a couple of times, I installed this on my wife's 2005 Buick Rainier. I was very skeptical at first, but it wasn't that bad after all, and it worked. I used the AC Delco brand. Thanks for the help.

    Had the identical problem with my 03 Trailblazer. Your post made it easy to perform the fix myself. Saved me from being raped by the dealership. The AC-Delco part was $60 from Amazon. THANKS SO MUCH FOR YOUR HELP!!!

    I love to hear you speak the truth about the after market parts like that. I've ran into it myself and it makes me swear through the rest of the job and usually half way through the next day, telling everyone about it. I would also like to let you know, that in the fields of plumbing and hvac they are experiencing the same thing, with the same results as you just experienced. Wasted time, modifications that shouldn't have been needed and also test the level of your creativity are usually the result. It's the way of manufacturing and until some big shot decides he can make more money by having everyone buy his parts because they are manufactured correctly, it isn't going to change. But keep ranting about it because were ok your side Eric. Thanks for the videos bud. Jpol.

    Eric, Thank you, Thank you, Thank you! My son is working gobs of overtime right now and his wife called with this same issue on their truck. I would have not known how to help her besides disconnecting battery or removing fuse. She stopped by and it tested just like you showed. I removed the module so he can go get the replacement part and we will put it on in a couple days. For now, at least, she doesnt have to worry about the battery running down or having to pull the fuse.

    I LIKE your videos I too own a tire an Auto Repair shop And when i'm not positive about a problem I watch one of your videos and you usually confirm what i was thinking. Your better than me with electrical. i'm not bad for having no auto school training but i can usually fix anything that rolls in. I can totally relate to all of your whining. i have all the same problems.     Good comments on the part fit vs. OE on aftermarket parts. I am very familiar with part sourcing with suppliers. Our process is this: we almost always use Tier 1,2,3 suppliers, they are usually the same suppliers that make parts for the new car build. We send them the blue prints for the part we need, they model it up, send part to us for engineering review, if part passes engineering review and testing, [extended durability, fit, finish, internal component specs] we sign off and release supplier sample for production. We then take 50-100 of the first production run and test all of them, to include tear down to verify manufacture to print. After this, we green light the part for release to commerce. The extra engineering, testing, validation steps add cost, but the part is right when we release to commerce. I was a tech 35 years ago and learned quickly on the difference with OE vs. aftermarket. It is hard to get the OE spec part today depending on where you are and the available part suppliers.

    Hi, I ordered part # ACDelco 15-81773 GM original equipment heating and air conditioning blower control module from Amazon.com. $56.82 plus shipping and sales tax, if any. After watching your very good video, I was aware of the possible issue with the blower motor lead being too short. This part number had more than adequate length to fit in the clip behind the blower motor housing and reach the motor connection. It was an easy install in a friend's 2004 Trailblazer. What a great job on the video, and I agree with your comments on the lack of support when a part does not fit. Although, I have to say, without challenges to overcome, how satisfying would life be. It should be right, though. Keep smiling and I'll check back on my next adventure.

    Have watched a lot of your videos, definitely have learned a lot i didnt know. Thank your for your time. Just wanted to say the module may have fit if you used dremel on corner of mounting tab. The n flipped it. Kind of like installing aftermarket radio kit.Thats why they give multiple holes i think to cover there end. I Probably wouldn’t of thought of it either at the time of working on it. You are an awesome tech doing it the way it should be done. Ill feel your pain too. Keep on keeping on

    Awesome video! This was EXACTLY the problem with my 2005. I kept searching for one that had a 3 pin socket. Ended up figuring it out that I could use one with a 5 pin socket with a 5 pin pigtail (supplied), duh only 2 pins hot plus small purple one needed, plus splicing, Anyway the dealer part wasn't even AC/DELCO, product of Mexico/Korea with GM approved gold stamps all over box. Thanks again

    Thanks for the information. I have a 2004 Envoy that the blower stopped working. I will check the restore pack since it started blowing when the key was off and then quit all together. I worked on CNC and PLC Controlled equipment till I retired. Never worked on cars electrical, which is very different then what I did. Also found problems with manufacturers over the years.

    As with any blower motor issue, which could be either non operative, single speed only, or stuck on, the resistor module could be the most likely cause of the malfunction. However, you also must include the thought that something probably caused the module to fail. If they run cool, they could last the life of the car. Usually though and after about five years or so, the blower motor bushings start to dry out as they are made from a self lubricating material called "Oilite". Oilite is used in small motor designs exclusively. It is a sintered bronze and oil mix bushing and will eventually wear and bind the blower motor shaft. Furthermore, the carbon commutator brushes have worn down by now, causing a pool of carbon powder shorting the commutator up and slowing the motor down. A stiff spinning motor shaft is a good clue, so check for that. Give the fan a good spin, if it stops very quickly, it's motor changing time. The increased currant draw from the tight motor shaft, over heats the control module (mosfet) component to it's failure point. Always change the blower motor along with the control module if it's an easy access design.

    I had the same problem, 2003 grand am,your replacement module looks like mine, blower motor bearing failure caused excess current flow through power FET switch at "resistor module" causing it to short and keep blower motor running until battery dead. Car belonged to niece and dead battery stranded her once already. I wanted a reliable repair and was tempted to replace module with a toggle switch. I instead ordered power FET from Digikey about 4 dollars and saved 80 dollars by repairing the module. The IRFBA1405P is a power MOSFET designed by international rectifier for automotive applications. You will need a hot soldering iron, the PC board sinks heat well. The MOSFET is the large 3 terminal device that is pressed against the finned aluminum heat sink. Melt a little solder on the iron and apply iron to all three FET leads, flow a little solder onto iron and leads to help conduct heat and when all solder is liquid FET will lift off. then flow all excess solder off this footprint use solder wick if U have any. trim the leads on the new FET to the right length and position the FET on PC board and solder each lead. Make sure no solder is Bridging any leads together. The FET is mounted face down on the PC, this is so the back can contact the aluminum heat sink. Thermal Heat Sink compound must be applied here to reliably conduct heat. Heat sink compound can also be got from Digikey or oddly best buy. You can maybe salvage old compound.
    Digikey is a large supplier of electronic components, been around a long time, they ship large qty or just one, I don't fear giving them my credit cart number. And my part came in 3 days normal shipping. I still had to pay 80 dollars for the blower motor but I could not fix that. If this were my vehicle I would have just replaced the module with a toggle switch, easy and reliable repair, but so far blower is working fine after 5 weeks.

    I'm starting to think that filming your work is a good stress reliever for you, Eric. Free therapy! Too bad more parts don't come with pads to beat your head on. BTW I'm a big fan of the crimp connectors. They have saved me many times. With the right crimper ( I use some made by Chanellock) it's had to get it wrong.

    I remember changing an AC compressor on a 95' buick roadmaster. One 10mm bolt made the job 3 hours instead of 30 minutes. So, NO, you are not whining. All that you said was necessary for the job. Lol. Good video.

      Took a buddy’s battery back to AutoZone, Duralast Gold 6 months old, the battery will charge to 12.4 but when you do a voltage drop test it goes to 3 VDC, so I read capacitance, did my math (a formula I have written on the wall in my shop) tested it and sure enough it doesn’t have the CCA as written on the top.
      Walk in smiling being nice, the manager sticks her little china meter on it, and said the battery is fine, but if it’s “fully charged” to 12.4 VDC her cheap meter uses calculated amps not true capacitance, she got a false reading.
      So I pointed that out, to which she informed me that Batteries don’t have amps, only the alternator does? Batteries are only voltage...I asked what this CCA thing on the tops means. Honestly I didn’t mean to laugh when she said that.
      After about a 5 minute lecture starting with Ohms law, then explaining the theory of an electrical circuit...she handed me a new battery.
      Voltage drop is now only to 11.2 VDC....imagine that.

    Just today I replaced a window regulator (Dorman) and the new part worked about 12 times then the cables broke. Chevrolet wants almost $600 for there part so back to Dorman we go. I hate crap parts but I hate overly expensive parts more. Great video Eric. I've been enjoying all the diagnostics and repairs.

      +wyattoneable idk i have an 05 trailblazer and in 2008 the fuel pump sending unit went on it gas gauge always reading empty when full and periodic bogging i replaced with delco full unit lasted 9 months shit the bed with same problems got a dorman and here we are going into 2016 still working great and no problems touch and go ive had problems with name brand and aftermarket in the end theyre in it together make money on car parts lol

    Wanted to say thank you for this video. I had a similar, but not exact problem and your diagnostic technique helped me isolate the problem on my TB. PS... the Delco part I got had more than enough slack for the blower motor wire, but still needed to do the splice into the orig. wiring. Seems like all replacements are like that for this part now.     Nice video. just replaced my module in my 06 TB. got two at a junkyard that were DOA. then found a acdelco part brand new on amazon for 55 bucks. worked a charm and the wires were long enough!!

      I'd not waste my time on a junkyard electronic part unless I can test it BEFORE buying it! You spent more time taking the used part out than the new part cost you, and the new one had a warranty! Wise to go OEM on this!

      @@avenged06x I have a 2002 TB EXT and am looking for a decent reasonably priced second one. I love mine (and do consider the fact that it's 18 years old now), but GM doesn't have anything in their newer (post 2008) lineup that is as good as mine is! I don't want the suburban or tahoe, and everything else is uniCRAPbody...AKA unibody. UniCRAPbodies are for cars, and cars can't pull a trailer with plywood, so I have no use for cars!

    That was one of your best! Man, that beating your head on that rubber pad was priceless. We all feel you on that after market crap. It really boils down to what Jesus said about the LOVE of money that causes all sort of injurious things. It won't end until Daniel 2:44 is fulfilled. Anyhow don't give up, look at the things you do have, not at the things you don't have or can't change.

    Eric the Gm resistor is the same way. I always forget to quote out time for the rewire and I'm as frustrated as you are. Gotta love this field

    I got to do the exact same thing tomorrow with my 06 trailblazer the way I'm going to do it is the way I took it off too tight to unplug these wires while they're locked including blower motor unscrew the resistor let it dangle hopefully I still got the same length of wire for the new part that I'm getting wrap it around and then screw in the resistor very good videos though I love watching your program learned a lot on other stuff

    I did like you said and the problem is fixed ! ! I did get the module from " standard" - ( red box ) and sure enough - wires about 1" to short ! ! so did like you did, " splice" Thanks for the vid-! !

    Those sealing crimp connectors are great. I do a lot of soldering repairing electronics and building drones but soldering isn't always the best thing especially on vehicles where there is so much vibration and major heat cycles. Soldered wires tend to get brittle and break in that environmentover time. A properly crimped and sealed butt connector is just as good if not better in this case.

    I love crimp connectors they have saved me from losing my mind when I remove crappy aftermarket stereos to find some clown has cut the wiring harness and left a mess of wires held together with tape.

    Excellent video. I fully sympathize with you. This kinda crap happens to me every day as well and it's very frustrating. The mindset where I work is to repair everything as cheaply as possible so sometimes the crap we get is even worse than the part you got. I always say that my hair didn't fall out, I pulled it out. I usually solder and shrink tube bout 99.9% of the time. It seems that every time I get lazy and use butt connectors it comes back to haunt me. Keep smiling {:-)

    Oh, i love this video, worked on trailers for 20 years, i ALWAYS ran into the same problem on trailer air valves, why in hell cant they just make the same valve they installed at the factory??? But NO, they always got to move the air line ports to the other side of the valve!!!!!!

    Thanks for the help, I treid to change mine . Got new one at NAPA. Didn't work. I went to my fav shop McDonalds Auto Repair Hebron Ohio and it was the small black relay that is next to it on Chevy S10 2000. LOL the last shop that looked at it gave me a 2 hr estimate to look in the dash LOL.

    To answer your question about solder or butt connectors....I have always soldered and heat shrunk....Love the little pad idea.

    I suppose that you could have cut the plug off of the old module and spliced that onto the new module, so that it could be replaced again in the future without having to do any wiring again.
    As per your question regarding solder or crimp and seal, I always solder and rarely use heat shrink. Never had an issue with old fashioned electrical tape. I do crimp on spade terminals when needed, because you don't have another option for that.

    I don't even work in the field, but I've always done all of my own repairs/maintenance and also for family and friends. I probably should have become a tech but i've always felt the best way to ruin a hobby, is to do it for 40 hrs every week. The only decent aftermarket is usually the OEM supplier, sometimes you can get lucky and get a truly improved part, but not often! My pet peeve is reboxing. Napa didn't make that part, so why the heck did they put it in a napa box? Carquest is actually even worse for this... I have yet to get a re boxed part I felt was OE quality, although they all "say" they are... I know you don't have time for such things Eric, but you should give rock auto a shot sometime when time allows. You can choose the grade and manufacturer, so once you figure out the ones that last you're ahead of the game. (well until the supplier cheaps out) . I know way up north here in canada even with shipping rates often doubling the part cost, it's usually still cheaper then going to my local parts store!

    You know I wanted to be a mechanic till I became one.now I'm thinking, " you got anything else?" Haha. I do like your videos there always informative. Here's a good one for you I had a guy put diesel in a gas truck he ran it till it started sucking up diesel and died, then killed the battery cranking it and burned up the starter to the point he melted the solder on the solenoid. And told me he drove it back and parked it and didn't do anything. Talk about chasing your tail when everything checks our working but the fuel don't burn. Long story short the diesel not burning while he was plowing with it caused the oil to get diluted and trashed the bearings and cam and the rings on piston 5 broke. So it got a rebuilt engine

    I feel your pain Eric with parts that you have to bastardize to make them work. As for Napa, they use to have some pretty good parts 20 or so years ago. Now when I go there I'll get the same part that I could pick up at Advance Auto or Autozone and Napa will charge about 20% more. The last time I went there they had to order the part from another Napa warehouse. Well, lo and behold, they charged me shipping to get the part. So, I rarely deal with them anymore. Take care...

      South Main Auto Repair Yep, you're exactly right and I reached that conclusion years ago about the quality of parts. As for the engineer(s) that designed that part makes you wonder where their heads were at. I work with some of the same mentality at work, and I sometimes get into some heated debates of how to go about a design of a project, so I can relate to what you're saying.

    Man o Man... you are a comic, I've told you this before, but the rubber head banging pad was the one that would've been your money maker on the comic circuit . I still think you should put in the bleachers for the public. You have the talent, you just need a manager.
