- Clinton Fowler goes in deep weather or not height really does matter in supercross and motocross.
My guest today is Clinton Fowler, the man behind the fantastic statistics that you hear each and every weekend on the Supercross broadcast as well as the fantastic online resource wewentfast.com and his own instagram @fowlerfacts. Clinton gave up his high-paying job at Microsoft developing the XBox to work in the action sports world with Red Bull and wound up developing the sports first detailed database almost on accident. I am a big storylines guy in the sport and no matter what story you throw Clintons way, he has a stat to either back it up or shoot you down. This was a highly enjoyable episode of the podcast with an extremely interesting and knowledgeable guy!
If you enjoyed the stats side of this show, you can sign up to wewentfast.com to get access to Fowlers great database and a ton of unique stories that I doubt you have ever heard!
I'm 5'11" and I feel it's the sweet spot. Bikes fit me well but still have height to leverage and muscle the bike when needed
I had the height conversation with Decoster not long ago… this is a neat data point, for sure. He brought up the point of height (on the high end), being an injury risk. Makes perfect sense. He thought the ideal rider was between 5.9 to 6.0.
Height has to match bike, a bike that feels flat and sitting on top of, of a bike that feels like you sit IN it. It’s all different there are winners from 6’2 to 5’3
being 5'6 120 i flew road racing and flat track. definitely struggle in deep ruts.
Your the same hieght as ricky carmichael, your welcome
@@andrewcastillo5003 if only i had a fraction of the talent
You just need to practice deep ruts and the technique to take them. I see 14 year olds doing the roughest of tracks with deep ruts suck as Tomahawk on the ruffness and Promise Land for deep stiff ruts. It just takes practice and determination to get better at that specific thing. You can do it just trust the process and give it time.
@@ryohonda you're also very light I'm 5'5 and I graduated high school at 130, so I assume you're young, when I was young I had a friend that raced A class and he told me ride on your toes and don't move your knees past your toes except in corners and what I learned when I applied that is with proper technique it's extremely awkward to go slow, now youtube is a lot better so the information to get better is here, keep riding brother you'll get it
@andrewcastillo5003 learn over the top of the bars made it a lot easier for me on my 450 squeeze the knees and don't hold on for dear life or ya will get more arm pump than laps done
Well, you guys helped push me over the edge. Dreamed of having a dirtbike for over 2 decades. Since watching the guard change from McGrath to RC, and listening to my father’s, uncles’ and grandfather’s stories of racing and dealing bultacos in the 70’s. Just bought an old ‘00 yz125 in need of a little love.
Haha nice!
I’m 6’1”. Raced hare scrambles, enduro, MX, observed trials, road racing. First race 1973. Last was an AHRMA off road in 2000. In my experience being somewhat tall is a big advantage UNTIL you crash. Then your legs and arms have so much leverage against their attachment points.
Not really, you will never know what it would feel like to be 5,6 on a 250 or 5’8 on a 250 it’s not all height
Interesting take on it
I mean, makes sense to me.
My observation is that tall guys tend to be better in the whoops and rough sections. Short guys better in turns
no one asked
It seems like moving from 2t to 4T bikes increased rider size.
In the top of my era of racing (1987-92) I was 6'2 160 with a 32in inseam. I really struggled to find a chassis that suited me. All of the bikes of that era felt really small. I rode a Suzuki for all of those years with a modified bar riser because that's the only machine I could get comfortable on and although Suzuki's turned great had good suspension, the clutches utterly sucked and lacked power unless you revved the nuts off them. I really wished I was under 6ft at that time so I could have ridden a Honda or Kawasaki.
Length is true for hard enduro. With exception for maybe climbing it seems like 6’2” to maybe 6’4” is advantage. Long legs for outriggers in rocks and being able to use length to leverage weighting the rear tire seems to help
6’4” 245lbs
the only time being tall in moto is an advantage is a mud race, the only time!
And yet, RC lapped everyone in a mud race.
Being 67kg/149lbs
179cm/5'10 on a 250 i hate mud
@@antonsamuelsson1317you aren’t tall.
@@martymerceri9520 never said so i implying the opposite
@@dgochezhe didn't say shorter riders couldn't beat the taller riders in a mud race
I'm a numbers guy as well. We need this kind of data in moto
Put a privateer on a factory bike and factory rider on a privateer bike.
You're referring to a privateer rider that is on the edge of getting a Factory ride... C class practice is full of privateers, you know, the guys that would get stomped by Futures riders. Children that are 15 and 16 years old. 🤦♂️👍
What you tryna say 💀
And the factory rider will still be faster.
The difference of speed on a bone stoke bike from factory to privateer would legit make you stop riding lol . . Factory boys have the backing because they are 1 in 10 million riders
and all you'll learn is why the factory rider got the factory ride. Jett on a bone stock bike would destroy every privateer out there.
best height is 5'4" ish to 5'10" ish. and around 165lbs or less for 5'10" 125lbs for 5'4"
Easier to handle a rough track when your taller but it’s easier to get good starts when your shorter mainly for weight
I’m 5’3” 130lbs on a 125
5'5" 170lbs. Cornering has always been difficult for me, dabbing on a difficult trail is a nightmare. I wish i could get the subframe mod that RC could get.
I’m 6’9” and I love it. Although sometimes I have to learn on my own and be self taught with certain techniques since there are not many super tall riders! 👍
You’re in the wrong sport, go dunk ya fuckin giant lol
I’m a 5’8 trail rider and wish so many times I was 5’10 when I was learning or riding in snotty muddy trails.
I know this is only one variable in the equation but I wonder if that's the difference when you see guys kill it in 250 and when they move up, they run mid pack. Just a thought
I wonder if PC has data on all their riders inseams etc
I would love to know the worst position an elite rider has finished without a crash or mechanical failure like if they were on the bike they won or crashed like it seemed JS7 did
Being 6’9” there’s many benefits to being taller. Much more leverage and ability to move around the bike, handling, and much more! 🔥
And many disadvantages. I'm not saying you can't be fast on a bike at 6'9, but it would be a hinderance at the pro level. The vast majority of top riders are under 6'.
I’m positive bright will have an affect to some level. Moreso, weight 100% has an effect. I was riding my 450 at 145lbs, it felt like an absolute rocket ship and when I got depressed and out the bike away for a while my weight jumped to nearly 200lbs. I could feel my dirtbike was dogged down on power from just 50lbs added.
I’d be curious to know the height/weight for each of the riders that rode Alum frame and Steel frame bikes.
I would think being taller and lankier could be a big and advantage if used correctly just cuz they have so much more leverage on the bike. Ya if u taller ur prob heavier but in the 450class the bikes are so fast i dont think it would matter much.
Defo a benifet being taller if doing enduro but don't think would make a difference in motocross etc
5’ 5” 120 here. On older, 70s-80s bikes were not much of a problem. 37” + seat height is a massive problem with my 26” inseam. At 71, for the most part, my racing is pretty much done, but I’ve seen it all and raced it all.
@gungadingo I'm not much taller than yourself grew up racing never had an issue with size but done some enduro messing about and trying to do anything from a standstill it was nightmare taking a run at something is OK tho
Hahaha so truth, but I also think that the two strokes frame back in the days were made to shorter people
I love my 23 TC125 with my 5’6 130 LBS Short Ass 🤣✊💨
@@eric6rock 😂
I’m a 6’0 165lb B rider from Louisiana with a long torso and a size 11.5 boot. Always get told I look like Jett while I’m riding
Oh and I’m on a new frame KTM 350
Damn bro did anyone ask
Lmao no shot I find you on CZcams
This is more of a biomechanics questions. Height absolutely matters and taller riders will struggle with modern bikes because they are not built for their frame. When you look at other sports, cycling for example, the bikes are fitted to the rider. This is an untouched area of moto, doing bike fits based on the riders unique physiology/anatomy.
Lowered pegs? Taller seats? Taller bars? All things to set a bike up for a taller guy
@@garretthanley5541 still doesn't change the fact that the frame is to big or small for a rider. i'm 6,3 and like a taller seat but will never run lower footpegs. you cant ride with them on rough dutch sand track.
Isn’t Haiden like 5’7 right now? He rips. I’m 5’7 155-160. Decent on track. Can struggle in off road races in certain off camber situations. Definitely my taller buddies have an advantage. But technique can level the field.
I'm 7'10 and love my 450 .
No your not, CAP
Proof
I don't think you can always say one body type is better than another, because the sport has a tremendous amount of give and take, in a way that most sports don't. NFL lineman need to be huge, period. Swimmers need a huge wingspan.
MX, too short or too tall isn't good. Everything in-between has advantages and disadvantages.
190cm and about 117kg i felt at home when i owned a 480rr riding enduro. Of course i wish i was 20kg lighter but cant afford lipo or clen
Motocross doesn't have enough data in general. It's not a sport that is studied very much. Need more sports scientists
Height vs injured??
Shit I’m seeing a lot of people in the comments being 5’6 - 5’3. I’m 5’6 myself, Weighing in also 130 too 😂
My Older Bros got lucky one is 6’2 and the other 5’9
I love motorsports there is no limit or requirement for height or Build, only Talent and Drive 🤝
6’5 and my 450 feel like a 225 size wise
5 10 to 6 ft and 160 imo is the sweet spot
Best riders of all time for the most part have been 5'5" to 5'10" 130-160 lbs. All of them.
Yes, there is a few outliers, none of them are goat status.
Carmichael, stewart, reed, tomac, villopto, dungey (tall side maybe, still reasonable weight.)
145 5 foot 6 kxf250
I'm 6'2" with only uh 32" inseam. I have an enormously wide and long upper body and I don't lean the same was as my friends because of it. I'll bring up the wind catching my shoulders and they'll say they just felt in rip their helmet... 🤷♂️🤘
So intriguing, shimoda looks like he’s 95 lbs soaking wet, his 250 should holeshot every time. Jet, as a skeleton, looks like the perfect match to a 450 frame/hp. But, heart -Webb can’t be matched.
What does it mean to have heart in mx/sx? dont all of them have heart?
5'6" 152
Not only height but weight especially on the 450s these days it ain’t the weight of the bikes it’s the traction and weighing the suspension down, bigger heavier dudes do way better these days in my opinion. Sweet sport is slightly bigger than average 5,11-6.3 and 13-15 stone I’d say.
Regarding start being closer now days. Clinton thinks it’s because riders are working harder on their starts.
I disagree. They’ve always recognized it. The reason starts are closer is because we’ve eliminated the human error factor by adding PEDs, Performance Enhancing Devices.
Starting grids are going to make starts more consistent. Same contact surface each race.
Holeshot maps and traction control are an unfair advantages for factory riders.
5’8 195lbs 14-16% bf ktm450sxf my favorite ktm250sxf for tighter track and a more pitbike feel.
Or Tall people require different techniques than short people do. I'd think that a BJJ guy would understand that. But tall people always just default to "must be better cuz tall" the best racers in the sport have been short so type in that data
173cm don’t have a clue in foot, inch.. I feel short on my 2023 - 125 KTM
5'6", 155lbs, 16% BF
"From Murrieta and Corona, California...."
Really?
5'11 165
Wouldn't the AMA have all the dates of birth? If you have your Pro license even back in the 70's I would think so.
Tony lorruso was shorter and Treadwell was bigger and Henry in between and they all went fast as shit. I don't think it matters
The less height you are , weight less
It hurt me to read this
5ft2" @ 210lbs
east west show down with a triple crown
5'10 140 lbs 👍
230lbs 5foot 8 inch
Can we say money ball?
Just bogel ain’t 5.2. If he is that’s crZy 😂😂😂
Webb is under leveraged over savaged
