This was such a wonderful movie!! Brando was on top of his game, a true classic actor. A deep story and a movie that must be seen, it was just that great! LOVED IT!
This is the most polite cursed ever. Don't need F words to show you're angry like nowdays film. On The Waterfront is a great movie anyway. Love Brando.
Exactly, how could there be one, those performances and cinematography cannot be replicated today, or ever. I think movies like this one, converging so much artistry and talent i.e.; Script, direction, cast, score, photography etc, etc, etc would be very difficult to try to emulate. Besides, they belong to an era and way to make movies long gone, and they are so ingrained in our cultural heritage that it is virtually impossible for any director, and the public in general to take on new renditions of it. Just saying.
I envy you, last time I saw it on the big screen was 18 years ago, at the GFT/Glasgow Film Theatre. Strongly recommended to see this movie in a movie theatre at least once.
2:22 Johnny Friendly (Lee J. Cobb) calls out the big guns for help here. The leading thug was played by boxer "Two Ton" Tony Galento; the thug with the hat blocking the crowd is Hermann Muenster (Fred Gwynne)

Even better, if I may list my top 10 Goats (we already concur in one, "On the Waterfront, this one is n°1 for me), let's see how much alike our taste are when it comes to movies. What I sense is that we are going to coincide in another two at the very least (maybe I'm wrong but I doubt it.) @@scottmiller6495 Yours is a terrific llist, too. Now how's that for a great second list? Plus many others I didn't mention!!!!!
I agree with you, the way the fight is portrayed is in my view the most naturalistic and visceral I've seen in a movie, with those big fellas viciously gang beating Terry Mallory all over, many times on the head, after Johnny Friendly calls for help. On the other hand, Terry Mallory movements and blows, specially the hooks he throws Friendly look like those of a pro fighter. As well as having outstanding acting skills, I bet Brando knew how to throw a punch himself. Just saying. Great ending for a great movie.
Dignity is not found in your social or economic status, but is going in carrying your own personal integrity even when faced with hardship and adversity. Terry Malloy is proof of that. He became a champion of the working class by standing up to corruption against longshoremen.
@ERoBB1 It must have been tough to choreograph the fight since Johnny Friendly is an old guy who can only fight dirty against Terry who was a promising light-heavy five years earlier. Also, the guy in the middle of the shot at 3:01 looks so much like President Johnson when he was still a senator. No doubt the music really helps a lot.
Don't underestimate aging. Lee J. Cobb/Johnny Friendly was tough as hell, Terry Mallory was also tough, but a class act as a fighter, too. Too much for Johnny Friendly to handle.
That and Casablanca. So many great scenes. My dad, from Bayonne, after Korea, worked as a longshoreman in Jersey City then. Found Polaroids after he died of him with a friend, who was black, in the park in which Brando picks up Eva Marie Saint’s glove after the Church had been raided. They probably shaped up that morning, got no work, and headed to Hoboken to hang out. Not common to see a white guy and a black guy hanging out like brothers in 1955. Laughing. Posing. Who took the pictures???? They could handle themselves.

Three of the best fights in cinema, final show off in "On the waterfront", soldiers' fistfight in "Barry Lyndon," and, the fistfight in the fields in "The big country."
Best scene in the movie and 1 of the 4 good movies Brando was in. The others were Street Car, The Bounty and A Dry White Season. The rest were mediocre and then Brando quit on the movies and himself. He ended up being a fat recluse who would do interviews and rip other actors from his era and later and fill his face with food and drugs. What a waste.

Marlon Brando and Lee J. Cobb together? This movie has some fucking god-tier acting
I love it that Brando never threw those typical Hollywood punches. Just short body shots that wore his opponent down.
Yes, and he throws them like a pro.
In most of his movies Brando used a stunt double for the fight scenes.

Certainly a contender (no pun intended) for greatest scene ever, and some of its strongest competition is in the same film.
