TR&CI 110: Ashiok's Replacement Effect Makes It 'Impossible' To Play A Land/Spell, Or Does It?

- In this episode of Tough Rules & Cool Interactions, I will be talking about a suggested card from Pseudo148 who mentioned that I should take a look at the latest Ashiok PWer and his wild Replacement Effect. I picked two doozy situations that are likely to come up, but let me know if you all can think of any other crazy situations involving Ashiok.

Ok, this is epic 🙌🙌🙌
Oh yeah, very solid suggestion. This was such a crazy one.
Good question man!
I had no clue playing the land would be that specific of a rule.
Just gotta keep patching the game, create more rules to make sure the rules work.
@@ThisIsACommanderChannel Oh wow, the rules like that are pretty much like a patch for a game. Interesting perspective.
Neat interaction! I really appreciate how clearly you explained the rules in this situation. I'm subscribed for more!
Thanks, I'm glad that you've enjoyed the video so much. I hope you also like the backlog of older episodes. My earlier ones have some meh audio, but still solid info. I'll get around to revisiting their topics one day.
Been subscribed for a while, a co-worker who plays introduced me to this channel and I'm so glad they did. This channel has helped out so much.
@@digitalworldsvr7881 That's awesome! I'm glad people are out there working with fellow Commander players and sharing the channel to each other. Thanks for both of ya subscribing!
That retro frame land looks so good. I need all of them.
I know right! I'm going to go broke trying to get those.
Gotta love it when they have to make a weird little rule for their new weird little guy
Just keep patching the CR, make the game still work.
Excellent episode!! Learning a lot from this
Thanks, glad it helped out and that you enjoyed the episode. I love doing subscriber requested episodes, only don't a few so far but I've really enjoyed each of them. This one especially had me doing some deep diving into the CR for that subrule.
This was a great question
Yeah, I had to do some solid digging through the CR to find the answer for this one. I'm not a big PWer player, I run a few of them in my decks, but not a lot. So when spoiler season comes around for new sets, if I see a PWer I probably just glance over it and don't really read the card. I had no clue this Ashiok existed. I don't really need the Loyalty Abilities all that much in most decks, but that Replacement Effect is pretty dang good. Anyhow, yeah, really good question and I'm glad Pseudo148 asked it as it was interesting to do the research on it.
Dang, replacement effects that happen during casting a spell or playing a land, that's weird.
Ha! Yeah, Replacement Effects are already complex, and this just makes it so much more complex.
Those super specific rules they have to create, that is two episodes back to back for that.
Seems like it happens a lot these days.
Do you have a video about timing restrictions and abilities. For example Urza Lord High Artificiers ability does it allow you to play the exiled cards ignoring timing or casting restrictions such as casting a sorcery with urza on an opponents turn.. and Mosswort Bridge, why does this ability ignore timing restrictions?
That has been on my list for far too long and it comes up way too often, so sure, that will make make for a good first video of 2024.
Aww, no bonus question, but that is a very strange situation to run into. I use Bolas's Citadel in each of my black decks but I didn't even know about this Ashiok. Very interesting interaction.
I'll have some more bonus questions soon. Just crazy time with holidays and birthdays.
@@ThisIsACommanderChannel I'm just messing (but not really as I do really love the bonus questions but I am messing because yes this is a crazy time of the year and I'm just happy to have any videos from you each week so no pressure on including the bonuses).
@@kyleedmunds5329 Ha! That gave me a good chuckle, thanks!
Dumb question: Would Yasharn, Implacable Earth stop Ashiok, Wicked Manipulator and Bolas's Citadel?
Yup, it preemptively restricts the life from being paid and Ashiok's Replacement Effect will only replace something as it is happening.
Do you take submissions for these videos or do they come up naturally in your gameplay?
Both. Most of my videos come from the games I have and see at my LGSs, but during spoiler season I read through the cards and can get an idea of the screwy cards that will give people some problems. But I really like to get subscriber requested questions. When they're easier questions, I'll answer them in the comments, but when they're a question needing a deeper dive into the CR then I can get a whole video dedicated to those.
@@ThisIsACommanderChannel I thought it may be both as you said. Thanks for being awesome!
@@ThisIsACommanderChannel I did come across an interesting interaction having to do with Zada hedron grinder and casting arc lightning targeting Zada. Could each copy of arc lightning target each of up to 3 just as it does when cast normally assuming 1 target has to be a creature I control?
@@ggsolokid3725 So when you cast the Arc Lightning, you will have to make sure to only target Zada with it as the ability on Zada will only trigger if Zada is the only creature. When his ability does trigger and make a copy, the copies will all copy the same division of damage that you picked, which was to divide 3 damage amongst just 1 target. So for each of the copies, you don't get to make a new choice for how to divide the damage, the original Zada saw was 3 damage to 1 target, so each copy will also have to be 3 damage to 1 target.
@@ThisIsACommanderChannel Thank you I thought that maybe targeting rules would make the interaction work differently. I appreciate you taking the time to help me with this. It was a grey enough area for me that I couldn't figure it out myself. What were the rules you cited for the interaction and how'd you figure out which rules section to look at?
