  • Clinton Fowler & Gypsy Tales debate weather radio communication in supercross can be an awesome addition to the sport.
    My guest today is Clinton Fowler, the man behind the fantastic statistics that you hear each and every weekend on the Supercross broadcast as well as the fantastic online resource wewentfast.com and his own instagram @fowlerfacts. Clinton gave up his high-paying job at Microsoft developing the XBox to work in the action sports world with Red Bull and wound up developing the sports first detailed database almost on accident. I am a big storylines guy in the sport and no matter what story you throw Clintons way, he has a stat to either back it up or shoot you down. This was a highly enjoyable episode of the podcast with an extremely interesting and knowledgeable guy!
    If you enjoyed the stats side of this show, you can sign up to wewentfast.com to get access to Fowlers great database and a ton of unique stories that I doubt you have ever heard!

    I’m all for it, but I think we should just record the racers. Remember a few years ago after the race with Eli and Justin exchanging those heated words, that’s all my feed would let me watch and it definitely built up the hype for the next races. But I draw the line and letting mechanics and racers communicate. Racing is supposed to be raw, telling a rider to “go inside” or “jump the whoops this lap” will just kill it for me! Let them race! ✊🤘

    Unpopular opinion apparently, I'm not for the comms. I'm in favor of one-way communication for safety reasons that would be strictly from officials. Telling the riders there's a red cross flag or something like that I understand and for that sake I support.
    I don't like the idea of communications with the team during the entire race. I don't like the idea of the team being able to say, "He's coming behind you, take the inside line" "Oh, now he's going to try and pass you on the right".
    Part of what I enjoy so much about SX/MX racing is that when push comes to shove it comes down to the rider. Yes, they have support on their bike with the teams and I'm not discounting that but it's not a team sport. MX is an individual sport and the rider either wins or not based on their own ability on the track. Part of that talent is being able to adapt to situations and plan your moves accordingly. I think team communications takes that element of talent away from the riders. I don't know how else to say it and it's probably the wrong word, but it removes the "purity" of racing.

      Im with you except id like to hear riders and team members micd up so we can catch the raw emotions atleast not necessarily communicating. But im also for having gopros not helmet mount but chest mounts or bar mount. That type of raw footage for a heater lap in qualifying or get the 1pv from the guy trying to make a move on someone ahead

    • @xlankex
      @xlankex Před 28 dny

      @@superegghead13 the conversations parts could be done. I've worked on TV production crews before and it could be recorded by the production. As for GoPros I think it sucks to not have them anymore. Not being allowed to mount on helmets is pretty ridiculous in my opinion.

      @@superegghead13 I don't see how they are any more dangerous than a visor. I haven't seen any studies that indicate a correlation between a helmet mounted GoPro and neck injuries. At best we have one off incidents where someone happened to have a helmet mounted camera, which is coincidental at best. We also have what must be thousands of crashes with helmet mounted cameras and without neck injuries. I just don't buy it. There are also neck injuries without helmet cams too. I need to see some data before I'm convinced.

    I've tried to get my wife interested. I'm 46, we're pretty "well adjusted" at this point, lol, I told her she'd probably find some of the guys hot. She got into F1 big time, maybe more than me at her prime, but their constant shenanigans soured us both on the sport a few years ago and haven't gone back.

    @Mason-fj5dh Před 29 dny +2

    Yh you don’t even have to have communication, just have these guys micd up, that includes mechanics and the team in the watch tower etc… so much potential in that

    • @bmotomo421
      @bmotomo421 Před 29 dny

      @Mason-fj5dh Yup. That would bring enough drama without forcing the rider to listen to distracting messages. And keep from putting a cloud over the races in terms of legitimacy. Unfortunately, the coms idea is likely being forced upon the sport by the network. RC and RV made a point to mention it on their podcast. Right after the very mysterious finish line, jump debacle. Now Fowler is saying it's inevitable. They'll sell it as a benefit to the riders in regard to their safety. And then sell it to the fans by telling them they'll be more involved than ever before. The most likely reason, though, is to gain even more control of the races. Basically, giving them the ability to adjust how the race plays out. And to manufacture drama for the broadcast. Which doesn't really make sense if the sport is as bad ass as we think it is. By the way, why do you guys feel such a need to compare moto with F1? Driving and riding are not at all comparable. Anyway, a lot like in NASCAR. Where week after week, they mysteriously get a yellow caution flag with 6 or 7 laps remaining in the race. It's never one of the front runners who cause it. Always a back marker. My prediction, if coms are implemented, we'll see more restarts than ever before. As well as more unexplainable incidents like the finish line jump thing. Which we have yet to see more than one camera angle of. Even though it was filmed from a few more angles. But it just so happens to be the incident that brought on the coms conversation. #getoutyourtinfoilhats

    I think moto is so different than other motor sports like nascar or F1. There's so much going on in super and motocross, with the ruts, jumps, braking bumps and everything in between the amount of concentration it requires for the pros at this level where a .5 a second is a lifetime is insane. Even if they have designated areas where they'll talk to their guy I still feel like it would be a distraction, even the slightest lapse in concentration can be that .5 second difference. I think it's cool from a spectator standpoint but I bet 90% riders would hate it, just my thought.

    I had some experience with communications during my car racing days.. My dad was on the pit/stand end. Not a talker, which was fine. When he did it, was a huge distraction whilst pulling 4 G's in a downhill sweeper at 120+ mph. He could not see me. Waste of money for me. I think being mic'd up for fun would be great. F-bombs all day, with zero back talk.

    I think it would hamper racing. The dynamic changes and would take away from the riders instincts. If it could be done in a way to ONLY be used for alerting riders of red flags or blue flags, maybe that would be a good thing. But i guarantee very few riders want to talk to or take advice from someone looking out above. Leave the racing to the riders.

    I really think it could help for bad crashes. How ever it would just create a possible conflict with the team saying do this do that. I’m sure it affect the mental confidence in the riders and make them second guess what they are doing, they will just end up feeling like I’m not riding my race.
    Would make others so reliant on the spotters their riding style and confidence would change. Most definitely just cause arguments in the pits amongst the riders, mechanics and spotters. Just who ever is out the telling him how to race his race. A lot of blaming will happen, and some of these guys already blame there bike and mechanic when they just didn’t have a good race🤷🏻‍♂️ 1:31
